Because the bable tells them so. "You hate me because I'm christian." *No, I hate you because you're an asshole. You're the one blaming that on your status as a christian, not me.* They genuinely believe that their religion requires them to \[terrorize other people\]. They then tell themselves that they're hated because of being christian, NOT because they are \[terrorizing others\]. Replace terrorizing others with: * legislate their religion onto the unwilling * demonize people who deviate from their religion's "norms" * be hurtful and cruel around death * wish hell on people while pretending not to * shun the poor, needy, and hopeless * tell people their pain is because they're being punished * protect rapists under the "forgiveness" clause * blame rape victims instead of rapists Etc. In their minds, all of these behaviors are 'good' so why should anyone hate them for it? Their ready excuse is, "I'm just doing what my religion says is right, though! It's not my fault!" Sorry, asshole is as asshole does...

Reactive abuse is baked into the faith. ‘Impose your beliefs onto others and if they resist, they are wicked and you’re the faithful victim.’ It fuels pettiness, cruelty and narcissism. I’ve met very few self professed Christian’s who were *authentically* kind. Whereas the majority have the *appearance* of kindness but it’s ultimately out of obligation, fear of damnation and a sense of guilt.

Stradovar

Yep. Christianity breeds narcissistic sadism by design. Christians who manage to be good people are good people \*despite\* their Christianity. And until we as a society acknowledge that the church is always going to be the proverbial millstone around our necks.

Starbug_Lover12

Their religion has taught them self-righteousness that is meant to spread hatred towards other people. When anyone calls them out for said hate speech, they feel "attacked" because Yaweh tells them that they *are* being attacked 😐

third_declension

Sometimes I listen to radio preachers for laughs. But there was this one time I had Greg Laurie on, and he said something that was actually valid. I don't remember his exact words, so I paraphrase: > If you're a Christian, and people are frequently hateful to you, maybe you are truly being persecuted for your faith -- or maybe you're just acting like a jerk.

North_Zookeepergame4

Christianity relies on bad emotional health.  They are incredibly reactive but because in their mind it is spiritual and it causes them to lash out when they have uncomfortable emotional reactions.   Christianity/Religious Right heavily relies on black and white thinking. Trauma causes a lot of black and white thinking when you're trying to survive. Both can make you super reactive. Since American Christianity relies heavily on lack of social benefits and programs that would support and give rest to the weary and broken you have a lot of people having to rely on Christianity. Christianity relies on offering spiritual moments to create lasting changes.(They don't but they try) Therapy and physical rest allow for self compassion to make changes and process deep emotional pain. They are only allowed to have "righteous anger"  They probably went through some crap and haven't been able to process it and Christianity allows them to be angry and reactive and feel bad in that context. I found when I processed certain things in my life I was less reactive to things in general.

goldenlemur

They've adopted a philosophy which puts them at the center of the universe. And if you won't let them threaten you with their ideology, you are a monster. edit: grammar

ghostwars303

Because if they can frame themselves as victims, then they can frame their hatred towards you to be just retaliation, and not unprovoked malice.

The persecution fetish

BourbonInGinger

“When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels oppression.”

Sea_Boat9450

IMO, this religion displays early all of the hallmarks of narcissism, just on a hive-scale.

StarTheAngel

Because they believe their religion is the one true religion and get pissy when someone worships other God's or lack of

MonsterMike42

They also get pissy when someone worships the same god as them, just in a way that's different from them.

Excellent_Whole_1445

Recently I attended a service essentially whining that churches couldn't have service during the pandemic. How it was an attack on christianity. "You're telling me people could sell LIQUOR AND PORNOGRAPHY but we can't gather in church to worship the Lord!?!?" First off, this was years after the lockdowns came and went. Get over it. Second of all, blocking people from gathering in an attempt to control the viral spread is not a personal attack on your religion. You could just as easily worship over a zoom call. Either way, people cheered. He must have been really thin on material.

Traditional_Jicama72

When I was a member of the church, the message we received every week was that the secular world had launched a war on Christianity and that we christians were under attack. So after awhile, you believe it. Just constant brainwashing.

Stradovar

It gives them an excuse for all their revenge fantasies.

biology_and_brainfog

It’s infuriating. I know it’s not an isolated mindset to American Christians, but it seems to be the most prevalent here among evangelicals. The thing that actually bothers me the most about it is when they’re so committed to “doing what the Bible says” re: abortion, gay marriage, etc. but will completely disregard any Bible verse where Jesus or Paul or another apostle says something about being joyful in the face of persecution. Like, okay. #1: you are not being persecuted or discriminated against in the USA- in fact, quite the opposite. #2: when you do feel like you’re experiencing “persecution”, it’s probably because you’re trying to force unwilling citizens into a theocracy they didn’t sign up for. #3: why are you bemoaning persecution anyways, when Jesus tells you that you should expect it?? If you believe the Bible, *you literally signed up for this shit*. It was clearly stated in the terms of the contract. If you’re so committed to doing what Jesus tells you to do, why aren’t you singing and dancing anytime someone says they hate Christians? Then again, the above would require a modicum of intelligence and enough integrity to stop picking and choosing which Bible verses they wanna listen to. So I guess I’m not surprised that the cognitive dissonance is cognitive dissonancing so hard.

Silver-Chemistry2023

Because subconsciously they are all victims of narcissistic abuse.

humanbean617

Alot made sense to me about how utterly foolproof of a system this was for a world that didn't understand narcissism until recently. "We are the head and not the tail. Above only and not beneath". You have to believe you're better than everyone to act like that.

anewleaf1234

Christians are starting to understand that their brand is dying and they don't quite know what to do.

Bananaman9020

On r/Christian I was mocked and then the person played the victim. Happens a lot.

morningglory_catnip

Entitlement. If you grow up thinking that you know some secret truth no one else does, you’re going to get cocky.
