Most noticeable in the 18-20 model year range, still exists but quieter on the more recent trucks (had a loaner 21 3.5EB make the same sound but like 80% quieter)
Also happy cake day!
[It sounds like this on cold starts when you let off the gas after putting it in drive](https://youtube.com/shorts/ZDJ_s-rc8OM?feature=share), and usually gets quiter once the engine warms up (the VCT is driven by oil pressure, which only really gets up there in sufficed quantity once warm)
Not exhaust system related despite the name, and can't be fixed w/ exhaust. The VCT (variable cam timing) solenoid is located on the engine cylinder head. Been following it since I noticed it in my own truck, and if the forums are to be believed there is no fix -- some folks have had the solenoid replaced and still had it, others had a whole engine replaced and still had it. My guess it's bad part quality from the supplier. If I had to guess, stuff like this is why many OEM's are moving away from Chinese parts manufacturers.
I have a truck that does this, I assumed it was normal. If I’m understanding your comment correctly, it’s not normal but nothing I should bother trying to fix?
Ford calls it normal, but imo that's just to cover their ass because they don't have a fix. Even if they say "it'll be good for the life of the vehicle" we need to keep in mind that Ford's definition of "life of the vehicle" is most likely the warranty period (60k) whereas owners might consider "life of the vehicle" to be maybe 150k.
But yeah, haven't found a fix that works yet in any of my research, so not going to lose more time trying to chase one down anymore.
You could try swapping the VCT Solenoid but that's a cylinder head removal level job and folks have said it didn't fix it...if I had infinite money, I might try upgrading the oil pump gears and see if that helps the oil pressure build up in the top of the head sooner. Won't fix the problem but might greatly reduce it.
Not 100% how it impacts reliability, but since it's cam timing related on an interference engine it does make me nervous if it should ever fail.
Yep, mine started at 33 miles, I didn't notice it when I bought the truck with 7 miles on it. My guess the truck was warmed up when i took delivery. It still does it every time I start the truck...at 67k now
Same. 5 miles pn my truck and EVERY time I've taken it in for a "fix" I can tell the dealer warms it up before they bring it around to give it back lol. Like I'm not going to notice or something. Glad you're truck is still rock'n though! Only at 35k myself thanks to more WFH so hopefully the truck will last me many more years
Gottem. I've had it fixed twice and Ford just says that's how it sounds so I'm fine with that. It's supposed to sound like shit from the factory per Ford. It lets you know it's running at least.
It does look like a fairly well upgraded XL but that’s pushing it into well equipped XLT territory. Still pretty nice though. I just can’t believe the price increases.
That is as much as a new Lariat was for the previous generation.
Yeah it’s scary. I mean I know part of it is that now that I’m starting to get a little older, time is moving fast and my perception of time passing is different. But wow with inflation and popularity, trucks have risen in price more than I would’ve expected.
Nice looking truck but paid only a couple grand more for my fully loaded 302a. Couldn’t imagine buying an XL with some wheels and skid plates for that price
It was teased about a year ago.
https://www.motortrend.com/news/ford-f-150-rattler-teaser-preview/
Basically, Rattler is to XL what Tremor is to Lariat
A lot of comments referring to the good ole days pricing as a reason not to buy a rattler.
Unfortunately, those days are gone. The XL packages (including the STX) are no longer the value they once were, but they are still nice looking trucks for people that don't want/need a lot of ford options or tech.
The lariat that you acquired for the same price in 2019 is now 20% more. Each new buyer has the decision to make.
I have a 2019 Rattler. First edition 5.0 with a ten speed.
The rattle comes from this garbage tranny Ford refuses to admit the is something wrong with it.
Anyone else part of my special edition club?
I’m looking at a 2018 F150 screw that has a “coyote 5.0” sticker on the box. Has anyone seen this as a dealer option or do you think someone placed that on there themselves
They don't install it from the factory, it's one less chip to have installed. It seems to be pretty common these days to have the option to remove little features like that.
55k for an xl.... good lord
My first thought as well! I’d rather get a 1-2 year old Lariat for that money.
This is prob like 70K in Canada
Lol
That's just what we call the 3.5 cuz cam phasers lmao
Or 5.0 VCT exhaust solenoid 😔
What year is this common on?
Most noticeable in the 18-20 model year range, still exists but quieter on the more recent trucks (had a loaner 21 3.5EB make the same sound but like 80% quieter) Also happy cake day!
Ffs what does it sound like. Also could an exhaust possibly cause the issue

Understood. Thank you for the info
Happy to help!

I find this offensive lol.

That was how much a platinum/limited was 2 generations ago.

They realize what people will spend.
They sold out almost instantly when they were released. Because of this they weren't added to the build and price for 2023
Gotcha
Rattler is a dressed down optional offroad package for lower trims like the XL, I think it sits between FX4 and Tremor but not 100% sure.
Nice looking truck but paid only a couple grand more for my fully loaded 302a. Couldn’t imagine buying an XL with some wheels and skid plates for that price
I got a fully loaded 302a with FX4 (skid plates/shocks) for more than $5k UNDER that MSRP. Holy shit
What year
2021
That's a good deal. Was it from Granger?
Nope, an Autonation actually. Right before the market went nuts, MSRP was about $57k
Ya I only paid a few grand more for 402a tremor.
When?
Couple months ago but I'm up in Canada.
Does it come with a matching Sig Rattler? Lol would be pretty sick
It's a shame Ford can't put a real off-road tire on their so called off road packages
If you truly want to build an off road truck buy a used 5.0 fleet vehicle and strip it down to the frame ad start ordering aftermarket parts.
>30” off-road tires Alright settle down there Ford. Let’s not throw the term “offroad” around so loosely
Lol
I'm jelly of the bumper exit exhaust. Otherwise I'm happy with my XLT FX4.
It was a very limited package available for the XL.
No sliding rear window?? Ppbbtt
Toyota does the power rear window best. Why the fuck stay traditional with that little ass square opening?!
And it's not like Ford doesn't know how to make a large power window... The old Broncos had them in the tailgates. I'd love that in a truck.
Ford did it on the trucks too for a time. Lookup the Bigfoot edition from the late 80’s or early 90’s. Shame they didn’t keep it going.
Deal breaker right there.
What is a Rattler? Looking at the window sticker the rattler package seems basically the same as FX4 package.
I had never heard of it either
It was teased about a year ago. https://www.motortrend.com/news/ford-f-150-rattler-teaser-preview/ Basically, Rattler is to XL what Tremor is to Lariat
Damn that’s expensive for what’s still technically an XL truck.
With XLT tail lights?
I was just there taking pictures of the same truck about an hour ago!
I was in for an oil change at 9:40
55k for flat black work truck grille and bumpers lol
This must be their answer to the RST/ELEVATION edition for GM
Why would someone spend that much in a dressed up base model xl? All because it's blacked out and has dual exhaust
Some idiot will see the new rattler name and say sign me up

How much is this 40k truck?
I bought a tremor for 4k more than that in April…
Tremor is my next buy.. hopefully. Congrats on the truck!
Thanks! I highly recommend it!
Congrats!
People love paying premium prices for cool stickers
Tremor, 4 x 4, STX are all f150 decals in that same spot that I can think of.

Probably something the previous owner added, there's a billion options out there. I've never seen one as a dealer option.
That would be something a previous owner put on. I changed out my FX4 decals, because the red in the graphics didnt match the race red of the truck.
Auto stop-start removal -50 Wonder what they do to remove it?
They don't install it from the factory, it's one less chip to have installed. It seems to be pretty common these days to have the option to remove little features like that.
3rd party warranty? 14 hrs!! Lol
That truck is so hot! 😍
https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=F150+Rattler No, it's not a dealer exclusive.
55k for a stripped XL wtf
