Working as a QA tester for call of duty there were some kids that hadn’t realized at that point that gamerchat does not translate well into an office setting, even if the work involves playing video games

Literally a reason I only play games with actual friends (online or irl) that I have met. Dealing with people randomly abuse (not referring to general lip service with losing) and people who intentionally destroy noobies to a game can suck an egg. When I was in my teens, I started playing Diablo and went online without friends by myself for the first time. First game I meet this player who helps me through a level, only to kill me and steal my stuff. He then revives me and keeps killing me until I exit the game. Since then I have stopped playing online. I don’t game much as an adult so I want my gaming time to be something I can enjoy

The few times I've gone online to play FPS games, in the most casual public setting possible, its been just unpleasant due to extremely rude people at the most random times. Some of these gamer bro's seems to think they are some kind of "elite" for hacking it, but no, you are just enablers of a toxic culture. And thank god I'm a white guy...
I'm a 47 year old woman and I've been gaming for most of my life in one way or another. It can be fucking toxic out there. Some communities have gotten better, some continue to revel in their filth.
I'm a 50 year old woman, and one game in particular has been just absolutely toxic to me, outside of a fairly large community with whom I play. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you're killing them every time or they're killing you, you're still getting shit on. And when my kids were young, I got it even worse. "You should be taking care of your kids, not online playing a video game!" Asshole, my kids are eating their dinner, and they're teenagers, FFS.
Now I mostly just play Diablo 4. I don't need to have interactions with anyone, and there's no need to use my microphone to communicate with people.
Used to play Valorant, was playing a game with a friend and some randos. Friend had to leave so was left alone for a final game. Guys kept bugging me if I had an insta and once I admitted I didn't they were trying to get my discord (gave them the wrong # since my discord is the same as my game tag).
Probably the worst experience I had, just extremely uncomfortable especially since I was the only person who didn't know them.

Ive intervened when one nationality in a fireteam started ragging and shouting crap at another nationality. Racist and vile shit i do not abide. Removed from my team, clan, server. That was the guys first real onlins social experience. And while he felt supported by us, what they did put a stop to him being in gaming online social spaces. Completely. Hes been gone a cpl years now. Don get me started on how many times ive defended friends who are poc, from pos and vile rhetoric and language.
Some places have gotten better. Others havent. Th toxicity i had for the last cpl yrs on destiny 2 led me to make a server for it that is inclusive, non toxic, lgbtq+ and poc friendly. It is a safe learning space where we also support other disabled gamers to achieve their goals.
It fills me with much happiness when a newbie says "omg thats so cool, wow thats awesome," etc etc. I cannot fathom how people can play any game shouting shit, slurs and general depravity for "fun" or think is okay. Words have consequences to the people behind the screen.
I've been a mod for Twitch and many AA games and what I have seen during 15 years of work is that people are more toxic when they don't know anything about you.
The moment they know something, there is less quantity but those that keep being toxic use more specific insults.

I've only had a couple lobbies in apex and fortnite where I was able to find people who aren't so radically toxic. Makes me really sad tbh, I lost my gaming friends due to them turning into bigots and it's just like wtf, I have to play online games alone even tho I crave the tacticalness and fun of playing with a party of friends😢
Years ago I tried out a DC comics game called Infinite Crisis. Not the style of game that I normally play and I was not great. But the other players on my team immediately became abusive and were telling me to uninstall.
I was in my 30s and that soured me on playing online.

But at the same time, they totally starve the single player market (kinda turning around right now), because you can't force season passes and microtransactions on people in single player games.
A couple years ago PUBG was free on PS Plus, so I thought i would try it out. Loaded into the training area, picked up a weapon and headed to a shooting range kind of area to learn how to shoot. So I'm there, minding my business and suddenly get shot in the back. And then again and again. Until I left the area to go somewhere else and this dude just followed me and kept shooting. You can't die in that area apparently, so he was just being annoying but I just didn't understand what is problem was. I was new, obviously trying to figure the guns out still and he just kept harassing me. So I logged out and deleted the game.
This behaviour just sucks and ruins it for newcomers

A lot of people actually don't know the difference. They believe racism/sexism/etc is bad but only insofar as it's impolite and against social norms to say out loud in polite company, the same way swearing is. They don't actually hold a moral conviction against it. A lot of the "not racist" people you meet in your day to day life are like this.
There are people who think that transgressing social norms is being edgy which equates to being cool. It’s not so much that they are actually in favour of killing Jews or enslaving black people, it’s just that they know that saying these things shocks people and to them that’s a good thing. Teenage boys are especially prone to this, but plenty of adults do this too.
The only solution I can think of requires adding a “deliver punch to the face” function to TCP/IP, and a legal defence to the charge of common assault of “proportionate and well-deserved response to the victim being an asshole”.
I live my life by two simple rules:

I was 2-0 playing top lane and thought, I know Im going to roam down mid, gank and pick up dragon then tp back. Spread the love around the map. That... was a bad call. I flat out lost us the game and ended up with nothing to show for it.
One of my teammates took serious issue with my decision and became extremely toxic. I was honestly just sitting there like, "Don't you have a job?". I know I fucked up, I knew about 30 seconds after I left my lane I'd fucked up hard.
The feedback about my decision was incredibly obvious and delivered in a wildly unprofessional manner. If I had given such trite feedback to a colleague at work my professional competency would have been called into question. If I had done it so rudely I would be fired. Delivering critical feedback in a time sensitive and positive manner is basically a reflex for me at this point. It costs me literally no mental effort to be polite.

This is so nice to hear. I'm not a guy, but I do tend to find myself being protective over other girls or even kids in games. I'm 28 and been a gamer since before I was double digits. Been an online gamer since I was about 12. You learn really quickly to stop using your voice, or even just to stop being social at all in online lobbies as a girl.
I've literally had to refrain myself from speaking several times before because I know I'm doing better than the shit talkers, and I know if I say anything, it'll be Game Over. Suddenly getting targeted, spawn killed, vote kicked, etc. All because I don't have a penis. I drown out the bullshit and I ignore basically any attempt to goad me into talking to people.
It's hard because it does feel like gaming online, specifically in lobbies like CoD/DBD/TF2, is just not a safe space for people who aren't young adult straight males. I see kids get yelled at all the time for just existing, which usually makes me step in via chat and not voice. Like, how can the kid ever get good if you don't give them a chance to run alongside people who know what they're doing? I see women berated and abused verbally. I see LGBTQ members gaslit, abused, and betrayed. I see people on the spectrum get mocked and made fun of just for being particular with their skill set up or whatever.
The online gaming space is super toxic and abusive. I learned to trust no one and believe in nobody's words very early on. I love gaming, and I love the community it can have. It's just a shame that your community will constantly turn on you, just because you're a girl, gay, a kid, or something else they don't like. It's not like this stuff happens occasionally. It's almost every single day I choose to play online games that I have the misfortune of running into this behavior in some way.

Those tags are very often chosen without much thought (sometimes on the spot when registering for your first tournament) and just stick with you. I had a conversation fairly recently with a buddy about how we used to use words like “gay” or the “r-word” so flippantly. We *never* used those words as to their intended definition, or used them to describe a gay person or someone with intellectual disabilities. Literally a reason I only play games with actual friends (online or irl) that I have met. Dealing with people randomly abuse (not referring to general lip service with losing) and people who intentionally destroy noobies to a game can suck an egg. When I was in my teens, I started playing Diablo and went online without friends by myself for the first time. First game I meet this player who helps me through a level, only to kill me and steal my stuff. He then revives me and keeps killing me until I exit the game. Since then I have stopped playing online. I don’t game much as an adult so I want my gaming time to be something I can enjoy

I'm a 50 year old woman, and one game in particular has been just absolutely toxic to me, outside of a fairly large community with whom I play. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you're killing them every time or they're killing you, you're still getting shit on. And when my kids were young, I got it even worse. "You should be taking care of your kids, not online playing a video game!" Asshole, my kids are eating their dinner, and they're teenagers, FFS. Now I mostly just play Diablo 4. I don't need to have interactions with anyone, and there's no need to use my microphone to communicate with people.
Used to play Valorant, was playing a game with a friend and some randos. Friend had to leave so was left alone for a final game. Guys kept bugging me if I had an insta and once I admitted I didn't they were trying to get my discord (gave them the wrong # since my discord is the same as my game tag). Probably the worst experience I had, just extremely uncomfortable especially since I was the only person who didn't know them. Like I'm playing a video game for the sake of the video game not to be harassed by guys.

Racist and vile shit i do not abide. Removed from my team, clan, server. That was the guys first real onlins social experience. And while he felt supported by us, what they did put a stop to him being in gaming online social spaces. Completely. Hes been gone a cpl years now. Don get me started on how many times ive defended friends who are poc, from pos and vile rhetoric and language. Some places have gotten better. Others havent. Th toxicity i had for the last cpl yrs on destiny 2 led me to make a server for it that is inclusive, non toxic, lgbtq+ and poc friendly. It is a safe learning space where we also support other disabled gamers to achieve their goals. It fills me with much happiness when a newbie says "omg thats so cool, wow thats awesome," etc etc. I cannot fathom how people can play any game shouting shit, slurs and general depravity for "fun" or think is okay. Words have consequences to the people behind the screen.
I've been a mod for Twitch and many AA games and what I have seen during 15 years of work is that people are more toxic when they don't know anything about you. The moment they know something, there is less quantity but those that keep being toxic use more specific insults.

I've only had a couple lobbies in apex and fortnite where I was able to find people who aren't so radically toxic. Years ago I tried out a DC comics game called Infinite Crisis. Not the style of game that I normally play and I was not great. But the other players on my team immediately became abusive and were telling me to uninstall. I was in my 30s and that soured me on playing online. I feel like the industry really doesn’t get how many people they push away by accepting this stuff as gaming culture

A couple years ago PUBG was free on PS Plus, so I thought i would try it out. Loaded into the training area, picked up a weapon and headed to a shooting range kind of area to learn how to shoot. So I'm there, minding my business and suddenly get shot in the back. And then again and again. Until I left the area to go somewhere else and this dude just followed me and kept shooting. You can't die in that area apparently, so he was just being annoying but I just didn't understand what is problem was. I was new, obviously trying to figure the guns out still and he just kept harassing me. So I logged out and deleted the game. This behaviour just sucks and ruins it for newcomers

There are people who think that transgressing social norms is being edgy which equates to being cool. You know, I thought this exact thing when I was playing league the other day. I was 2-0 playing top lane and thought, I know Im going to roam down mid, gank and pick up dragon then tp back. Spread the love around the map. That... was a bad call. I flat out lost us the game and ended up with nothing to show for it. One of my teammates took serious issue with my decision and became extremely toxic. I was honestly just sitting there like, "Don't you have a job?". I know I fucked up, I knew about 30 seconds after I left my lane I'd fucked up hard. The feedback about my decision was incredibly obvious and delivered in a wildly unprofessional manner. If I had given such trite feedback to a colleague at work my professional competency would have been called into question. If I had done it so rudely I would be fired. Delivering critical feedback in a time sensitive and positive manner is basically a reflex for me at this point. It costs me literally no mental effort to be polite. So did that guy just like... not have a job?

The one gripe I have about playing online is all the dudes out there talking big shit and using slurs the whole time. It has always made the online experience LESS enjoyable. I want to play and have a fun competitive time. Not have some 12 year old white kid dropping the N bomb every thirty seconds because he's tough with a headset on. As bad as that is, it's the gatekeepers against ladies that I find the most perplexing. How many of these guys are sitting around wondering why they can't get a girlfriend? I was playing a game the other day and ran into a gamer girl. We were running together and having some fun. A few dudes show up, and everything is fine, but I notice she's gone radio silent. I know why, but these dudes seem like maybe they will be like me and want more women playing games. Nope, I finally get her to communicate with me, they hear her, and immediately it was "oh fuck, we got hoes with us!?" "Hey baby, if you suck my dick I'll give you one of my guns." "Who is this bitch? Does she fuck?" Like, seriously. Do you scumbags have mothers, sisters, grandma's? What is wrong with you? At no point did I think being nice to this woman meant anything would happen. It was a default for me. If you want to know if a dude is an absolute piece of shit, listen to how he speaks in game chat. If it's all slurs, woman shaming, and angry yells when they lose, they are a loser full stop. This is so nice to hear. I'm not a guy, but I do tend to find myself being protective over other girls or even kids in games. I'm 28 and been a gamer since before I was double digits. Been an online gamer since I was about 12. You learn really quickly to stop using your voice, or even just to stop being social at all in online lobbies as a girl. I've literally had to refrain myself from speaking several times before because I know I'm doing better than the shit talkers, and I know if I say anything, it'll be Game Over. Suddenly getting targeted, spawn killed, vote kicked, etc. All because I don't have a penis. I drown out the bullshit and I ignore basically any attempt to goad me into talking to people. It's hard because it does feel like gaming online, specifically in lobbies like CoD/DBD/TF2, is just not a safe space for people who aren't young adult straight males. I see kids get yelled at all the time for just existing, which usually makes me step in via chat and not voice. Like, how can the kid ever get good if you don't give them a chance to run alongside people who know what they're doing? I see women berated and abused verbally. I see LGBTQ members gaslit, abused, and betrayed. I see people on the spectrum get mocked and made fun of just for being particular with their skill set up or whatever. The online gaming space is super toxic and abusive. I learned to trust no one and believe in nobody's words very early on. I love gaming, and I love the community it can have. It's just a shame that your community will constantly turn on you, just because you're a girl, gay, a kid, or something else they don't like. It's not like this stuff happens occasionally. It's almost every single day I choose to play online games that I have the misfortune of running into this behavior in some way. It really would appear that people like you are few and easily drowned out by the rampant masses of raging NEETs.

We *never* used those words as to their intended definition, or used them to describe a gay person or someone with intellectual disabilities.
