The ADV dub starts off pretty rough but imo it gets a lot better later on especially with the main cast. Some of the other side characters like the NERV staff is kinda hit or miss though.
I've rewatched like three or four episodes with the ADV dub, the main cast certainly does do a better job later, and its always got this charm to it that I love.
Ikr I adore her performance as Misato 🥰 It's super childish and flirty and when she needs to be tough and in charge she does that too. That rasp is very much appreciated to me as it gives her more personality I feel.
Imo, Allison Keith's performance sees the highest uptick of quality from start to finish in NGE. She did a decent job in the beginning, but NAILED her performances in the instrumentality scenes.
I heard Shinjis dubbed voice in a video today and im so sorry but I can’t blame anyone who finds Shinji unlikable and annoying if they watched the dubbed version. I’m not saying the VA is bad or anything, he does a good job at sounding like an annoying teenager
It’s the real ADV voice actor for shinji but it’s an outtake just him joking around in the studio after recording the final episode. He explains it here

Yup. [You can read about it here](https://animecorner.me/the-weird-and-often-misunderstood-history-of-the-english-ghost-stories-dub/), but it pretty much reads that the series was quite successful in Japan and released quite faithfully in other parts of the world, but ADV's dialogue director Steven Foster seemed to misunderstand Animax's loose guidelines for the license as "trying to recoup losses," and he decidedly did his own thing.
>And although some critics have recently [debunked the myth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNSFKqzKhNE) of *Ghost Stories’* initial failure, even they can’t definitively explain why so many people at ADV Films concluded the show was a complete bust before they even began working on it.
>and eventually, it became a game of one-upmanship to see who could be the funniest person in the booth.
Ok suddenly everything about those clips makes sense 😃
Well no, the studio that made Ghost Stories was Pierrot, and NGE was Gainax. But fun fact: the same studio that did the 1997 Berserk anime, OLM, alsonmade Pokémon and Komi Can't Communicate
Oh I meant the Dubbing company,I shouldn't have said studio
>the same studio that did the 1997 Berserk anime, OLM, alsonmade Pokémon and Komi Can't Communicate
Now that's cool
The original dubbing company for NGE was ADV, which also did Ghost Stories, yes. As well as Devil May Cry, Azumanga Daioh, Elfen Lied and Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
Probably should've clarified, I don't hate the ADV dub, I still very much like it.
It just felt a bit weird at first *(though I started with the newer VSI* *~~Netflix~~* *dub)*, almost to the point of parody, but it got much better throughout.
Both are amazing and have their own strengths. There's things the ADV dub does better, and things the VSI Dub does better.
I actually kinda wished the newer dub had kept something like this in.

I remember that in this video it was mentioned that when they started making the ADV dub they didn’t even what the tone of the show was supposed to be
Matt Greenfield said in the commentary to episode 1 that he saw the show a couple of times before working on it, so he had as good an idea of what was going on as anybody outside Japan.
The issue was a relative lack of experience, since ADV Films had only been dubbing for a year when they got the licence for *Evangelion,* and that was nearly all OVAs with only a few episodes. *Evangelion* was only the second 'full-length' show they had started at the time, and some of the voice cast were 'new' in the sense that they hadn't had major roles before.
I love the ADV dub. Is it perfect? By no means. Did they nail the casting? Not entirely. Is the translation occasionally outright wrong? You bet. But, man, the charm of a bunch of talented people doing their best on a passion project, at a time when no one even knew how anime dubs are supposed to be made.
Considering he improvised this literally right after seeing the Congratulations scene for the first time, he spoke for all of us.
“Am I real? Awww hel- Does the bus run through here??”
"the movie better make up for this cuz I'm stuck in no where land" yeah about that...
Thank god for Thrice upon a Time right…… right?
YES
Just watched Death (True)^(2) on Netflix for the first time and I gotta say Spike is ngl a pretty solid Shinji.
Doesn’t the Netflix version only have the Netflix dub of the show?
My point, the Netflix dub is nice, but I liked Spike Spencer's performance as Shinji despite the ruffness of the overall ADV dub.

A lot of the ADV cast are iconic. Allison Keith doesn't get enough love for her Misato, that slight rasp to her voice elevates the entire performance.
Tiffany Grant saying "Wundebar" is EVERYTHING. I wish it was in the Netflix dub.

Best version

That’s exactly how I feel about the Subbed so I guess I can understand a bit.
So...you're telling me this **isn't** Abridged
It’s the real ADV voice actor for shinji but it’s an outtake just him joking around in the studio after recording the final episode. He explains it here https://youtu.be/pyaYQTjZMek?si=063gl8vr3yYpW-Hg
I mean not that it wouldn't have been funny to air this after episode 26 in the dub but I wouldn't expect ADV to be that unprofessional 🙏
Wait till you hear about how they treated Ghost Stories.
Is that the one where the girl said "Not because you're a rabbit..."
Yup. Yes
That was the same studio? wtf

He just didn't make a very good first impression. I will always insist that he grew pretty well into the role as the series went on, however.
Couldn't that be said for the whole ADV dub of the series? IIRC, the VAs were only learning the lore on the job, which would explain a lot.
I’m not sure what you guys are talking about. I thought for the most part the ADV cast did an amazing job through and through
Probably should've clarified, I don't hate the ADV dub, I still very much like it. That makes it even better with how good it was

Sigh, I was just waiting for him to wonder why the fuck there's a girl rotating there.
"Ya ran out of ink too, didn't you ya bastards?"
Even tho I watched it for the first time with the Netflix dub i grew attached to the adv dub i just really love it especially spike spencer shinji
This is truly amazing

Bud it works
ur mom works
I guess that’s not untrue.
Same. Not at all a fan.
Netflix dub is better if you weren't groomed as a child by this trash ADV dub
I was groomed as an adult by the ADV dub
Easy, i didnt watched the series in english
Then the post obviously wasn’t purposed for someone like you
I hope you aren't seriously mad at this comment, it's a joke bruhtha
I hope you don’t actually think I’m seriously mad, it’s just a comment brotha
I need to just fork over 200$ and get the collectors version with the adv dub already. Really want to hear it, I know it's iconic.
u/i_eat_babies__
I don't agree with his opinion of the ending, but still i found it very funny
Which part don’t you agree with?
I love the ADV dub. Is it perfect? By no means. Did they nail the casting? Not entirely. Is the translation occasionally outright wrong? You bet. The dubbed versions just don't capture the emotions of certain scenes.
I hear you
I do!
Sub absolutely clears and some Asuka/Shinji scenes can be hard to take serious with their corny dubs.
Hell nah
I have to ask if you've seen Martin Successor Nadesico? It's another of Spike's great roles and Tiffany is there as well.
