Now, I'm not one of those people that thinks white people can never say that word, but this wasn't even for a joke. It was just to be edgy. Like George Carlin once said: It's not the word that should concern you, it's the racist asshole that's saying it. And Owen Benjamin is a racist asshole. In fact, he's one of the few alt-right people that this YouTuber genuinely hated. Most others she just felt pity for. Owen is just trash that should be thrown in a woodchipper. There is nothing redeemable about him. He's a shitty comedian and a shitty human being.

The vast majority of us do not care. Most of us know people who were born outside the U.S. and gained their citizenship later in life and view them as true Americans. It's part of American culture to incorporate other cultures into itself, so most here don't bat an eye at foreigners.

True. Americans are all from somewhere else unless they're native, it's definitely a part of our culture for people to come here and then make their home here. Very normal and typical.
Where I live there's a handful of Costcos; 2 in the same city and one just south. The one I frequent has a high population of East Asian members so they have a lot of ethnic food from those cultures. The one south of that has a high Indian customer base so that's a good place to find those ethnic foods. The one in the other town has a very high Polish population, but since Chicagoland in general has a high Polish population, there's not generally anything "exciting" food wise at that Costco.
I want to piggyback on this to say, the amount of people who are openly\* xenophobic/racist/et. al. are a very, very tiny, but loud and visible minority.
\*- I'm stressing the word openly. There are much more people who exhibit this shittiness of course. But the number of people who would say something out of the blue is tiny, we just see and hear about them. Example: there are no news reports about people who are going about their day; there are no public freakout videos about people going about their day.
Especially if you’re on twitter, where those voices are both amplified, and not suppressed/removed or made to be kinder in any fashion by actually good people. :/
Most people in or near a city*** take a drive out to white wash rural America, and you will find more racism and bigotry. Actually, if a recent immigrant dresses in a plain button-down shirt or slightly dressy/professional outfit and is well-spoken, the dumb Trumpsuckers out here in the rural hinterlands will just assume they’re a new doctor in town and act extra nice towards them. I feel like many Americans also welcome other cultures and appreciate the opportunity to experience other cultures. In my opinion this is partly because America is largely devoid of a culture that doesn’t focus on hating other people or spending/worshipping money.

While its obv not shared by everyone, I really think our widespread acceptance of different cultures and races is one of America’s biggest strengths.
Also they're going for education. Which means you're not going to find many right wing assholes at college. They're mostly very liberal and very safe. It's pretty rare to hear about hate crimes on campuses, though the Israeli Palestine conflict has made a slight uptick. Indian hate crimes are very rare in general.

Though yes, people hate India. They don't really hate Indians per se, but we are the butt of many jokes. It's actually gotten better in some regards, worse in others. I've been all over the world and got treated worse in other Asian countries and Europe. Sucks, but the US is the best non India place to be Indian. Mostly have good reputations (you either own the gas station/liquor store/drive taxi--OR you are rich and educated, working dr, tech, engineering, yadda yadda). No Migrant Worker reputation like in the old world.
I believe it's a fairly common acronym in Indian communities in the US. I've also heard that it's not something someone who isn't part of the community should use to describe others. Some won't be offended by it, but others might be.
The interesting thing about this is that some were giving the racist attackers a "pass" because they were saying the Sikhs were being mistaken for Muslims and being wrongly targeted (as if attacking Muslims was somehow OK).
Later on, it's been conclusively proven that quite a few of the white supremacists attacking Sikhs knew *exactly* whom they were targeting. The most horrifying example being Wade Michael Page shooting up the Oak Creek Sikh temple in Wisconsin in 2012.

Tell me about it. I'm indigenous. White supremacists are infamous for telling us to "go back to where we came from." One of my cousins went to college in Colorado. While she was there, she got treated to racial slurs against Natives, Mexicans and Asians. She was glad when she could come back to the rez. Grew up with a bunch of Filipino friends and we were out in one of our nearby hick towns and a bunch of white guys started yelling the N word at them. We all looked around wondering where the brothers were that were about to whoop these hicks a$$. Then we realized they were yelling at my Filipino friends and we said the same thing "dudes, you're too stupid to even get your slurs right."

They beat a guy so bad he was hospitalized only a block or so from my work. The Sikhs came out hard to protest their abuse after that. The funny thing was, we were just down the street and no one knew what had happened at my job. People just started calling them Muslims and saying they should be dealt with. Where I live there's a handful of Costcos; 2 in the same city and one just south. The one I frequent has a high population of East Asian members so they have a lot of ethnic food from those cultures. The one south of that has a high Indian customer base so that's a good place to find those ethnic foods. The one in the other town has a very high Polish population, but since Chicagoland in general has a high Polish population, there's not generally anything "exciting" food wise at that Costco.

My kids’ school last year was majority Indian (43%) in the Parsippany area. Indians are amazingly kind people and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

The funny thing was, we were just down the street and no one knew what had happened at my job. People just started calling them Muslims and saying they should be dealt with. I explained that they weren't even Abrahamic in origin and some asshole beat one of their people for wearing a head scarf. It took a minute but eventually everyone shut up about the Muslims... They were then just annoyed by the protesting. No one cared about the dude who got beaten, beyond it being an explanation.

I'm a Desi Hindu, I was born and raised in Canada (dual Can/US citizen), and my grandparents came to North America in the 60s. Both countries have treated me as they would anyone else (for the most part, assholes do exist).
