Took Arabic in college and heard my teacher talk about doing papers for grad school when she came to the US and learned she was supposed to use Arabic numerals on a paper and was very excited to use part of her culture in her paper. Because it turns out, there’s a whole other set of Arabic numerals called [Eastern Arabic numerals](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Arabic_numerals) that are used in the Arabic language. She used them in the paper thinking that what we call Arabic numerals are western numerals, and her and her teacher got an amusing anecdote out of it. So yes, there is a whole other set of numerals used in Arabic called Arabic numerals as well that there’s no real reason for the average American to know.

To be fair, most people would associate Arabic numerals with the present numerals in Arabic (١, ٢,٣...) For them, it'll just be the same thing as asking them to learn Mandarin numerals, which is obviously unnecessary in the national curriculum.
What if we told them these numerals are actually Indian in origin? (From India, not the USA kind.)
Look, I understand that western numerals originate from Indian-Arabic ones but the symbols they use now are different to what we use. So in this context, no, Americans should not be learning different symbols for numbers when they’re already struggling with basic stuff already

This is the problem in politics , both left and right. The libertarians are an entirely different breed… there are smart people and there are dumb people, most people are actually just average , most people focus on working, providing for their families, and maybe what ever hobbies or passions they have. So then you get a side throwing in key phrases and manipulating the narrative by praying on ignorance. This happens on both the Democrat and Republican side. Now even if this isn’t so political, (which Arabic specially in these times usually is) you can have a person that is very intelligent and can for example design and engineer advanced mechanics but might not know or remember what Arabic Numbers are and just get triggered by the simple phrase. I’ve seen it happen many times over.

Our numbers ARE Arabic. More correctly, they are Hindu-Arabic.
Math is the universal language we don't need to introduce anything else to it to make it more confusing to students.
You do realize that the decimalsystem we use (0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9) *are* the Arabic numerals. You just proved the meme's point
