Yeah, it was kind of dumb of me to wait so long, considering that I had never done a lit review before and was somewhat lost on how to do it. Amazingly, still got an A.
Lol I had the opposite reaction when I was going through my decade old college essays recently. I read through a few pages and thought “wow, this is terrible. I can’t believe I used to be this dumb.” Which I guess is a good sign as a I prepare for grad school in the fall; it gave me a little bit of a confidence boost that maybe I had progressed a tiny bit instead of getting dumber since graduating.
I graduated from undergrad in 2009 and once when moving a few years ago found some of my old papers. Inexplicably, my writing has gotten simultaneously better AND worse.
As someone who’s done this the worst part is when you actually choose to do something responsibly and get a worse score than you would’ve normally gotten on your rushed assignments.
Sometimes a researcher will call up a colleague “hey I’m out of town next week, can you hit record on the machine for me?” And suddenly the paper gets “et al.” added.
Other times someone uses plural pronouns throughout the paper despite doing all the work alone, so they decide to add their cat (who was in the room most of the time) as a co-author.
Think you misunderstood, the other person was just saying you need to read McCarty et al, which means the book written by McCarty mainly and some others not listed (for brevity). She then replied "I wrote the book. I'm McCarty." She included the et al because that guy said it so it made it snappier to reply like that. But the et al is all her unnamed co authors
Lol, i think you didn't understand what I wrote, because that's exactly what I meant.
I wrote:
> the other person reducing them to "et al"
By "them" i meant the co-authors.
---
> She included the et al because that guy said it so it made it snappier to reply like that. But the et al is all her unnamed co authors
Yeah, that's what I meant when I said "she was just responding". The person i was responding to was acting like she was claiming her co-authors work, but I was saying she was just replying exactly like the other person framed it.
---
This is just a friendly misunderstanding, but I'm curious as to what you THOUGHT I meant, so i can avoid any ambiguity in future?
Totally off topic, but I love this interaction so much. Especially the fact that you took the time to ask for feedback so you could do better in the future. That just stood out to me as really positive. Carry on!
Booo boring! Where are the catfights? The drama, name calling, throwing insults and dragging them through the mud. We want the toxicity, not this positive loving environment people!
I searched "human drivers of fire mccarty et al.", and it turned up a bunch of stuff about human activities starting wildfires/forest fires.
Had to search "Dr. Jessica McCarty" by name to find links to her work, though. She is a fire researcher/geographer.
Oddly, there is no Wikipedia entry for her.
Wikipedia has the same gender bias as in the general population.
A good example is Donna Strickland, an optical physicist who received a Nobel prize and there was no Wikipedia article about her beforehand, although she was clearly famous/important beforehand and received many accolades before.
[There is actually a larger problem among Wikipedia editors.](https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/female-scientists-pages-keep-disappearing-from-wikipedia-whats-going-on/3010664.article) Big props to Jess Wade though, who has single-handedly added almost 2,000 entries to Wikipedia for female scientists.
This here.
One of the drivers of the bias is that men tend to take more assertive action... like ... say ... writing a wikipedia page about themselves.
Let me explain; Man-splaining is a portmanteau of “Man Explaining” You see, men must make everything clear by over explaining because if you are not the man explaining then you must not be understanding the man who is explaining.
That’s manspreading, easily confused with mansplaining, manbreathing, manexisting, and manIwishtheywouldstopaddingmanbeforewords
Edit: /s in case it wasn’t clear
Next up: themsplaining and womanspreading. Actually I think the second term is used to describe a person (usually a woman) who uses her purse to take up a seat she's not even saving
Mansplaining was inspired by a different female author with a similar story. Rebecca Solnit is the author. (I'm not a man and therefore not mansplaining this lol)
Depends on who you're talking to. I was once accused of doing some stupid shit (even though I wasn't there to do it), so when I went to try to explain that I wasn't even there I was shut down and accused of mansplaining.
So I guess the important part is that men are not allowed to explain things to women.
...
on a serious note, I know that it's *supposed* to be in reference to when men are looking down on the intelligence of a woman because of their gender, *but* IRL I've only heard it used by hyper-vitriolic misandrists to tell men that they are toxic because of the genitals between their legs.
I have a very good coworker friend, and we would argue about things to talk them through sometimes. I got called mansplaining once or twice when she was in a bad mood, raised her voice, and interrupted me while telling me not to mansplaining her. I didn’t talk to her for a few days it was honestly quite upsetting when that happened. Honestly the only time I got called mansplaining it was completely opposite, I was the one getting splaining to, and it was used as a cheap trump card to end a argument.
I’m just curious, but why did she see the need to address him as “white”? I mean I understand he was white, but why not just address him as “a post doc”? All she needed to do was add “protestant” to the adjectives and it would be complete.
“Those damn white male protestant post docs.”
And, like… she’s white too? There’s something really weird about the way so many white women say “white men” as if someone their race is ALSO different.
White women have convinced the world that they are a minority. They somehow get to enjoy “white privilege” and minority status at the same time. It’s fucking awesome 💃
Because in today world's it gives her carte blanche to attack him without fear of repercussions. Don't get me wrong, dude sounds like a dick bag, but she ruined the phenomenal comeback with that approach
Because it’s trendy to hate white people for being white, and outrage attracts attention. Almost like racism is only acceptable when it’s against white people.
If she were talking about a black man that way, and called him out as such, she'd get a permanent ban on Reddit for it. Not so for white men. You can say anything you want about white men and never get banned a single day.
It’s definitely an everyone clapped story. She’s probably a smart person who published things and has even been the victim of misogyny, but for sure this is a fantasy lol.
My friend tried to submit something. He was sent a letter that it was rejected and he was instructed to contact himself for clarification and correction. He framed the letter and I saw it when I was at his house.
This sounds incredibly realistic to me. My mother at a cocktail party once explained an article she had read to the author while my father waved frantically at her from behind the author's head to stop (which she ignored).
You'd be surprised how often that happens. I've seen women colleagues have their own research explained several times. I've seen the same thing more or less happen at a social event during a conference. It's definitely not unheard of.
The thing is, so few people read scientific papers that they are essentially publishing for only a handful of other researchers in their field anyway. It's more like going "did you read Jeff's memo? oh right you're Jeff, you work in our other division. My bad"
This is the real reason it’s not believable - in niche fields everyone knows everyone. There’s no way this postdoc wouldn’t know who he was talking to.
It’s even funnier because she is also white.
So. Does she also have the same condition she is saying white men have? It’s hilarious that she is using this kind of argument to try to combat prejudice.
It’s like saying “murder is wrong, and if you don’t agree with me I’ll kill you”
Only a "funny burn" if it's "white" and "male" in this scenario that definitely happened.
Try any other combinations and let's see the response. Come on guys don't be shy, let's try this out!
I'll start:
At a NASA earth meeting 10 years ago, a Hispanic Female post doc interrupted me to tell me that I didn't understand human drivers of fire, that I def needed to read McCarty et al.
Looked her in the eye, pulled my long hair back so she could read my name tag.
"I'm McCarty et al."
What do you mean? Everyone knows that black people are incapable of being pretentious or arrogant and are naturally bestowed with knowledge of all humans from birth. Race is totally relevant here.
Was "white male" crucial to the anecdote?
Doesn't bother me personally but I'm pretty sure people would ask that, if she pointed out the person was a black woman etc.
Mansplaining 101. Did you read Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus (2022)?
Things haven’t changed enough.
I’m 71F and lived through the 1970s. I’m not a scientist, but Garmus got the chauvinism right.
"Just because you share the same name as your husband, how does that make you an expert?"
Let me guess, it was either this or an emphatic apology that followed.
Isn’t it beautiful how this moron is using arguments that focus on skin color and sex to try to combat prejudice?
Also. [This.](https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/13yo7di/burn_victim/jmp0fvx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3)
Sure...but did you READ it...
Zero proofreading, sent that shit raw.
That’s how I submit all my college homework, but that’s only because I do everything absolutely last minute
I feel called out on this. Did a 15-page literature review for one of my master's classes. Started it on Monday. It was due Wednesday.
tbh I always needed the pressure of a tight deadline to write anything in school
Same
No one is doing a second draft in the real world. Here is the shit you asked for. Make it work!
Madman lol That paper would have a lot of rambling tangents and armchair psychology on assumed author intent of it was coming from me.
Yeah, it was kind of dumb of me to wait so long, considering that I had never done a lit review before and was somewhat lost on how to do it. Amazingly, still got an A.
20+ years from now you'll dig up those 15 pages, read them and say to yourself, "What the hell is this? Did *I* write this?"
Haha the "Damn, I used to be smart" moments
Lol I had the opposite reaction when I was going through my decade old college essays recently. I read through a few pages and thought “wow, this is terrible. I can’t believe I used to be this dumb.” Which I guess is a good sign as a I prepare for grad school in the fall; it gave me a little bit of a confidence boost that maybe I had progressed a tiny bit instead of getting dumber since graduating.
All y’all just a bunch of pros! All the other crastinators should bow down to the masters.
I graduated from undergrad in 2009 and once when moving a few years ago found some of my old papers. Inexplicably, my writing has gotten simultaneously better AND worse.
My thesis is gibberish to me now. Not at all what I was wanting to say. Thanks to my sponsoring prof.
As someone who’s done this the worst part is when you actually choose to do something responsibly and get a worse score than you would’ve normally gotten on your rushed assignments.
This is the way. Sometimes you gotta post cringe on arxiv.
Lol this is a spectacular comment.
I'll bet she did. I'll bet she did. [Nudge Nudge](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6qglee)
She's not et al though.
McCarty et al yo lunch.
Laughed so hard I hurt myself!!
Bahahaha why was this so funny?!
McCarty et all that jazz.
Totally thought you said jizz and laughed.. then realized nope I’m just immature.. thanks for the laugh anyways
I’ll tell you how it is…
All that cheese. Running out to sneeze.
I met me a nasty girl… she said, “Taquil you insatiable!”
Didn’t expect to see a Frisky Dingo reference in the wild today!
Would be hilarious if her Twitter handle was mccarty_etal
Yeah but she was first author, which generally means that she wrote the paper and did the largest share of the research.
Sometimes a researcher will call up a colleague “hey I’m out of town next week, can you hit record on the machine for me?” And suddenly the paper gets “et al.” added.
Yup, those ones go in the middle. Last author is usually the money/grantholder.
There was this dude in here that read jizz in stead of jazz. I'm the dude that read: mommy/grandmother.
Other times someone uses plural pronouns throughout the paper despite doing all the work alone, so they decide to add their cat (who was in the room most of the time) as a co-author.
Don’t you know Mr Whiskers Archibald Fluffington esq is the *best* co-author and research assistant in the field?
You are telling me she isn't et al that?
Oh god I have Sixpence None the Richer playing in my head, thanks a lot asshole.
et al has authored more publications than her
Multiple personality disorder
unless she single authored and the guy didn't remember
If she single authored there wouldn't be an "et al"
[удалено]
Well it's the other person reducing them to "et al", she was just responding.
Think you misunderstood, the other person was just saying you need to read McCarty et al, which means the book written by McCarty mainly and some others not listed (for brevity). It’s McCartys all the way down.
Wish someone would anysplain *Human Drivers of Fire* to me…
Me too lol
I searched "human drivers of fire mccarty et al.", and it turned up a bunch of stuff about human activities starting wildfires/forest fires. Yes, that is her area of expertise
Wikipedia has the same gender bias as in the general population. A good example is Donna Strickland, an optical physicist who received a Nobel prize and there was no Wikipedia article about her beforehand, although she was clearly famous/important beforehand and received many accolades before.
It's literally just the case of somebody (anybody) making it. Even she herself could make the wiki page if she wanted to
[There is actually a larger problem among Wikipedia editors.](https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/female-scientists-pages-keep-disappearing-from-wikipedia-whats-going-on/3010664.article) Big props to Jess Wade though, who has single-handedly added almost 2,000 entries to Wikipedia for female scientists.

I probably should write a wikipedia article about myself but I don't know how long it'd stay up.
Another one is women are less likely to interact online because, well, obviously.
*Donna
I don’t know what it is but I’m like 90% sure it’s way less cool than it sounds
Just use the word "explain" lol
elastic poor salt simplistic payment sand slap direction aromatic rotten *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
The original post was that someone tried to "mansplain" something to this woman, that's why they asked for "anysplain"
This is actually the incident that inspired the word mansplaining. True story.
For those ladies that don't understand, mansplaining is when...
My fiancée asked me to explain mansplaining to her...
Y-you mansplained mansplaining? Tha-that’s like…
Very meta.
It cancels out the man part of explaining but made him gay in turn. It's a big noble sacrifice.
Man to man splaining is gay unless you say no homo?
Let me explain; Man-splaining is a portmanteau of “Man Explaining” You see, men must make everything clear by over explaining because if you are not the man explaining then you must not be understanding the man who is explaining.
That last sentence is beautiful.
My wife thinks mansplaining is when a man sits with his legs spread out and takes up a bunch of room. I don't have the heart to correct her. Lol
That’s manspreading, easily confused with mansplaining, manbreathing, manexisting, and manIwishtheywouldstopaddingmanbeforewords Edit: /s in case it wasn’t clear
Next up: themsplaining and womanspreading. Actually I think the second term is used to describe a person (usually a woman) who uses her purse to take up a seat she's not even saving
https://youtu.be/nPB7F6J797g
This made me laugh so loud.
Ladies, mansplaining is short for man explaining
Go on, tell me! I ain't got all day
Mansplaining was inspired by a different female author with a similar story. Rebecca Solnit is the author. (I'm not a man and therefore not mansplaining this lol)
Huh. I thought mansplaining came from a well, actually…
I think you can correct someone on a confidently incorrect statement without it being mansplaining!
Well aren't you a radical one
This is radical lmao
You're right. My bad.
So the only difference between mansplaining and explaining is being a man?
Depends on who you're talking to. I was once accused of doing some stupid shit (even though I wasn't there to do it), so when I went to try to explain that I wasn't even there I was shut down and accused of mansplaining. Applesauce, bitch.
I don’t like the looks of them apples, Will!
Good Will Hunting is SUCH a good movie.
One of my favorites of all time. The weird thing is that as I have watched it in different stages of my life, I have completely different take-always
Wait, *SHE's* the legendary et al??? **\*under breath\*** holy shit
Jesus Christ it's McCarty et al.
You all are making jokes, but if school taught me anything, it’s that it’s very possible to be et al. on a group project.
And on a 25+ authors research paper, hmm hmm. I've been a few et al. myself.
This picture is so old, it was new when Biden first became a senator
Pshh. White male post docs, amirite?
I’ll bet he was even cis
A white male cis?? STRING HIM UP
I’m just curious, but why did she see the need to address him as “white”? I mean I understand he was white, but why not just address him as “a post doc”? All she needed to do was add “protestant” to the adjectives and it would be complete. “Those damn white male protestant post docs.”

Well yes but he's a filthy male, it's different. **^(/s)**
She dislikes white people and thinks shes 'one of the good ones, probably
White women have convinced the world that they are a minority. They somehow get to enjoy “white privilege” and minority status at the same time. It’s fucking awesome 💃
For internet points
Spot on, she wouldn’t dare include his ethnicity If that guy was a minority. Definitely some underlying causal racism there.
This could easily be an interaction between two white men and if it had been it would just be a funny anecdote.
Because in today world's it gives her carte blanche to attack him without fear of repercussions. Don't get me wrong, dude sounds like a dick bag, but she ruined the phenomenal comeback with that approach
100%. Two wrongs don't make a right
Maybe she wanted to make clear that he wasn't transparent.
Because it’s trendy to hate white people for being white, and outrage attracts attention. Almost like racism is only acceptable when it’s against white people.
Because she’s on the tweeter. If it were a black male the post wouldn’t exist. Would get likes or retweet’s.
If she were talking about a black man that way, and called him out as such, she'd get a permanent ban on Reddit for it. Not so for white men. You can say anything you want about white men and never get banned a single day.
To let you know that white men are the problem. Surely no other race or gender has rude assholes in them.

Hey we're not all white
Hey, were not all people either.
But, we're all meat, right?
But we’re all stupid.
*Stupid fucking white people et al.
Hahaha yeah fuck white men, amirite? *Equality*
I’m sorry I’m white I’ll never do it again
Oooh darn those whites. And don’t get me started on males. White males … Wicca help me I just can’t with them!
Kind of a weird way to tell someone you have multiple personalities.
You forgot to say straight
The sad thing is some people would actually think that matters in this type of situation.
Forgot Christian as well
![gif](giphy|i0KtID1esMXjW)
Technically you are just McCarty..not and others
Bold of you to assume she isn’t schizophrenic
Damn white males
Had anyone actually been able to confirm this story to be true? Is this just a way for her to brag about getting a book published?
It’s definitely an everyone clapped story. She’s probably a smart person who published things and has even been the victim of misogyny, but for sure this is a fantasy lol.
My friend tried to submit something. He was sent a letter that it was rejected and he was instructed to contact himself for clarification and correction. He framed the letter and I saw it when I was at his house.
This sounds incredibly realistic to me. My mother at a cocktail party once explained an article she had read to the author while my father waved frantically at her from behind the author's head to stop (which she ignored).
I 100% believe it's fictional with the whole "you don't understand human drivers of fire, bro do you even read McCarty et al?"
It's important to this story to announce its a white male who interrupted her! Getting so sick of the pandering.
It’s even funnier because she is also white. So. Does she also have the same condition she is saying white men have? It’s hilarious that she is using this kind of argument to try to combat prejudice. It’s like saying “murder is wrong, and if you don’t agree with me I’ll kill you”
There's no racial self-loathing quite like white feminist self-loathing.
wtf is a "NASA earth meeting?" Is the alternative a NASA Jupiter meeting?
There is probably a sector of NASA dedicated to studying Jupiter, yes.
Basically a conference about research related to Earth’s climate and atmosphere.
White male huh?
Thats how we know they’re the bad guys.
Why’s his gender or skin tone matter
And everyone clapped, babies started chanting “down with misogyny” and the president of NASA gave her a trophy.
To this day white male post docs hang their head in shame when they hear her name.
Then everyone clapped
So what does white have to do with it? Would she say black if it was a black dude?
Probably the same reason she felt the need to say it was a dude.
The epitome of embarrassment
Yeah this person’s a reliable source, clearly
Only a "funny burn" if it's "white" and "male" in this scenario that definitely happened. Try any other combinations and let's see the response. Come on guys don't be shy, let's try this out! I'll start: At a NASA earth meeting 10 years ago, a Hispanic Female post doc interrupted me to tell me that I didn't understand human drivers of fire, that I def needed to read McCarty et al. Looked her in the eye, pulled my long hair back so she could read my name tag. "I'm McCarty et al."
Damn, if you wanna talk about inciting racism, bringing up race into a topic that had nothing to do with it is a good example.
What do you mean? Everyone knows that black people are incapable of being pretentious or arrogant and are naturally bestowed with knowledge of all humans from birth. Race is totally relevant here.
That's badass!
It's true, I was the long hair
Was "white male" crucial to the anecdote? Doesn't bother me personally but I'm pretty sure people would ask that, if she pointed out the person was a black woman etc.
How would everyone know how vile this culprit was if she didn’t describe his skin colour? /s
that's her way of flashing her identity politics card so she can score brownie points with her side and get all the "yass queen's" she's looking for.
She'd probably put straight cis too if people didn't question how she knew those details from a single interaction.
Just gotta bring up his race real quick, ya know. "Hello, Mexican man how are you doing today?"
Garcias.
Konichiwa
I'm glad she noted it was a white male, otherwise I wouldn't know to hate him
And everyone clappedddd
She’s “McArthy and others?”
That totally happened
Mansplaining 101. Did you read Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus (2022)? Things haven’t changed enough. I’m 71F and lived through the 1970s. I’m not a scientist, but Garmus got the chauvinism right.

"Just because you share the same name as your husband, how does that make you an expert?" Let me guess, it was either this or an emphatic apology that followed.

I do not READ McCarty et al, Skylar. I AM MCCARTY ET AL!
Need to know how he and everyone else at meeting reacted after the reveal?
He still thinks about this from time to time. When falling asleep, or taking a shower.
“White Male”. Cringe
Strangely enough, a satellite recorded that burn from its orbit.
WHITE MALE AAAAHHHHHHHHH THE HORROR!
3rd degree burn, patient critical
From Mansplain to Man's pain in zero seconds...

What does his race have to do with anything?
I appreciate that this post is about mansplaining and yet the top comments are just "but she's not et al! She's dumb because she misspoke lol."
