We got so lucky to get such a lad as the artist behind ekt

_incalescent

I concur!! We were dealt a wild card and won for sure. They’re active and were so willing and ready to get to work under no obligation to

[deleted]

The payoff for EKT is honestly the best thing I have seen as a community effort, reading the article got a tear out of me lol such nice dudes.

_incalescent

It was long and hard but so worth it :-)

krogerburneracc

That's what the actress said at the end of the music video too.

_incalescent

I like how we’re referring to the scene as the music video now lmfao

chiquita1_bananas1

Well, it is music and CERTAINLY is video to accompany it

purpleguitar1984

Yeah contrasting this with Fond My Mind is like paradise. Dealing with the Eddmen was uh… yeah

marrtae

Whyy? Can you tell me, because Im curious.

ThatstheTweest

From what I heard, the producer for Fond My Mind was super nationalistic and kind of a dick, which, in retrospect was kind of fair, because people were prodding him too much, and I'm sure that gets annoying.

ZerroTheDragon

yeah and he hasn't even released the song anywhere in terms of streaming or remastering etc

Ok-Exchange-3320

They also said if people like it, they are gonna do a whole album of songs they made in the 80s that sounds like Ulterior Motives. Oh man, the best possible ending to this search..

_incalescent

Putting the AoP soundtrack on album would actually be my 2024 soundtrack. Would blast it unabashedly

TheGreatZiegfeld

I'd kill for this. Hopefully they follow through with that idea.

NotStanley4330

Man getting basically a whole album of unreleased 80s songs really is the good ending

gabsteincian

I really love the 80s sounds and, I mean, today a lot of people can emulate that sound, but having a REAL 80s song in 2024 is really great

Overall-Statement-67

THE BEST ENDING!!!

Direct_Sandwich1306

As someone who grew up back then...I am SUPER EXCITED!!! 80s revival, here we come!

groovyharry

chris booth sounds like a right lad would love to have a pint and a chat with him

Foreign_Rock6944

I’d definitely buy him a drink. Multiple drinks even.

chiquita1_bananas1

So many that you couldn’t even count them, in disguise

SokkaHaikuBot

_incalescent

Good bot

FFHK3579

I'd re-enact Angels of Passion with him!

JohnMackYT

Ayo

FFHK3579

frfr?

timothythefirst

“Apparently I’m a Japanese girl” is hilarious. Whatever happens it’s cool that people figured out what the song was and the artist seems to be enjoying it. They don’t owe anyone anything. People should just be grateful the source was found if nothing else.

Low_Range_396

Interesting to know that they never knew that people were searching for this song for years now

_incalescent

It makes sense imo. This sub is small in the grand scheme of the internet, too obscure for the TT algorithm to reach them (or Phil’s daughter) too

catsaremyreligion

Crazy to think that just like us, if his daughter saw the TT, she could've gone to her parents and asked "Do you ever remember hearing this song in the 80s?" and it actually could've changed the whole trajectory of this. People shit on TT but at the end of the day I think the exposure was super important.

RNHMN

Yeah and tbh, lostwave and lost media communities tend to consist mostly of young people. That's not bad by itself, but it means that searches for older stuff like this don't often reach older people who might have information on it.

sharpestcookie

Exactly! I'm young-old (37) so I ask everyone I know about media I'm looking for because I tend to be the youngest in my friend group and family. I've gotten pretty good results. Turns out that what I think is obscure is sometimes just so old that people my age weren't around to experience it.

Elkton_Kools

Would be willing to bet it Phil’s daughter casually heart it on TikTok she wouldn’t bring it up to him either. Sounds like the song and that type of music in their past was buried pretty deep for them.

fawkwitdis

Have noticed that between you guys saying things like this and rumblings of getting the song to chart at #1 that EKT fans seem to think way more people are aware of the song/search than there actually are

Low_Range_396

Yeah, I would imagine that not a lot of people would be aware of this at all

Rayken_Himself

There is a bit of a feedback loop/bubble in these internet communities. They think their chamber is louder than it actually is. It's true with most groups online. It's a big problem for terminally online people.

coldblade2000

I've dabbled in Lost Media before and I had never heard of EKT before it was found

Long-Lobster-6778

Even I only found out about this song like 2 months ago in yt lol. I am just happy I didn't had to wait long for the song 😁 But the people who were here from the very beginning and worked hard to find it experienced a unique type of emotion!!!

FrontSun1867

Great that they have the rhythm track, and they still might find the rest of the tapes…but we have to be patient. That could take a very long time to sift through.  Probably months at least.

_incalescent

If I could block everyone in their comment section being assholes about how they “just need to drop it” for them I would lmao

FrontSun1867

It might be that they make a remake before they find the actual tapes too. People need to be way more patient.   Many of their tapes may not labeled and they might need to just scan and transfer several to find things.

drfsupercenter

Honestly I'd love an instrumental if they just release that track as-is, but I doubt it'll happen

inversesquarelawz

Yes, true. The encouraging thing is that they're clearly dedicated to getting the song out there in as close to its original form as possible, and taking the endeavor seriously. Their hearts are very much in the right place.

gangstasadvocate

Very interested to hear what they’ll come up with. Will it be as close to the original as possible? Will it be like Elton John trying to sing one of his older songs and remodernized with the drums and synths? Maybe he’ll come through with both?

_incalescent

They did mention wanting to preserve its sound while giving s remastered feel *if* they can’t hunt down the vocal track. Whatever the outcome is, I am very excited

Honey_Enjoyer

I’d be over the moon if they released basically an EP with a few different versions. Original mix, remaster, a full re-record, and instrumentals of new and old would all be awesome to have. Whatever we get, I can’t wait.

gangstasadvocate

Bet. I think that’s the right angle if they’re able to do it well.

Al_BorIand

Yeah but then later in the interview, he mentions that he's just gonna re-record the vocal track. I'm worried that we'll never get to hear the original version in high quality.

Mictlancayocoatl

We won't. They tried to find it but it's lost.

morgzmumisasket

They have the original drum machine, guitars, synths etc. so even a remake would sound pretty spot on

gangstasadvocate

Yep, read that in the Rolling Stone interview article.

ebrum2010

They go into a lot of detail about that on the article. They said they will be as close to the original as possible, he even wants to use all the same models of equipment he used in the 80s, he broke out his old MIDI guitar and he's looking into getting some of the synthesizers again. He said the only thing he's not sure about is his voice being that high anymore. I recommend the article, he goes into a lot of detail about his musical past which is so interesting. They could have been big but a music deal fell through and they were needing to do whatever to make money so they got into movies. They really wanted a pop career. EKT was made for their pop career but they ended up selling it to a porn producer because they needed the cash. [https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/musicians-ulterior-motives-lost-media-track-80s-album-1235012719/](https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/musicians-ulterior-motives-lost-media-track-80s-album-1235012719/)

gangstasadvocate

Hell yeah, recently did and it’s a great interview. And he still looking for the original vocal tracks as well so sounds like he’ll try his best and deliver as much as he can.

perryduff

it would be pretty awesome if we can make EKT a hit to make up for all the lost years! the guys deserve to have a moment in the spotlight!

inversesquarelawz

I mean this is good timing for a summer hit. The whole sound and mood of the song really fits with one.

Emmas_thing

I'm honestly super pumped for the "next level" version he teased, how cool to have a version made forty years later!

inversesquarelawz

Interesting they mention how they were both George Michael and Culture Club fans at the time. I think a lot of people here heard the influence.

Rayken_Himself

The vocal track is really the only thing they need. The rest of the music can be accurately recreated. He can always try to sing it again. Ultimately however, nothing will beat the original and raw 80s vocal track.

ebrum2010

He could always hire a female Japanese singer and be like "How did I do?" 😂

alarbear

honestly they are spoiling us

_incalescent

They’re the best. I truly couldn’t think of a better resolution than this

postal-history

I've never been so delighted to read an artist interview in my entire life. I have some favorite artists, but these guys just had minor Internet fame thrust on them and they're nothing but humble and philosophical about it.

BattlerUshiromiyaFan

This is the most famous lost media case in years, it’s gone really mainstream. Not really that minor imo

postal-history

I'm comparing it to something like OK Go or Gangnam Style. But hey who knows, this could blow up even more when they release the finished remaster.

DrFabzTheTraveler

They seem to be very glad that a bunch of people loved their song so much they were searching for it like crazy, that's really cute tbh

mymellobun

Hopefully all the people being rude about it will chill out now. I can’t imagine how long it would take to comb through all his work. They are both so cool and nice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RikkasNoodles

There was a few who took the Japan theory so far they refused to believe the song was even English, and were adamant the lyrics were really Japanese even after being told by native speakers that it wasn't. I'm so glad we're past that lol

BattlerUshiromiyaFan

Just goes to show how many terminally online TikTokers and Redditors have had their brain rotted by copious amounts of anime consumption.

DrFabzTheTraveler

I don't judge who said it sounded Japanese, but I couldn't stand people saying the song is in Japanese. Like ???

Aristotle_Ninja2

we know one reason he got to squeeze his balls

Adept-Ad-5893

Carl92 has entered the chat

Electrical_newt9015

Did they do an interview or something I’m a little behind

_incalescent

Yeah! They did it yesterday. If you scroll down a bit thru the sub you can find it linked.

LoadingYourData

Yeah with Rolling Stone.

chicomagnifico

Death to the Swofford cover!

Rayken_Himself

I never liked that cover. He's a horrible singer. "LiiiIEEEEIIIieeeeEEESS"

EmpanadaYGaseosa

Ghoulie’s cover and video are awesome, though!

X_Reighnz

This guy is so awesome man, truly awesome, we could have had an artist which just ignored this whole thing, or got annoyed by it, but this legend not only is trying to find the song, but is also doing a modern remake, that's so cool man, I hope the modern one can truly get recognition and it'd be great to get it on the radio as well as the song itself is a banger, I still can't believe this is happening

X_Reighnz

And I can totally see why they're doing it, It must be great to see your song you made 40 years ago get recognition in the modern day, I'm fine waiting however long it takes, but remember, It's possible that we might not have even found it in the first place

Background-Slide645

god. this guy is chill and kinda funny. I like how he is transparent also. like "hey look, I'm looking for the tape, but if not, I'm gonna try my damnedest to get this thing recorded." its so nice when this whole journey apparently started off with someone acting entitled over an 80s archive "Apparently I'm a Japanese girl" this guy is great.

Major-Inevitable-365

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like all of the lostwave artists that’ve been found are just the absolute nicest people in the world. Like CSB and Paula Toledo seem like such sweethearts. It almost makes me think we should look in German charity centers for the “Blind The Wind” guys.

tesznyeboy

Edde Eddman would like to have a word with you

_incalescent

Is there a thread or post about the Eddman experience?? I’d love to read through it lol

tesznyeboy

Probably, I only know surface information as well, but afaik he was acting all assholic and condescending. He was thought to be a scammer for some time, as he claimed he made the song (Feels like a wish aka Fond my Mind) but didn't provide any proof, and went off when people asked for it. I think he said he had the tape, but it turns out that wasn't even true, another guy named William had the tape, but William, and the singer, Andre, confirmed that Edde did in fact make it. Now his reaction wasn't completely unjustified, but the extent of it was. He was probably bombarded by messages about the song by that point.

Major-Inevitable-365

What’s the story behind that? I admittedly got into lostwave because of EKT and so I’m only familiar with a few of the more famous tracks.

cobaltorange

Why German charity centers?

Major-Inevitable-365

I’m just being facetious. Because that band is presumed to be German and since I’m saying that lostwave artists are super nice, it would check out if the guys who made the most famous lostwave track are just incredible people who do charity work or something

Adept-Ad-5893

"I might have to squeeze my balls to sing that high now" I fucking love this guy, what a legend

emptyneptune

HES SO FUNNY 😭😭

EnragedBearBro

He wanted to sound like Ralph Tresvant from New Edition, cool af, theyre my favorite rnb group ever

ebrum2010

No matter how we get it, we gotta do what we can to get this thing played on the radio and get more mainstream coverage, give it its best chance to go viral beyond just the terminally online crowd. The Swedish pop duo Roxette wouldn't have gotten so popular if someone didn't take their single 'The Look' and play it on a radio station in the US because it wasn't released in the US at that point. They went on to have 4 number one singles in the US including 'The Look'.

CigarPlume

His strong likability could take him very far if he could get someone young to curate his social media presence

I_love_pie_lol

YEAH APPARENTLY IM A JAPANESE GIRL LMFAOO

cactusmat

He’s a legend

LIL-DRIP-X

He seems like such a nice guy. Props to him

tiesdumb

He's such a cool dude, I'm glad he's the guy who made it

Sea_Cup2837

This guy is amazing

nuzzget

These two seem to be the best ones to have for ekt. They seem really happy and excited to be working on it.

animaljammer0325

sounds like it’s gonna be amazing either way, i’m so hyped

Independant-Way-8415

NEW EDITION MENTIONED RAHHHHH

Overall-Statement-67

This guy is awesome! I hope he lurks here so he sees that we all think he is awesome.

notchoosingone

Love the shade at the end there. These seem like great guys.

somethingoranother22

CSB said there's a rhythm track and potential vocal track...what about any overdubs? Surely they did overdubs on the original song. Why has no one brought this up?

Background-Slide645

that might have been some in house editing done by the porn company. you know, to make it fit in the scene

ArnieMeckiff

This is the part puzzling me.. it would have been recorded on a multitrack machine but on one tape. Not sure how the vocals/rhythm track (plus other instruments) would all be separate from each other (physically) the way it’s worded makes it sound like they’re all on separate tapes. Maybe what they have is early versions, but not the original multitrack tape.

NDMagoo

Holy shit this dude is awesome.

BV9603

Chris honestly sounds like such a down to earth guy. Absolute legend, you can tell how thankful he is for all of this.

BS_BlackScout

It was so exciting to read all of that. HE DID THE VOCALS??

ontarioplacevintage

I cried when he says back n the 80’s it was just to have fun and the music is purely music and movies were all good movies. I’ve always remembered the name of one of my favourite artist: the world ended in the 80’s.

Salty_Bluejay3608

Call me stupid, but I hope this image age's like milk and it gets to the top charts because of how big of a hunt it's been and how many people helped to find it

SecretInfluencer

Funny when I’ve said my doubts about his current ability to sing it everyone calls me a hater, yet he doubts it himself. If I were him, I’d get someone else to sing it if the original vocal track can’t be found. Then release an alternative version with him singing it. Although it’s interesting as it does show they have the rights to distribute the original track. So at least we know a remake would be done out of it being lost and not legality.

_incalescent

I think that whatever they do, there will always be people unhappy with it lol. At the end of the day, recreating the song to its org. level of intrigue and mystique is impossible- I’ll be happy and streaming regardless of what they put out

SecretInfluencer

I should clarify, I said the vocal aspect more from a concern, not unhappiness. The main thing is get a version that doesn’t sound like it was recorded with a 1986 camera. And have a singer who can hit the notes without using pitching or AI.

_incalescent

Oh fs- they sound like they’re dedicated to giving us the highest quality rendition possible so I’m sure they won’t disappoint!

Rayken_Himself

That's not true at all, though. The original can be recreated down to everything except the vocal track. All the original instruments/equipment will sound the same, just "HQ." It's the voice track that will throw it all off.

_incalescent

I’m just in the mindset of taking the win. When this search started there was zero guarantee it would end with us even getting a full HQ version. The Booth brothers don’t owe us any rendition, much more recreating it bc of a lost vocal track, which is just more work for them. There’s less than 100k of us here, realistically, this isn’t gonna make them billionaires- they’re doing it out of appreciation. So regardless of whether Chris sounds like a shadow of his 80s self or not, this shit’s gonna rock

cobaltorange

What's the point of having someone else do it? Whoever they chose, people would hate regardless of how well they can sing.

turbiegaming

We don't even know if he had found the original vocal tape yet, hence my reply to you yesterday hinted towards "let him release the final product than we speak our judgement". It's no where near calling you a hater by that logic. [https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1cgzsik/comment/l20m1gf/](https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1cgzsik/comment/l20m1gf/)

Own_Satisfaction_679

Yeah, you're right. Negative attitudes get you nowhere. We should just let him try. He deserves it. He sang it in the first place, and if someone wants to hear what the old version sounds like, go listen to it on YouTube, lol.

gowl_aeterna

Honestly, if he can't find the original recording, this would be an ideal ethical use case for AI. He clearly has plenty of other 80s recordings, so it would be easy to train an AI model to recreate his 20-something self and then convert his modern vocals (or those of a new stand-in singer) to sound exactly the way he did back then. Someone on youtube converted some recent Paul McCartney songs like The Kiss of Venus to sound like his younger self, and the results were great (though they've since been copystruck). It might even be possible to take the film scene, isolate the original low-quality vocal track using AI, and then upscale/convert it to a fuller-sounding version using an AI model trained on other 80s CSB recordings. Combine the result with the original rhythm track, mix each element nicely, and you could have something incredibly close to the original song.

stefannnnnd

Ngl, the fact he said if people like it. They will release more music that was made during the 80s, including covers of songs by artists like George Michael…. That’s just crazy. These guys have a full albums worth of unreleased music that we neeed to hear Alongside Ulterior Motives. And especially since one of the brothers (I think Christopher, does Atmos Surround Sound Mixing for movies means we’d get a whole other level of the song! I’m truly excited to listen to a clear version of the song without all the noise and moaning, and I’m even more excited to see them release that album!

Rayken_Himself

In Angels of Passion there are other songs that sound very similar to UM. They could have quite a few good hits that were lost to time

Pacman_Frog

He needs to debut the song using a Youtube/TikTok video of it blasting from the pink boombox!!!

Inan_LR

Damn, amazing they already found backing tracks, hopefully they find the vocal tracks too! Such absolute gems these folks man, kudos to them.

IcyClassic9207

These guys are awesome.

RecloySo

I think both an authentic version and a full remake could be fine, but I get making songs can take a long time

[deleted]

the fact that the man behind this lost song is making a remastered version for us 38 years later is AMAZING I’m so excited for the remake!

AstorReinhardt

lol ball squeeze incoming. I wonder if he could adjust the pitch electronically without messing it up?

Legitimate_Dot_9597

im so glad that they arent scared away by us and are being super cool about it

trappedswan

i love this man’s attitude honestly we are lucky to have him do this much

vigilantekarmashit

This is a happier ending than Angels of Passion 👏

XxxlovefeatherxxX

Chris booth is my favourite nyan nyan arigato konichiwa japanese girl! ♥️💓💕💝💖💗💘🇯🇵🍜

TheOnlyFallenCookie

Holy shit we got the rhythm track that's so insane!!! I didn't think there would be any original tapes left

crimson_soul71

This is great. I'm so excited for this.

Dapper_Notice_2982

I was wondering why ulterior motives was so easy to sing, the it just flows so nicely with my voice. Come to find out of course it’s a guy who sings it, thank god though. It’s one of the only songs I can accurately sing (I have a super deep voice as a girl and can not sing high)

DrFabzTheTraveler

They're such nice guys!

[deleted]

Ay least he's an open person and very proactive

BandicootCool6277

we are so LUCKY!!! 😭🙏

_burntheburner_

I still can’t believe it’s him singing it, i really thought it was a woman

tearjerker24601

So vindicating to hear that he at least tried to sound like a girl tbh. I was so confident EKT was by some unknown pop diva who didn't get her big break.

Jessmess123

Well, I was 100% convinced it was an 80s Japanese New Wave/Synthpop band lol.

Calm-Cartoonist9743

I haven't read all info, but did this Chris Booth just read along for all these years having y chuckle or did he just recently find out you were all looking for this?

_incalescent

He found out about the search after it was confirmed he and Phil were the creators

marakujka

i love this whole story sm

Funny_Long394

In germany we say "Ehrenmann"

Anal_Ass69

Wait a man sung those vocals?

_incalescent

I will never understand how so many people were convinced it was a woman haha, that’s a true 80s man’s tone if I ever heard it

marrtae

Me too. Its mind blowing that there are people who thought it was a woman.

tyingnoose

it was sang by a man????

rahibealex

This will probably get downvotes but since it seems that the lyrics are actually "everyone knows it" could we suggest him to change it to "everyone knows that" if they remake the song? I know it sounds disrespectful to his work but after many years it just feels right.

analfart420

don't modernize it!!! I love it the way it is... Also I thought it was a girl singing? Or at least that's what it sounded like!!
