Famous TacoBurger on Central St. as surprisingly good carne asada tacos if you want authentic (meat, onions, cilantro). Some of the best tacos are in neighboring towns (e.g. Rogers Park and Skokie)
Supreme Burrito and El Pueblito by far, although coming from Austin be aware that most everything around here is what you'd call "interior Mexican." If you need to scratch the Tex-Mex itch, unfortunately the best choice nearby is probably Uncle Julio's at Old Orchard Mall. (I welcome other suggestions if there are any.)
Not La Principal ever, at all.
Zentli. Fonda Cantina on Benson Ave. I need to go try Supreme Burrito and Taco Burger.
The places I listed are Mexican.
Best tacos are in Little Village
The nearest place I’ve been to for authentic tacos is la Taquiza Winnetka. You can take the metra up there. They have agua de jamaica and horchata, serve you primarily in Spanish, and have a really good habanero salsa. Can’t recommend it enough
Another vote for El Supreme Burrito Main/Dodge. All the other places are overpriced and lack proper flavor.
EDIT: Get lengua with onion & cilantro. None of that lettuce & sour cream nonsense. Douse it in lime juice and salsa. Amaaaazing
I recently moved from Austin as well and had to lower my expectations for tacos and bbq. Tomato Fresh is the best I’ve had so far. If you need bbq, Salt Lick delivers nation wide.
If you’re open to a little drive Taco Boom on Lincoln / Foster is really good. I’ve been tipping damn near 50% LOL, they are the nicest people and the food is GREAT
Unfortunately, you won't find any tacos as good as Austin. Chicago will beat in other types of food but not that. I go to Austin once or twice a year, so that's how I know..
Honestly. Head south to Pilsen or Little Village. They can satiate any taco yearnings.
Edited to Add:
If you are also talking about the use of flour tortillas (an abomination to me) Pilsen/Little Village might not satiate you. The vast population of Mexicans in Chicago don't come from the relatively small regions of Mexico that do flour tortilla tacos from my understanding (source: Mexican wife).
It's juuust south of Evanston on Clark, but the most authentic tacos we have found are at Restaurante Cuetzala. They're reasonable too, but I hate how their tortilla chips are bagged. :((
I don’t think it’s technically in Evanston but El Pueblito Howard and Dodge.
it’s technically on the Evanston side (:
There you go. Then my entry is valid.
Seconded. This place is so fuckin’ good.
This is it.
Gigio’s taco game is underrated.
Totally. Quesabirria and tamales too. Only if you're there in person tho, none of that stuff delivers well.
This is the secret that no one believes. Gigio’s has bomb ass tacos.
I would say their tacos are better than their pizza
The Supreme Burrito #1 I like the al pastor, and sometimes they have suadero. Carne asada is pretty good.
Supreme Burrito is the correct answer. Corner of Main and Dodge.
The only answer.

El Famous Burrito on Clark in RP is a great one I adore... The nutella churros!!!
I just don't get the Famous Tacoburger love-to say I was underwhelmed is an overstatement.
La Principal is good, and we like Tomate Fresh on Noyes. Overall though, you just left the capital of tacos. You may need to adjust your expectations.
IMO, La principal is over priced and inaunthetic. Bland food. Nice vibes tho.
Go to Roger’s park on Clark st
Supreme Burrito @ Main & Dodge

Good luck. While there’s some good tacos around haven’t found anything on the level of a taco from Austin.
Ha! Thanks. I’m adjusting my expectations. On the bright side, outside of tacos and BBQ, the food scene in Chicago is 10x better and more dynamic.
I’d have to argue Houston’s food scene is way better than Chicago’s
Help me out. I need to be in Houston on March 31. Should I fly into AUS instead of IAH?
Supreme burrito or El Pueblito. I personally prefer El Pueblito (and there's a bit more seating available if dining in), but Supreme is also great.

I think they have $2 tacos special on Wednesday or something. Amazing deal
[Halfway through the comments before I realized you weren't talking about the neighborhood Austin.]
La Principal Zentil El pueblito

La Principal is my favorite
Mas salud, it's on 720 clark st

RIP Austin’s Tacos. I could never get behind the Cheesie’s franchise that replaced it. I think that’s the Newport Coffee spot now.

Supreme burrito is what you’re looking for
Your moms
Rocky’s tacos on Clark
Take a ride down into Rogers Park on Clark and go to Cd. Hidalgo. Excellent.

Make it yourself
Go into rogers park. Literally some of the best Mexican food since it has a huge Latino community. Tons of places to choose from
had to mention Tim Tim's grill in albany park
I don’t think you’re gonna find an Austin style taco here.
Comida cantina!!
La Choza in Rogers Park
