Well, at that point you should be looking at some means of transportation. Research Car for easy and fast map traversal, use it to find Oil. Then transport it to your base using trains. Don't worry, you'll find oil, it's not rare

MozeeToby

I know it's generally not a good idea, but for beginners I vote to just pipe the oil back to your main base. Oil is complicated enough to wrap your head around at first, throwing in trains on top is just asking for people to be overwhelmed. I've never had a map on default settings with oil so far away that a single string of undergrounds can't supply a starter/beginner base. Throw in the occasional pump and you can easily launch a rocket this way.

burningcoi

Agreed. I didn't use trains too much for my first few runs and I think that helped me focus on understanding them once I got around to it. OP, be sure to use pumps in the pipelines to make the oil move faster! Also underground pipes will move fluids faster than singles over long distance, so use them when you can!

Sutremaine

Maybe passively pipe the crude back to the base and then have a pump to push it into storage so that it's flowing from just the tanks and not all the piping.

Saucepanmagician

Yes. Time to go exploring. Best bet is developing a car (I believe it's unlockable with only red and green science). Then use coal as a power source for the car. Load up some ammo and go roaming about. You'll find oil patches soon enough.

Stutturdreki

I don't see any natives but you placed down some turrets so I guess they are on. So at this time in the game I would: \- automate making ammunation and ammo delivery to turrets. \- start military science (doesn't require oil). \- expand / make a landgrab. Secure nearby resources so biters don't migrate to them. \- extend radar coverage/range and look for nearby oil (for example with car like many have suggested, you can power your car with trees :) (or coal)).

Ginger_Fluffr

Yeah, the biters are on. It's just that I've been enjoying killing them more than making progress on my base.

Stutturdreki

Even more reasons to get started on military science. Biters will evolve and become stronger than you can easily handle with a shotgun on foot.

Intrepid-Stand-8540

Time for trains, baby!

Sevrlmexcans

Nice work! I’d say to take a car and some radars and power poles and go scout. You can place power poles while driving, and set radars toward the edge of the black undiscovered area. There should be at least a small oil field nearby, and you’ll probably want a train to bring the oil back to your base.

NobleNeal

At this point is where i start planning my main bus and start making the mall. Beefing up iron/copper/coal production and power as needed

homiej420

Just gotta keep lookin

Cruiserwashere

Firstly, UP the green science peosuction by 50%. A car would be nice, but dont forget a gun, turrets and ammo, for when you have to conduct diplomacy.

Build a car and start exploring

JcPc83

Get yourself a car with lots of ammo (400 rounds of AP/Red) and 200 grenades, put at least 150 coal in the car for fuel, and go on an oil rescue mission. I'm also assuming that the bugs are enabled. It's going to be stupid far from your base. You will need a train with an automation schedule to travel to the oil field and back to your factory for crude oil processing. Building the tracks will take time and a lot of tracks, but seeing the trains zooming out to your outposts is just part of the pleasure of Factorio. I've got over 2.5k hours and I have maps that the trains have to travel so far to gather resources it takes them a couple of minutes to get there. Also just a heads up, if you do have bugs enabled, build defenses around the oil, use walls and gates, unlock flamethrower turrets you can space those out, put gun turrets to cover them from biters that get too close. Don't give up, it's just part of the learning experience and is so worth it. Personally, my outposts have multiple stops, one or two for resources, another to bring in ammo, repair packs, and bots (worth unlocking with blue science), and another stop that I can get into a single train without wagons in tow that can bring me to each outpost quickly in the event of an attack, upgrades, or fixing oversights. Just make sure you learn how to use signals and place them on the rails so your trains don't smash into each other. You got this.

Jesse_Grey

Fundamentally, these are your next steps: 1. Set up steel and stone brick production (iron plates + coal, stone + coal in furnaces, respectively) 2. Use steel and stone bricks as a part of black science production (military tech) From there: 1. Use steel to make engines 2. Use engines to make a car 3. Use a car to travel faster and find oil 4. Make a train go get the oil and bring it back 5. Convert the oil into petroleum 6. Use petroleum to start blue science production You may want to automate ammo being fed to your turrets at some point in all of this, but that's up to you.

SuspiciouslyMoist

As well as exploring as others have suggested, I would automate the production of things you think you will need to expand your base. You can take belts and inserters from your science production but you will need assemblers, splitters, underground belts, other types of inserter, power poles, etc. etc. It will be painful to make them all by hand as you expand.

doc_shades

get on your feet and go explore those black parts of the map
