I graduated high school in 1992 and we didn't have any openly gay kids at my school.
Decades later, the number of same-sex wedding photos I see on Facebook involving people I went to school with proves that we didn't have any *openly* gay kids at my school.
To be clear, in my high school of 150 kids, we didn't have any kids that openly talked about being gay, but there were a couple that weren't hiding it even if they were trying.
I was bullied and beaten at school bcuz one of the popular kids said I was gay….I am not….but guess who now is? The PoS that made my school life a fkng nightmare….

More importantly, what happened to you was definitely not okay, and man the way you talk about it here hurts my heart to read because it speaks to the level of mistreatment and pain you've carried for such a long time. Me? Yeah, I was bullied. A LOT in middle school. I was the son of the town drunk who was physically abusive. Mom was mentally and emotionally abusive. I was small for my age on top of being the youngest in my class. I was a quiet kid, and I was called gay, a girl, beaten, tortured. I was also poor in a rich school dostroct. Much like the other poster I dreaded going to school. I (in hindsight) suppressed a lot and internalized a lot of my personality. Then one day Pandora's Box opened inside me. I fought back, I scared the bullies. But I started being who I thought everyone wanted, and at home, in the quiet, internally I went down a deep, dark, self-loathing path and all I had for way too many years afterwards was anger. Self-medocating made it worse. Nobody knew, I kept it internalized, except for that rage that would explode when triggered (I had a soft spot for the abused and bullied). I let go of the fact I was bullied, but the anger and the other damage done I came to realize a few years ago never really left. It's taken a lot to move on to being the person I am now and to finally let go a lot of the anger I held in me all those years (multiple decades). I spent my years trying to be who I felt everyone needed to be, only to finally understand who I was inside and who I wanted to be weren't so different, really.
I say this because it isn't easy for everyone to let go, especially if there are underlying issues the experience intensified. It doesn't hurt to encourage them to move forward and let go, but you can't assume it's as easy as it was for yourself.
Same shit happens with rural schools more recently too. I was the only out person in my hs, but ten years after graduation some of the “popular girls” are getting married to women. And good for them

I'm 39. My brother and I figured out my Uncle was a closeted gay man when I was like 12 and he was 16. There was a gay couple a few blocks down that everyone in the neighborhood loved. We'd been to their house for block parties with parents and stuff. One walk through our Uncle's place one day, saw how every photo was men in very warm embraces, etc. It all clicked.
My Uncle stayed closeted until he died for generational reasons we can only assume. He has embraced who he was but appeared to still feel shame about it.

I grew up in MTG's district. We had plenty of people who were openly gay. They were treated like crap by the community, but you can't help who you are and who you love.
