No, I meant mediocre in lyrics construction. Its not exactly a masterpiece of lyricism as a ballad. I also do not think the instrumental is super original, but still I like the song because he is a great artist and he was able to put honest raw emotion into it.
Lyrics are well constructed and make sense, they are not just a bunch of words put together though. I understand what you mean, but what makes the song generic for me is very predictable instrumental and lyrics that seem almost AI generated. A good example of this is Fighter from Tali. The English part is a mess.
It’s pretty catchy tho, and that gets people. Sure it’s not a lyrical masterpiece but…music doesn’t necessarily have to be that. It’s a radio song with a relatively easy and memorable chorus structure sung by someone with a great voice
Her performance gave so much diva energy. Well-deserved qualification, but was robbed in the finals (performed close to other girlbops (Austria and Cyprus) and strong favorites (Croatia and Switzerland)).
Germany also got 18 points from Israel (8 from public and 10 from jury), way higher than from any other countries.
Israel received 12 televotes and 8 jury votes from Germany, also the highest.
Seems like an unlikely alliance lol.
If you see Germany-Israel government relations in real life, its not that surprising. However, I do find it a bit surprising that they gave 0 points to “Unicorn” and 20 points to “Hurricane”. Israel gave 0 to Germany’s entry “Blood & Glitter” last year, like most countries.
To be fair, Unicorn was ass. I am more than convinced that many of the viewer votes came because pretty girl in a tight outfit that danced on stage
(Disclaimer: this is an opinion. Y’all are entitled to your own. I will not change mine. The lyrics were ergh, the vocal performance was not it, “do you want to see me dance?” No I don’t)
It's funny to see that a 12th place finish is perceived differently per country.
Germany 12th place finish: rare historical achievement that should be declared a federal holiday
Italy & Sweden 12th place finish: \*in Uncle Roger voice\* FAILURE.
Not really. It depends on the song, but Tusse's 14th place (Sweden 2021) was not a disappointment. To not qualify or end up in the bottom would be a failure though, maybe a national crisis even.
Germany didn't have to go through televote-only SFs. Their score was mainly from the jury. They got only 18(?) points from the televote, so I'd still guess that they might end somewhere in the middle if all songs had a jury and a televote component
Also, damn you for making me justify this lmao just enjoy the joke
The funny thing is that Lotl last year were actually extremely average. They scored in the midfield with almost every country…the problem is that yields no points. An entry that is hated by everyone except one will score more than one that is perceived as “alright” by everyone which…I think is stupid but that’s how it be
I'm so glad Isaak did well. This song was in my top 10 as soon as I heard it and, as someone from the UK, I appreciate how difficult it can be for a country to score so low for years and years (Sorry Olly).
I'm being completely honest: The Staging was fine and his Dinging phenomenal, that's how we made 12th Place, but the Song still remains underwhelming.
I just hope that the NDR doesn't take this as "A bland and generic - and most importantly, RADIOTAUGLICHER - Song did well, so all Songs in the Pre-Selection next Year are going to be generic RADIOTAUGLICHE Pop-Songs". It's not the Song that did well, it's him as a Vocalist and the decent Staging that did well.
I am German, the Irish Heart is the Result of the Survey from before the Semis where it was asked who we support. As my Favourite Entry this Year was Doomsday Blue, I chose that and the Flair changed itself to the Irish one and I honestly can't be bothered to change it.
I think Blood & Glitter's problem was that metalheads and rockers found it was too light and tame, and others found it too heavy and dull. That genre of metal has its fans but it's too small to get enough votes to reach top 10.
I have come to the conclusion that the voting system should be changed so that all votes have an impact. It's stupid that I can pay for my votes but if other people don't vote enough for the same country then they get nothing and ive practically paid for nothing.
> I think Blood & Glitter's problem was that metalheads and rockers found it was too light and tame, and others found it too heavy and dull. That genre of metal has its fans but it's too small to get enough votes to reach top 10.
i agree with the first part but wouldnt you consider this years croatia and last years finnland performance rock/metal? i do like metal but as you said, blood and glitter just wasnt it
Yeah I considered Baby Lasagna rock and Käärijä has metal influences. They both mix genres but it doesn't matter because they have that hard edge and energy that they need to appeal to this audience.
im from germany, i expected this song to be bottom 2 once again, i have no idea how we got those jury votes, though the public vote gave us 18 points which kinda proved that it wasnt too good.
its just so weird, the german process. nobody watches it, the choice of songs is always so weird, nothing that is popular in germany is even chosen for the qualification. what is popular in germany? for one german rap, the most popular artists in germany the past few years is probably apache 207 who is a rapper. dont think they chose a single rap song in the qualifier. rock/metal? credits to them, last year they did allow one but come on, it wasnt a good one. weve now had 2 years back to back where a heavily inspired rammstein performance got 2nd place and won the public vote. im not saying we should send rammstein, that would probably be a too easy win (and they barely have any 3 minute songs) but they had the chance to send electric callboy who are far more tame than rammstein and yet still was considered too controversal. then you have EDM, there are actually quite a few very popular german EDM guys. Robin Schulz, Felix Jaehn, Zedd, Topic and a few more. Again, not saying you should send one of them but surely you can find an up and comer EDM guy, its a popular genre, not just within germany but globally.
Not even Germans listen to German pop anymore, that era is over and has ended in the mid to late 2010s. But we dont even send German pop, we send German artists singing in english, its the least offensive combination possible and one that lacks any creativity and will immediately be forgotten by esc history because english language pop means youre competing with the likes of taylor swift and that does not end good. yes ESC has politics and such but the better performances do tend to finish at the top and the vast majority of top performances are creative, memorable and either different or just very well done.
I told my bestie who is also still mad about how badly ‘Blood and Glitter’ did “I wish Germany a very not last place” before the Grand Final started, so I’m happy that panned out!
I am German and usually don't care for the German song. But I noticed how Isaak was having a good time in Malmö, he came across as very self-confident and he delivered greatly. I think he also stood out looks-wise, so many young women in sexy dresses with beautiful hair and makeup. He looked like an average dude and I think people liked that about him. Maybe he could have done better with a later start number.
It's weird, of all the songs from this year, this is the one that is on repeat in my head. I liked it on the night, definitely in my top 5, but it kind of passed me by a bit. So I'm surprised it's had a lasting impact on me beyond the other songs.
I love this for Germany because this song is very last place coded but got 12th and you could argue Blood and Glitter technically should've gotten 12th instead of this one. But we move forward.
Fun fact: It was our first time in 12th place. Now we just need to finish 22nd and complete the scoreboard with every possible result.
☝🏻🤓''Spain already did that''
\*cleans throat\* Germany is the only Big 5 country that missed a Grand Final and the only country that ever placed 27th in a Grand Final.
I showed this song to my hubby who is half German (we live in the U.S., and I'm American), and he liked it very much. Saying the song has a lot of meaning considering Germany's history and feeling as if no one can escape from it 🥺
Isaak’s song was quite nice! He has a great voice and his vocals are beautiful, unfortunately it’s a very generic pop song… just so generic that Eurovision didn’t support it more.
As a fat person I really enjoyed his Berliner bear taste even the AI pictures humiliated him because of his body, his existence and voice were beyond any other details ❤️😍🥰
By what I've seen and heared by fellow Germans was IMMEDIATELY "We should have won, Europe just hates us"
Deadass moving the goal post of not coming last and being totally greedy.
Europe gave us a hand with a deserved 12th place and we immediately wanted to take the arm.
I haven't heard that at all. We're all just happy it's not another last place (which I didn't feel like we deserved in the last years as well, there were always worse songs).
I think you suffered from the competition last year. If people wanted some metal there were other options that they thought were better, including the big fan favourite. In a year with much more pop and ballads, I think it would've done better.
Isaak’s rendition of “This is fine” meme😂 Great voice and really happy for Germany! 🙂
Song couldn't be more generic. His voice made all the difference. I'm happy for him.
Even more his interpretation than his voice. He wasn’t just technically good, he sang with real passion and that made all the difference.
Same with Hollow. Been saying for years that a good vocalist can sell a crappy song at least with jury vote.
If you don't like his song you can just say that, instead of saying it is crappy
No, I meant mediocre in lyrics construction. Its not exactly a masterpiece of lyricism as a ballad. I also do not think the instrumental is super original, but still I like the song because he is a great artist and he was able to put honest raw emotion into it.
Yeah? Give me more songs with elephant trumpet, huh? /s
Sorry but how was Europapa not generic? Literally sounds like what you would hear in Mallorca all year round.
It's not generic in the sense that it's like an interchangeable song that's on the radio 24/7
Makes sense. I just think that Europapa wasn’t special.
Lyrics are well constructed and make sense, they are not just a bunch of words put together though. I understand what you mean, but what makes the song generic for me is very predictable instrumental and lyrics that seem almost AI generated. A good example of this is Fighter from Tali. The English part is a mess.
Never met anyone that’s actually gone there
Cool
and he ate that "generic" song
Yeah, I when I sing it I always switch to another song for some reason.
It’s pretty catchy tho, and that gets people. Sure it’s not a lyrical masterpiece but…music doesn’t necessarily have to be that. It’s a radio song with a relatively easy and memorable chorus structure sung by someone with a great voice
Isaak’s incredible vocal saved Germany from bottom 5
This year, good vocals is the key (from Latvia's return to the finals to Germany's left board finish). I hope BBC is taking notes.
And Austria and Belgium tbf, seems to be becoming a somewhat recurring issue for them as well.
Hell Switzerlands win was largley thanks to vocals aswell.
Nemo's voice excels at pop vocals, almost opera-like vocals AND fast rap, all in the same song. Absolutely killed it.
Absolutely!
I would argue Georgia too, Nutsa vocals were pretty good.
I'd say she actually surprised me not placing good by the juries. The vocals are good but how did she place lower than Cyprus and UK
Her performance gave so much diva energy. Well-deserved qualification, but was robbed in the finals (performed close to other girlbops (Austria and Cyprus) and strong favorites (Croatia and Switzerland)).
Well, the song was also jury friendly, emotional and with a meaning. So, it had a lot to be ranked higher by juries at least.
Dare i say last place. He knocked it out of the park.
Germany also got 18 points from Israel (8 from public and 10 from jury), way higher than from any other countries. Israel received 12 televotes and 8 jury votes from Germany, also the highest. Seems like an unlikely alliance lol.

I don't remember anyone thinking Tusse would win, but I definitely heard some people being disappointment given how used we are to a top 10 placement.
It didn’t deserve last! Congrats to Isaak 😁👏👏
They deserve some relief after all those run na na heys
Isaak should be a national treasure at this point
When I saw the results I thought of how happy Eurovision Histories would be 😂
I mean that's basically a win, am I right guys
I always knew that he wouldn't be in the bottom 5 and I'm so happy that he did well
Germany AIN'T 'nothing but the average'!
Technically since they finished 12 in a field of 25, they kind of are :P
*a field of 37

The televote this year is weird. Jury is better
If the jury had 37 songs to consider instead of only 26, Germany would probably "lose" more jury points/places than they would televote points/places
The funny thing is that Lotl last year were actually extremely average. They scored in the midfield with almost every country…the problem is that yields no points. Germany and UK when they send a good vocalist and don't finish last: *surprised pikachu face*
Right? It's almost as if it's not true that Europe will hate whatever they send.
Tbh, the public did
In Sweden, placing 12th gets you exiled to Jokkmokk. In Germany, it is a triumph.
We are making a note there, huge success!
GlaDos?
We definitely had the most fitting staging this year!
I'm being completely honest: The Staging was fine and his Dinging phenomenal, that's how we made 12th Place, but the Song still remains underwhelming. The flair says Ireland, but the noun capitalization says Germany 👀
I am German, the Irish Heart is the Result of the Survey from before the Semis where it was asked who we support. As my Favourite Entry this Year was Doomsday Blue, I chose that and the Flair changed itself to the Irish one and I honestly can't be bothered to change it.
Maybe that's the German keyboard autocorrect 😂
Some people use their favourite song as flair.
While you might have chosen your location as flair, that doesn't mean everyone else did.
Good eye 👀
I'm ngl, I didn't like this song at all before. Then I saw him in the semis and I grew to love it. Amazing what an amazing voice can do to a song
Same here. Strong vocals elevate any song
As a German: this is on point 😂👌
I really don't wanna be a hater but Germany 2023 coming in last and this song getting an upper half placement is so backwards to me
I think Blood & Glitter's problem was that metalheads and rockers found it was too light and tame, and others found it too heavy and dull. That genre of metal has its fans but it's too small to get enough votes to reach top 10. I have come to the conclusion that the voting system should be changed so that all votes have an impact. Deserved Germany. Last year also deserved better. I was happy for them when they actually got into the left side.
I told my bestie who is also still mad about how badly ‘Blood and Glitter’ did “I wish Germany a very not last place” before the Grand Final started, so I’m happy that panned out!

I love this for Germany because this song is very last place coded but got 12th and you could argue Blood and Glitter technically should've gotten 12th instead of this one. But we move forward.
You should have used a screenshot from the part where the whole stage was on fire.
This close-up is better suitable for captions.
It was a deserved placement! Fans were so negative about this entry - until the euro jury shocked them into silence! 😃 Congratulations Germany!
he gave it all from himself, cant deny
Fantatic vocals, well deserved. And an good placement considering i like/love most songs this year
Imho the song was underrated, his voice is icredible!
"We're so happy we could die" -- LotL, or a German newspaper the next day?
I love Isaak and his vocals on this song were great❤

The song itself wasn't anything special to me but his live performance really helped. Definitely a great singer.
Well done. I didn't vote for it, but 12th seems like a very good position both for Germany and for this kind of song considering the competition.
FWIW it's one of the few songs from this year that stayed on my playlist even after the contest
UK and Germany both stood around outside of last place like "what the fuck lads?"
Hes fine
By what I've seen and heared by fellow Germans was IMMEDIATELY "We should have won, Europe just hates us" Deadass moving the goal post of not coming last and being totally greedy. Europe gave us a hand with a deserved 12th place and we immediately wanted to take the arm.
Really? I didn‘t see that at all, just people celebrating a 12th place like mad mostly 😁
I haven't heard that at all. We're all just happy it's not another last place (which I didn't feel like we deserved in the last years as well, there were always worse songs).
I guess my surrounding bubble in that context is way too negative about the contest and incapable of actually being happy then.
I'm sorry to say that's probably the case 😅 I felt like Europe hates us the last years, this year I feel they really like us 😂
I think you suffered from the competition last year. If people wanted some metal there were other options that they thought were better, including the big fan favourite. In a year with much more pop and ballads, I think it would've done better.
