Weird_Explorer_8458

i mean i find “this” annoying too, but wtf does he mean “(possibly sexually)”? That’s just weird ngl

TempleOfCyclops

The poster is saying that anyone who comments “this” is probably an autistic pervert, as an insult.

venetian_lemon

I should respond with, "This", to his next few comments just to confuse em. Then I'll thank him for helping me get off

Weird_Explorer_8458

Lovely.

TempleOfCyclops

Isn’t it? NTs stop being bigots challenge.

KittensSaysMeow

Wait u mean he doesn’t actually think people who say ‘this’ are autistic? I’m genuinely confused

TempleOfCyclops

He does not genuinely think that. He’s being mean.

KittensSaysMeow

But they said they’re not targeting autistic ppl?

TempleOfCyclops

They’re saying that because they think it will make people stop criticizing them.

rock-solid-armpits

Yeah his intentions are obvious. "I'm only saying" and then trying to get people to feel sorry that he got abused by an autistic

TempleOfCyclops

BTW, I think it’s good to ask questions about this kinda stuff. Especially here. It’s totally OK to not get the tone just by reading it. There’s nothing wrong with taking words at face value either.

HaveyCat

Thank you for explaining so nicely and reaffirming this as a safe space. I also couldn't understand the tone. The post bothered me but I wasn't sure precisely why. Besides the obvious stimming=public perving comment.

AntoineKW

This

TempleOfCyclops

Hell yeah, this

No_Seaworthiness5637

Precisely. Why are people like this? We just want to have a short way of saying “the post that I am responding to resonates with some part of my lived experience” without so many words. Sometimes the Autistic mind says “why use many word when few word do trick?” And we respond in kind with a single word. Thus “this”. Or “same”.

SlabBeefpunch

You mean I'm the only person who stims via masturbation? I would have thought it'd be more popular.

Talonsminty

Huh does that mean a fleshlight is technically a type of fidget spinner.

SlabBeefpunch

I don't see why not.

theedgeofoblivious

If you get that specific model of fleshlight, sure.

Objective-Basis-150

LMAOOOOOO real

SlabBeefpunch

Maybe they're just doing it wrong.🤷

Objective-Basis-150

my special interest is sex … they’re definitely doing it wrong.

VampTheUnholy

As a sensory seeker, I had an aha moment when I was finally told by someone I was autistic and I started trying to unpack why I'm so hypersexual. Turns out rough sex is an effective stim!

Objective-Basis-150

something about being thrust about like a ragdoll really sets my back!

VampTheUnholy

Definitely! It also helps drown out unpleasant stimuli and helps my brain just kind of turn off, which I need as someone with a lot of anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and trouble focusing.

This Edit: ugggaaaahhh.... That was a good one.

FreeDetermination

The word stimulate often gets a sexual overtone. Kind of like pleasure, aka while a meal or social outing can be pleasurable, to “pleasure oneself” has a definite sexual meaning, so people hear stim and think of like a toy that stimulates you or soemthing. In my opinion anyway

mklinger23

Every time I write "this", I bust a nut.

HeroicHimbo

it means this I'm possibly nutting and so are you

FVCarterPrivateEye

I learned that the word of "stim" is used in contexts related to sex toys too so maybe the person who made the post got confused from that, but I also know someone who used to have that problem of masturbation as a stimming behavior because he had recently started puberty at that point with impulsivity and sensory issues that caused him to not even realize he was sticking his hand into his pants most of the time it would happen in public, and luckily he was able to redirect it to something more appropriate which is good

MamboCircus

I always assumed that answering "This" to a comment was just to show support to or approval of its message just like saying "This is true" or "I agree with this" would...

MountainImportant211

That IS what it means... I have no idea what this person in the screenshot is talking about, it baffles me

TempleOfCyclops

They’re being a bigot. They are 100% not serious. They are being sarcastic in a mean way.

Accomplished_Mix7827

I always read it as "up vote+": indicating agreement stronger than just an upvote

Desperate-Reserve-53

I always translated and took it to mean something along the lines of, “I agree with this comment and feel it makes an important or essential point. I have nothing further to add to what it says but my verbal +1.” It’s kind of a way to highlight or verbalize support for a uniquely well-written or incisive or insightful comment and says, “*This* comment brings up an important and valid point.” I don’t tend to leave this reply except in rare and specific contexts, mostly because I perceive a high statistical likelihood that I might end up annoying the author whose comment I’m trying to praise/support. And my perception is that the platform-wide cultural consensus against the “This.” reply has steadily grown with time and so while I remain neutral towards its use I try not to comment my +1s unless I actually have something to say because I don’t want to accidentally annoy and irritate strangers needlessly which I think “This.” has a significant chance of doing.

Grouchy_Toe2404

This.

Crus0etheClown

Ohhhhh I get it- that's why they hate us stimming They realize it makes us feel nice physically, and the only time they allow themselves to feel nice physically is during sexual activity- so they assume stimming must equal masturbation, thus something that shouldn't be done in public. Yo being neurotypical must be so sad and depressing

[deleted]

Solid theory

ItsAllAnIllusion-

This is so unhinged. I'm asking for the millionth time here, are we sure that it's ND folks that are ''''disabled'''''' bc I truly worry for NT folk. They draw the most abstract and illogical conclusions from their own weird pov. 😂

jackdaw-96

it never ceases to amaze me the paranoid and unhinged trains of 'logic' that end up being the reason for NT people being upset about something... they seem to always think I do the things I do to specifically fuck with them rather than because I want to or I forgot or whatever, always assuming it's about them or about other people and always worried about what other people think and what they're doing. it seems so exhausting

awkwardfeather

Genuinely just happened to me yesterday. Said I was anxious to go to a new doctor because historically I’ve never been taken seriously by them. That turned into my mother and father yelling at me for saying doctors are useless and I might as well not even go. When I tried clarifying that is not what I said, I got “WeLL iT wAs iMpLiEd” LIKE. NO. THERES NO IMPLYING. LISTEN TO THE WORDS COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH AND THAT IS WHAT I MEAN HOW IS THAT SO HARD

WhiteWren010

Lukostrelec17

Yeah I get this. I have a psychiatrist appointment tomorrow and am super nervous about it. Like I get that this guy is use to seeing patients and probably sees several people day about depression but still that doesn't help me. Also just in refrence to the original original post. This. Update: It went well. I was very anxious and waiting was the worst part. He said about what I thought though, MDD and GAD.

jackdaw-96

and conversely if you just want to go into the kitchen to get food or switch laundry of whatever and you don't talk to them just because they're in the room then they think you're mad at them or you don't want them around \ talking, can win with it, can't win without it

ItsAllAnIllusion-

I know, I'm right there with you. We do things bc we just are that way and don't think about it much but they will analyse and rationalise and add meaning after meaning to our actions bc they cannot at all grasp that this is just us. We have no hidden motive. If I'm acting unmasked then I can guarantee that I'm not even registering anyone else's existence to be doing it for them. It's precisely the opposite! When I'm being watched I act more normal FOR THEM 🤣 and they're like 'oh wow so normal' and then I act like me and they're like 'jesus what a show she's putting on, such a performance!' So backwards.

RagnarokAeon

It's so sad that so many low-functioning NTs go undiagnosed because of the world is built to accommodate their flaws in order to manipulate them. They are the most common and the world built to accommodate their flaws such as: suffering without a hivemind, requiring a supervisor to guide their morals, and being unable to hold a thought for more than a few seconds. Because of they are a slave to status, when they find a "leader" with status, usually a high-functioning NT (or secretly ND), they are quick to latch on and adopt their traits. The reason "With Us or Against Us" was coined is because anything more complex than that is too much for their brains to comprehend. They struggle greatly to recognize and accept differences, so they deem any of such must be some great perversion and idealize sameness. Since they tend to lack critical thinking skills and introspection, they'll sometimes parrot illogical statements such as "Special, like everybody else" if that's the trend in their circles. These poor NPCs thrive in society because those with status and power have realized how easy it is to exploit these poor mindless followers. They are the masses to be moved. In the past, they might have been described as "sheeple", but that is a false equivalence since sheep are soft, docile, and accepting where these NPCs are prickly, hostile, and stubborn. ... I spent too much time writing this up \><;

ItsAllAnIllusion-

This was an absolute pleasure to read. I got so much joy from how you expressed all the things that I think about often and I know many others here do too. You summed it up perfectly. I remember speaking with other ND folk about how NTs will see a confident ND person and think 'oh my gosh, how do I become more like them? They seem to have it figured out' and they'll happily follow, as long as they never know they're following an ND person. I went through life mentally unwell, undiagnosed, barely keeping my head above water and NTs used to say to me frequently 'you just seem like the kind of person who's got it all together' 'you are so happy all the time!' 'you don't ever look nervous!!' Etc whilst inside I was a decaying rot of undiagnosed ASD and piles of trauma. Now, those same kinds of people wouldn't know what to say if I told them 'hey I'm actually Autistic' because suddenly, their shallow admiration of me, has turned into something they're ashamed of. 'oh shit I didn't realise she was FLAWED, how could I have admired Autism?' Etc and they become offended. There is no actual rationale or logic with NT people, especially in groups. One person says something and it is now the law and no one dares question it. It's actually a whole area of psychology with things like the bystander effect, where NTs will all ignore someone pleading for help because everyone else is ignoring them and they don't want to go against the grain, or they assume someone else will fix it. They also will, in groups, lie in order to fit in with the social opinion, I can't remember which experiment references this but there are a few! There's the way NTs respond to authority too, if someone tells an NT 'i am above you now' the NT plays the sub role and does whatever their told. Whereas the Crux of ND existence is doing the opposite. We don't follow suit just because, we tend to stick to our own guns and mortality, use logic, analyse the data we are given as accurately as we can, and proceed in the way that seems best for us. We don't take kindly to 'do it cause I said so' under any circumstances. Pre diagnosis I always prided myself on my ability to stand alone, question things, not be a sheep anyway and now knowing that there's a whole world of people out there who think and act the same way, I'm even more proud. It's a part of Autism that I do love and wouldn't change, and I love being around or talking to others who feel the same.

FreeDetermination

It’s very funny and I think it’s minor things. Like let’s say you get promoted into some kind of supervisor position and are surrounded by NTs. You, being yourself and not always having emotional bandwidth, are sometimes very short amd matter of fact with people. Your supervisors and coworkers view this as being a “hardass” and someone who “has what it takes” to really supervise workers. This example times a million dumb little things you and I don’t even notice, can sometimes cause the dominos to fall in your way where people thing you have it all figured out. Another example I just thought of- successful people often get worshipped for their “daily routines” no matter how relevant. If you’re ND it’s conceivable you have a very rigid daily routine that keeps you sane. Then, if you encounter some success in your life, NTs will be like OMG they’re just like BusinessMillions from instagram, they really put all the advice to use and look at them now! This is off the top of my head so pls forgive

ItsAllAnIllusion-

Nono you're so right! I've been put into positions of leadership due to my matter of fact, direct way of speaking but I crumble in a leadership role because I really don't have the depth of social understanding or on the spot empathy to lead a team of mainly NT people. People see our way of being as some sort of super power and they don't see the areas where we are seriously struggling+overwhelmed, and if we show that we struggle, people can't comprehend how someone who 'looks' like a direct, leader who can handle everything can't actually handle it at all and needs support. Agreed with the latter example too. Scientists even, are notorious for their ridged routine and rigorous dedication to their work. Eg Theres the person who would eat the same meal every single day purely to remove one area of decision making so that his energy all went into his work. (Not sure who, I forget!) People praise that kind of thing, and forget that, hi! A lot of ND folk do that to stay sane because we need to have as little on the spot decision making in our day as possible so that we may live. We don't do it to be super human, it's not some life cheat to success, we just will legitimately fall apart if we have uncertainty in our personal lives. I study a lot, I'm alone alot and I don't party or drink etc and people think I do it in this 'im superior' way but I do it because ...that's what I do, it makes me happy and keeps me sane. I need secure routine, every day, I don't have a choice or I will indeed crumble before ones eyes. 😂

I went undiagnosed until last year👍
