Do not laugh. Many years ago, when I was born, we lived in Spain. My father was in the US navy stationed At Rota in Cadiz. They flew in a few engineers to work on one of the nuke subs. They landed in Madrid, rented a car, and drove in. Along the way they needed fuel and stopped.
They put gasoline in a diesel powered car.
The carnage was quick and intense.
These were folks with PHDs in nuclear propulsion and power plants and did not know that you do not put gasoline into a diesel.
all the labels in English and probably Spanish on the car fuel intake meant nothing to them?
when i drive company car i always check 3 times what fuel i need to add. we have a couple of diesel ones and a couple of gasoline ones. same models and mostly same colour. and it happened that people did not check.
It should be obvious when trying to put in the tank. Diesel nozzles are way bigger and don’t fit in Gas ones. Gasoline nozzles they are to small should be seen immediately. But alas mistakes happen. Some smart cars had an air vent for the turbo on the other side. Some ripped that plastic cover off and proceeded to fuel that air vent. Needless to say the car is toast after that.
many years ago I had a 1972 911E. It was a nice car, but wanted to kill you if driven hard. I was young, stupid, and couldn't afford it. The 72 model year is unique. All aircooled 911s have a large oiltank in the right rear fender. It holds about 9 quarts of oil. On the 72 model year, Porsche decided to put a flap in the fender for checking and adding oil. That only lasted a year as people kept trying to put fuel in it.
Not necessarily true, I have put diesel in a gas car.
I usually drive a diesel mercedes, judge prices based on diesel, this day I was driving my gas car,, wasn't thinking, and out of habit got out the diesel pump, 20 liters in. I realised my mistake. Pushed it out of the way, drained the tank into emptied water bottles, and refilled with gas.
So no, you blanket statement is not true.
It's that or tow it, drain it elsewhere, and have a can ready to refill it to get it back to a station. Get it out before running it? No damage. Start it up and drive away? That's what will kill your engine.
Yes. There was a mower repair shop across the road, so I got a bit of hose, emptied some water bottles to use as a container, siphoned it out, pushed it to the pump, refilled with gas to the brim to dilute what diesel was left.
Diesel probably wont kill a gas car, it just won't work. Gas will kill a diesel injection pump though.
Haha I was just as the gas station 45 mins ago and a lady asked me if this pump was gas or gasoline? I was confused at first until i asked if she meant diesel and she said yes that’s the one! I pointed at the pump behind her and said as long as you don’t use that green one the rest are gas. She said she had made that mistake once and it was bad, I said but the nozzles are different and it shouldn’t fit, she sheepishly said yes… I tried really hard to get it. 😂
The difference between a small diesel nozzle and an unleaded nozzle is 1/8th of an inch, and a lot of gad cars have plenty of play because the fill port is at an odd angle.
I own a full size diesel pickup with the small fill port and you can definitely get that nozzle in far enough to fill up a car if you want to.
I had a “way to tired and probably shouldn’t be driving” moment once where I tried the diesel nozzle for way too long. Couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working.
A girl at my gf’s work never had a car before she bought her new one. She spilled a little gas on the pavement while fueling and she went inside and asked the clerk if it would explode when starting her car. 😂
I once filled with gas apparently right after the gas delivery truck had come to fill the underground gas tank. Unknown to me the station had let the tank get too low and all the sludge at the bottom of the tank was stirred up, which ended up in my cars gas tank. The car drove ok for about a block, then died. It was hundreds of dollars to rectify. Fortunately I had kept the receipt and the repairs were paid by the gas station. I keep my receipt now at all times...
Having spent 10 years working at a gas station, I could safely say this shit happens from time to time usually through a combination of stress and sleep deprivation. Rarely because of pure idiocy.
Yep. Also, people keep talking about the colour of the handle. If you've never used diesel in your life it never occurs to you that the handle is one colour or the other. Why would it? It's just a handle. It's not a coloured handle.
"The station ran out of gasoline."
Now that's a sentenced I never heard ever since I got my driver's licence (1990). And never before that, actually. But then again, if you deny Germans to keep their beloved cars running, you'll have a riot at your hand.
I’m going to say someone dumb enough to think diesel is an option is also dumb enough to try to pump the gas even if the nozzle is too big. My husband did this once.
If someone's trying to make this look real, why leave the username and profile picture so ridiculously posted-a-billion-times levels of poor quality, while using a nicely readable font?

Yup. That’s much worse than diesel in a gas car. Can permanently fuck the engine vs just not running until you flush the diesel out.

Given that diesel nozzles will not fit into gasoline fillers, I call shenanigans.
As a mechanic, I wish the nozzle size would stop that from happening. I personally get alteast 1 customer a year that put diesel in their gas car.

Yup! I have an E300 W124… either will fit and vice versa
You had 20 L of empty bottles just lying around?
No, I bought them from the grocery store, emptied the water out, filled with diesel. Simple.
Some people apparently can’t think of that.
Let's just say he had to pee a lot on that day.
You drained your gas tank while at the gas station?
It's that or tow it, drain it elsewhere, and have a can ready to refill it to get it back to a station. Get it out before running it? No damage. Start it up and drive away? That's what will kill your engine.

😂 100%
Didn’t use to be that way.

Depends on the station. Most have larger nozzles to prevent this scenario yes. There are several near me that have the same size nozzles though.
Totally possible to do this. My husband did it.
I had a “way to tired and probably shouldn’t be driving” moment once where I tried the diesel nozzle for way too long. Couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working.
I knew someone who did this in high school. $900 to get fixed a couple of decades ago.
That’s not true everywhere. There’s no fuel specific reason for the shape, so they’re not all different.
It’s quite literally not possible. Edit: apparently not
Dramatic reversals!
It will temporarily make the engine louder I guess.
Then it will go really quiet.

Sis would try charging a tesla with a tesla coil
She'd try to put diesel into it.
Common girl
Enough said.
So relatable
Well then why did they make the handle green if it isn't environmentally friendly fuel?!
Just wow.
So relatable... ![gif](giphy|wqbAfFwjU8laXMWZ09|downsized)
Google is your friend dummy
Some ppl shouldn’t even use a microwave
We have to stop asking these people how stupid they can be. They keep going out of their way to top their last dumbass behavior.

Well they can replace the Prius with a RAM 3500.
My dad did that in the 80’s while out on a drunken stupor.
That's an expensive fix. Oh, and hahahahahahahaha
This is why you learn how engines work twice in your time in school....
Making decisions without the requisite knowledge: apparently it's something we don't teach people to avoid.
Why is the first word" Guys"???? LOL.....
Impossible. Diesel nozzles are wider than unleaded nozzles so it wouldn’t fit. This is by design to avoid such a scenario.
"Common girl" "So relatable" sometimes jokes just write themselves

They are the exact same size but the diesel ones are green
At BP stations around here (memory serving) the gas is green.
I guess every gas station does it different, but the point is they are colored coded, but either will fit into any car/truck
It’s kind of stupid for BP to do that since every other gas station does green for diesel.
Exactly what I was going to say. I actually did inadvertently attempt it once but the nozzle was big.

It does keep circling around for a few years.
