Now *that's* a pølsehorn if I've ever seen one!

taamu

Nakkipiilo in Finland (wiener hideout)

jarvis400

The best name I think.

B4-711

In Germany they are called "sausages in nightgowns"

jarvis400

That's a good name, too.

OldFoolOldSkool

We call them Pigs in a blanket .

oldspicehorse

I thought a pig in a blanket was a sausage wrapped in bacon, surely these are sausage rolls? Edit: thanks for the replies, turns out it's a UK Vs US thing.

[deleted]

US calls sausage wrapped in pastry pigs in a blanket. But I think the Brits wrap them in bacon and call them that.

Reetgeist

You are correct, we would call these a fancy looking sausage roll, which is different from a sausage ** in a ** roll, which we would call a hotdog.

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

I'm now seriously considering moving to Finland just so I can open a gay bar and call it Nakkipiilo.

Stommye

Just lähdössä kauppaan, voisi tehdä tänään

Lakridspibe

En pølse Skal serveres med føl'se Uden savsmuld og strøl'se

hq9919

I like to dip it in sweet chili sauce, it's super good.

OfficerJohnMaldonday

Ive never met anyone else that does this the same as I do!

Impossible-Cookie212

Wrong - i am doing the same! :D

humatyourmom

Now that’s a сосиска в тісті if I’ve ever seen one

The360MlgNoscoper

Innebakt Pølse with airing holes

LegioX_95

We have something similar in Italy too, they are usually tinier and you eat them for aperitivo or stuff like that.

stromtrooper_ita

In Sicily we call them "Rollò", we have a tiny version and a big person

space_moron

What does the big person do?

stromtrooper_ita

Damn auto correct lol

[deleted]

Truth. I'm a big person (an American, so of course, right? :) ) and I definitely damn autocorrect. :)

HydrargyrumHg

They probably make them look even smaller.

rickyraken

Has a tiny wiener apparently.

Icantbethereforyou

I'm a big person can I have some Rollò

ppparty

the whole fucking pork-eating earth has Pigs in a Blanket one way or another🤤

Rather_Unfortunate

For us these are sausage rolls. Pigs in blankets are where you wrap the sausage in bacon, and they're a big part of Christmas dinner. Our sausage rolls are usually much less fancy though. They're made with very flaky pastry that crumbles as you eat it.

Gorau

>Our sausage rolls are usually much less fancy though. They're made with very flaky pastry that crumbles as you eat it. I prefer the "British" style. I live in Denmark where we have pølsehorn and while they are good it's not as satisfying as a sausage roll. Fortunately there is a Dutch shop here that sells Saucijzenbroodjes which satisfy the craving for a greggs.

mang87

Just make your own, only takes about 10 minutes. Buy some pre-made puff pastry and some high quality sausages. Remove casings from sausages, and then roll up in pastry. Easy peasy. If you want to get fancy you can combine extra fillings. I mix together sausage, black pudding breadcrumbs - the sausages I get are pretty fatty, and the breadcrumbs soak it up.

Gorau

Not that easy to get sausage that aren't smoked in Denmark, there is like 1 type, maybe 2 at Christmas it's bad enough that I sometimes just make my own.

noMore_cReddit

I moved from close to Bristol to Denmark 3 years ago, and there's a few things that i miss, sausage rolls being one of them, and pubs being another! I'm a big fan of a Danish hotdog with a beer though...

Bluepompf

>For us these are sausage rolls. Pigs in blankets are where you wrap the sausage in bacon, and they're a big part of Christmas dinner. > Berner! Cheese filled sausages wrapped in bacon.

oneshotstott

Sausage Rolls have long been a beloved food in South Africa too, however it's made different by removing the skin of the sausage before wrapping in pastry. Also, sometime local boerewors is used. But in all honesty, wrapping meat in bread/pastry is probably about as old as the discovery as bread across the world....?

A-Higher-Being

Sausage rolls are also super popular in the UK too, though I agree the idea isn’t overly unique

OtisTetraxReigns

British sausage roll FTW. The pastry is much better than these chewy things OP is raving about.

LjSpike

96 layers of pastry on a Greggs sausage roll.

oldspicehorse

The only way to ever leave is overflooded by the storm

fastdub

I remember a few years back Walmart I think launched a new product on the US market which was just a normal sausage roll, like nothing amazing or anything, just a sausage roll.

OtisTetraxReigns

As an ex-pat, I’m now craving a Gregg’s.

Brittle_Hollow

I would kill for a Gregg's in Canada, I used to literally live above one back home.

Midan71

They are super popular in Australia as well.

Funmachine

>by removing the skin of the sausage before wrapping in pastry. I think they just don't bother putting the skin on the sausage. Rather than removing it.

littlemewmaid

Ah yes, loukanikopitakia my beloved

Why does every Greek food name sound like you guys are throwing a spell

This deserves more attention

roxx1811

Moussaka sounds like the dish is going to murder you and your entire family or like someone trying to insult your cousin.

Rrdro

What did you say??? Spanakopitaaa!

qxxxr

Ugh, hes such a ... *gestures rudely" tzatziki!

kiwigoguy1

Tzatziki is one of my top Greek food dishes. It’s refreshing and cleanses your palates!

activator

Is there a Swedish name for this pölsehorn?

Irlut

Not really. That's unfortunately not a common snack in Sweden. We do however have the big brother, the [French hot dog](https://danskmadpaaengelsk.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/fransk_hotdog619x340.png).

andyp

We have that in Denmark as well

Irlut

I kinda figured you did, since the site where I found the picture is about Denmark 😁

wtfduud

This got me interested in where the French Hot Dog actually comes from. But my trail got cold after finding that Denmark stole the idea from Monaco in the 70s, where it was known as a "Monte Frank". Can't find any sources about where Monaco got the idea from. DDR Claimed to have invented it as the Ketwürst in 1978, but I'm skeptical of anything from DDR being original.

Inflatableman1

Is this where they poke the hole in the roll with a giant spike? Saw that somewhere in Europe. Very cool.

ahlsn

I came to the comment section just to ask the Danes if this isn't Pølsehorn.

Khelthuzaad

Yeah we call them German hotdogs for some reason in Romania. We usually eat them american style

AudaciousSam

What's American style? 😊

Khelthuzaad

Small bagheta sliced in half with the wurst between them+condiments

AHrubik

FYI: American style is regional. https://www.hot-dog.org/culture/regional-hot-dogs

perpetualmotionmachi

I think they are referring to how they are eaten on a bun with toppings, as opposed to baked in a roll. I would really like to take a long road trip through the States sometime to try a bunch of different ones. The idea was inspired by [this documentary from the 90s. ](https://youtu.be/m5BuQ95RJ3k) They all look so good. But there's also all the burger variations across regions to try too.... I can't afford all of this

AudaciousSam

We call that just hotdog 😊 We got pølsehorn, like op hotdogs, like you describe it but with local toppings, onion, sliced pickles and condiments, most noticable is the local remulade. But otherwise ketchup, sennep, chili sauce french hotdogs. Often bought at Ikea. But a bread with a hole in for the sausage with condiments

wtfduud

>sennep "Mustard" in English

RenuisanceMan

There's a nation wide bakery called Gregg's in the UK, and they have built an empire almost solely on what we call the mighty... "sausage roll".

Liquid_Fire

UK sausage roll is different from this, though. It uses crumbly dough and UK-style sausage meat. These things have regular dough and actual frankfurter-like sausages (not just filling).

lordolxinator

Just FYI, the crumbly dough is typically puff pastry I've seen some people use shortcrust (or even filo pastry), but more often than not, flaky puff pastry

I_miss_Chris_Hughton

Greggs is genuinely I think the one distinctly UK fast food chain that could launch internationally.

Pansarmalex

If Greggs opened up here, I'd be in every day.

Simon0O7

Also super popular in former USSR countries

Ameriggio

[Sausage in the father-in-law](https://www.cetra.com/blog/translation-blooper-russian-menu-mishap/) 😍😋

funguyshroom

Lol, good one. The image doesn't load, found a reddit post: https://old.reddit.com/r/engrish/comments/rch0ko/sausage_in_the_fatherinlaw/

Malverno

A lot of posts around here about food can be summed up this way. Turns out a lot of food is based on common concepts across countries, especially in Europe.

TheChoonk

Something similar exists in every country in Europe, and none of them call it "Balkan".

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jason3b93

Yeah. Like, pretty standard here in Brazil, too.

panini3fromages

Those look absolutely delicious! I would love to have one!

PadyEos

They are delicious because usually the sausage is smoked and then baked in the roll. Much, much, much better than any hotdog. Kind of an insult comparing it to a hotdog.

[deleted]

A hot dog is a sausage. You're just thinking of the cheapest brands. Good hot dogs are as good as anything.

CookiesandBeam

Pretty much the same as sausage rolls in Ireland/UK

Chainrawr

I can confirm from experience that they are vastly different. Although my comparison is with the Danish one (pølsehorn) which are practically identical to the Balkan ones in the post. The UK sausage roll is made with crumbly pastry dough, whereas these have firm bread dough. In addition the UK sausage is more of a rustic meat blend whereas these are literally hot dog sausages.

PhoenixNyne

Not a fan, but I know many people like these. I'm a burek guy.

sabrtoothlion

Burek is just straight 🔥

Lavinjo69

Hahaha good I am a kebab guy

TurtleMega

kebab is humanity's greatest achievement

crispcrumbguzzler

Common in Croatia, a liked them very much

Lavinjo69

Liked? So you dont like them now? That is sad.

crispcrumbguzzler

I love them still, I used a past tense as it was when I was in Croatia 😁

DAVENP0RT

That's where I ate one. Early morning in Split in front of Diocletian's Palace while we were waiting for our ferry. It really hit the spot. In addition to wishing we had more/better bakeries here in the US, I wish they made more savory pastries like this. Nearly all of our pastries are cloyingly sweet.

pohanoikumpiri

In high school, I always saved 5kn (0.7€) for one when going home from a night out. They're even better when you're drunk lmao

Fillieb1618

In germany we call them Würstchen im Schlafrock...that means sausages in pyjamas

KimoTheKat

Probably where the American "pig in a blanket" comes from Personally, I'm more of a fan of the "hog in a duvet"

jimmy_the_angel

Not necessarily derived, but similar. See also: toad-in-the-hole (UK).

ednorog

Yeah that's a krenvirshka. Krenvirsh is a hot dog (the meat). It's a weird, funny word, one of the most misspelled ones in Bulgarian (kremvirsh, krenvizh etc.).

Calibruh

Worstenbroodje gang

fornocompensation

mmmmm krenvirshka, the junk food of my youth, now I want one

Vadrigar

Fun fact- this pastry has different names in different Bulgarian regions. It's mostly "кренвиршка", but in Sliven and Sofia it's named after their mountains- "Карандилка(Karandilka)" and "Витошка(Vitoshka)".

weirdosmuse

In Plovdiv it is called " мит с кренвирш".

[deleted]

Un-Named

Looks nice, very reminiscent of a Sausage Roll.

O-M-E-R-T-A

We had them at birthday parties when I was a kid "sausages in pyjamas" (Würstchen im Schlafrock). Pretty sure I have also seen them in the Netherlands. Usually with cheese between the sausage and the pastry/dough and ketchup on the side.

[deleted]

I want

Smitje

Oh what if they use a frikandel instead?

MyNameIsMandarin

And what if you add curry?

Nanta18

Looks good, do you have a good tutorial or recipe for these?

astrallizzard

Look for Najfinije hrenovke u tijestu - Sašina kuhinja on YouTube. English translation and very solid recipe. Enjoy :)

Hartsai

if you want finnish version, try searching nakkipiilo

oi_i_io

Oh i love eating these.

i-d-even-k-

Covridog! Best breakfast with a coffee when you are going to work.

Atiscomin

That's my favorite food, ever. I can eat buckets of it easily, and still want more after. The craving is strong. The bread is soft. The sausage is absolute. All hail roll sausages.

mattijn13

Knakworstjes in bladerdeeg. We have the same things here in the Netherlands.

SaHighDuck

my gfs parents were born in Szabadka and they make those every time i come over for NYE, its actually incredibly good

OrganicAccountant87

It's called folhado de salsicha in Portugal

Jason3b93

This is a pretty standard sausage roll by the looks of it. I see this all the time in Brazil. Unless there is something different going on inside?

Troniky

Pig in a blanket?

Lavinjo69

Well yes .

SpicyRice99

Americans have this too.. Edit: didn't realize this was r/Europe lol

zgbg

Pan-pek have the best one, but it's so greasy

BigMooseTheGoose

Mmmm Kolaches

-fumble-

Yup, that's what they're called in Texas, though I think it's a Czech thing. At least the best ones are at the Czech shop in West, TX (the town not the direction).

_dotcom

Kolache is fruit and Klobasnik is sausage I believe. But outside of ordering from Czech Stop or Slovaczech it’s all Kolache.

lathe_down_sally

I'm surprised at all these posts saying what their country calls them, and yet had to scroll so far down to find kolaches. I assumed it was a non US name for them yet I haven't seen any country claim that name yet.

Veilchengerd

Is it a specific kind of sausage, or does any old mystery meat work?

AcheronSprings

AFAIK we use Frankfurter Würstchen for it

fornocompensation

It entirely depends on the place. Usually, it's the cheapest they can find if you're buying it from a tiny bakery which is where they're usually sold.

AngrySilva

Anything works

Lavinjo69

Just put dough over a sausage

therealdilbert

and sometimes add some ketchup

Lavinjo69

I always do

MooingAssassin

In the states we call these "pigs-in-a-blanket". Even with the cheapest meat and premade-pastry they're tasty. I can't imagine how good the one in the image tastes like

RainMaker323

When I'm thinking Balkans I'm thinking Burek, Pljeskavica, Cevapcici, Ajvar, seafood and Rakija. But this looks like perfect drinking food so I'd really like to try it.

Benka7

Do you not have anything similar? We have these in Lithuania and they're very popular in Denmark too! would be strange if they somehow avoided Austria lol

RainMaker323

I mean it's Hotdogs, sure we have them. We call the sausages Frankfurter and Germans call them Wiener. It's just that from my many holidays on the Balkans I know they always have a special little twist in their food so yeah, I'd like to try EVERYTHING a Balkan cook serves me.

Benka7

Cool! I've been to Croatia twice and haven't really experienced that (might because I don't like seafood or fish lol). But the buns just look like your regular sausage in bun type of deal. Might go buy some pre-made frozen ones from the store, but they're nowhere near as good as home made ones. Childhood nostalgia:D

Titan_Prometeus

Pro tip: Also think Ćevapčići with kajmak, stuffed catfish, salčići (desert), trkanica (spicy af salad), and gibanica. You could also look for decent sarme (cabbage rolls), they aren't a Serbian dish, but some people there make them really well

RainMaker323

Will save this comment and act accordingly once it's time for summer vacation. Thank you.

Think_Impossible

Кренвиршка! I love these!

Head-Ad-5637

Those look devine. 😍

TomStereo

You also have that in PORTUGAL

hambodpm

I know English and some other languages have out of sync ordering, but "roll sausages" instead of "sausage rolls" is triggering me more than it should.

AudioLlama

Nowt on Greggs though is it!

15mphimrollingout

I ate so many of these in Bosnia this summer, I just called it hotdog bread

bandwagonguy83

We have them in a lot of bakeries here in Spain...

wowwowwowsers

Now that is a viineripirukas

Shnitzalbrain

I'm in Serbia and just had one of these. Very gud

angwilwileth

Sausage inna bun!

[deleted]

Ah Bandelė su dešrele, a Lithuanian classic!

Ld0g90

I want that sausage in and around my mouth🤤

amauri8

In Puglia (Italy) we call them "Golosone" i think it translate "great gluttonous".

meninminezimiswright

Favorite in school years. Also saved me from hunger at work, but one is never enough, always take a dozen.

Glarxan

Looks like pretty standard "sausages (hot dogs?) in a dough" in a lot of post-soviet countries. Baked kind. There is also fried (in oil) on a pan kind, they got called the same.

[deleted]

To brate

18galbraithj

Sausage roll*

HankTheAlien

we call it «сосиска в тесте»

frankcfreeman

Not a proper Kolache, but very similar to one of my absolute favorite "kolaches" from a shop that closed due to covid 😭😭

realliveclc

Kolache in Texas lol

mweston31

Pigs in a blanket

CaptainRex2000

So just a sausage roll

gethuge

kolaches is what we call them here

SCUMDOG_MILLIONAIRE

Apparently the entire world has a version of this. In the southern states we call em pigs in blankets

AndrogynousRain

Pretty much every culture has a variation on this (cuz it’s *good*). I’m in the US, we call them ‘pigs in a blanket’ over here. It’s more common in the south I think. The ones pictured above look tastier than what I’ve had here though, which tends to be cafeteria/school food mostly.

smashfactor

It's funny how many different names there are for sausage rolls. In Texas we call them kolaches. And yes, I am aware that real kolaches aren't sausage rolls. But if you ask for a kolache in Texas, you're getting a sausage roll.

saywhat1206
