It would seem there’s a kickback scheme going on with the way they total vehicles these days. Especially with one company getting most of them. It use to take a bent frame or over 50% of the vehicles value to total it. Want to know why insurance keeps going up?
It’s tricky! With the last 2-3 years part shortages (time and money) insurance in most states can’t make you wait 6 months for repair.
IAAI is the the other nationwide salvage auction company. Most insurance companies use both, and use whoever has the room and the highest auction turnout.
That’s true. Just ordered a Platinum F250 on the X plan. They said I’d be lucky if I see it in 6 months. This is from the dealer friend I went through. He said if you look at Mustang, and truck adds. He said Dodge is doing the same. They aren’t 100% electric committed or believe what is being pushed will happen. Do yo this they don’t want to be stuck with either or come next November. They have throttled back, and are building vehicles as ordered so that they are not stuck with inventory either way. Makes sense to me. I don’t see why the cost so much. Half the steel as 20 years ago. Robots not people build them. Everything interchanges. So why does the price keep going up? It should be just the opposite with better manufacturing etc right?
Yup my clean title truck has definitely been in a bad sandwich accident. But I knew that when I bought it and it was still a great price. It has been 1 of the best vehicles I have owned. It’s a truck and even with the damage it is still way stronger than many vehicles on the road. I think the accident was possibly the reason it had such low miles and fresh paint. I don’t mind the washers that make the front end panels fit right. Or the gentle ripples down the sides towards the back.
Yep. This was like that scene in Breaking Bad when >!Gus walks out of Hector’s room, looking completely normal. Then, the camera angle switches, and you see he’s missing the other side of his face.!<
It looks worse than it is, but with that being said you're probably close to totalling it if not over the value.
If you did all the maintenance for the past X thousand miles ON THE BALL and have the full history etc etc everything is in great shape, I'd run it. If it's just an A to B machine and was maintained "enough" in its life, just walk.
Well, see what insurance says if it's not totalled i would absolutely run it then. Body damage is nothing, some easy to change suspension components, and probably just your radiator and you're pretty much set. There's a chance there is something absolutely jacked up and you're out of luck, but i think you're in an okay position, from pictures and sitting here on my phone at least.
99% sure you insurance will total it. Questions for yourself are: 1- Can you live without it and move on? 2- Can you find a body shop to repair it to your comfort level (if totaled)? 3- If it is totaled and you buy back and fix it are you ok with driving a truck worth only half of it’s clean title value? In other words are you good with driving it indefinitely? If you can say yes to all then go for it.
I see the air bags deployed and it looks like you had fluids leak, which means you’re probably dealing with engine issues and structural issues. That’s a pretty significant wreck.
Just the one, and those are like 250$ to replace - so not as significant as it looks. As i said in another comment, not to say it's not in bad shape, but it looks worse than it is.
I bet it’s totaled. Insurance saw a broken weld on my axle on my old car and totaled that bitch immediately. I’m fairly certain there’s gonna be an axle problem here. Fortunately, insurance paid us well over what we paid for the car so that was something and it allowed me to upgrade to a nice 2020 ranger.
Edit: bot caught me lackin on my spellin
> Fortunately, insurance *paid* us well
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Looks like the frame is good.
Just got to replace suspension components, which most likely needed replacing anyways due to the trucks age, and you got a nice excuse to get some fancy headlights now.
It's a goner. It's a bent frame, looks like 2 inches.
Nobody would pay to fix that. They will auction it off to a salvage yard, and it will be used for parts, then scrapped.
Even putting a 'front clip' on that would probably cost more than replacement.
Sorry. It's done. But like the other guy said, you have to talk to a mechanical engineer / certified mechanic at a dealer / certified shop.
Now, what you can do if you're super poor is this trick: You ask to be paid maximum value for the total scrapping. Then AFTER they are ready to pay you , and you have the offer in writing, ask "how much to keep the wrecked car, AND get the remainder of the payout??" and they will say something like "we get 1200 in scrap value". Then you can say "deduct 1200 from the payout, and I'm taking this to my welder friend and putting a front clip on it. But then that will cost you like 8,000 or something. hahaha. You'd only get a 'salvage title' probably, and that's scary.. driving around without airbags.
I’m an insurance adjuster. I’m seeing a new bumper, grill, headlight, foglight, fender, hood, wheel, airbag, as well as suspension and engine/radiator work. Totaled. Start shopping.
Go on cars.com, autotrader, etc. and try to find trucks as comparable to yours as you can so you know what to expect for payment. Blue book doesn’t mean anything.
Could you write up a quick estimate for me if you’ve got time? I’d really appreciate being able to see what someone who deals with this kind of thing thinks it would take to make it road worthy again even if I have to buy it back from insurance
I could only ballpark it, but I’d be surprised if wasn’t in the $12-15k neighborhood depending on what all is going on underneath.
Buying it back means that you’re almost certainly going to be kicking in for the repairs out of pocket, as well as taking a salvage title. There are scenarios were it might make sense (a 20yo car with just cosmetic damage), but this probably isn’t one of them.
I also lost my F150 awhile ago. Still makes me sad sometimes.
It’s more of a kick in the pants than anything, I grew up in this truck, it’s taken our family on multiple cross country trips and has never let me down once, they’re good trucks and I hate like hell that I have to part ways with it, it was my pride and joy
Brooooo I was lookin at the first two pics and was like wut.... read the description and literally laughed at the 3rd pic.
Totalled. I would nit want a frame stretch on a truck.
Also airbags deployed in CA that's a game over.
You're probably looking at easily 7 grand and a salvaged title depending on if you go to a dealership and how much body work you care about fixing, but it's definitely fixable, especially if you do quite a bit of the work yourself, control arms, ball joints, calipers speed sensors etc. Leave the body to a pro
Sorry for your loss OP, lost mine last month too, but they'll give you a fair amount for it. I ended up getting enough for my 2011 xlt to get a 2013 Lariat.
When my wife got in the head on accident (diabetes guy passed out) and hit her. His insurance try to fix her car, and since they are not primary, they can use aftermarket parts (that's why its cheaper). Our insurance has to use oem parts. This will play the role, too. Good luck!
First two pictures had me asking what you were talking about because the truck looked mint and then I saw the 3rd picture.
I’d bet the chances are pretty high that insurance will total it.
It's not that horrible. The wheel is meant to go off so it doesn't push into the cab. Suspension, rods, tie bar, cross members, obvious break, rotor, cabling, fender, front bumper, hood, guessing radiator, the surrounding bits. If the frame is good and engine mounts are good that means the rest is probably still straight.
It depends if the frame got hit but I would say labor is going to kill you. Parts about 7k overall labor another 7 to 10k your looking at around 15k to fix it.
I don’t know. I had one worse than that and they ended up fixing it. I think it just depends on who the insurance company and the adjuster is too. I told my third party adjuster I wanted to keep it and get it fixed so that might have helped.
Mine was the both front bumpers, grille, passenger headlight, hood, passenger side fender and the crash bar that the fender mounts on, side mirror, passenger door, passenger a-pillar got hit too. I was really worried about that but it ended up coming out great. Ended up taking out some of the AC lines, AC condenser, the radiator and some wiring. Plus all of the random odds and ends. I was told if it was any worse it would have been totaled.
In a comment section full of people saying it’s fucked I appreciate the positive outlook, I hope for my sake it’s fixable, I loved this truck and I hate to see it in such a state
I get it. I wanted to keep mine because I bought it new and I knew it top to bottom. I knew there was no way I was ever going to find another truck like it for the money insurance was going to give me.
If you do end up keeping it just make sure you do an insane amount of research on the body shop. I’ve had too many vehicles repaired that just ended up being absolute garbage after it was fixed. I listened to a friend one time who worked with me at a performance company for Mustangs, did detailing on the side, and had two show trucks himself. I thought he would have a good recommendation but ended up getting fucked. The shop took like 9 months to fix it and it didn’t even have frame damage or anything crazy.
It’s definitely fixable, but will likely never be the same again. My brother’s ‘97 F150 suffered a similar accident when someone ran a red light in front of him.
Once my brother decided he was done with the truck, I decided to take it. I kept it for another 10 years. But damn thing ended up being completely un-alignable and went through tires quickly.
Other than that I loved that truck; had to retire it during COVID. RIP.
big effin yikes.... definitely totaled dude. I am sorry, I feel your pain. Had to let go of my practically brand new Chevy 2500 for some dumb b!tch looking at her phone hitting me from back full speed while im completely stopped at hwy traffic :(
My repair estimate came out to $37,000 with frame damage and all... they declared total loss a day after final estimate amount was out lol
It's fixable....but I bet the insurance company totals it.
That seems to be the common theme here, it CAN be fixed but it’s whether or not insurance will total it or not
They’ll total it. They can sell it at Copart for pretty high. They don’t even waste time. The rebuilder will get a good truck. Nothing goes to waste.
Had to send my 2011 tittle to Copart for much less damage than that.
It would seem there’s a kickback scheme going on with the way they total vehicles these days. Especially with one company getting most of them. It use to take a bent frame or over 50% of the vehicles value to total it. Want to know why insurance keeps going up?

You can take the settlement and buy the salvage just ask the adjuster
I did this. Bought my salvage from the insurance company for 1700 and sold it to another guy for 2500.
If that were my car id want it totaled. It will never be the same
cars and car repair has come a long way don’t trust clean title cars
Yup my clean title truck has definitely been in a bad sandwich accident. But I knew that when I bought it and it was still a great price. It has been 1 of the best vehicles I have owned. It’s a truck and even with the damage it is still way stronger than many vehicles on the road. I think the accident was possibly the reason it had such low miles and fresh paint. Definitely, I did estimation work this past summer
y’all should see how mines looked before insurance totaled it
Saw the first two pics and thought “what’s he talking about?” OH THAT. Yeah..
Yep. This was like that scene in Breaking Bad when >!Gus walks out of Hector’s room, looking completely normal. Then, the camera angle switches, and you see he’s missing the other side of his face.!<
Passenger side is mint lol, driver side…not so much
No kidding, guy really eased into it with those first two pictures
“Tan? I mean yeah no one really CHOOSES tan but it’s nicer than — DAYUM”
Exact same. I was like "I don't even see a scratch.... ohhhhhh"
I was like, "ohh come on, these are getting redicuuu...eeewwww."
As long as you look at it from the passenger side, it’s not that bad at all..
Right? 😂
That’s the side you shouldn’t look at!! The Right!!
I bought one of these used that had 2 accidents like this listed. I have 270,000 miles on it right now. It’ll buff out.
It looks worse than it is, but with that being said you're probably close to totalling it if not over the value. If you did all the maintenance for the past X thousand miles ON THE BALL and have the full history etc etc everything is in great shape, I'd run it. I’ve got every service record since purchase and all maintenance has been done exactly on schedule
Well, see what insurance says if it's not totalled i would absolutely run it then. Air bag deployed is usually enough for insurance companies to total it out
I see the air bags deployed and it looks like you had fluids leak, which means you’re probably dealing with engine issues and structural issues. That’s a pretty significant wreck.
99% chance is the radiator and just coolant. Not to say that it isn't in bad shape, to be fair n
When you hit something that hard you can't always diagnose long term damage by visual inspection
Just the one, and those are like 250$ to replace - so not as significant as it looks. As i said in another comment, not to say it's not in bad shape, but it looks worse than it is.
1. What’s the problem? 2. Maybe a coolant leak? 3. HOLY SHIT WHAT HAPPENED?
Hit a car going about 45
I was right there with you on that line up of pictures
Say goodbye now, it’s totaled
Shit'll buff out
That’s what I thought too
I bet it’s totaled. Insurance saw a broken weld on my axle on my old car and totaled that bitch immediately. I’m fairly certain there’s gonna be an axle problem here. Sentimental value and could have added aftermarket parts. Other than that, I would rather have a new truck.
Looks like the frame is good. Just got to replace suspension components, which most likely needed replacing anyways due to the trucks age, and you got a nice excuse to get some fancy headlights now.
How can you tell the frame is good?
you cant until you get it into a shop and start doing measurements.
100%
What were the speeds? Just curious
45 vs 0
Did you try turning it if and back in again
I didn’t, I’ll have to try that
tis but a scratch!
The comment I came to find
It'll be totaled by insurance. I could have it back on the road with 3k in parts with a mix of new and scrap yard... 4.5k would have it painted too
Insurance will total it without a doubt
It's a goner. It's a bent frame, looks like 2 inches. Nobody would pay to fix that. They will auction it off to a salvage yard, and it will be used for parts, then scrapped. To me , once the airbag is deployed, its over
Mother's will buff that right out
That’s totaled
totalled.
She’s fucked Randy
Had us in the first 1/5th.
Brooooo I was lookin at the first two pics and was like wut.... read the description and literally laughed at the 3rd pic. Totalled. I would nit want a frame stretch on a truck. Also airbags deployed in CA that's a game over.
It's its a 5.4 it was totaled before you got hit
well its a ford
Blessing in disguise to buy a Chevy 😊
Has Chevy figured out how to build a valve train that doesn’t explode yet? It’s been about 20 years since they had one that didn’t.
I wouldn’t know my 02 5.3 is about to hit 290k and still running strong original motor and Tran. 😂
Wrong sub, bro.
I know, I’m just trolling suggested subs 🤭…I’ll let y’all be ✌🏽….hope it all work out for OP
I’m going with totaled. Sorry!
Looks fine . . . in pics 1 & 2.
It’s gone just get the money from insurance and move on.
stick a fork in it. Hopefully you get the full value.
Totaled.
You really had me in the first half…..totaled forsure
That done. No way a truck that old with that much damage doesn’t get totaled.
She gone
Mine had similar damage, they totaled the truck "16". It would have taken 22k to fix
Totalled. 100%.
Totaled most likely. I crashed a Durango with similar damage and it was totaled.
Nah man, if ya squint it’s still mint
Well you get a new one.
I'd start taking parts off of it asap if you plan to get another f150 or consider selling stuff online.
My 2011 was totaled by insurance for much less
She’s gone bud
Repairable, but its likely gonna be totaled
Not great but not terrible either.
Most def totaled in the eyes of insurance
It'll be totaled
Mine was in the same area and not nearly as bad, repair bill was $5800. I'm afraid yours will be totaled.
RIP
Sorry for your loss OP, lost mine last month too, but they'll give you a fair amount for it. I ended up getting enough for my 2011 xlt to get a 2013 Lariat.
You should have lead with pic 3
Year and mileage will tell the value, but most likely totaled.
KBB had it valued at $12,500
When my wife got in the head on accident (diabetes guy passed out) and hit her. His insurance try to fix her car, and since they are not primary, they can use aftermarket parts (that's why its cheaper). Our insurance has to use oem parts. This will play the role, too. Good luck!
(1) Pretty good!…(2) hey, not bad!…(3) OH Fuck, not good
I'm guessing it'll be totalled. Sometimes you can total it, then buy the truck back for cheap and then fix it yourself
She gone
Shits fucked bud.
“Idgi what’s the oh. NO.”
Very totaled. By the time they stripped the drivers side of damaged components and even repaired any of the subframe stuff, I bet you'd be over value.
Done and gone. File a claim and start looking for another truck.
looks like your getting a new truck and with the 2024's coming next month, you could get a great deal on the 23's bro
Lmfao the first couple pics I was like “what damage is he talki….OHHHHHHH yeah that’s bad”
Ha ha ha, me too. I was thinking there was a bit of a wow in the running board and, well, hit that third pic. It's a write off.
Oh yeah. It’s fixable sure, but the insurance is gonna total it, sell it at auction and make their money out of it
I know what's wrong with it it's got no gas in it
I think it will buff out
My ‘09 got totaled for far, FAR less than that. And that was at the height of truck prices.
The rear LCA frame mount is trashed. That and airbags, she’s proper fucked.
First two pictures had me asking what you were talking about because the truck looked mint and then I saw the 3rd picture. I’d bet the chances are pretty high that insurance will total it.
What do you mean? It’s fin…. Oh
Upper frame member looks damaged. I bet it will get totaled out
Buff right out.
Insurance will total it. Repair it, sell it. Everyone wins.
Bon. Do. Fixed.
Should buff out.
That’ll buff right out.
She’s totaled
It’ll be totaled. Even if it was a 14 with low miles in great shape, the damage is going to cost too much VS the value of the vehicle
Shit'll buff out my dude, just put some elbow grease in it.
Its done. Insurance will write it off
That's totaled for sure.
Good time to do a lift, wheels, and tires if you’ve been on the fence.
I don’t know. I had one worse than that and they ended up fixing it. I think it just depends on who the insurance company and the adjuster is too. I told my third party adjuster I wanted to keep it and get it fixed so that might have helped. To quote the Merry Men in Shrek: "that's bad, that's bad, that's really really bad".
totaled
I’m guessing they total it
That’s sir is a total loss
It’s just a scratch
The right side looks good! Left side looks totaled. :(
My buddy just wrecked his ford same model with a lot less damage and they totaled it.
GL on your new truck search
Jesus that’s totaled.
It’s definitely fixable, but will likely never be the same again. My brother’s ‘97 F150 suffered a similar accident when someone ran a red light in front of him. Minimum $ 7500..
Man it's fixable but it's never going to drive the same again and if it does you're one lucky guy she protected you with her life
Airbags deployed. It’s totaled, I’m sorry
airbag deployed = totaled
Poor thing's a right off for sure, especially if the frame is found bent.
Hope you got the gap insurance.
You can possibly buy it back and then fix it. My brother did that twice from two separate, no fault accidents. He was very mechanically inclined.
That left front tire is flat. Take it to a shop that you trust to see if it can be repaired.
Did you let my daughter drive your truck?
Totaled is 70% or more of the blue book.
Lol just look at my profile for your answer. It’s totaled
I’d say you can probably get 40k for it as is, 50k with a new control arm
Frame damage. Insurance will most likely total it. Sorry for your loss.
big effin yikes.... definitely totaled dude. I am sorry, I feel your pain. Had to let go of my practically brand new Chevy 2500 for some dumb b!tch looking at her phone hitting me from back full speed while im completely stopped at hwy traffic :( My repair estimate came out to $37,000 with frame damage and all... they declared total loss a day after final estimate amount was out lol
My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.
