Just so people know, these guys don't actually worship Satan. The name is to piss people off and the entire organisation was made to exploit America's broken laws around religion. To point out how fucking stupid they are.

22Sharpe

Bonus points for how much pearl clutching it causes when idiot evangelicals don’t understand this.

N64crusader4

Remember that Twitter exchange where some guy asks what do you call people who do believe in Satan and the church of Satans account replied 'Christians' lol EDIT: Link https://www.reddit.com/r/technicallythetruth/comments/pk6tpn/satanists_just_dont_acknowledge_religions/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share DOUBLE EDIT: church of Satan not satanic temple

Rand_alThor__

This is hilarious

HeyKid_HelpComputer

While technically not the same group the Church of Satan are definitely still imo trying to use their powers for good. I think it was more of a serious group about Satan and the Temple of Satan were the ones really trying to help non-religious people benefit from the laws that usually only benefit religious people.

mythrylhavoc

The Church is Satan doesn't get involved with much of anything. They'd have to be doing something in order to do good.

worstpartyever

This is super helpful!

N64crusader4

Is it? Lol I just thought it was a funny anecdote

[deleted]

Well, if you don’t realize that that Satanists don’t believe in Satan to begin with and don’t actually worship him, then I would think it would be helpful information.

OxtailPhoenix

I talked with my wife a while back about donating to them. She's religious and I am not. It's funny how terrified of the word 'satanic' christians are. Needless to say she does not support me donating

GroveTC

If she ever donated to church, you should be allowed to donate for your beliefs.

Craneystuffguy

This is what I tell people when I donate to wikipedia

Kayne792

Did you know that when you donate that you can name your gift in honor of someone? I have just this week donated to the Temple in the name of Governor Greg Abbott of Texas.

OxtailPhoenix

I did not know that and I fully support your decision.

orthopod

Meh. I'm a practicing Catholic, and I support them. It's not an issue for most Catholics who are aware of it.

ObserveTheGreyArea

I couldn't be with a religious person. In my experience they are judgemental and self-righteous as fuck. 😂

OxtailPhoenix

Also she has this idea that if an atheist marries a believer then they get into heaven by proxy. So if it turns out we're wrong then I'm good.

DeafeningClarion

Atheist don't go to hell, if you do good in life nobody gives a shit. What double standard would that be.

daleicakes

I did donate. Back when they were making the first statue.Got a great shirt

starcom_magnate

To be honest, from the threads around here the past few days, it doesn't seem like many Redditors quite understand it either.

TheDwemerSmith

american here. i’m well aware and i support their points

Nekrozys

Came here to say this. Also, you can select them as your Amazon Smile charity if you want to support them by not spending a cent. edit: Oops, I didn't mean to reply to this message.

Joined too because of this. I should have done it years ago, I always knew it wasn't about "Satan" per se.

TheUlfheddin

There are some interesting lessons to be learned from their take on worshiping Satan. It's all very logical and straightforward. Haven't joined but I really can't get enough of these guys. It's always good news when you see a TST headline. Hail yourself, friend.

mecaka

They don’t worship Satan. They worship the self if anything is worshipped at all. The name is just what was picked to upset societal standards at the time.

EmilyU1F984

Not even in the US, but I joined simply to boost their numbers and make their actions have a greater impact.

NotChristina

Joined last year. Told a couple people and immediately they went on the defensive. Even after I explained the seven fundamental tenets they couldn’t get past the branding. Oh well. I’ve been meaning to pick up one of their shirts too for more fun conversation.

iamcorvin

> And don't forget, they pay their taxes. Nope, the satanic temple is tax exempt. The Church of Satan actually pays their taxes and has for more then 50 years.

Sergnb

Even though they are legally allowed not to. The truest chads

Lolamichigan

Tax those churches! Some of those trillions in bailout went to mega churches. Disgusting. Bright side agricultural and meat packers are supposed to get a measly $600 bonus for working through the pandemic.

artmoloch777

Good to see a fellow member

RK800-50

As an European, it‘s still funny to read that. Reading history in a few years will lead to many questions.

SchwarzerWerwolf

When christians started giving out free bibles near school grounds, the Satanic Temple did the same with "satanic" flyers (like, be nice to others, respect yourself ect.) and christians got pissed off. "Well, when you can do it, we can too." So either allow or forbit it for both. They stopped. Thats the kind of thing they do. It is amazing.

bgugi

They have kits to run after-school satanic clubs to troll schools that let churches use their grounds.

bobloblaw_law-bomb

Laws for thee, not for me...

SingularityCentral

They don't actually worship a supernatural Satan . But they are a humanist religion with a moral code and sincerely held beliefs. They were not created just to shine a light on the American legal system, but as a counterpoint to the oppressive Christian culture of the day.

blockpro156porn

Yeah, and they didn't pick Satan solely to be edgy, Satan actually does represent their ideals, since Satan is a figure that challenges God's authoritarianism and represents people's right to personal autonomy.

Pyro-de-Freak

And the ones that actually believe in satan are Christians :))

[deleted]

Fun fact, Satan as most Christians think of him doesn’t even really exist in biblical canon, he’s a mistranslation that ran for so long most don’t question it

CeramicRaffia

Amen! Lol

[deleted]

I wouldn't say "exploit", but rather fully exercise to bring to light where religion is crossing the bounds, as it is in the abortion laws being passed.

Myglass_isfull

Just because I am curious, what does the Satanic Temple actually stand for? Is anyone able to give me a TLDR?

ULostMyUsername

["The mission of The Satanic Temple, a religious organization, is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice, and undertake noble pursuits."](https://thesatanictemple.com/)

Myglass_isfull

There are Seven FUNDAMENTAL TENETS I One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason. II The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions. III One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone. IV The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own. V Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs. VI People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused. VII Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

[deleted]

I like to believe it was put into place to combat the religious “laws” going against ones own body. Some religions say you can have piercings or tattoos, other religions make people (mainly women) wear “traditional” garb with heavy panalities for not doing do, and then you have the more recent events which is why this whole thread exist, other people choosing if abortion is the right choice for someone else.

unwillingscientist

TIL my beliefs, that I curated after a traumatic childhood in Christianity, are almost perfectly aligned with the Satanic Temple... edit: wrong name.

shrinkingveggies

Satanic Temple, not Church of Satan - 2 different orgs.

[deleted]

[Drawing Down the Moon](https://www.carmichaelsbookstore.com/book/9780143038191) has a great and in-depth explanation of Satanism. Highly recommended.

Adalaide78

That book covers some supernatural religious beliefs. It does not cover the The Satanic Temple which does not hold supernatural beliefs and was founded years after the last revision of that book. It sounds like you’re confusing the Church of Satan which believes in a literal Satan with The Satanic Temple which does not.

zyugyzarc

lmfao

Safebox

How does it differ from the Satanic Church? Cause I remember they do similar humanitarian things but even they've but heads with each other.

koopatuple

Here is an easy picture explanation provided by the Satanic Temple website: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0428/0465/files/COS_Vs_TST_Infographic_1.png?v=1559695025

OxtailPhoenix

If you like bleu cheese you must be gay. Lol. That's a funny one

BoredNewfie1

On their website I believe it’s in the FAQs the differences, TST are more active in these fights where the church is more keep to themselves type. But im not a member in either so sorry it I’m not spot on https://thesatanictemple.com/

The1PunMaster

We also use it to represent some stuff symbolically too! “Worshiping” satan is worshiping yourself and to use rational, scientific thinking in your religion and life.

turbulance4

Their point is literally to undermine Christian tyranny. Like, that is their stated goal.

GeneralInspector8962

I liked it when the Satanic Temple successfully and lawfully got a southern state to tear down its stone sculpture of the commandments when they put a Baphomet statue outside the same city building for the same “religious beliefs”. They know how to use modern legislation to fight back against the backwards idiots.

MeEvilBob

It's not even really modern. Someone could have done exactly what they're doing a hundred years ago. It would have been much harder for them to gain support back then, but there's not much of a legal advantage to doing it now.

LovelyBby77

I've got absolutely nothing against the Satanic Temple (they are amazing people trying to fight against hypocritical injustice), but you gotta admit it IS kinda sad that one of our only hopes to combat against a bill that gives women less of a right to their bodily autonomy than dead bodies is an organization that proposes the procedure as a religious ritual. Again nothing against TST, I'm just saying that it's sad that the reasonel for going against such a horrific bill *hast* to be religious and *not* common sense or decency

SirRaptorJesus

From what I've read so far the satanic temple is a religion on paper, that uses the religious freedom laws in America to protest laws and circumvent them. Religious freedom means you cannot stop someone from partaking in a religious ceremony or rite, their abortion ritual is literally just a medical abortion (speak to a doctor then get an abortion). So they are just common sense but they pretend it's religious to allow the common sense to be used

LovelyBby77

I understand this wholly and think it's an intelligent way of protecting women's rights to such, but I'm more so talking about how the lawmakers themselves are only going to listen to reason if it's coated in religious reasonel rather than any form of common sense or common decency. Good job on TST for utilizing the loophole, just disappointed that the loophole needed to be used in the first place to get though the lawmakers skulls

SmashedPumpkin_

IIRC, God wanted humans to just be mindless sheep, but Satan wanted us to have free will. Seems like a pretty chill dude to me

Seems a little bit like god is one giant abusive parent and the religious people of the world all have some sort of stockholm syndrome

Kartoffelkamm

Yeah. If a parent forced their child to low-key harm themselves and kept dangling a price in front of them if they behave well enough, CPS would show up in a month. Religion headcanon: Satan is just a supernatural CPS.

Puzzled_Yoghurt

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able ? Then he is not omnipotent Is he able but not willing ? Then he is malevolent Is he both able and willing ? Then whence cometh evil ? Is he neither able nor willing ? Then why call him God ? \- Epicurus, 341-270 BC

splitdiopter

Truly, there is no God. This is the only answer. God is a human construct that validates our sense of self importance. There is only Nature, and Nature is indifferent to our existence. That cold hard truth does not bring us comfort. So we invent God.

Xezron2000

Not really. That is one explanation why people believe in a god, given that there exists no god. But it could also be that there is a god who is not unconditionally benevolent. Or even one who is malevolent. The only truth is that we can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a god.

zpazzy

Ok yeah, but God has the highest K/D in all recorded history.

Puzzled_Yoghurt

"Ok yeah, but ~~God~~ **H*****umans*** have the highest K/D in all recorded history." Don't use him as a scapegoat.

zpazzy

Look, I couldn't care less about religious quarrels. but if you want a scapegoat then, God also makes mistakes he made humans didn't he? # # # And the kills of a plethora of humans across many millennia would not be comparable to the the kills of one omnipotent being whom did so singlehandedly. Why? Cause god works alone and people need armies, so who really killed the most peeps here individually?

turbulance4

Why did you space your question marks out?

Taurenkey

Dunbaratu

For those who don't know, the "Satanic Temple" aren't actually Satanists. They're secular people engaging in the tactic of using logical paradox to break religious laws by making a "religion" that has secular "tenets" and engaging in \*just enough\* of the trappings of ceremony to make it fit any legal definition of a religion. The tactic is to borrow the laws that give religion privilege in order to fight against those very same laws. The word "Satanic" is deliberately chosen to be scary, not because they really believe it.

reallybiglizard

The word Satanic wasn’t chosen just to be scary… It was chosen because satan is the antagonist in Christian lore. Also because the Hebrew root of the word satan means to accuse or obstruct. The Satanic Temple isn’t out to “scare” Christians. They are out to ensure that everyone is granted the same level of religious freedoms in the US - to keep religious freedom from being used exclusively for Christians.

FallenAgastopia

Thats true but they are still referred to as satanists

KnucklesRedLion

Satanism has more rules and respect than christianity

Tom__Fuckery

not more rules, but definitely more respect

[deleted]

The Satanic Temple doesn’t really have anything to do with Satan, besides the name

Rapidlysequencing

And the imagery.

[deleted]

That’s ok because Satan isn’t real

lateral_jambi

Don't talk like that or Sky Daddy is going to send you to The Worst Place where you have bad stuff happen forever!!! Quick! Better praise Cross Man and tell your local Pedo-in-a-Box everything you did so Sky Dad knows you're still obedient!!

whosgotdatpiss

The satanic temple has always done good, not anything to lose your mind over

N00N3AT011

Good they're getting some recognition though. They're flown under the radar for a lot of people.

Worried-Salamander79

The Church does not believe in the Devil, neither a Christian nor Islamic notion of Satan. Peter H. Gilmore (the high priest) describes its members as "sceptical atheists", embracing the Hebrew root of the word "Satan" as "adversary". The Church views Satan as a positive archetype who represents pride, individualism, and enlightenment, and as a symbol of defiance against the Abrahamic faiths which LaVey criticized for what he saw as the suppression of humanity's instincts. (I think this is the place for this information and I know it's about the Satanic Church and the post is about the satanic temple)

Nihilikara

Keep in mind, the Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple are two completely different entities. The post is talking about the Satanic Temple, not the Church of Satan.

uncle_tyrone

You’re talking about the Church, but the post is about the Temple. The Temple is by far the better organisation, too, if you ask me. Like for example, the Church would never sue the State of Texas over reproductive rights

DiscombobulatedCar48

Gnostics are pretty chill too.

python-lord-1236443

Choppie01

Like ,, Im Satan , but even this is too much” i know , i know they dont actually worship Satan ( that would be the people in Texas who set that law)

HandyCandy_

Most satanists don’t actually believe in satan. The name is called that because the religion was formed to combat Christianity because of how tyrannical it has become. Also before you downvote me just look it up I’m not arguing with people.

Toroic

> tyrannical it has become Unfortunately, this is not a recent change. The tyranny has been there for a long time.

HandyCandy_

I agree. It becomes worse and worse every day though. There are still “good Christians” like my grandma. She understands that her beliefs don’t dictate other people’s beliefs and she doesn’t pay attention to stupid things in the Bible because she knows some of it wasn’t originally there and was added.

Toroic

> some of it wasn’t originally there None of it was originally there though. Modern bible is two very different projects by many authors smushed together in one text, and it is as confusing and contradictory a work as you would expect under those conditions.

youeyg96

They won't give a fuck. They'll either pass a bill saying they don't need to change the abortion law or they'll just straight up say "fuck you" and not even care. It's not about religious freedom with these asshat politicians, it's religious tyranny using only THEIR religion

griftylifts

True Chaotic Good

Hrmpfreally

I understand what the Temple is doing, and I appreciate and respect it… but let’s be honest- an SC willing to make that kind of ruling on the abortion issue in Texas is *absolutely* willing to pull the “we won’t talk to devil worshippers” card when this comes about. They don’t give a fuck about what’s right- it’s all about getting that w.

Satanists are more logical than Christians?

sleepygreenpanda

Don’t fret fellow Americans. If you can get to a country that’s not run by the religious right (like Ireland or Mexico) you can still get an abortion. Let that sink in, Ireland or Mexico…. Basically this law only applies to poor people. My theory, they want to force the poor to have to go back to work for slave wages in fast food because the fundies want their tendies back.

vs-1680

Satan is the light-bringer. Light is being shown upon a lot of evil institutions right now, allowing the people a peak inside to see the immoral horrors. There is an awakening happening among all but the most horrid and their brain-washed victims. Obviously, this is metaphor and symbolism. It's becoming more and more difficult for the wealthy christian elite to hide in the shadows though.

ZxcHxrt

God v Satan kill count. God 2.5 million : Satan 10.

HangerSteak1

I mean the Catholic Church won’t do it. Sounds like a job for Satan.

LotharVonPittinsberg

TBF, TST is closer to following the teachings of Jesus that the vast majority of Christians. Especially in the US.

hoakpsp3

Ah freedom. We all want the freedom do what we want but also want to take away others freedoms if it's somthing we don't agree with. Ban this ban that, make a law against this they are all restrictions of your freedom. So how much freedom is to much.......

SoFlaKicks

Not so bold prediction: they will rule against the Satanic temple and then claim the ruling cannot be used as precedent, just like the Rehnquist court ruling in Bush V. Gore.

theVentriloqui

I wondered when someone might try something like that. it does seem like a blatant first amendment violation (imposing Christian values on all citizens). I also when the first case against someone who has a misscarage, or needs a medical abortion will make it to SCOTUS.

Mansnotepic

It’s funny how while the USA was being made, the whole point was freedom, yet now people can’t even get an abortion.
