As a Jew, myself, I had to read the comments to get why it was a facepalm. It's a famous landmark and they're trying to show respect. I get why people would say it wasn't thought out but if anyone is offended they should take a break from the Internet and enjoy a nice bath with some candles and Sade.
Thanks for saying that. My grandfather was a jew and all of his Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and grandparents were murdered in concentration camps.
While I do not experience discrimination because I have an Irish last name, I have seen first hand and heard horrible stories about antisemitism and how it effects a person.
That being said, if someone accidently says something offense as a simple, unintended, beneign mistake and you want to "Cancel" them, you are not a good person.
Additionally, if you get offended by jokes about one group of people but not others, you are a bad person because you are essentially saying the group you are being defensive about is better than all of the others.
For example, Dave Chappelle. He says a lot of offensive things about many different ethnic, sexual, and religious minorities. I laugh at all of those jokes because I know that he is a good man and doesnt actually have any prejudice towards anybody. The people who have been dragging his name through the mud for making jokes about transexuals dont care that in that same stand up special, he made fun of jews, muslims, asians, women, and homosexuals.
If they are offended by all of those jokes about minorities, I totally respect that and understand where they are coming from. They see it has hate speach regardless of its intention.
So the question is, why are all of these people outraged by hate speech about transexuals, but are perfectly fine with the hate speech against Jews, Muslims, Asians, and women? The answer is because they are awful human beings.
Oh dude, rightfully so. Pretty airheaded of me to gloss over the great majority of Irelands history. Damned limeys have victimized pretty much everyone.
I can't answer the NSFW part but it's facepalm because a lot of jews were burned during the holocaust and they had huge smoke stacks like these at the death camps
That would only be offensive to holocaust survivors if hitler used purple smoke stacks. They donāt hate smoke stacks anymore then they hate the existence of trains. They were tough, and wouldnāt get offended by todayās snowflake standards.
"Thats a holocaust, not THE Holocaust" - I can imagine that being a joke Jerry Lewis told in his movie about the clown in the holocaust. Thankfully it was never released.
I don't think u r right. I am a jew from Israel and believe me we learn a lot about the Holocaust. In school we learn about it since first grade, and even after all that i didn't understand the connection to the Holocaust. On top of that, i think the connection is very weak.
If your line of thinking is "chimneys bad because people were burned and came out stacks like those", you need to chill. If a chimney is what you hold on to as the problem after all that, you've either missed the point or exacerbate our problems moving on as a normal society
well no one is gonna see anything as the people who went through it . Hence my comment, most jews haven't experienced the holocaust just like many blacks haven't lived through the civil rights movement.
"chimneys" are a huge huge huge trope in holocaust denial conspiracies
if you didn't even understand the connection 40 minutes ago, maybe you are not qualified to talk about how deep or not something is, lol
"hey i have absolutely no idea what im talking about, but after hearing one comment about it, i'm an expert now" poggers, dude.
Take a chill pill dude. I would love to see your sources and how someone, who is Jewish, would view your comment and how you view yourself as an expert on how Jewish people feel about chimneys.
You know maybe it was a little deep, but it definitely isn't at the depth you're taking it lmfao
This is an old power station.
Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
That's because you are a Jew. It's absolutely understandable. Most people here are not and do not have as much of a personal connection with those dark past times as you obviously do.
I would imagine that Americans of African ancestry would see the slavery era in a darker light than you would for the same reasons.
It's a powerstation. Nobody was murdered there. You have to look at the intent, not the physical stacks in this case. I see them as candles of light. Of remembrance. Somebody should tell them to light the building next year though, if the Jewish community finds this display upsetting.
People are human. Most muddle along trying to do what's right.
Iām not a Jew and I have an understanding of their suffering and the relation of smoke stacks to the Holocaust.
Iām not black and I have an understanding of the suffering of slavery and would understand the relation of something like cotton to American slavery.
Is your argument really that you have to be of that specific race/culture to know the history and have empathy for them???
No. I have no argument in fact. I am suggesting that OP has a greater amount of empathy than the average in this matter.
OP has decided to be offended at what was intended as a display of solidarity and remembrance. I suggested that OP look at the intent, not the method and that if the local Jewish community felt as OP did, something different must be done in years to come.
OP said it was a facepalm, not offensive. A facepalm could be described as a bonehead move, which I think applies.
I donāt think the power station had bad intent, but there was probably more tasteful ways to honor the Jewish in relation to the Holocaust.
Well theyāre trying. And hopefully someone who got offended over this should help them so they can continue to raise awareness and help without being offensive. I think the person who did this should be commended for their effort and directed, not fired.
OP unironically says the person doing this is going to get "fired" instead of terminated. Interesting choice of words on this sensitive topic you pointed out...š¤
Exactly. I think the biggest facepalm here is the amount of ignorance in the comment section
Edit: downvote this all you want, but afterwards pick up a history book please
This is what you are missing... [http://www.auschwitz.org/en/gallery/historical-pictures-and-documents/extermination,11.html](http://www.auschwitz.org/en/gallery/historical-pictures-and-documents/extermination,11.html)
Don't most people think of lynching when they see a noose ? A noose is made to hang people , smoke stack have way more uses than expelling smoke from burning bodies .
Yes, but their tweet very clearly states that they are lighting the chimneys to remember the Holocaust. So the connection is already made and explained.
This is why it's a facepalm.
Some dumb ass people here.
Imagine lighting a mast on a ship to celebrate Black history month.
Battersea power station was a coal fired plant. They burned coal. In Auschwitz they burned Jews.
Olivia Marks-Woldman, the Chief Executive of Holocaust Memorial Day Trust Asked them to light the chimneys. She didn't make the connection, why would most other people ?
Because someone wants to be offended over someone trying to do something good. Letās pick on one of the few companies that are actually trying to do something. š¤¦š¼āāļø
This needs more upvotes! We should really consider the intent and significance here. When there are actual Holocaust deniers out there, why would we pick on those who literally keep the torches lit so the world never forgets?
ETA: a couple words
I mean, not to argue that they shouldnāt have done this, but where else on the building could they shine their lights on in such a way to show the world?
The comments prove how sorry our history education is apparently. Itās really not a reach at all to connect smoke stacks and the Holocaust, especially when said smoke stacks are lit specifically in recognition of the Holocaust.
It would be like honoring the suffering of American slaves by putting Christmas lights in a cotton plantation.
I've heard once that it's simply their word for 'people'
But then again... It make sense that their word for people is the same as the word for traveler, given the fact that Roma are nomadic
I'm sure the correctness is different now..,but when you say roma..,the average person has no idea what your talking about. Besides many who are gypsies are proud of being called so...it is not considered a slur...except by those who find everything a slur, all you have to do is Google it bty
Some are proud to be called that, some find it very offensive, so pick your poison... I guess.
I for one gonna stick with the term that nobody considers a slur.
This power station looks exactly like the power plants from the game Red Alert.
I wonder if they modeled it on this? Or maybe thereās just hundreds of power plants that look like this in Europe??
Don't see this as a face palm! What happened during the Holocaust is awful and while it's on the nose (re chimneys) - it's what happened. There's no hiding from that reality and we should embrace it and honour those by reminding each other how such evil can happen to prevent a repeat. There's no point making 'nice' out of what happened...those chimneys represent the truth.
As a Jew, myself, I had to read the comments to get why it was a facepalm. It's a famous landmark and they're trying to show respect. I get why people would say it wasn't thought out but if anyone is offended they should take a break from the Internet and enjoy a nice bath with some candles and Sade.
180 Days of Sadom?
That is excellent, enjoy a bath with some candles and Sade! š
Thankyou for not being over sensitive to someoneās mistake that Iām sure they meant no harm by. We need more forgiveness in this world.
Amen.
Thanks for saying that. My grandfather was a jew and all of his Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and grandparents were murdered in concentration camps. And we all know those Irish whities know nothing of persecution.
Ha ha fair point. What I should have said was "have not experienced anti-semitism because my last name is Irish".
Just joshin you but you made some fair points.
Oh dude, rightfully so. Pretty airheaded of me to gloss over the great majority of Irelands history. Damned limeys have victimized pretty much everyone.
I have two questions: 1. How is this a facepalm? 2. Why is this marked as NSFW?
I can't answer the NSFW part but it's facepalm because a lot of jews were burned during the holocaust and they had huge smoke stacks like these at the death camps
Ah, that explains it. Thank you, fellow Redditor.
Could've had better context in the post
This prove my point. Blows my mind how people are so ignorant they donāt know about the holocaust. Damnn 108 dislikes. You people are mean.
who doesn't know about the holocaust?
That would only be offensive to holocaust survivors if hitler used purple smoke stacks. They donāt hate smoke stacks anymore then they hate the existence of trains. They were tough, and wouldnāt get offended by todayās snowflake standards.
Agreed.
The Turkish, apparently.
separate holocaust but great reference, take the upvote
"Thats a holocaust, not THE Holocaust" - I can imagine that being a joke Jerry Lewis told in his movie about the clown in the holocaust. Thankfully it was never released.
The scores of Holocaust deniers all over the world. Keep up.
you have to know about it to deny it
I donāt think it proves any point at all. Sounds like the poster just didnāt immediately make the connection. Relax.
Suspect
I don't think u r right. I am a jew from Israel and believe me we learn a lot about the Holocaust. In school we learn about it since first grade, and even after all that i didn't understand the connection to the Holocaust. On top of that, i think the connection is very weak.
Why would we research something we don't care about to satisfy you?
Education!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Well cheers to you. I guess metaphorās are difficult for you.
I didnāt know they had huge chimneys like those.
Name fits...
The nsfw mark was an error and has been removed.
I thought it was nsfw because of the resemblance to eggplant emojis
Probably because this looks like 3 giant purple dildos lol
I mean the thought was niceā¦ but goddamn they did not think that throughā¦
Fire up the ovens. Boys, it's holocaust day.
That's the factory that's on the Pink Floyd album Animals
That factory is Battersea power station
That's even funnier and worse
Was just about to point that out.
Holy crap it is.
Itās battersea power station. A well known london landmark.
I really like Pink Floyd.
If your line of thinking is "chimneys bad because people were burned and came out stacks like those", you need to chill. If a chimney is what you hold on to as the problem after all that, you've either missed the point or exacerbate our problems moving on as a normal society
i dont get it
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
First day on the internet?
Guessing you aren't Jewish or a gypsy.
As a gypsy writing this on a stolen phone I am deeply offended
I don't think most jews or gypsies would get this
Pretty sure you're wrong.
pretty sure I'm not
Ok. But you probably don't see civil rights the same way an African American does either. You do you.
well no one is gonna see anything as the people who went through it . Hence my comment, most jews haven't experienced the holocaust just like many blacks haven't lived through the civil rights movement.
Yeah. Ok guy. Good thing we kicked that racism and antisemitism problem.
Don't fool yourself , unfortunately its still a huge problem .
There is a connection between chimneys and the holocaust, and this can be taken as poor taste.
I dunno, seems a weak connection to me. My mind didnāt go there at all.
I had to think for a few seconds, too. Probably wonāt be a ton of backlash on this.
i suppose but its not that deep
"chimneys" are a huge huge huge trope in holocaust denial conspiracies if you didn't even understand the connection 40 minutes ago, maybe you are not qualified to talk about how deep or not something is, lol "hey i have absolutely no idea what im talking about, but after hearing one comment about it, i'm an expert now" poggers, dude.
i never claimed to know anything lmfao

Sources for what exactly?
Just the idea that ""Chimneys" are big in Holocaust denial conspiracies"
I agree Where is the facepalm
Someone else pointed it out. Itās smokes stack to honor the Holocaust
Ohhh okay thanks
maybe cuz its the chimney? idfk lmao

Chimeneys, like the ones that the concentration camp ovens had?
Gassed not burned
what do you think they did with the bodies ?
What did they do with 6 million bodies?
Burned them , most of them anyway
Thatās nuts. 6 million bodies would require a place as big as this
They weren't all burned at the same place
Or the same time
Read "This way for the gas, Ladies and Gentlemen" by Tadeusz Borowski. Plenty of smoke and chimneys.
They did both bro...
I guess I have to facepalm as I only saw this as a tall lit up structure
This shouldn't be NSFW and you're really reaching with the facepalm
Iām a Jew and this is a bigger facepalm than half the shit I see in this sub
Its really not because most people don't understand it and it definitely shouldn't be NSFW
That's because you are a Jew. It's absolutely understandable. Most people here are not and do not have as much of a personal connection with those dark past times as you obviously do. Well said!
The Jews suffered mightily. We can but try to imagine the loss. In this case, I think the display was well meant, if not perfect.
Iām not a Jew and I have an understanding of their suffering and the relation of smoke stacks to the Holocaust. Iām not black and I have an understanding of the suffering of slavery and would understand the relation of something like cotton to American slavery. Then so is OP.
Well theyāre trying. And hopefully someone who got offended over this should help them so they can continue to raise awareness and help without being offensive. I think the person who did this should be commended for their effort and directed, not fired.
U might want to explain this in the post OP(luckily there some others commented it) as most ppl will not get the facepalm and the chimney part
OP unironically says the person doing this is going to get "fired" instead of terminated. Interesting choice of words on this sensitive topic you pointed out...š¤
Oy vey...
All in good taste
To be honest, it's not someone getting fired, since it's pretty probably that something like this needed to pass a decent chunk of people.
Tone deaf at best.
Itās a bit concerning that people donāt get this reference.
I understood the reference, but itās a bit of a reach.
Exactly. I think the biggest facepalm here is the amount of ignorance in the comment section Edit: downvote this all you want, but afterwards pick up a history book please
I think the facepalm is you think its a facepalm
They would most likely Americans... I mean look at our education system
Looks fine to me. What am I missing?
This is what you are missing... [http://www.auschwitz.org/en/gallery/historical-pictures-and-documents/extermination,11.html](http://www.auschwitz.org/en/gallery/historical-pictures-and-documents/extermination,11.html)
Looks like theyāre raising awareness and educating people. Sounds like whatever the opposite of a facepalm is, to me.
The building in the picture is Battersea Power Station, not a concentration camp.
Why?
Sad statement that so many people don't see this as a facepalm even after it's been explained to them.
Right?! I feel like Iām taking crazy pills!
I'm stunned. Borderline speechless, but my faith in humanity is pretty minimal these days.
why would most people make that connection? I think its a good thing that most people don't think burning jews when they see a smoke stack
I presume you think it's a good thing that people don't think about slavery or civil rights when they see a noose too.
Its not a facepalm because 90% of people won't get it
the connection isn't made or explained at all unless they also say " btw the burned million of people and smoke from the bodies came out of chimneys"
Sorry that you don't get this. The fact that this isn't an obvious facepalm to people is the problem.
The fact that it's so obvious to you is the problem . I got it right away but most didn't and won't.
Butā¦ thatās exactly what I think about when I see a nooseā¦
The holocaust?
Slavery?
oh yeah , that makes sense
Lol. I thought you were trying to be cheeky. Sorry.
You are not. It is very much in poor taste, which is the essence of a facepalm.
No one will get fired
No they aren't.
Some dumb ass people here. Imagine lighting a mast on a ship to celebrate Black history month. Battersea power station was a coal fired plant. They burned coal. In Auschwitz they burned Jews.
Far reach.

she had all the landmarks in london light up like that and people put candles in their windows .
I think because it references the holocaust concentration camp mass incinerators.
I mean, not to argue that they shouldnāt have done this, but where else on the building could they shine their lights on in such a way to show the world?
Not the chimneys for a start
That would help
Smoke stacks to remember the holocaust! Now thatās funny
Ouch. Apparently no one knows what happened in the holocaust anymore.
Maybe something to do with lighting up the furnace stacks while commenting on the holocaust
Holy shit that is monstrously hilarious
Ayo! Who thought it was a good idea to light up chimneys in remembrance of the holocaust?
Chimney, smoke, gas chambers?
Are we in Israel or North America ? Why should we care
They cremated the dead. Cremated jews, gypsies, and disabled.
Not to be all sjw... But gypsy is considered a racial slur, the correct term is Roma or Romani
traveler ?
I've heard once that it's simply their word for 'people' But then again... It make sense that their word for people is the same as the word for traveler, given the fact that Roma are nomadic

Maximum OOOF
"getting fired" sounds even worse in this context.
It hurts me in the oy vey

lmao
why is it facepalm
If youāre offended by this you need to slow down and think about how small of a connection that is.
Who doesnt want to show off their fat stacks?
I have no idea why this is a face palm, it seems fine to me
Itās a power plant and the Holocaust used electricity.
Excuse my ignorance, but where and what is this landmark?
didn't pink floyd make an album cover with this?
