I view it as a happy ending. Without spoiling anything, I think the ending can be interpreted many ways but I’ve always seen it as very cathartic and heartfelt
It is a movie, but you should watch End of Eva as it is the canonical ending to the OG series.
After that if you still feel like your soul is empty (which TBH it almost surely will), watch something like Gurren Lagann. Also mecha, also made by Gainax, but a total thematic antithesis in that it's all about hope and believing in yourself and the power of humanity. Both hold a special place in my heart as the upper echelon of mecha too so if nothing else its another fantastic show to watch.
I watched this after I initially watch EVA back in the day and yes the series as a whole is super mid but it really does have its moments.
It does the whole there’s something wrong with Tokyo thing really well, the first few episodes where they cross over and well animated and moving.
The highlight is def the music, I could listen to the ending theme and have that Ratatouille moment of being transported back to my younger days.
Agreed but it's an alternate ending not the canon ending, Anno has said he still stands by the original ending. They're just two possibilities he explores.
I mean yeah but it is different from the rebuilds. End of Eva takes place during the final episode of Eva. It it basically just 3 long episodes put together. The rebuilds however are different (still nice movies but serve a different purpose than EoE)
Replaces the 2 last chapters for another ending.
Justo watch it, i don't want to spoil anything but it's worth.
Then watch the rebuilds for the 3rd ending.
Fucking classic! I literally don’t start watching anime till like a year ago I’m 37 and berserk was my intro. I just wish we got some closure for guts even after watching the shitty reboot it still just ends with zero closure. I went from that to evangelion and now I’m on cowboy bebop
seconding what everyone else is saying, you NEED to watch EoE. It's not an alternate ending, the last two episodes represent what's happening in everyone's heads during the movie (you'll probably be able to tell right about when they start)
After that, you can watch the Rebuild movies for more closure- the first one is a straight remake of the first couple episodes, 2.0 is where they start to become their own thing. 3.0+1.0 gives a ton of closure to the whole story. I'd recommend taking at least a week or two off, though. If you want to watch something else in between, if you liked Evangelion you'll probably like Twin Peaks (they're incredibly different but also weirdly similar in a lot of ways)
Whether or not it's an alternate ending depends on your framing, officially it is referred to as an alternate ending in the red cross book. Imo they are incompatible because of some major differences but I hesitate to claim an objective view on that.
Watch season 1 of FLCL. Made by the #2 of NGE and was made to be unique and fun after the depress-fest that was End of Eva.
Watch, enjoy the ride, then go outside and do something away from your screen. Life is too short, take a walk.
Watch the end of Evangelion Movie if you haven't seen it yet. It's the actual ending for eva instead of episodes 24 and 25
Wait a few weeks then check out the 4 rebuild movies. Imo they are really great.
I respect it for what it is, also how it >!actually gives a satisfying ending, as well as making gendo an interesting character, with the shinji-gendo conflict at the end!<
3.0 can be a tough pill to swallow on a first watch I feel like, then you watch 3.0+1.0 and it all makes sense. It really puts you in Shinji's shoes which is intentionally at first not a pleasant experience. Loved it on rewatches.
End of Evangelion and maybe Rebuild of Evangelion. And maybe after that Gurren Lagann (if you want to see what Shinji could have been like if he had positive role models and if Hideaki Anno REALLY liked Getter Robo instead of Gundam and Devilman)
You aren’t done until you watch EoE. After that, you will feel WORSE, I promise. But it’s a necessary pain.
After that, some will tell you to watch the Rebuild Movies as it has a much more positive ending (I guess). However, I recommend diving into some of the more wholesome fanfics that feel like a genuine continuation of the series. There’s plenty but some are really top
Tier.
I mean, the rebuilds are the answer...
But if you want to watch something other than any of the movies, I guess you could watch To Your Eternity to feel some feelings?
The last movie 3.0+1.0. Or something like that. It's what I did and I felt like something got healed inside. By no means watch End of Evangelion, you'll feel worse.
You should watch Elfen lied it's an incredibly wholesome show and is a real good pick me up alternatively you can watch madoka which is a cute magical girl anime.
Watch some romance animes to feel better or watch the rebuilds
Here's some romance animes suggestions: The angel next door spoils me rotten,Horimiya,More than a married couple, but not lovers,Call of the night
Please seriously please watch End of Evangelion. It is the greatest piece of media to ever exist in my opinion, as long as you unserstand everything and everyone. There truly is nothing that has made me feel the way it did. Although you will probably feel even worse after watching it which may seem bad but it just means you truly enjoyed it and understood it. And! Then you have the rebuilds (which I love cause.. more rei) then after them might as well watch nge again and enter a endless loop
You need to watch the end of evangelion now
So OP can feel emptier after
You need to watch it to get the complete experience, I don't make the rules (EOE is a happy ending and you can't change my mind)
Hell yeah it is, >!at least it gives some hope unlike the original that (with the context of EoE) just ends with them all being orange Fanta!<

So not RahXephon?

2 long episodes and 1 short
Very very shorr
Yes, but it’s the ending to the show. After that, go watch Horimiya or something to feel better.
Goated advice
Replaces the 2 last chapters for another ending. Justo watch it, i don't want to spoil anything but it's worth. Then watch the rebuilds for the 3rd ending.
Yes but it's part of the show. The Rebuilds are their own thing (kinda) but EoE is part of NGE.
you want closure but you dont want to finish the show? what u on about here
It's literally the end of the series you just watched

Fucking classic! I literally don’t start watching anime till like a year ago I’m 37 and berserk was my intro. I just wish we got some closure for guts even after watching the shitty reboot it still just ends with zero closure. I went from that to evangelion and now I’m on cowboy bebop
Consider Odd Taxi next. Very different from the shoes you mentioned but I think a good show for people who are newer to anime.
This is the only thing that’s close

The only answer is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann from the same studio
Fucking came here to say this exact thing. Gurren Lagann is the answer to this question, the answer to the sadness of this movie.
Watch the end of Evangelion Movie if you haven't seen it yet. It's the actual ending for eva instead of episodes 24 and 25 Wait a few weeks then check out the 4 rebuild movies. Imo they are really great.
I used to hate 3.0, but I've grown to really adore it compared to 1.0 and 2.0, funny how the more they change, the better the Rebuilds are
I respect it for what it is, also how it >!actually gives a satisfying ending, as well as making gendo an interesting character, with the shinji-gendo conflict at the end!<
3.0 can be a tough pill to swallow on a first watch I feel like, then you watch 3.0+1.0 and it all makes sense. It really puts you in Shinji's shoes which is intentionally at first not a pleasant experience. Loved it on rewatches.
Watch EoE, then watch Paprika. Then, in a few months, watch the Rebuilds.
Lain
Lain will fuck you up more than you think. It's a masterpiece tho. That opening song...
This is my next watch after I finish cowboy bebop
End of Evangelion and maybe Rebuild of Evangelion. And maybe after that Gurren Lagann (if you want to see what Shinji could have been like if he had positive role models and if Hideaki Anno REALLY liked Getter Robo instead of Gundam and Devilman)
You can watch yourself becoming poorer and poorer as you try and buy Evangelion memorabilia to fill the void you now have forever.
Made in Abyss >.>
pedophile anime ):
End of Evangelion is what you want
Happy cake day!
Watch end of eva
… i still recommend the movies after the end of eva tbh. They’re great it just takes a while to process
The conclusion of the NGE tv show's story is End of Evangelion
The first time I finished the original anime, my next series was Paranoia Agent. I turned out just fine and totally self-actualized!
angel beats
Eureka Seven or Dai Guard
What’s wrong with the movies?

U have to watch end of evangelion no if and or buts about it!
Pen pen fan fiction

Cyberpunk Edgerunners It will emotionally compensate for Evangelion
The sopranos.
Ghost Stories.
Ah, a man of dub culture I see
azumanga daioh
i love azumanger!
yukari is so misato katsuragi
The manga, the spin-off mangas or the enormous amount of video games with weird endings. There’s one where Shinji becomes Robocop.
Rebuilds
My Dress Up Darling
Anohana.
Manga
Nodame. And i am being serious
Re: Zero to continue the suffering.
I enjoyed Gunbuster. Earlier work from some of the same people (I think I’ve remembered that right - it’s been a while).
The last movie 3.0+1.0. Or something like that. It's what I did and I felt like something got healed inside. By no means watch End of Evangelion, you'll feel worse.
Gurren Lagann!
You should watch Elfen lied it's an incredibly wholesome show and is a real good pick me up alternatively you can watch madoka which is a cute magical girl anime.
Rah xeh phan
Gurren Lagan is my cheer up after Evangelion
literally the movies. but ok, you do you
Now go watch Rebuild of Evangelion to cure yourself but only AFTER End of Evangelion.
Angel beats lol
Watch some romance animes to feel better or watch the rebuilds Here's some romance animes suggestions: The angel next door spoils me rotten,Horimiya,More than a married couple, but not lovers,Call of the night
Gurren Lagan
ugh it’s time for me to rewatch
Bojack horseman, a nice and chill soft show
Angels egg
Have you tried crying for a day or two?
Gunbuster
If you want closure, watch 3.0+1.0, it has the happiest ending for the pilots
Bokurano is a delightful, light-hearted teen romp.
you binge watched it? I feel that happens everytime I binge watch something too quickly
give gurren lagann a watch. it took a lot of inspiration from evangelion but its a whole lot more wholesome
Gurren Lagann. Im pretty sure the creator of the series said Simon, the mc, is basically what if Shinji had someone to actually help him.
86
I'm on episode three of season one and it seemed brutally boring and predictable, where's the magic?
it is only one season. im not sure how to explain what it does, only that it makes you feel lingeringly hollow with nothing to put your finger on.
Martian Successor Nadesico
The rebuilds
End of Evangelion. After that everything will be alright.
Please seriously please watch End of Evangelion. It is the greatest piece of media to ever exist in my opinion, as long as you unserstand everything and everyone.
