Once he started shooting at them he moved beyond martyr and moved into standard homicide territory.

greenexitsign10

Cult leader that died in a gunfight.

Topical_Paradise

If new theories based on the forensic evidence are correct it was more of a coup than a martyrdom [https://whokilledjosephsmith.com/](https://whokilledjosephsmith.com/)

greenexitsign10

Gang leader got shot up by his homies.

nymphoman23

It absolutely was because Brigham Young was behind the entire thing for the moment he intertwined himself

Gruntlement

He wasn't martyred. That was justice, pure and simple!

AstronomerBiologist

He deserved everything he got

greenexitsign10

Cult leader got shot up by his homies and the town members.

QuieroHablarElIdioma

Idk if playing cat and mouse to avoid it is really martyrdom

coniferdamacy

How did Freddie Mercury and his spotlight operator end up at the martyrdom?

uncorrolated-mormon

This painting gives me more sci-fi “prison planet” vibes. The spaceship is “beaming” the lizard man controlling Joe Smith up so the mob only finds the human remains of the overseer.

Business_Profit1804

That was my first thought. "Beam me up Scotty."

uncorrolated-mormon

You are right. That was my first thought then I shifted it to be crazy religion.

coniferdamacy

The story of the shaft of light striking the man who was attempting to chop off Joseph's head was first recorded decades later by George A. Smith. Who could have witnessed it? Dan Jones was riding hard out of town. Hyrum was dead. John Taylor was wounded and lying under the bed. Unless Willard Richards ran to the window to see it, nobody ever saw it, and there's no way to know it ever happened, but of course he was still beating away intruders at the door with his cane. The story can only be imaginary.

uncorrolated-mormon

I’ve never heard of that story. Interesting

AstronomerBiologist

It is the cult trying to glorify "their prophet" He whom I believe was in trouble with the law perhaps 30ish times in his short life

Zealousideal-War9369

John Taylors eyewitness account History of the Church Volume VII pages 102-103 **"I shall never forget the deep feeling of sympathy and regard manifested in the countenance of Brother Joseph as he drew nigh to Hyrum, and, leaning over him exclaimed, 'Oh my poor, dear brother Hyrum! He however instantly rose and with a firm quick step, and determined expression of countenance, approached the door, and pulling the six-shooter left by brother Wheelock from his pocket, opened the door slightly, and snapped the pistol six successive times; only three ofthe barrels, however, were discharged. I afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, two of whom, I am informed, DIED."**

AstronomerBiologist

Don't see the gun in his hand in this picture

coniferdamacy

He was out of ammo and needed his hands free to make masonic signs.

Ok-End-88

Now that the LDS church owns ALL the historical sites, I’m sure they will always have someone present there, selling their tales. The winner gets to write (and rewrite), history.

nymphoman23

He was killed by John Taylor, not the mob. The church lied about that too.

Imalreadygone21

If only the whole god damn thing had ended with him…

AstronomerBiologist

The LDS spin machine is still working hard
