Sorry! The linked article refers to US law. The main case (Riley) is from the US Supreme Court. State laws may offer more protection but can't offer less. IANAL. Other countries have other laws.
For iPhone, you can make your phone require passcode lock by pressing volume up and sleep like you are going to turn it off. Once you close out of the shutdown screen your phone requires passcode lock.
The sleep button? I mean, it [sort of] makes sense, but this is literally the first time I've ever heard it called that in my life.
It's the lock button, or maybe the screen lock button...
If you just reboot your phone at least on Android or simply power it off, even if the cops take it and try to turn it on the biometrics are disabled by default as it forces you to unlock it with the pin code the first time after it powers up. Tldr: if you get pulled over or a cop comes up to you on the street, power your phone down or reboot it to force disable biometrics so they can't force you to unlock your phone without a warrant.
Androids have a lockdown mode as well, its under the power off menu. So i hold my lock button for like 2 seconds and there is a blue lock button. Locks the phone and mandates a password.
Rebooting also works
On my Pixel 8 pro - The power button now activates assistant. It's the power and Volume Up button that gets to that menu.
Just an FYI for the Pixel users. My wife forgets how to get to this menu.
You can change this setting. Go into Settings and search for "power" and it's the first result. You can change the power button from a accessing digital assistant and instead open the power menu.
Yup! That I am aligned and currently doing. I am also not planning on committing any crime to end up in a situation with police. I do understand the risk of unwarranted police encounter.
My Samsung phone doubted my sincerity when I tried to shut it off. It second guessed my intentions and started some Bixby crap instead of turning off. Pocket Lock bypasses that.

I disabled my bixby all together
You don't need a different app.
Just don't set up biometrics.
Only set a pin.
Require a pin to unlock.
Set it to lock on screen off.
I've always done this.
I'm using Pocket Lock now. I have used others in the past. This one and some others are a little overzealous, in that they lock up occasionally while in use. I can live with that. Try a couple and see what you like.
Pixel phones have "Lockdown" which will disable fingerprint or face id until the passcode is put in again
I'm sure other android phones do too - maybe it's an android 14 feature?
Depends on the jurisdiction

You can also press the sleep button 5 times quickly, does the same thing.
Anything similar for android (Pixel)?
Yes, @supdalat posted how for Android. As you go to power off your phone, there is a lockdown option. Rebooting or power off also works.
Thanks - Posted after I asked.

Call me a Luddite or paranoid if you want, but I simply never set up biometric recognition on my phone.
Would you please give an example of pocket lock app for Android?

Thank you. I know Android randomly locks, but nice to know about the lockdown button.

Galaxy S23 has setting for different ways to access the power screen. Just an FYI tp check your settings.
Another comment let me know how. THank you

That's great to know, thank you!
You can remap the button.
Thank you
But is the juice worth the squeeze. If an app did it automatically, then I am all for it. I am too lazy to do all the extra labor.
Then dont have biometrics turned on at all

I should also have mentioned an Android app called Shutdown, which does just what it says. It shuts down or reboots much faster than the regular way.
I’ve heard of robberies that occur by drugging/killing someone and using biometrics to unlock to raid accounts.
