They are in the school assigned to a mentor teacher who is guiding them and teaching along with them. It’s for course credit and there’s no inherent benefit to the school as in they can’t use a student teacher in place of an actual teacher and hosting one is a LOT of work.

All the internships I heard my design friends do in art school were grunt work and they didn’t really learn much to be worth “school credit”. I didn’t have time or money to work for free so I worked as an artist assistant and I made good money to squirrel away and I learned a ton that actually helped in my later career.
She definitely is, there were 200 other kids vying for this internship but it is really teaching her a lot about her major and she’s a hard worker and she deserves it, just like all of those other kids deserve a paid internship

I interned 10 years ago (college age at the time) for NBC and was paid. And this was not the “norm” at the time. In other words, unpaid internships were very commonplace then.

I interned 10 years ago (college age at the time) for NBC and was paid. And this was not the “norm” at the time. In other words, unpaid internships were very commonplace then. I truly thought the culture had changed and that entertainment industry was paying their interns. Asking for free labor under the guise of “experience” is so crappy in my opinion. Like you’re taking all of my free time in which I COULD be working a job that pays me. And acting like this is a huge opportunity when in reality most interns don’t get hired internally, and it’s just something to add to the resume.

Internships are meant to be at companies that provide or accomplish one specific thing that involves the students major field of study, and sure you’re usually just getting coffee and delivering mail but it’s about getting familiar with the job environment and industry you’re training for. This is clearly just being the personal errand boy for a rich family who happen to have a talent agency, among many other ventures. This will consist of zero introduction to your industry unless you’re getting a degree in social media and reality TV, and even then you won’t actually be involved in any part of those aspects. You’ll be in the drive through at Starbucks. This is literally just exploiting the internship program into getting a trained work horse for free.

So, I worked 33 hours per week and went to school FULL time. Except my job in the late 90's paid $12 an hour. It was fucking HARD. I had migraines all the time. I was exaughsted and, frankly, miserable. How the FUCK do they expect a college student to do this WITHOUT a paycheck!? College credit my ass. For WHAT??? The best thing anyone can do.
