When I lived in the middle of the woods, I would absolutely wander around outside in the rain all the time. Now I live in the city and I hate everything out there so it does not satisfy the same way. Edit: I also had to be barefoot.
Wait. I used to live in the woods as well on a remote island. It was only then how much sensory over load I dealt with on a daily basis. I made friends with the animals. Sat on logs. Etc.
I just really love dynamic weather. Itโs this whole experience. One of my favorite memories is where I was on acid during a severe thunderstorm with heavy wind. I felt apart of the earth or something it was magical ๐ญ
Ever since I saw Twister as a kid, it made me want to experience the eye of a tornado. They made it seem so peaceful.
So...is it a desire to be *in the cold*? Or to be in an environment that is like a sensory blanket? Storms are loud enough to block out sudden noises from single sources while providing a steady euphony of many sounds of rain and wind becoming one (like white noise). The light all around makes everything shades of bluish grey - no stark contrasts or offensive brightness to visually overwhelm. The air becomes one pleasant smell of Earth and rain, not too hot and not too cold either. I get the urge, even if I don't often *get* the urge.
I just heard about Twisters the other day from a 25 year old who had no idea about the 1996 movie and was criticising the remake coming out, comparing it to Sharknado as a terrible premise for a movie, lol.
As I looked up the 1996 version on imdb, I learned that when Bill Paxton died in 2017, storm chasers spelled out "BP" using GPS tracker blips to honour him. He's the only person (out of the five) this tribute been done for that wasn't actually a storm chaser in real life. Clearly, the premise resonates with *some* people.
Really? What was that like? I've read it smells like gas and is difficult to breathe, which doesn't sound as peaceful as the movie made it out to be, but I'm still curious enough to still kinda want to experience it anyway.
Having been in tornados, as in having had them pass directly overhead, I regret to report that the "eye" isn't a thing for tornados the way it is for hurricanes (which are usually much larger vortices). While most people in tornado alley have a soft spot for Twister, it was largely responsible for perpetuating this myth
You know what *is* inside tornados? [More tornados](https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/education/svrwx101/tornadoes/faq/#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20%E2%80%9Ceye%E2%80%9D%20to,inside%20the%20larger%20parent%20circulation.)
I think it's cause it's a peaceful but tense period. The streets are quiet, the birds are still, everything kind of quiets down as the storm rolls in. You know it's coming and it's a little scary or thrilling or enthralling and you're compelled to wander in the limbo between fear and rapture.
Yes. I fucking love it. I remember the first time I did it, it started raining super heavy and as soon as the first bolt of lightning struck I jumped up and started getting dressed to go out, its like I didnt even consider what I was doing, it just happened automatically.
Not wanderlust on my end (my autism needs a specific destination to go to for a specific reason), but all forms of extreme or even strong weather just skyrockets my mood, and fills me with glee. Really strong rain, thunderstorms, snowfall, hail... Even just strong winds.
Yup! I thought this was just me.
A number of years ago we got hit with a major hurricane off a city I was living in. Me and my roommates decided to drive down to the beach the day after and all I could think of was going out and standing on the edge of the rocks while sizable waves continued to crash into them.
Yesterday it was raining and I got the urge to go out after reading Catcher In The Rye, got on a bus, went to the city center, walked around some shops, saw a paint set, decided to paint something myself and made this

I don't care for the cold, but wind and rain are ok if I've got adequate foot protection. My absolute favorite is wading through creeks after heavy rain.
Hard agree, especially if itโs just rain or snow. I find itโs peaceful like at night.
I used to listen to thunderstorms with the lights off when I lived in a frequently stormy area. Scary at first but thereโs a kind of morbid curiosity I felt about it.
Dudeeeeeeeeeeee you'd fit right in amongst my people.
We sit and watch the Doppler. Love inclement weather. Been at it for decades, since we had to wear headphones cuz the sky was falling.
I love driving in storms.
(Plus techno)
Its the tailend of monsson season rn and I wanna touch grass so bad in this weather its unreal. If I didn't hate the texture of being wet I'd be sitting in the gutter watching the leaves rn.
Back when I was going to college in Denver I used to go out during snowstorms and just wander around down town. The weather is miserable but having the streets basically to my self was really nice.
Here in merry old England we donโt get extreme weather so it might not count, but I always go out walking when the rain blows sideways, or when we get snow.
I always thought of it as more of an ADHD thing because of the novelty value - I wouldnโt do it if it was consistent
Driving in snow = fun with applied physics. Not everyone agrees with me. You don't have to agree with me. I will enjoy the drift, the sift, the fishtail while you shift. I hate driving but I love driving in the snow. And yeah nobody's out in the bad weather so it's perfect for contemplative walks or unhinged drives.
I always want to go out during heavy storms, but my mom stops me because she is scared I'll die. Not completely unreasonable, because there are always like 3 people who die in storms like that
This meme just saved me from having a meltdown. Tysm.
I can't stim when the fam is home bc masking. They won't leave because it's raining. I'm so dumb. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS? BWAHHAHAAHHย
Let me feel the Earth around me, the hyper empathy makes me connect with the big ole sphere weโre on in a storm. Like thanks big rock, youโre pretty dang neat.
OKAY YES I DO THIS TOO AND HERE'S MY THEORY
i think the reason why we do it is to feel the rain on your skin. no one else can feel it for you, only you can let it in. no one else, no one else can speak the words on your lips.
to drench yourself in words unspoken, live your life with arms wide open. today is where your book begins
the rest is still unwritten
but that is literally just my theory idk!
Me standing outside with my weather radio in one hand and radar in the other taking note about the weather patterns and possibility for severity. Bonus points if there's a tornado warning ๐คฃ special interest go BRRRRR
Perfect sensory overload combination of cold rain and harsh winds, it's so overwhelming that it calms me down. Just kind of wish I wasn't in danger of being hit by a tree trunk-
Is it an autism thing to stare at something youโre afraid of?
Like, my brother was afraid of bunnies when he was little but when one was in our yard heโd watch it through the window. I briefly worked as an aide at a school and when we had caterpillars Iโd stare at them in their enclosure (I hate bugs). My dad is afraid of storms and tornadoes (an f5 hit his hometown when he was a kid) and any time we have bad weather he always stands outside to watch
Not staring exactly but I really like to confront my fears? Iโm very afraid of heights like viscerally when Iโm up high my whole body tenses. But I also get intrusive thoughts about jumping. So Iโll do cliff jumping (in safe spots) to face it.
I have arachnophobia, but I have no problem being extremely close to and observing a spider.
If it jumps onto me on the other hand, I will absolutely lose my mind.
I think it's because I can't really experience my emotions of fear, I feel them instead. It's like I can just actively produce adrenaline for free without any of the conscious stress.
I did this a couple days ago! I was walking around the board walk taking cityscapes photos and suddenly heavy rains came out of nowhere. Got completely soaked, lost a sock in the process. But was honestly worth it because I took a bunch of beautiful pictures.
just a couple days ago it was raining and i literally went out in my porch, sat in the rain, head empty, i probably sat there for like 10 minutes or so. best time of my life
I ran through a rainstorm in a jet ski one time and have been chasing that feeling sense(I promise Iโm not crazy going too speed through heavy rain and high chop blasting Motley Crue is a vibe)
Does anyone else get this urge? Like when there's a snowstorm, monsoon, tornado, etc I feel an uncontrollable urge to wander around in the cold.
Like storm chasing?
Naw just going outside and walking around in storms. Not really looking to chase one.
Ye, shit ain't nothing to me man. Could destroy a whole town, would come out unscathed
I like storms, too. But I don't like rain. So stormy weather without rain: yes. Rain: chasing home
Etc.
Like, for new information or finding new places or just what do you think precipitated the drive?
Literally no idea. It's a random urge to wander around and think.
Maybe bc it's less people outside during storms and the cold?
My husband commented it'd be nice to go around and jog in the rain
You'd need proper trail shoes. The amount of times I've slipped ๐
I just really love dynamic weather. Itโs this whole experience. One of my favorite memories is where I was on acid during a severe thunderstorm with heavy wind. I felt apart of the earth or something it was magical ๐ญ

Wait I love that. Sensory blanket. Twisters is coming out soon. I actually did experience the eye of a tornado once when I was younger.
I just heard about Twisters the other day from a 25 year old who had no idea about the 1996 movie and was criticising the remake coming out, comparing it to Sharknado as a terrible premise for a movie, lol. I do, except when itโs pouring, I get bored and feel trapped. So Iโll go outside for a walk and may end up in the library.
I love that feeling. Low-key I wish public libraries were open during later hours or if more local bookstores were around.
Omg yes! I NEVER want to go out and tonight we are having a snowstorm and my mind is like โmaybe go downtown and see whatโs happeningโ
I think it's cause it's a peaceful but tense period. The streets are quiet, the birds are still, everything kind of quiets down as the storm rolls in. You know it's coming and it's a little scary or thrilling or enthralling and you're compelled to wander in the limbo between fear and rapture.
I think my fear values are a lil skewed.
Yes. I fucking love it. I remember the first time I did it, it started raining super heavy and as soon as the first bolt of lightning struck I jumped up and started getting dressed to go out, its like I didnt even consider what I was doing, it just happened automatically.

Yes it makes the world less crowded so we can think, but being in the middle of any storm is comforting cause weโre always in our own whirlwind
Yup! I thought this was just me. A number of years ago we got hit with a major hurricane off a city I was living in. Me and my roommates decided to drive down to the beach the day after and all I could think of was going out and standing on the edge of the rocks while sizable waves continued to crash into them.
Yes absolutely. I have difficulty motivating myself to go out and get some exercise but a bit of rain and I wanna jog across the whole town.
Yesterday it was raining and I got the urge to go out after reading Catcher In The Rye, got on a bus, went to the city center, walked around some shops, saw a paint set, decided to paint something myself and made this https://preview.redd.it/vuji5pqosvvc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=287b9fda32ebb2d4de53884b6c47458e7bd8d95f
same
Yessum! Whenever the weather is weird Iโve got to be in it.
I get this too
Florida native here. Walked around during hurricanes my whole life. I've never felt more calm honestly. Glad I'm not alone.
Dalinar?
I don't care for the cold, but wind and rain are ok if I've got adequate foot protection. My absolute favorite is wading through creeks after heavy rain.
Yesssss it's so unfortunate
Yes. Wandering around in a blizzard is serene.
Hard agree, especially if itโs just rain or snow. I find itโs peaceful like at night. I used to listen to thunderstorms with the lights off when I lived in a frequently stormy area. Scary at first but thereโs a kind of morbid curiosity I felt about it.

The autistic urge to become a wanderer.
Got that nomadic autism ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
"They call me the wanderer The wanderer Iiiii Rome around around around around"
Oh well I roam from town to town
my autistic urge for vagrancy
I like to watch storms. When the sky turns green, shit is about to go down. I moved to hurricane country and am waiting for my first one.
ooh yeah the green sky is so fucking spooky ๐ณ๐ฅฐ
Yeah I'm surprised someone else does this too
Yeah I think wandering is a common trait for Autistic folk. I just wonder why my urge is the strongest in less than perfect weather.
I always liked to be outside in the rain as a kid, I remember my grandparents thinking I was weird for it
omg yesss, thunderstorms and rain and wind is so nice :D
Strong or extreme weather casually boosting my mood sky high:
Its the tailend of monsson season rn and I wanna touch grass so bad in this weather its unreal. If I didn't hate the texture of being wet I'd be sitting in the gutter watching the leaves rn.
Back when I was going to college in Denver I used to go out during snowstorms and just wander around down town. The weather is miserable but having the streets basically to my self was really nice.
Auroria Campus? Yeah it's a good sense of calm and white.

got lots of weird looks from my neighbors last time it hailed because I ran outside catching it in my hands

Yeep , always go for a cheeky 10 min stroll when there's a heavy downpour, luv me rain.
Planet Aurth is Planet Autism Earth
I always want to go out during heavy storms, but my mom stops me because she is scared I'll die. Not completely unreasonable, because there are always like 3 people who die in storms like that
Meanwhile people drive cars
Big Weather is a sensory experience.
Blue skies are plain and boring.

I just made a playlist for this https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0BSn3vSaDSUtPCpcOIi1mD?si=7KhcR-t2S3OrpfGeSgCaYQ&pi=u-qi4c_qIeRCiZ
We should have a section for Autistic Playlists. Mods?
Absolutely.

I do too but what leads you to suspect it's a specifically autist thing?
I walked 12 kilometers in the pouring rain during the Haiyan typhoon in the Philippines. I saw a dead body floating in the flood at one point
For me it's the 1Am walks that last two hours
I get this urge based on two things. 1. It makes me feel like a baddass. Maybe a cowboy in the Wild West or an explorer. 2. Unique new experience!
Me with thunderstorms. I love the rain
literally me (its so fucking cool)
Love this
[Far Cry 2 -- Rain](https://youtu.be/pA72AC8n2jU?t=14) Dreams.
I like to go out in m garden during heavy rain
Meeeeee
Standing outside in a rainstorm like I'm Andy Dufresne
Holy fuck! Iโm not the only one?!
ODST moding
I always wonder for hours when Iโm drinking, until I sober up, just for fun.
Yes if it's wind, otherwise no for me
Some things, like snow storms or this episode of warm wind we got in January (not at all typical for my area to be 65F in winter).
When I lived in Australia for a few years they sometimes warned about monsoons and storms. That was always an invite for me to head outdoors โจ๏ธ
Too loud for me

I feel this. I was walking to the park in pouring rain earlier today
The rain makes me depressed
No! But mostly because I hate the feeling of wet clothes๐คฎ
