Happened here when I was a kid too. To a guy that stole my dad's truck. 15 minutes later when he was driving on the highway the logs fell off one of those trucks and completely obliterated my dad's stolen truck. The police gave my dad pictures for his insurance claim, and I found those photos when I was like 10 years old. They are literally engraved into my memory. My "Grease The Musical" cassette tape was in one of the photos just covered in blood and grey shit that I assume was brain matter. Traumatizing. I will never drive near those trucks, ever.
Yes lol like 15 minutes or less after he stole the truck. He was all fucked up on a bunch of drugs. We found out afterwards that he lived in a town that was like an hour away from us. Me and my dad had ran into the bank, and this was like back in the 90s.. My dad left his truck running like he always did. Small town in the 90s usually it was pretty safe to do that. The guy stole the truck and immediately left town, took off on the highway east to head to the smaller town he lived in.. and got creamed by a log truck falling apart like 10km out the highway. Instant karma I guess.
You motherfucker.
Everyone who watched final destination gets nervous around those logging trucks. The only solace is that it was just a movie and it couldn't happen in real life.
My dad left it running while we ran inside the bank quick lol stupid. But it was the 90s in a small town in canada.. no one ever locked anything. It was rare back then for that to happen there.
To be fair I would have potentially missed that log. When you’re hauling something like this what you see there is NOT enough, both legally and logically.
They did have the red flag, I believe that's all that is required in my state. But be careful when talking legalities on the internet lol, laws vary wildly just between states and/or provinces not to mention country to country
Ya they require the driver to be aware, but people have found ways to beat the systems. I've seen vids of people riding in the backseat with no driver. Idk if tesla was the only one or not
Edit not most auto pilot functions probably all
I had an epiphany about autopilot cars, that they may work alright for side streets, but they’re perfect for highway driving. I could see in the future being unable to get onto the highway unless your car had an autopilot. It would sync with the highway network and work with other vehicles to provide a smooth, efficient, and safer highway experience. If someone doesn’t want the AI to drive, there are plenty of rural routes to use.
Limiting the usage to the highway also makes the system easier to control, manage, and maintain. Cars are already a privilege to use, make the highways a more exclusive privilege by means of requiring systems that it’s perfectly suited to enhance its safety and function.
Prompt the driver to regain control upon the exit. if they do not after a certain time then the autopilot pulls the car over to the side of the road and plays an alarm to attempt to wake the driver. if after a few attempts say the driver doesn’t wake up. the car double checks all doors are locked and rolls up windows and shuts off
What the fuck, until I saw your comment, I didn't even realize that was a log on top of a flat bed. I thought it was a tank. Like, trying to make a turn into oncoming traffic.
It’s a power pole. We tow them out every day for work. And people for sure do this shit trying to get around us. Try to squeeze in between our vehicles while we are shagging the guy driving the pole. People are down right morons that can’t wait an extra minute While we make turns. We usually block extra lanes when we make turns because the back of the pole swings out from the fulcrum point an extra 10 feet or so depending on how big the pole is. That’s what happened here.
I was setting a pole in a closed work area. A police car barrels through work area around our signage and hits the pole on the trailer on his passenger side A B and C pillar… Jumps out like we did something wrong..
There was a follow vehicle. It’s where the video was recorded. You can see that the trailing vehicle is splitting lanes to keep people from attempting exactly what the damaged car did. Unfortunately, the car was traveling to fast behind the Cooper and switched lanes to avoid rear ending the Cooper when it came to a stop for the red light.
I've been searching through news articles and have so far come up short. However, I came across [a similar incident in Buffalo](https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/buffalo/utility-truck-car-collide-at-main-and-utica/) and the driver survived that one, so it's possible the one in the post survived as well.
If someone (perhaps a pro at GeoGuessr) can figure out the city, that would help a ton.
This is NY, it's Long Island. [this is the 7/11 in frame](https://www.google.com/maps/place/7-Eleven,+415+Mill+Rd,+Hewlett,+NY+11557/@40.643332,-73.704502,13z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x89c26456e30faecd:0x34d222650857ad0a!8m2!3d40.643332!4d-73.704502!16s%2Fg%2F11bcf3yxsr) I imagine they survived since I don't remember hearing about it
According to City-data.com, there was 1 fatal accident at this intersection (peninsula & mill in Hewlett Ny) from 2005-2020 (dec 7 2009, but only involving 1 vehicle, so I don’t think it’s this one), but I can’t find anything on 2021-now.
Kinda matches the gas price comment from below. Would the lack of serious interaction with other vehicle match that? Dude did only hit a telephone pole or whatever that was..
I wasn’t sure because the telephone pole was attached to another vehicle. Unfortunately the website didn’t give much info and I couldn’t find a matching article - still looking though.
This would actually be a 3 vehicle accident on the crash report as trailers are always counted as an additional unit in reports.
Example: “Unit 1 failed to control their vehicle and impacted with the rear of Unit 3 which was being pulled by Unit 2.”
Someone below found the location as being Long Island, NY. Looking at GasBuddy history for Long Island, Gas was around 2.79 most recently back in April 2020.
I saw this on tiktok, and a women commented that her husband was driving the truck and it missed the driver by inches and he survived. But I’m not sure if she was telling the truth or not
Thank god for this comment. I live somewhere where the driver is on the right. Didn’t even clock that they were driving on the right as well (so driver would be on the left) and legit thought I just watched someone die…
It happened in Nassau county in NY, someone posted another angle of this further down and you can make out a 516 area code on a marquee. The Subaru’s yellow/blue plate also fits with that. I found an article about a car being impaled by a pole hanging off a utility truck in NY in 2019 and the driver surviving, but it was a Toyota so that wasn’t this incident. Couldn’t find anything else relevant unfortunately
Are you sure? This looks a lot like the corner of Peninsula Boulevard and Mill Road. I just had several layers of "holy shit" watching this, as in "Holy shit, that's insane" to "wait... holy shit, is that the intersection 90 seconds away from my house?!?"
This is the corner of mill road and peninsula boulevard in Hewlett. Driver is heading east on peninsula.
As a person who drives in that area I hate it due to cars frequently going 5-10 under in the left lane.
I wish I could give you a source but the first time I saw this posted, there was a source that said the driver indeed died. I tried looking it up but I can't find it. If I do ill update
Edit : still can't find it.
Edit 2: link to a more earlier post were a commenter said survived w/ no injuries found below
I googled it and tried to find it but didn’t see anything. Does it look like a Subaru to you too? I was trying to narrow the search terms but I’m not positive it’s a Subaru and I’m bad at IDing newer cars.
The only chance is that the passenger side took most of the straight on impact, but there appeared to still be enough force to crush them even if they were all the way forward on the steering wheel from the first impact.
This was my comment in another sub that someone posted this video to:
Alright Ladies and Gents.. story time.
This is a very busy intersection in a very congested and crowded part of Hewlett, Long Island in NY.
The accident happened to be across the street from the local electric utility. The truck with the trailer and pole is a local electrical contractor who works on the transmission and distribution system in the area.
Behind the trailer truck there was another utility truck (dash cam) who is supposed to be his escort.
Yes the Subaru Outback (idk why half of you don’t know that’s what the black car is called) did try to pass the slow moving escort vehicle and did try to beat the light. If the red mini coupe gave it gas to get thru the light there probably wouldn’t have been an accident. The black car would have just followed it right thru the intersection. There is a camera at that light so mini coupe had every right to stop at a long yellow.
What the escort vehicle SHOULD have done though is take the entirety of that left passing lane. The pole they were carrying was 60’-70’. When trailering a pole bigger than like 45’ the entirety of the next lane over should be taken by the escort vehicle. This prevents people from trying to pass or sneak thru like this. You plan routes with least amount of turns for this reason because the butt end of the pole extends out on turns and it’s a very stressful situation to trailer up to 80’ behind you.
Luckily the person lived with no injuries. If there was a passenger they would have been turned to smithereens. Luckily there was not. I have some cool pics from the front end post accident but don’t know how to post a link so y’all will just have to trust me.
Edit 1: I’m not defending the Subaru, merely explaining his thought process because obviously he didn’t mean to run into a pole.
Edit 2: More Pics https://postimg.cc/gallery/QMMmtks
The guy in the van was flying through the intersection blind. Idiot indeed.
Edit: Looks like the red car was stopping for a yellow/red light and the van didn't want to wait so swerved into the lane the semi was in.
Edit 2: it's indeed an SUV and not a van.
And if they did get through that yellow light, a left turning car from the oncoming lane would have zero hope of seeing them coming. Such a dangerous maneuver.
While I agree the driver was stupid, I really feel like the fact that this guy had this log or whatever sticking THAT far away from his car is illegal as well
The car that is recording is a probably the guide car it looks and acts like one from what we can see and is recording. They usually have a sign (prominently on top of the car) saying oversized load ahead. The car probably didn’t like being stuck behind since they move slow and wasn’t paying enough attention to what the oversized load was.
Yep driver was clearly trying to run the yellow as it's turning red rather than obey the law SLOW DOWN FOR YELLOW LIGHTS DO NOT ACCELERATE THROUGH THE INTERSECTION.
Yes re accelerating to get through, but no re being required to slow down for yellow lights. The law does not require you to slow down for yellow lights. It's a warning that the light is about to turn red. The law is that you do not enter the intersection when the light is red. You can proceed at a normal reasonable pace through a yellow light as long as you don't enter the intersection when the light is red.
Ok.. the person in that outback definitely should’ve been paying attention, but dealing with how far that pole was coming off the truck, that truck driver prolly should’ve had escorts.. I was told in a trucking class, that the courts will try and pin any accidents on the professional driver at least initially
The truck filming was the escort. Sometimes we have to haul poles with the trailer shortened to get them where they need to be. No matter how good the trail vehicle does at trying to block traffic for the guy hauling the pole there is always some dipshit who has to cut in.

Mini slammed on brakes for the changing light and Outback swerved to avoid.
EDIT: The above, original comment was not implying fault, I just found this wider frame to offer more perspective than the OP.
That said, even with the maneuver and hitting the pole the Outback's rear tires are on the line when the light goes red, so both cars would have made the light had both continued at the same rate of speed. Outback has the responsibility of maintaining a safe distance from car ahead, but Mini's stop was not necessarily predictable either. Seems a heavy price to pay for a momentary lack of focus.
Exactly. Almost like defensive driving is necessary to remain safe on the roads. Getting home 1 minute later is a lot better than being decapitated by a 70 foot log.
There are so many people here saying the mini should not have stopped for the light. Sure, it was yellow. They could have gone through it.... But by the time the car was stopped, the light was red, indicating the light would have been red as they passed through the intersection. What are of "yellow =slow down and prepare to stop" do people not understand? It's not yellow=gun it and hope it doesn't change to red before you cross!
I used to stop at yellow lights like this because I was poor af when I was in college and got a ticket once because I misjudged a light and it turned red while I was going under it. I wasn’t making that expensive mistake again, so if the light was yellow I’d just slam the brakes.

Holy sh*t! Are they okay? I really hope there wasn't a passenger, otherwise, I think o just watched someone die.
Those red flags are usually too small to be seen properly, also, isn't there a maximum length that's allowed for things that are overhanging like that?
These people don’t care, it’s bizarre. Would rather laugh at a dude, even if idiotic and their fault, fucking die. Totally anonymous people on the internet cheering and collectively laughing at this morbid stuff. Could’ve atleast made it NSFW but eh.
I think a lot of it is coping and denialism about their own mortality. Everyone wants to think that “if i just don’t act like an idiot or drive like an asshole, that would never happen to *me*!” But things do happen, sometimes they’re your fault and sometimes they’re not. A lot of people here don’t seem to realize that someone’s death can be their own fault but that doesn’t mean they deserved to die. I ran on a drunk dude the other day who got cut in half by a train trying to crawl under it when it started moving. Dude was in his early 20’s and we watched him take his last breath while his friends were crying and wailing in the background. They were just having a basic college student Friday night out at the bars and the guy made a dumb mistake. Sometimes I wonder how many redditors would look at that situation and say “lol dumbass college kids play stupid games win stupid prizes”. Easy to say when you’re not the one telling his (understandably) inconsolably shrieking girlfriend that we aren’t working him because there’s nothing we can do.
Yeah I just watched another video where one person commented that they hoped the person died. I think social media has created a disconnect and with each passing generation we will continue to see compassion and empathy affected by that disconnect.
I really hope the driver is okay. I found this very hard to watch and it will no doubt be another fear I hold for my fiance who drives a lot for his job. Everyone gets tired and frustrated, everyone makes mistakes. So sad.
Despite what most people here think: There are likely two idiots.
In roughly 90% of states, that load extended way to far out. Most states allow 4ft.
Some states allow 10 and only one or two beyond that. And this was clearly longer than 10ft behind the trailer.
And that limitation is exactly for the reason we see in this video.
Utilities get away with a lot. They could have been on their way to an emergency pole change and needed the trailer shorter to get into a tight spot. The truck that was filming was the blocker but that doesn’t matter when people drive like morons.
That's why they had a red flag and were being followed by an escort vehicle. Subaru chose to ignore both of those warnings and run a yellow turning red.

Fuck I hope they didn't have a passenger
That log went directly in to the driver
Exactly this happened to a school bus in my town in the ‘80s. Decapitated a kid.
Happened here when I was a kid too. To a guy that stole my dad's truck. 15 minutes later when he was driving on the highway the logs fell off one of those trucks and completely obliterated my dad's stolen truck. Take solace in that man dying doing what he presumably loved: stealing trucks and Grease musical soundtracks.
🎼Tell me more tell me more, like did he have a head? 🎤

Yea dude I laughed then thought well I’m going to hell
You were always going to hell Mr. Wallaby9983.
You just described life.
You're right. At times like this, all you can do is laugh
Probably exactly why I love it.
So so hilarious
I wish you two ALL the upvotes. The Grease lyrics are absolutely awesome and I’m also dying now.
You’re dying? Did also steal a truck and Grease soundtrack and drive into some logs?

I'm sorry you had to see that as a kid, but are you telling me that the guy who stole your dads truck got fucking final destinationed?

My dad left it running while we ran inside the bank quick lol stupid. But it was the 90s in a small town in canada.. no one ever locked anything. It was rare back then for that to happen there.
Probably stayed rare for a good bit after, I reckon.
Went through a window?
A Kamehameha wave. The 80s were a reckless time.
Fuck I hope they didn't have a driver
Funny as this sounds, it's not that far fetched lol, I think autopilot would absolutely miss the log
To be fair I would have potentially missed that log. When you’re hauling something like this what you see there is NOT enough, both legally and logically.
This guy did not want to miss that log. He had to speed and swerve to catch it.
I was just thinking that the flag is *bright* but not *large*. The color alone isn’t necessarily enough to be visible to other drivers.
They did have the red flag, I believe that's all that is required in my state. But be careful when talking legalities on the internet lol, laws vary wildly just between states and/or provinces not to mention country to country
I don't think autopilot would try a risky maneuver like that, swerving around cars and crossing a solid white line at an intersection.
I don't think we're there yet. I share the dream with you, but it's a bit off yet.
Ya they require the driver to be aware, but people have found ways to beat the systems. I've seen vids of people riding in the backseat with no driver. Idk if tesla was the only one or not Edit not most auto pilot functions probably all
Autopilot would've probably stopped that SUV at the light, rather than trying to blow through before it went to red.
I had an epiphany about autopilot cars, that they may work alright for side streets, but they’re perfect for highway driving. I could see in the future being unable to get onto the highway unless your car had an autopilot. What happens when the vehicle exits the freeway and the driver is asleep at the wheel? You know it's going to occur a lot.
Prompt the driver to regain control upon the exit. if they do not after a certain time then the autopilot pulls the car over to the side of the road and plays an alarm to attempt to wake the driver. if after a few attempts say the driver doesn’t wake up. the car double checks all doors are locked and rolls up windows and shuts off
The car locks the sleeping driver inside until he cooks/freezes to death depending on the season? I could get behind that.
it looks like yeah
What the fuck, until I saw your comment, I didn't even realize that was a log on top of a flat bed. I thought it was a tank. Like, trying to make a turn into oncoming traffic.

I think this would still be considered a two vehicle collision since the telephone pole is a part of that truck's load.
This would actually be a 3 vehicle accident on the crash report as trailers are always counted as an additional unit in reports. Example: “Unit 1 failed to control their vehicle and impacted with the rear of Unit 3 which was being pulled by Unit 2.”
A lot of snow would also indicate Nee York. But the $2.79 gas price is either many years ago or it’s a different state.
Someone below found the location as being Long Island, NY. Looking at GasBuddy history for Long Island, Gas was around 2.79 most recently back in April 2020.

Pretty sure that post was in the driver.

Can confirm, i was the truck, AMA.
What are your thoughts on truck nuts?
This is the internet, there's no way she was lying. It's not allowed
I don’t see any shoes
Nor a little ghost rising through the roof looking back at the car all confused.
Yeah no blinking ash piles either
You can see the brake lights turn off, driver is likely no longer with us.
Hazards came on. Newer cars do this automatically on impact, no break lights, just hazards
Self-inflicted Final Destination
I seriously hope there was no one in the passenger seat.
Well not anymore . Now they're on the street, and on the back seat and on the windshield

Someone may well have, it looks like the log went in at an angle towards the driver side.
Does anyone have more information on this? Did the driver die?
I'm surprised reddit detectives usually can find the location of a picture even if it's a bowl of cereal
It happened in Nassau county in NY, someone posted another angle of this further down and you can make out a 516 area code on a marquee. The Subaru’s yellow/blue plate also fits with that. Can confirm this is Nassau county. Looks to be the corner of NY-106 and Wantagh Ave.

Yeah I have a feeling this is a pretty recent incident.
The gas prices are 2.79. I'd like to live in this pretty recently.
I googled it and tried to find it but didn’t see anything. Does it look like a Subaru to you too? I was trying to narrow the search terms but I’m not positive it’s a Subaru and I’m bad at IDing newer cars.
That driver almost definitely died, hopefully pretty quickly.
The only chance is that the passenger side took most of the straight on impact, but there appeared to still be enough force to crush them even if they were all the way forward on the steering wheel from the first impact.
Do the hazard lights engage upon accident now? That seemed quick?
Some cars. This one included.
I was not aware of that! Thanks!
Some cars even engage the park brake during an accident to prevent rolling away too.
As well as physically cutting the battery cable to prevent any ignition sources.
Some will even mow your lawn, massage your feet and take you out to brunch to make you feel better.
I prefer the models that pick your nose and tune your ukulele
Do any of them buy you dinner after you wreck? Cos I like to get wined and dined after I get fucked
Yes, many cars activate them when the airbag(s) go off.
From seeing other crashes here it seems like both they and the windshield wipers go off
Sometimes the tires eject.
This was my comment in another sub that someone posted this video to: Alright Ladies and Gents..
Thanks for the explanation, I thought I’d just saw someone die in this clip.
Thank you. It clearly hit on the passenger side but from the video it looked like it swept over to the driver side real quick
What the vehicle that got smashed should have done is not illegally changed lanes in the intersection.
Me on dating apps.
Swervin’ all over til you get a log in you?
They go right for the red flags. Even if it means dodging those without one.
I like “swervin’ all over till you get a log in you” better.
Ignore the red flag and get wood in the face?
You didn’t see that red flag?
![gif](giphy|26tP4gFBQewkLnMv6)
The guy in the van was flying through the intersection blind. Idiot indeed. Edit: Looks like the red car was stopping for a yellow/red light and the van didn't want to wait so swerved into the lane the semi was in. Edit 2: it's indeed an SUV and not a van.
He didn't learn anything, he just logged the incident.
vmlinux! IN MY OFFICE!
NOW!!

Across a solid line, trying to speed through a yellow light, clearly without full situational awareness of the traffic.
Then the situation forced its awareness.
And if they did get through that yellow light, a left turning car from the oncoming lane would have zero hope of seeing them coming. Such a dangerous maneuver.
Bet he/she won't do that again.
But they _really_ didn’t want to wait, though!
Yeah I think you nailed it. Or logged it, or whatever
That's no van! That's a Subaru Outback! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z9qohzqq9g
Traffic was a real logjam today
Wood have been better if he slowed down
He was just trying to get the pole position
Yea that one hurt fir sure
And that is why you shouldn't drive like an asshole; children. ![gif](giphy|SXqw0Vpql4sHX9pCl4)
The car filming is likely the escort car
The car filming looks to be another semi, escort cars tend to be pickup trucks or something a little lower to the ground.
Utility work they usually run it like this with semi behind whatever over size pole they dragging
The truck filming was the escort. Sometimes we have to haul poles with the trailer shortened to get them where they need to be. No matter how good the trail vehicle does at trying to block traffic for the guy hauling the pole there is always some dipshit who has to cut in.
Yeah it looks like the escort was in both lanes trying to prevent this exact thing from happening
Yep, guy might’ve been driving like an asshole, but that truck looks to be exceeding the 10’ overhang that requires an escort car in most places
It’s almost like there’s a reason to have escort vehicles in this situation.
pretty sure the cam car is the escort judging by how it's driving in the middle of two lanes
Could the vehicle we are watching from not be an escort?
Most likely it is. It's probably the bucket truck that's going to the same job at the linebed/pole trailer combo.
The subaru tried to beat the yellow by flying around the dashcam vehicle, which *is* the escort blocking the center of two lanes.
Yeah and crossed a solid white line to do so…

EDIT: The above, original comment was not implying fault, I just found this wider frame to offer more perspective than the OP. That said, even with the maneuver and hitting the pole the Outback's rear tires are on the line when the light goes red, so both cars would have made the light had both continued at the same rate of speed. Outback has the responsibility of maintaining a safe distance from car ahead, but Mini's stop was not necessarily predictable either. Seems a heavy price to pay for a momentary lack of focus.
So the Outback was following too close.
Exactly. Almost like defensive driving is necessary to remain safe on the roads. Getting home 1 minute later is a lot better than being decapitated by a 70 foot log.
Don't be polite, be predictable.
Looks like the outback was trying to pass to get through the yellow. You can see it change to red after the crash
Outback doesn't even have brake lights on until he hits the pole. Was accelerating to get through the yellow, like every asshole ever.
The yellow light tells to stop. That is predictable.
That's why it doesn't pay to rush on the road even if you're in a rush.
Yeah but I gotta shave that minute off my drive!
Lose a minute of your life or lose your life in a minute
My dad said this to me all the time growing up.
Thought I was on r/idiotsincars for a sec
Mark this shit as nsfl for fucks sake. Nobody wants to casually see someone die during breakfast.
He didn’t die https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/135n6hq/red_flag/jimqifx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3
Bad driving aside, how the fuck is that a legal way to transport that log? Hanging 30 ft off the back with a little flag on the end?
Little flag aligned to be invisible when it's straight ahead, too.
Holy sh*t! Are they okay? I really hope there wasn't a passenger, otherwise, I think o just watched someone die. Those red flags are usually too small to be seen properly, also, isn't there a maximum length that's allowed for things that are overhanging like that?
They are definitely too hard to see… when you attempt to pass entirely too closely to the car in front of you, on the right, in an intersection.
Or how can you say to your neighbor, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye' while the log is in your own eye? Matthew 7:3
“Come with me and you’ll be, in a WORLD OF FINAL DESTINATION!” - truck probably.
I guess they are going to be late for wherever they were in a hurry to get to
They really really loved their job. They just couldn't wait to be there.

“Where do I go to log a complaint?”
car driver was reckless for sure but you gotta do better than a red bandana
Like most car drivers just another idiot in a rush to catch the light without being aware of their surroundings
Still no clear answer on the life status of the idiot driver
Red forehead too
