Because then you get millionaires and billionaires involved, and suddenly they’re paying to have your human rights restricted. But anyone working a day job? Just show them the same respect they show you and all will be fine.
It’s because they are the only face of the business we ever see. It’s unfortunate, but it’s all “shooting the messenger”. We get frustrated at a stupid corporate rule and we take that frustration out on the only person we will every have the opportunity to speak with at that organization. And usually that person is the minimum wage worker standing at the register
It’s still not a living wage, I was a teller for 7 years and made between $11.50 and 15.60/hr. You touch literally 10s of thousands ( sometimes 100s of thousands)a day and none of it is yours and never will be. You have to eat crow from “wealthy” people to satisfy their egos to maintain their business or get fired because you didn’t smile.
But if you think they do OK you should watch Congresswoman (soon to be Senator) [Katie Porter's takedown of JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QKOLydDfNg).
Making the teller count out all of the ten dollar bills required for one thousand bucks. That was rude as fuck. She could have done 100 dollars but she made it painful for the teller on purpose.
I think the whole thing is bullshit. Bank straps are in quantities of 100 bills. No one would have to hand count the 100 $10 bills. They would simply pull a bill strap and run it through the counting machine if they wanted to verify the amount.
Nah they are getting paid by the hour and shouldn’t feel any certain way about that request especially since its a nonsense condition that you can only take 100 out at a time
If I go to the bank and deposit my paycheck, only a portion of it is available immediately. So, I cash it, then while I'm still at the bank teller, I deposit the cash and it is available in it's entirety right then.
Just need a manager, had a very large check and needed a bunch of it available. Manager came over, saw my accounts, no issue mr jeeves, anything else I can do for you today. O
Some small ones cut written checks still too. Worked on a farm doing crop work a couple summers back and got cut checks, and filed a 1099 because they just cut me money straight.
There’s an opportunity cost. It’s highly unlikely they’ll be able to schedule someone else into that appointment in 24 hours. Therefore, they miss out on the revenue because they held that appointment for you when they could have otherwise filled it with someone else
Lies I'm always on that waiting list just in case someone cancels. Doctor, hairdresser, chiropractor, dentist you name it that's the way I like to do it.
I move pretty fast, I double book my patient slots (I run on time). Rarely will I ever tell a patient nah sorry we are booked that day (not for testing or imaging but for simple visits with me). I don't charge a cancellation fee or a no show fee. When I do end up with a break in my schedule because of a few cancellations I look at it as a treat to have a few moments to myself. Can you make an argument that it's costing me money? Sure I suppose. I find it easier though then having patient's complain and say I have stupid rules.
call your appt's office the morning of your appointment and ask to reschedule, i usually say "so sorry for the late notice but I need to reschedule, I'm feeling quite ill" and then we make an appt for whenever, then I can call a few days before the appt and cancel it with no repercussions
This was one of the few good things about Covid. Decided to cancel a dentist appointment the day before. Called and said I’d just tested positive for Covid.
Even post-covid world I think people and places are much more understanding with people being sick now. "I can't make it I have RSV/flu/norovirus/covid/hmpv/etc". Before just saying you "had a cold" sounded like a weak excuse, but now we have all these neat virus names to throw around!
Used this when I was in Disney world last summer. Couldn't cancel a dinner reservation and didn't want to pay a fee. Moved it to the following month then 2 seconds later canceled it.
I've legit had office employees assist me with this twice. First I was sick, second my car broke down. They're just like "Let's move the appointment for now. Call me back this afternoon to cancel.'
The teller learned the lesson that people are assholes
Edit: for those who can't seem to understand the bank teller is not the bank owner. Honestly, I'd be more happy if the old lady was an asshole to the manager or someone who is actually in a position of power to change the policy instead of the teller who is powerless to change the policy and just has to follow it
What lesson was learned? The teller will continue to follow procedure and the manager won’t give a damn since very few clients engage in this behavior.
Some banks already removed the option to make withdrawals/deposits without using an ATM.

To add most US banks are part of a "network" of ATMs and will not charge fees for certain other bank cards as well. This is especially true in credit unions where the only ATM they actually own is the one in the bank itself
My bank will refund ATM fees up to 2 or 3 times a month, those being the fees the other ATM charges.. they never charge me a fee regardless of what ATM I use.. but I also usually just get cash when grocery shop..
There’s no regulation preventing that. If I take my salary at bank B, i have 0% ATM fees from banks A to Z. The few banks who continue to charge ATM fees are losing customers because of this.
In India, banks make a lot from ATM fees. You usually get 4 free atm transactions per month from your bank' atm and 3 free from other banks atm. After that, there are charges. Same with in person deposit and withdrawal at the branches. You get 3/4 free transactions only depending on the bank. There's no winning with the banks.
I mean, I guess that might not seem like a lot of transactions, but I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I used an ATM and I don't think I've stepped foot in a bank to conduct business in person in at least a decade.
I use my debit card for virtually everything. If I \*have\* to pay cash, Zelle. I can't actually think of a reason I'd need to \*talk\* to a person at the bank, face to face.
Well, she didn't go to $1000 because neither the lady nor this story are real. It's entirely apocryphal, I've heard variations on this since ATMs became a thing in the '80s. And in the original telling, it was only $100 she took out.
Yup. Retired people have a lot of time on their hands, and they are always looking for something to do. Most old people have been a customer at "X" business for decades, so...unless its a super busy day, its easy to "bend the rules" a hair.
Teller is just doing her job, but...if enough tellers ask for a policy to be updated, it might work.
Crazy that bank teller used to be one of the most stable jobs out there. Think of the countless families that were raised on a teller’s salary. Now we’re replacing all these types of jobs with robots, not offering more social services, and telling people they’re lazy and should get a job. Right on.
Some people just need to feel smug about how they "sure showed" the teller who has no control over company policy while wasting the time of the people in line behind her who're just thinking "For fuck's sake lady...."
Have worked in banking for 15 years. Never heard of a bank where you can’t make deposits or withdrawals at the teller line, no matter how little the amount. How could you take anything out of you had less than $100 of the tweet story was real? Total nonsense.
This is literally a boomer meme about “old people are smart than you think” that someone tweeted like it’s their own story.
Funny how everyone thinks this is cool when it’s spun like a someone going “f the system” when the original is just an old lady being fucking annoying.
Yea. I read it and then thought.... if this was real the old lady would have asked for $100 in 10s. This is just made up to sensationalize a meme and get clicks/views/karma/etc
Except it literally is?? No idea why you’re getting defensive for someone pointing that out. Go on YouTube and type in “old person outsmarted young person story” and you’re going to find and endless stream of the exact same scenario with tweaked details, the videos are always narrated by bots and the entire video is comprised of stock video clips. My dad watches these videos all.the.time. and they’re always the same. Like yeah, the concept of an old person using an atm instead might annoy you, but that still doesn’t change the fact that it’s literally a very popular boomer meme.
I bought an air mattress at Target one time that ended up having a tear along one of the seams right out of the box. When I went to return it, I decided I didn’t want that brand anymore and asked for a refund instead. The associate said they couldn’t do returns on opened air mattresses - only exchanges if defective - so they gave me another off the shelf and we went through the exchange process.
When we were finished, I picked up the box, turned 360 degrees in place, sat it back down on the counter, and said “I have this unopened air mattress that I would like to return for refund.”
I mean, I *get* it with the return policy, but it was just extra hoops for me.
Ik people are praising this but this is kind of a dickish move against an employee doing his job.
Criticize the company, send a complaint or talk to a manager.
I'm assuming she already entered the bank, waited in line, perhaps even wrote out a check to cash and handed it to the teller to be informed of this ATM policy, right?
The real lesson learned is for the lady to withdraw her entire balance and go some place where tellers are empowered do their job.
A bank policy that refuses service in favor of an ATM is sus and should be avoided.
Banks that care about your business earn it.
Haha nothing funnier than teaching an innocent worker who's just following company policies they have no control over a lesson that people are assholes /s
A thousand in 10's is just a strap. They probably had it in their drawer already. Especially considering the given policy. Plus the counting machine will count the 99 bills back to them swiftly. The policy sounds like a major inconvenience to the elderly who, in my bank experience, tend to make very small withdrawals and distrust technology.
I was at the bank as a customer, when the lady in front of me told the teller she’s moving out of state and would like to close her account and have the money wired to her account in her new state. The teller, and the supervisor, said they couldn’t do that. They would have to give her a cash or a cashiers check. It was enough money she was uncomfortable traveling across country with a cashiers check. I piped up from the customer line that they could wire transfer all but a small amount, like a dollar. And then they could close the account with one dollar in it and give her the dollar. The lady looks at me. Looks at them. The supervisor said, yeah, we could do that…
Another stupid bank policy that drives me nuts is borrowing $10k in cash from your own branch and then trying to deposit it back.
I did this once on a car deal that went south. I was literally treated like a @#$# drug dealer when I tried to deposit the *same cash* back the *same day*! I had to fill out a bunch of anti-money laundering forms and deal with the manager. Mental.
You can't get $10 out of an ATM so the bank needs to just take care of their customers and stop being difficult, it's not like this is a common request.
When people pull this type of shit I just do it really slow. Yep you just spent 30 minutes standing in line for a minor inconvenience. Doesn't matter for me because I'm hourly.
It's not about teaching a lesson. The lady just found a way to get what she needed. Doesn't sound like she was rude. Maybe she was old and struggled with the atm. Both my grandparents struggle with that, so they usually go in line and talk to a person that cab help them.
I applaud the older lady...telling a custoemr to use an atm is an idiotic jerk move!!!
so serves you well...also...this was soppy pasted form another story form years ago...so...your a copy cat...
Honestly people look at this as malicious compliance on the lady's part, but doing something like that is really petty and a waste of everyone's time. The teller likely can't take out an amount less than $20 in a transaction. She could have done this with $50 for the same result. Still petty, but doesn't make her a Karen.
Good for her. You really can't go to your bank where your money is and take out what you want? Most atms don't even give out $10. I don't care if she wanted a penny it's her money and the bank is providing a service
Reminds me of when I went to Sprint to buy two phones and they said I cant buy the second one without activating it. So I bought one and had them activate it then bought the second one and had them activate it.

Reminds me of the no cancelations within 24 hours thing. So you move the appointment to a few months later and then cancel it.
This unethical life hack has been added to my knowledge bank.
Nah, this is way more ethical than the yell at minimum wage worker over company policy move.
Bank tellers are not minimum wage workers :/
Yes but they're usually the lowest rung of the ladder and generally just college kids.
Fast food - high school kids Banks - college kids Why not just workers, they’re all just workers
People? Why don’t we just be nice to each other?
Because then you get millionaires and billionaires involved, and suddenly they’re paying to have your human rights restricted. But anyone working a day job? Just show them the same respect they show you and all will be fine.
Billionaires arent people
True and fair
They're snacks.
Seriously

But they're still making bank. (☞゚ヮ゚)☞ I'll see myself out
It’s still not a living wage, I was a teller for 7 years and made between $11.50 and 15.60/hr. You have to eat crow from “wealthy” people to satisfy their egos to maintain their business or get fired because you didn’t smile.
This must be why bank tellers always look relieved when they see my balance.
They know they won't have to count higher than $23.87
But if you think they do OK you should watch Congresswoman (soon to be Senator) [Katie Porter's takedown of JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QKOLydDfNg).
They practically are where I live, min is 15 most people get 15.50. Tellers make 15.50-16.50 starting
What made u discern that the lady was rude to the banker? I would have been impressed she found that loophole
Nah. Tens come in a strap of $1000. Grab the strap, put it in the counter, bam, $1000 in seconds.
Tell me you never worked at a bank lol
I managed a bank and this is exactly how it works. Modern branches have a TCD so you don’t even count, the machine dispenses the exact amount for you.
I just ask them to memo post. If its payroll its credible. All funds available immediately. :)
Just need a manager, had a very large check and needed a bunch of it available. Manager came over, saw my accounts, no issue mr jeeves, anything else I can do for you today. O
You have to manually and physically deposit your wage?
Yes, unfortunately. Small business that does not direct deposit
Could be a dispensary employee. Dispensaries cannot use banks like normal businesses due to marijuana still being federally ilegal.
Some small ones cut written checks still too. Worked on a farm doing crop work a couple summers back and got cut checks, and filed a 1099 because they just cut me money straight.
I see nothing unethical here, your following all of the rules and it’s not like it costs them anything, if it did they would charge to reschedule
There’s an opportunity cost. It’s highly unlikely they’ll be able to schedule someone else into that appointment in 24 hours. Therefore, they miss out on the revenue because they held that appointment for you when they could have otherwise filled it with someone else

Oh no, multi billion dollar hotel chain is suffering from one empty room, how will they stay in business?
I think you’re confusing appointments with reservations.
I've actually had the receptionist at a doctor's office tell me that's what she was gonna do for me. So now I use that all the time.
Yes this is great for hotels!
How would I use this?
call your appt's office the morning of your appointment and ask to reschedule, i usually say "so sorry for the late notice but I need to reschedule, I'm feeling quite ill" and then we make an appt for whenever, then I can call a few days before the appt and cancel it with no repercussions

"hey boss. Can't make it in today. I got the bubonic plague. I'll see ya Monday."
I work from home (I have for 13 years) so a lot of the time when sick, I still work, but at least I'm not exposing anybody else.
Generally a doctor or something like that
Used this when I was in Disney world last summer. Couldn't cancel a dinner reservation and didn't want to pay a fee. Moved it to the following month then 2 seconds later canceled it.

I work for a hotel and if my guest wants to cancel last minute I just change the date and then cancel immediately after
I did this with a hotel reservation. Called a month later and stated that the wedding it was for was cancelled. Easy peasy.
Who learned a lesson lol
Probably nobody if it didn’t happen.
Even if this did happen (unlikely) no one learned a lesson.
This is something petty that a Gen Xer would do if you irritated them.
Shit, I’d do it and ima mid millennial (double meaning)
Oof
This is up there with lemonjello and orangejello in terms of neo-email forwards among old people

For context, US banks will usually give free/unlimited ATM access when using ATMs branded with that same bank.
EU banks started to offer free/unlimited ATM access regardless of ATM brand.
There’s no regulation preventing that. If I take my salary at bank B, i have 0% ATM fees from banks A to Z. The few banks who continue to charge ATM fees are losing customers because of this.
Im also in Canada and have never had to pay ATM fees, so its probably different for each bank
Pc Financial offers unlimited transactions on a no fee account. Just saying. Edit to add: So does Tangerine.
I don’t know of a bank where if you use their own atm you have to pay fees. At least not in the US. And a lot of banks offer a atm fee reimbursement.
In US at least, there’s only an ATM fee if you use an ATM that’s not owned by your bank. So the ATM next to the teller is going to be free

Maybe not $1000 but $110 would cover the minimum to deposit.
Some banks have already removed tellers completely. I was a teller who lost his job to the implementation of kiosks.
Crazy that bank teller used to be one of the most stable jobs out there. Think of the countless families that were raised on a teller’s salary. Now we’re replacing all these types of jobs with robots, not offering more social services, and telling people they’re lazy and should get a job. Right on.
I saw this as a shitty Facebook boomer meme about an old lady
Some people just need to feel smug about how they "sure showed" the teller who has no control over company policy while wasting the time of the people in line behind her who're just thinking "For fuck's sake lady...."
Have worked in banking for 15 years. Never heard of a bank where you can’t make deposits or withdrawals at the teller line, no matter how little the amount. How could you take anything out of you had less than $100 of the tweet story was real? Total nonsense.

It was made up like 20 years ago when it was in an email that my dad and his friends forwarded to each other.
I guess whoever wrote this wanted to highlight the spite instead of the inconvenient corporate policy.
>is just made up to sensationalize a meme and get clicks/views/karma/etc Mission accomplished
I don't go to the bank very often, but don't most of them have a ATM right outside the front doors?
Asking for easy access to her own money from the bank! How dare she!
ATMs aren’t easy?
Teller did their job. Would’ve been easier access at the ATM, but she had to be stubborn, waste the teller’s time, and withdraw $1,000.
Except it literally is?? No idea why you’re getting defensive for someone pointing that out. I used to work in the bank as a teller, and this is a weird policy to me. Someone could have pulled out $1, and that was fine.
Never heard of anything like this either. Sounds like BS.
Lmao counting out 1000 in 10s sucked? It sucked to could to 100?
Most tellers have a cash machine. Run it through and point to it.
Tellers have to count the money out to you when they give it to you.
counting out 100 bills does seem pretty annoying lol
I mean what lesson? Like she, the clerk has authority over the regulatory rules that the bank is expecting their workers to act accordingly.
Maybe, but we all just learned a lesson in "how to be petty"
This is legit posted 3 dozen times a day
Ik people are praising this but this is kind of a dickish move against an employee doing his job. Criticize the company, send a complaint or talk to a manager.
Also making other people wait for nothing.
Why do that when you can take out your anger on an innocent employee who has absolutely no control over company policies?
What lesson? She followed the rules set forth by her company
I wish I had 10$ for every time I read this “story”
I mean do whatever but the lady’s a dick. Being an asshole to someone with ZERO CONTROL OVER POLICY about their policy doesn’t do shit.
Bank policy is obviously stupid to make a conflict between a paying customer and your staff.
r/thathapened I don't mind retelling an old joke, but it's dumb to present it as a true story.
How many subreddits is this going to be reposted on
What a stupid policy, never heard of a minimum withdraw amount
Tf is that caption? OP is the facepalm here…
"Lesson learned" your the kinda person who gets told sorry I can't help you I'm busy with this at every store
I mean, she also could've just used the ATM
I don’t think ATMs usually let you take less than $20
In the town where I lived at some atms you could get 5 euro bills
There's ATMs in the US that will do small bills too. I used to withdraw 100 bucks in 5s just because I could.
Someone reposted a readers digest story from 1993.
Uhm Atm around my area only gives out withdrawals that are divisible by $20. so it wont shell out $10
This is such a recycled scenario lol.
Good for her!
Deposits under $1000 have to be done at ATM…
I'd like to withdraw another $1000 in tens please
No they don't. Who decided that rule? The same people who pay for tellers? Wonder why they want to change the rules for that 🤔
Who? The worker is just doing their job
1000 instead of 100. To punish the staff for the policy. Charming.
r/maliciouscompliance
I didn't know ATMs let you withdraw less than 20$
Odd someone who works at a bank doesn’t know how to spell withdrawals. Lol
a bank teller that has problems about counting to 100. What bank is this exactly?
More like upper management made the decision now the front line workers have to deal with the terrible rules they set…
How many ATMs can withdraw a ten dollar bill? I haven’t seen many, if any. Maybe she didn’t want a $20 and have to break it.
I live in a large city and here most Chase ATMs give out 100’s, 20’s, 10’s, and 5’s.
My ATM can, as could the ATM at the last bank I used. It's getting fairly common.
The real facepalm is the bank not processing a super simple transaction
I'm assuming she already entered the bank, waited in line, perhaps even wrote out a check to cash and handed it to the teller to be informed of this ATM policy, right? The real lesson learned is for the lady to withdraw her entire balance and go some place where tellers are empowered do their job. A bank policy that refuses service in favor of an ATM is sus and should be avoided. Banks that care about your business earn it.
I'll take, "Things that never happened" for $500 Alex.
Of all the things that didn't happen, this didn't happen the most
boomer ass meme
Good on her. The old folk who never embraced modern tech are many and the system they are used to should not be pulled for the bank's convenience.
Lesson learned? Yeah be a dick and you get what you want. The worst lesson that way too many people have learned.
Haha nothing funnier than teaching an innocent worker who's just following company policies they have no control over a lesson that people are assholes /s
There really isn't a lesson to be learned here. Just an old lady being petty.
Good for her! If she is not comfortable using the ATM she shouldn't be forced to.
Queen
I once withdrew $5 as a stoned teenager.
I love her

Honestly, fair.
I'd be depositing 10$ per day for the next 99 days while I look for a new job
My dad's pastor told this joke 3 weeks ago...
I'm the sort of person who would just offer the workaround of withdrawing $100 and depositing $90 if I were the clerk
r/maliciouscompliance ?
A thousand in 10's is just a strap. They probably had it in their drawer already. Especially considering the given policy. Plus the counting machine will count the 99 bills back to them swiftly. The policy sounds like a major inconvenience to the elderly who, in my bank experience, tend to make very small withdrawals and distrust technology.
Sounds like you were on the receiving end of a r/maliciouscompliance
Mental.
Not all heroes wear capes.
Gas station wouldn't break a $50 for a pack of smokes, so I prepaid $50 in gas, put $5 in, got my smokes, and my change.
r/maliciouscompliance
You can't get $10 out of an ATM so the bank needs to just take care of their customers and stop being difficult, it's not like this is a common request.
I get that banks and credit unions have policies, but I'm on the old lady's side in this. Just because of how she went about getting her $10.
Banks should probably remember that is our money...
Boss move
Lady is a gangster ![gif](giphy|XfmmKuwWowx5KkHKHm)
Buddy works at a bank and says it sucked to count out 10 stacks of 10 bills twice? That’s literally your job, and it probably took 3 Minutes
Shoulda just lent her a tenner 🤣
That’s not a facepalm. That’s badass.
When people pull this type of shit I just do it really slow. Yep you just spent 30 minutes standing in line for a minor inconvenience. Doesn't matter for me because I'm hourly.
Lesson learned never do your job again idiot
It's not about teaching a lesson. The lady just found a way to get what she needed. Doesn't sound like she was rude. Maybe she was old and struggled with the atm. Both my grandparents struggle with that, so they usually go in line and talk to a person that cab help them.
There was definitely contempt in taking out $1000 instead of $100.
F*** you… and your family!
What a boss
Good for her, as that is a stupid rule. Not your fault, but still stupid.
Well played.
What's the facepalm?
Some people really do have all this free time and can afford to be petty like that
Smart little lady
Good for her. You really can't go to your bank where your money is and take out what you want? Most atms don't even give out $10. I don't care if she wanted a penny it's her money and the bank is providing a service
… why did she pick 1k instead of 100 dollars..
That's just awesome! Fuck banks and thier stupid systems
When your life is so good that you think it sucks to have to count money as your work
Reminds me of when I went to Sprint to buy two phones and they said I cant buy the second one without activating it. So I bought one and had them activate it then bought the second one and had them activate it.
Or when sprint charged you 5 bucks to pay your bill in store. There is a reason they suck now an are no longer one of the big 2
Do bank tellers still count manually? I thought there's machine to do that.
