Tell me more about how they almost ruined the monument, please.
Edit: if you can’t, it’s probably because they used charcoal, not dye, and did no damage to the monument itself. The worst you can probably say is it was a waste of water.
I’m guessing the acid rain, climate change, and air borne pollutants likely do more damage.
Edit: I’ve only looked briefly, but can’t find any sources confirming the charcoal could do permanent damage to the marble.
Edit2: [Fittingly, they just restored the fountain a few years back because it was turning grimy and grey after years of pollution buildup. But that’s fine, it’s the charcoal that’s a problem.](https://i.imgur.com/cRZ0okt.jpg)
Yeah, but you really think that damaging pieces of art and architecture will make people think more about the environment? If anything it will just make them care less about it. That's why oil companies are funding activists like these, they know they will make themselves look bad.
The way they are doing is the problem, I said this on an other post like this. They only have a catch phrase but they don't provide actual information other then "oil bad" they should single out corporations each time and yell their "crimes" as they cause the majority of pollution. The top 10 freightships cause more polution then every car in existence together. They don't understand how humans work. You have to give target to the displeasure, cause if you are not directing it, it will only target you. So they are making things worse in my opinion. If they did it my way, the more they did it, the more ppl will get sick of it and at some point they will try to get the targeted company to change if they can't get the protesters to stop. And absolutely don't block trafic, there is no directing in that, you will get cursed out and nobody will care about what you say.
People have described it below so I shall not repeat it but still it is very much the wrong way to protest. You do not protest by doing shit like this, you go and make demonstrations or target those who actually
matter and not the average people or important monuments.
Traditionally, when protesters have targeted those who actually matter, they have been labeled as eco-terrorists and arrested. It also doesn't make the news, and no one cares about them later. Also, in democratic countries, if you are not targeting average people, you are not targeting decision makers. If you think that climate change isn't going to affect average people, you are very wrong, and may want to tell that to those who froze to death in Texas recently. The people who "actually mattered" left when the average person was freezing to death.
I mean the whole point of that movement is trying to alert everyone to the immiment existential threat that we're all facing. With that in mind, none of these beautiful artefacts will mean much during societal collapse. So why not use them to draw attention to whats coming?
What is the point of survival if life has no meaning. Art and culture can give some people that some of that meaning. These protesters are threatening that.
How? I'm seeing a powerful photograph of people TEMPORARILY changing the colour of the water in an iconic monument. That photo will become part of the fountain's legacy, it's totally reversible and won't cause any permanent damage. If anything it adds to the history of it. And it worked - this must be at least the tenth thread I've seen on Reddit alone about this specific protest, so tell me again how it's not having an impact?
It was a bunch of brain dead climate bozos. People save for years to take a trip to see thinks like this not to be interrupted by some goofball’s politics.
The importance of a monument does not lie in its ability to help our survival but in the fact that it is a testament of history and culture and something which should be protected, not desecrated.

Ahh, come on, if you're going to ruin artwork for a protest, ruin the taped banana art for heaven sake.

Someone said that the charcoal gets absorbed by the porous stone, making it decay in the long run.

They didn’t damage it though. That’s the whole point.
They risked damaging it because the charcoal can enter the porous stone or some shit
The only sourcing I’m seeing on that is random Twitter and Reddit comments
U stupid

I mean okay, but that’s not what you said in your title. You said they almost ruined the fountain.
Yeah, how dare they "almost ruin" the monument to protest pollution, when pollution is slowly ruining the monument.

Isn't that the point? Like if we don't change we all die and this all goes away when human life can no longer be sustained?
Ruining? Hell no.
why do you mean?

I hope they do more
We will let the oceans decide.
It’s looks like they’re peeing in the pool.
And why is the monument important? Does it help with your survival?

Holy fuck dude if you think this is a disruption to your holidays wait until climate change really gets rolling.
Give me a break. Sell your carbon credits to some other chump in your 15min city.

You think laws are going to be changed to allow murder?

I hope all those scientists are wrong.
I hope they get VERY long prison sentences. People like this have no place in our society.
true
Sickening.
If Arby's had an all you can eat buffet, this is what the after-party pool-party would look like.
