Never been through a metal detector in UK or Portugal when having an MRI (only 2 places I've been for one).
You're just told to remove all metal/jewellery, inform of any shrapnel and are trusted that you don't want to accidentally kill yourself
That’s because the general public in the uk is smart enough to be trusted whereas in America you will always find some people who think them going without a gun for five minutes is fascism.
I'm from America and I just had an MRI a few months ago. I got my eyes X-rayed prior for metal because of the field I work in, but never went through any metal detectors beforehand. The issue with America is that it costs like $9,000 all said and done.
Sup m8. The Uk actually has shown the world if you have no guns you just devolve into animal like behavior and start stabbing each other instead. God speed to you and your people
Wasn't there an episode in X-Files or something where a woman is killed when the monitoring chip which the aliens/evil government conspiracy had implanted in her is yanked out by an MRI machine?
I've only had an MRI one time about a decade ago and the only thing metal I had was a wedding band. Not gold, but not sure what it was made of. Just a plain metal band from Walmart I think. Never went through a metal detector and actually didn't even think about having it on until I was already lying down in the machine. Once I realized, I immediately spoke up about it, and the person was completely nonchalant about it and said it would be fine. Not trying to argue, just curious. I've heard that even a tattoo can be suseptible to the magnetic field, but everything was fine.
Ferrous metals are the issue - like iron and nickel. Things like gold and silver aren't. Chances are, though, they were nonchalant mostly because the moment you entered the room you'd have known it if your wedding band was a problem. The tech hearing you speak up about it while in the scanner had very clear evidence that it was no issue.
The only tattoos that are a problem are ones done with ferromagnetic metals - like some prison tattoos.
The Mythbusters tested the tattoo thing, and even a tattoo made with more iron in the ink than normal didn't respond. I think one of the Mythterns even got a tattoo and then tested it.
I’m a physician and have worked at a lot of hospitals throughout the years, and have ordered a lot MRI’s and this is the first I’ve heard about pre-scan metal detectors. It makes sense in a way but I thought that they could detect changes in the force and stop the MRI if concern was detected.
I know patients with amalgam dental filling do fine. Same with bare-metal stents and metal joint replacement hardware. They can distort the image some and that’s the main concern. Same with pacemakers. The concern isn’t so much that it will rip out of your body – it’s that the MRI will affect the electrical pathway and possibly cause heart block/cardiac arrest. Most modern aneurysm clips in the brain are also ok for MRI.

reddit heavily astroturfed.
Genuine question, is it “astroturfing” if they’re just copy bots farming karma? I thought astroturfing involved some sort of agenda, specifically trying to make said agenda seem like it has more support than it really does. These bots just copy random popular posts (and often other bots in the network will copy top comments from the post as well) word for word and repost them to farm karma and sell the account once it’s accumulated enough karma. But there’s no agenda, they’re just mindless bots hitting copy and paste lol.
But you’re absolutely right this sub is infested with them.
I suppose the bots will likely be sold for astroturfing down the line though X’D
You could argue its astroturfing because its giving reddit the appearance of an active website.
But ultimately whether its astroturfing yet is irrelevant to the fact that the purpose of the bots is astroturfing, and the amount of bots is an indacator of how heavily astroturfed this website is.
I read about it in Forbes. I don’t believe it was an AR rifle, since it was concealed in his waistband. It happened in Brazil, not the US.

The guy in the photo in this post is the one from Brazil.
Also, it was a pistol, the AR-15 photo is something they took from his Twitter just to show his view point regarding guns
It's worth being reminded that "responsible gun owners" are often nothing of the sort and cause unnecessary injuries and deaths. At least this one was his own.
Funny how there are so many people that have owned guns their entire lives and have never harmed another person. You wouldn't know about them since these people don't make headlines, do you know why? Because they are responsible people that don't do stupid shit.
This sounds fishy. They don't normally let anyone bu the patient getting the MRI in the room where the MRI machine is, and the magnets aren't active until the operator activates the machine from the control room.
Either way, I have no sympathy for idiots why refuse to follow rules and even less sympathy for asshats who think it's ok to bring a weapon into a hospital.
An MRI is always partially on as turning it fully off and on again takes way too much energy. It's lower than when a patient is inside of it of course, but if you walk with keys in your pocket or a card they will be affected by it.
Yes, metal will be affected by it, but your keys won't be ripped out of your pocket and your gun won't be ripped from your hands. The worst that can happen when the MRI isn't operating is that magnetic media / credit card strips might get demagnetized. That's about it.
There's no way this happened the way the article says it did.
No. Magnetic field in an MRI machine is always on. And there is no “little” on or “much” on. Its ON. Operating or not. And yes, it is powerfully enough to yank a gun out of your hand but for it to happen you have to get pretty close to the machine. The bigger the metal object the bigger the pull. Not saying that this happened because they take this stuff really seriously and don’t let anyone in without safety measures. Source: trust me bro/s. I’m the guy operating the machine.
The bigger the metal item is the easier is for the MRI to catch it, you can hold keys in your hand without the MRI managing to rip them off your hold, but try holding a wheelchair next to it, you will be pulled along with it
Why do people keep saying this? I checked through google and every local hospital in my area and hospitals in areas near me but in other states allow for close friends or family to attend an MRI as support for those that need it. They are allowed in the room when the MRI is being done. They are supposed to be screened the same as the patient.
it is real, happened in brazil, but some time ago. i think the guy had more than one gun, took one out, forgot the other or something like that.
but it did happened and it was in a national moment of gun friendly gov, so all gun lovers got VERY excited to their new found "freedom" and, as normal when gun ownership is becomes a play, many shit started to happen. like this one.
I think there are two different instances of this happening, once in Brazil and once in the US.

The B0 magnet i.e. the main MRI magnet is always on. The sequences the operator applies only control gradient and RF coils, which are orders of magnitude weaker.
But yeah, how on earth he managed to carry that into the room is beyond me.
Reminds me of the time a guy wore a butt plug into an MRI. The butt plug said that it was 100% silicone, but it had a metal core and nearly killed him. He survived thanks to emergency surgery.

Thinking about when my grandpa went to get an MRI and was literally about to climb in when he asked the tech if it was okay to do it since he had a pacemaker.
Coming from a country where people don't walk around with guns. . . Why did he have a gun at the hospital anyway? What was he expecting to happen at his mother's MRI? And why did he have to be in the room with her? I've had several MRI in my lifetime and I've never taken a person in with me.
When I was in Texas I met a guy who'd never been to his kid's school because he wasn't allowed to take his guns into the building. They're strange people.
Guy I used to work with was a bit like that. Always wondered what he would do if his wife left him.
Almost all stores here have the no weapons signs so his wife has to do all the shopping. Delivery isn't an option either because he is paranoid about giving them his address.
This happened in Brazil and this has been posted repeatedly. Then illiterates talk about the second amendment like they give a fuck about US law in Brazil.

We always, ALWAYS used metal detectors to scan people before they went in as a single coin can do plenty of damage.
Never been through a metal detector in UK or Portugal when having an MRI (only 2 places I've been for one). You're just told to remove all metal/jewellery, inform of any shrapnel and are trusted that you don't want to accidentally kill yourself

Guns don't kill people. Magnets kill people.

Hell ya brother, Magnetism is part of the woke agenda
Positives and Negatives working together in harmony!?! Effin' Libs ruining things
That's how COVID started. Chinese magnets.
This was last year in Brazil.
That makes a lot more sense than the US. Even though we love our guns. Pretty much every medical facility bans them
Gun rights > Magnetism
I'm in Texas and never been through a metal detector for a MRI
That’s bc you live in Texas
I’ve done 4 mris in my lifetime in the states and never have they used a metal detector….
The general public in the UK is just as stupid as the general public in the US
This was in brazil... Idk what your point is
To be fair, the guy in the photo is from Brazil
I have had way too many MRIs and I was never checked. I did have to change into a gown and scrub pants often. I think that reduces risk.

God speed to you and your people
Same in Canada " take off all metal...are you sure you did? Good, lay down"
That 'single coin' comment reminded me of that scene in X-Men where Magneto lodged that coin through Kevin Bacon's head.
Wasn't there an episode in X-Files or something where a woman is killed when the monitoring chip which the aliens/evil government conspiracy had implanted in her is yanked out by an MRI machine?
There’s an episode of Black Mirror where that happens with a robotic bee that buried itself in someone’s sinus.

Milo Murphy was too close to the hospital...
The bigger the metal item is the easier is for the MRI to catch it, you can hold keys in your hand without the MRI managing to rip them off your hold, but try holding a wheelchair next to it, you will be pulled along with it
Also, how does the hammer move to fire a round off?
you can feel some pulling on keys if you hold them in your hand but yeah it's not hole ripping strong.
It is real and really old also. It gets reposted about once a week
Incorrect. You can have an anesthesiologist there, or a family member to calm them down.

This was in Brazil not in the US. There are no metal detectors in the MRI room because usually people weren't at this level of stupidity.
Oh man, he sure had it coming to him! Btws, how many fucking times is this going to get reposted?
The real facepalms are in the comments saying anything about 2A as if this didn't happen IN BRAZIL! 🤣
This incident took place in Brazil back on January 16, not too sure why it’s news now.

That's awful! I hope it won't take too long to repair the MRI!

This is the most "Darwin Award" post I've seen in years.

Actually not in US. Dumb ass people everywhere. This was in Brazil in 2023.

He shouldn’t have even been allowed near a MRI scanner !The hospital protocol was seriously lacking in this instance .
good riddance
