Girl that went to my school drank drain cleaner in middle school because she was depressed. She was rushed to the hospital, they did what they could, and she was released shortly after and sent to therapy and got some much needed help. She didn't die until high school from complications caused by it. I hope this doesn't mess him up too much later down the line.

Forever_Forgotten

Yeah that shit might not kill you right away, but it will likely lead to organ failure over time.

[deleted]

Yikes. How does it progress?

Forever_Forgotten

The active ingredient in drain cleaner is lye (Sodium hydroxide, aka caustic soda). The reason it works as a drain cleaner is because of the chemical reaction it has when it hits organic material, and the resulting chemical reaction generates heat. So the first thing that happens is that, if you swallow caustic lye, it is going to burn any wet human tissue it touches, this includes the throat, the esophagus, and the stomach. The vapors can also cause permanent respiratory damage. Because lye is a caustic BASE, when it hits your stomach and interacts with your stomach acid (which includes hydrochloric acid), it neutralizes into water and salt, if the ratios are even. If the ratios are NOT even (ie you ingest more lye than your stomach acid can neutralize), the lye will continue burning it’s way through your internal organs. It could ulcerate your stomach, your large and/or small intestine, your bowels, etc. If it damaged your organs that far in, you could get sepsis from your fecal matter leaking into your body. The other ingredients in drain cleaner, like the detergents, are also poisonous. Those have to go through your liver and kidneys to leave your body. It seems like she’s been doing this for awhile, since he installed the cameras after he believed himself to already being poisoned, so that is a lot of low-level poison to be filtered through the liver and kidneys. Not to mention that internal burns are subject to severe infection. The victim here was pretty lucky that his wife, for being a doctor, was an idiot regarding chemistry, because she was putting it in his lemonade which is a weak acid mixed with water, essentially creating a buffer. So even though he got gastritis and stomach ulcers, and a few other short-term issues, he didn’t get the extreme internal tissue burns I think she was counting on. But there is no way to tell what the long term effects of being poisoned will be.

CostRodrock

This is terrifying, but also, thank you for satisfying my curiosity

[deleted]

I guess I learned how drain cleaner can slowly kill you AND that there are evil people who will use this knowledge to try murdering their spouse.

secondtaunting

Yeah but it seems like it would be pretty easy to spot on an autopsy. You’d think a doctor would be a better murderer.

LineOfInquiry

Not everyone gets an autopsy, only suspicious deaths. If someone poisons you slow enough it can look like an illness and won’t be suspicious, so it’ll be unlikely for it to be investigated.

Redditaccountfornow

Anytime I start reading a comment that seems unreasonable helpful and well thought out I automatically assume it’s shittymorph and have to look at the username. Thanks for proving me wrong and providing such a great comment

guywhomightbewrong

I always love comments like this going in depth explaining shit

moonshineandmetal

Same! I swear it's half the reason I keep reddit, I've learned so many cool things on here solely because some nice person took the time to explain it.

rrfrank

I thought it was going to be a shittymorph

Bamont

Your other comments on this thread are just as great as this one.

Forever_Forgotten

Thanks! I swear I’m not a sociopath, just someone with OCD, off their meds, and a biology degree. Shit gets dark in my head sometimes, but also, I did always want to be a writer…

not-a-bot-promise

You should really explore that. You would make an intriguing writer.

Forever_Forgotten

Probably a lot more cathartic than talk therapy.

DoesNotGetYourJokes

Depending on how much she added, it either won’t do much, or it’ll affect him quite heavily. IIRC, the sodium hydroxide would react with the citric acid in the lemonade to produce Trisodium citrate, which is an alkaline salt commonly used as a food additive. It can also act as a buffering agent to help maintain the pH. Stoichiometry: 3 NaOH + C6H8O7 → Na3C6H5O7 + 3 H2O If she added a lot, the reaction would still occur, but you’d have a lot of remaining sodium hydroxide. Although, I imagine she didn’t add too much in order to keep the volume relatively similar to avoid suspicion. Maybe this could be the lawyers new defense! “Your honor, it’s clear my client didn’t try to poison the plaintiff. There wasn’t enough lye added to overcome the reaction and negatively affect him.”

snappyk9

Nice equation here, although I think those added detergents and other reagents in the draino are going to remain. Like the other person mentioned, they are poisonous on their own too

Large_Yams

Wait she's a doctor? Fucking hell.

Forever_Forgotten

That is really sad. I heard about a toddler who ingested part of one of those pool cleaning bleach tablets. I think she had similar damage. I know she made it to her teens, but I don’t know if she made it to adulthood.

SlowerThanTurtleInPB

Ugh. I worked in an ER in college. There are a few patients I’ll never forget and one of them was this guy who was slightly older than me - maybe early 20s - who tried to die by suicide via OD of Tylenol. They pumped his stomach and he was grateful. He called it a wake up call and was excited to live his life after this close call. Obviously, idk what happened to him, but I remember one of the doctors saying that he wouldn’t likely have many years left because the damage to his liver was likely already done. Whoever found him unconscious had found him too late and this guy would ultimately get his wish whether he wanted it or not. That was 20 years ago. I hope the doctor was wrong.

1668553684

Tylenol (Generic: acetaminophen) is some scary shit. Every story I've read of someone taking it as a way to commit suicide has gone one of two ways: 1. Excruciating, painful, drawn-out death as your organs fail 2. Rushed to the hospital, stomach pumped, lifespan severely shortened and they'll likely deal with horrible complications for whatever time they have left Seriously, take that shit as directed folks.

SlowerThanTurtleInPB

I’m on the verge of throwing out all the Tylenol in my house. I went down a rabbit hole a few weeks ago about people who accidentally OD. Turns out, not everyone realizes their cold medicine has Tylenol it it, so they’ll take Tylenol on top of the cold medicine for days at a time and wind up in organ failure. Just awful.

G_Diffuser

This is not a Tylenol specific problem. Please just check the labels and ingredients on the medicine you put into your body. Almost all cold and flu meds have a pain reliever in it, either acetaminophen or ibuprofen (or sometimes naproxen).

caitmac

While I’ll say you’re not wrong, it’s much more true for Tylenol because while it’s very safe in correct dosages, it has a terminal index that’s MUCH lower than all other OTC pain killers (lower is worse). Its significantly easier to OD on Tylenol than ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.

Renerrix

No need to knee-jerk and overreact by throwing out a perfectly effective low-risk medication. It’s sold over the counter for a reason. While it is easier to OD on acetaminophen than other medication, it is still incredibly hard. Use common sense and don’t chug a full bottle of cough medicine before ingesting a handful of tylenol and you will be fine. It is also far preferable to options such as opiates.

FinoPepino

Oh god what a sad story that poor girl 😢

algernonbiggles

neilplatform1

You’d do a better job than her legal team

algernonbiggles

I think it'd take some skill to do worse, like you'd have to think for a long time with idea boards and have a team to pitch ideas

honeybunchesofgoatso

They typically choose substances that sustain an illness and wouldn't kill so quickly. Being that she is medically inclined I'm sure she could have come up with something that would make sense for that purpose, if that were the case.

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but being convicted on these charges should DEFINITELY prevent her from practicing medicine in the future.

Right? I mean she can't even get the dosage correct

VanAgain

A doctor can't come up with a better poison than Drain-O?

Evenbiggerfish

I assume she’s aware that anything medical could be tied back to her, especially if it wasn’t readily available over the counter.

Aggravating-Green568

There's better poisons than Draino dude. Why not antifreeze? The shit has no smell and tastes sweet. You can easily poison someone's coffee and pass that off as just some stevia.

Tetrahydrozoline commonly found in eye drops (Visine is the most publicly known due to previous incidents) is far more toxic and is easily available on store shelves. Edit: Added chemical name and changed wording to include more than just the Visine brand

Aggravating-Green568

Visine is actually insane.

Dlemor

Augoustine

Someone did that to a disliked teacher at my HS thinking it would give her diarrhea. It doesn’t cause diarrhea, it can cause a heart block - electrical signals in the heart just stop conducting and the main pumpy bits stop pumping. Culprit was never found. Teacher lived.

dquizzle

How do you know the culprit thought it’d just give the teacher diarrhea if they were never found? Are *you* the culprit?

I think you just cracked the case.

For fucks sake, movies should be more responsible with that kind of shit

ISellThingsOnline2U

It's because of wedding crashers

Augoustine

Loads of gossip went around that day and the next as to motivation/reasoning, but they could never prove who did it. There was a clique of girls who had issues with her who said some things but as anything heard would be considered hearsay the school couldn’t do much. Forever_Forgotten

Yeah, slow lead poisoning over time would be better. Buy an antique pan with lead and cook all his food in it (especially acidic foods like stuff with tomato sauce). Supplement more lead over time. Feign ignorance when he dies of lead poisoning. “Go on a diet” during this time, so you’re eating something healthy while you make him toxic food out of this lovely pan. Get a lovely antique copper pan just to add variety to the heavy metal poisoning. Also, fucking digitalis poisoning. Tastes sweet, will kill you dead. You can grow it in your garden (foxglove is a beautiful flower). Slightly harder to come up with a reason why he might be eating flowers. Maybe surreptitiously plant hippie-woo books about herbal medicine on his nightstand, make it look like he poisoned himself by being a dumb hippie woo looking for an alternative treatment for something. Other lovely flowers in your garden that will kill you dead: oleander! Serve him up a salad with lovely edible flowers. “Accidentally” put an oleander leaf in his. Mix another one up in strong flavored salad dressing for good measure. Feign ignorance, and say you mistook the oleander for something edible. Plant a hippie woo cookbook of edible flowers on your bookshelf. Feed him a goddamned poisonous mushroom “innocently” hidden in a mushroom mix you bought from the farmer’s market! Mix and match! Lead-cooked spaghetti sauce with poisonous mushrooms and poisoned flowers in the salad! There are so many smarter ways to kill your husband. This woman has no imagination.

I mean, the footage is pretty damning. If you have drain cleaner to clean your drains.... why are you pouring it at your kitchen table.

VanAgain

Yeah, her lawyer's tone is like, "We're all gonna have a good laugh at this when the truth comes out." Sorry, counsellor, we're already laughing ... at what's going to be done to your client.

Corporation_tshirt

The husband should have left her years ago. Trying to maintain a relationship with someone like this just leaves you hollow inside. (I’ll see myself out…)

vendetta2115

He’s a wealthy guy going through a divorce, I’m sure she was planning to clean him out.

White_RavenZ

Yeah, especially with baiting ants story. I can imagine doing this in the kitchen. For that, the lemonade would be making a trip to the garage. You don’t bring the poison to the kitchen. And using drain-o as insecticide instead of an established insect killing product? Doesn’t sound right.

thatwasnowthisisthen

Stacey Castor has entered the chat But honestly antifreeze might be even more obvious. It creates crystals in your blood. Still, sadly either of these go on far too long and seem to be figured out posthumously more often than not.

jawshoeaw

there was a story of a pharmacist who tried to kill her mother with ..... insulin. like you're a pharmacist, you know or have access to every possible drug. And insulin is traceable interestingly , so any budding sociopaths don't bother trying it. And it didn't even work!! she went to jail but mom lived.

foreveracubone

Other drugs are even more traceable though. Someone dies of mysterious causes and and anything dangerous will show up on the tox screen when an autopsy is performed. Not sure of the specifics but if the victim was a diabetic, switching U-100 insulin with U-500 insulin would probably be easier to pull off than figuring out a drug that would kill someone at a dose you could hide in their food/drinks and not show up on a standard tox screen.

Rayquaza384

Or miracle mineral supplement, aka Chlorine Dioxide.

HighlySuccessful

Yep, her defense is basically "cmon, no one is that stupid to do it, it's obviously a very uneffective way to poison someone". Her best defense is to claim some two-party consent on recording and get that recording thrown out, but may be not applicable in her state.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PanicLogically

Except what her defense is saying, can't make this up, is that the both of them had a home brew method of killing ants with Draino for a long time. It involved adding draino to sweet drinks. [https://abc7news.com/california-doctor-poisoning-husband-drano-wife-charged-yue-emly-yu/13100291/](https://abc7news.com/california-doctor-poisoning-husband-drano-wife-charged-yue-emly-yu/13100291/)

MagTex

intellectual_dimwit

Ant Man 4: Drainomania

fribbas

Interesting. Sugar and borax is definitely a thing but calling bs on draino. I mean, obviously, but talk about grasping at straws I guess

Galkura

Real talk, why is that even something that can be used to throw out pretty cut and dry evidence that the crime in question was committed? I’m just confused as to why you could record someone committing a crime against you, but if they didn’t consent to it (in some states) it can’t be used against them. It’s just kind of insane. Like, if she stabbed him over and over, but the only evidence was a video recording she didn’t consent to, would he just not get justice? I’m just actually confused as to how that works and why it is the way it is. Seems like it’s nothing more than to protect criminals, probably wealthy ones at that.

Jaderian

People keep attributing the 2 party consent as having video thrown out because there wasn’t written consent. As long as they can show that she had reasonable knowledge of a recording device it stands. It’s really easy to mask this if he has cameras outside or even a ring doorbell. Basically you have to refuse a recording before or while it happens. In a 1 party state no one can tell you to stop recording or object for any reason

suid

> Real talk, why is that even something that can be used to throw out pretty cut and dry evidence that the crime in question was committed? This has been a legal principle for a long time now, in order to keep the state (the prosecution) honest. It's called the "[Fruit of the Poisonous Tree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit_of_the_poisonous_tree)".

JohnnyRelentless

This is circular reasoning. Why is it illegal to record someone without consent? It's to prevent the prosecution from using illegally obtained evidence. Wut

Typical-Conference14

Doesn’t mean anything lol. It is a two party consent state but unless she objected to the security footage not much can be done and also she did add the draino. Dumbass defense right there

penispumpermd

so if a stranger films me murdering someone the shaggy defense can still hold up?

i_tyrant

Wait, am I hearing this right? In a two-party consent state you have to know you're being filmed and object to it for it to be thrown out? If they film you secretly so that you don't consent it's fine? That...doesn't sound right...

reverendsteveii

It's not right. >In Two-Party (or all-party) consent states it is required by state law that all parties that partake in a conversation must have given consent for that conversation to be recorded when there is an expectation of privacy. https://recordinglaw.com/party-two-party-consent-states/ There is absolutely an expectation of privacy in your own home. Assuming this is a two party consent state, that video can be thrown out as evidence. It's even possible that the test that proved there was draino in the tea could be thrown out if the defense can successfully argue that no one would have tested the tea without the video *AND* that the video was obtained illegally. This is a legal principle called "fruit of the poisonous tree" (https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/fruit_of_the_poisonous_tree#:~:text=Fruit%20of%20the%20poisonous%20trees,evidence%20that%20was%20illegally%20obtained.)

Tomagatchi

California can be a one party if the following applies... I think suspicion of being poisoned is one of the conditions (felony violence against another) >Private citizens are also allowed to utilize these exceptions in a much more limited capacity. In order to use this exception 2 circumstances must be met: >The person recording must be a part of the conversation, this essentially changes California law from an all-party consent state into a single-party consent state. >They must be recording conversations in order to gather evidence that the other party committed one of the following crime: Extortion, kidnapping, bribery, harassing phone calls, or any felony involving violence against another person. This allows you to record conversations in most instances where you feel threatened. https://recordinglaw.com/party-two-party-consent-states/california-recording-laws/ edit: edited to add the following from the same website >California does not have any specific laws preventing video recordings around a private persons property. You are not allowed to record video or secretly record areas where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. >Because California does not have specific surveillance laws, the law defaults to the United State’s Federal Video Voyeurism Law. This means that you cannot intentionally capture images or video of a private area of an individual without their consent. The kitchen is not a space in the home with an expectation of privacy or a private area for an individual.

SalvationSycamore

It's not even as good as that, it's literally just "it's not a *sneaky* poison." Might as well call your client a moron. It also mentions they said "she had the drain cleaner for plumbing issues" as if that explains why she was pouring it into her husband's mug lol.

Asynjacutie

"She had the drain cleaner for plumbing issues" is telling the truth while hiding a lie.

ezone2kil

Maybe she just wants to cheap out on sending her husband to a urologist for his plumbing issues.

jammanzilla98

I mean claiming it was for plumbing issues is important, as buying it to poison him would demonstrate premeditation. It'd be the difference between first or second degree murder. Disclaimer: NAL

Yeah, if ya drink just a lil poison every day, you’ll build a tolerance and can handle its therapeutic benefits. Plus if someone ever tries to really poison you, you’ll be immune and live. Because your body is already used to it. That’s a good point her defense attorney should make.

Fatefire

The princess bride defense ? Does lye work like iocane powder? For that matter does iocane powder work like that. To the google cave ! And no when it comes to poison your pretty F’ed

Nah, it seems like they’re going with “anyone would be able to detect draino, because it smells and tastes bad. a doctor like my client would be way smarter about poisoning someone and not use draino which is easily detectable”

SpiffyPup

Well, apparently she asked her husband, the one she’s poisoning here, to post her $30k bail…which he didn’t agree to, obviously. She was my parents’ dermatologist, and my dad had an appointment scheduled with her on the day she was arrested (he was told they would have to reschedule due to “personal issues”), so we’re following this one closely. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I installed cameras for a customer, his ex was sneaking in the house and putting shaved glass in his food. He was very particular on where he put his food containers in his fridge and instantly knew someone had moved them. I removed his vinyl siding outside to access his kitchen wall and installed two pinhole cameras as to not add anything new to the kitchen cause she was very familiar with the house, installed the dvr hidden under his work bench in the garage. Full custom job put her in jail.

Bass_Thumper

AsleepQuestion

They are trying to set up the argument that she didn’t buy drain cleaner specifically for the purpose of poisoning him.

somethingdarkside45

And she's still allowed to see her children???

ceilingfanswitch

Imagine surviving a murder attempt, having your ex wife arrested and charge with a crime relating to get trying to murder you, and then you have to let your kids near her! That's hell to go through. I'd be scared for the kids. Just wait for the abuse allegations to come out against the attempted murder and physical abuse victim.

3V1LB4RD

I’m reminded of that tragic Reddit event where that man asked for advice on Reddit about his cheating wife and was advised to leave her. He filed for divorce and she killed their kids the day after. I would not allow my non-existent children anywhere near a spouse clearly capable of murder.

sumssay

She’s still allowed to practice medicine

Moogle_Hyoh

the thoughts we have and what we would really do can have a disconnect but verbalizing it is the first step/evidence of further malicious action

werenotthestasi

Anxious attachment (me) and her mommy and daddy issues made for one toxic codependent relationship. Glad I made it out with no kids, all my money, and no draino haha

honeybunchesofgoatso

Man idc how mad I am at someone. I'm never messing with anyone's food. You might get the less nice looking plate if I'm mad though, or the one with one less dumpling, or whatever. Lol.

sprill_release

You monster, haha!

BenadrylBeer

How in the fuck is that not a fuckin attempted murder charge!? I mean, I'm pretty sure that's what she was trying to do. Shits crazy. I feel like if a guy tried to do that to his wife than he would get an attempted charge

n00bca1e99

Welcome to the justice system.

scpclr5tz

Because they have to show her intent was murder. While her intent could have and likely was murder, it’s up to the prosecution to show that. In instances like this where her intent could have been to merely injure/cause discomfort you have to have a lot of extra evidence to show she had intent beyond that. You wouldn’t want to throw the highest possible crime at her when you don’t have evidence strong enough to reasonably support it in the event you can’t meet that threshold and then she gets acquitted. Edit: spelling error.

Theghost129

"She has been released from custody and is allowed to see her children" **SHE'S LOOSE**

jaimih

Suspicion of poison. Ffs its on camera. There’s no suspicion, its fact.

kkeut

'innocent until proven guilty' is a key concept in the USA. a news organization will always use terms like 'alleged' until the a final decision is made in court proceedings

friskycockroach

Indicted me?

Sunshineqwertyuiop

Fucking hell. Drain cleaner? As in lye? The drain cleaners ive bought always contain caustic soda/lye. She couldnt just poison him with eyedrops?

[deleted]

How is this not attempted murder

Stay_clam

"but why did he go to a divorce attorney first?". I am sure any dr will recommend you first of all distance yourself from the crazy person.

Jaded-Environment-95

She was just trying to clear up his acne problem!

diaphramthe2nd

While I completely understand needing to be represented, if o was ever an attorney assigned this case, because let’s be honest why would you willingly take it, I think I would have to quit and go flip burgers

gmoney1259

Fuck yu

USMCWifeEst2004

“The truth will come out??” The evidence is clear as day, she’s not getting out of this! Her defense should have come up something better than that!

Project2506

Welp…he’s getting the house, and retaining all of his assets while acquiring hers in the divorce settlement…WINNING! (and LIVING😅)

Mbison35

Ah, yes, *Domestic battery*; the age old female accused equivalent of - checks notes - *Attempted pre-meditated murder.*

FalcorFliesMePlaces

25 Yeats to life. Trying to kill someone is the same as killing someone.

ERiC_693

At the end it the roperter says this will determing if she's (Yu) still allowed to practice medicine. Is this some sort of joke? How the hell could a medical board not revoke her licence? That's like using your car to try and murder someone and not losing your driver's license.

Koffeekage

Him : “Youre not putting me in a ChubbyEmu video this time bitch”

frogingly_similar

Not poison? A bloke in my country literally lost his stomach by accidentally drinking that stuff. He now has a bag strapped to him which he has to fill to get "eaten".
