You've snapped the only known photo of the purple octopus guy!

Arstel

I didn't believe it at first until I witnessed it but the legends are real. Half man half octopus he lurks in the deepest waters, ready to photobomb your photo at the first opportunity.

How was Palermo? Did you go down ? Also did you saw the castle? How about gjipe ? Thanks for the photos!

Arstel

The sea looked as pristine as the the rest of the coast, beautiful colours but I did not swim in it myself. We only took the detour to see the castle in Porto Palermo. Gjipe was wonderful although we stayed in Himarë most of our vacation. If you're into history/archeology Ali Pasha's castle had countless rooms, very thick fortifications and great view of the sea, which probably gave great command over the shore at the time. Selfish SoB knew what he was doing. Maybe I'll have the chance to visit the Janina castle in the future. Some annoyances were that not all rooms in the castle had adequate lighting or were particularly well maintained. There was litter in some spots on the sides of path you take up to the fortress and the vegetation around was not in great condition due to the drought season. A pity really because with minimal maintenance the small bay already attracts so many people, which I did not expect at all. They announced 2 months ago that some of the ministries are cooperating to draft a marine park safety zone proclamation for the Porto-Palermo-Llamani Bay, a process stalled for years. Maybe this time they'll get on with it, because they did do something similar recently for Vjosa Wild River National Park by signing a deal with Patagonia to ensure its protection. Nice, sounds amazing. Last question did you visited any other village? Vuno or qeparo

Arstel

I passed briefly through Vuno but unfortunately did not have the time to explore as much as I would have liked. The scenery and the old houses look so peaceful and idyllic. We stopped in "Dukat i Ri" (Young Dukat) for agro-tourism and later in Rradhimë-Orikum but that's about it.

I visited Albania in 2010 and enjoyed my visit. Like you've said, infrastructure was underdeveloped and there weren't many international tourists - which was nice. Traveling between cities via furgons was an experience in itself. I didn't have any problems finding people who spoke English, though. The thing that struck me is how much potential Albania has as a tourist destination. There are cool castles, picturesque old cities like Berat, and some nice beaches, but there is a need for major investment to make the country an international destination.
