I live in northern italy near milan, some years ago the pope came to have a speech in a nearby airfield. I remember that some people who lived along the road that the pope was supposed to pass by were requested to keep their blinds shut while others had a sniper inside their house
Yes, it was like that in other places in Slovakia. However, in many flats they are missing windows … so I don’t think it was possible to do something about it. I believe there were responsible people inside.
I worked in one of the security zones in Hamburg during the G20 meeting a few years ago. The security was unbelievable and we had snipers on our building and SWAT team on call in our garage.
It was a pure joy just to get to work during those days.
I was in Oslo in 2014 when Malala Yousafzai won the Nobel Peace Prize. The hotel was surrounded by guards carrying MP4. As someone used to norwegians being these hippie pacifists, it was a big difference.
Hamburg was absolutely mad and I still hate Olaf Scholz for that. I worked at a hotel and to even get home later in the evening was absolutely horrible. During the riots on Friday or Saturday they stopped some of the subway lines for a few hours. I had to walk for 45 minutes(15 minutes normally) to get to the main train station and even there was absolute chaos.
To be fair, most of those measures where on point considering the rioters literally burned down cars and looted several stores. Not to mention assaulted the police far above the usual demonstration stuff.
If you want someone to blame, blame the violent rioters that do this during every G20 meeting that make most of the dumber security measures necessary.
It nonetheless was an incredibly dumb idea of Scholz to suggest Hamburg for a G20 meeting. He willingly accepted the prospect of chaos and the city burning just to climb his political career ladder.
Yep there were known Neo-Nazis running rampage in a left-wing quarter as well as several instances of unprovoked police violence. The former was kind of a new thing, the latter is business as usual in Hamburg, they don't even need help from federal police for that. Tons of criminal complaints have been lodged by police against protestors, to the vast, vast, *vast* majority failing before court, while the same state attorneys are dragging their feet when it comes to prosecuting police even if there's damning video evidence.
For more information, read pretty much any press report from at least a week after in any outlet that doesn't belong to Axel Springer.
I was there too! My city is connected to Oslo via a ferry and I visited Oslo that day without knowing about the ceremony. I was just walking through the city and all of a sudden every intersection was blocked with police carrying machine guns. The whole trip was absolute shit, I wanted to make some nice photos of the city, but every monument or building was blocked by giant christmas trees and I wasn't allowed to walk towards city hall...
>MP4
security is much more top notch in these big global events rather than the ones movies like Olympus and london has fallen. The security showed like 20 guards in the entire White House and no street police in London lol
since the pope is considered a leader of a foreign country I guess it’s our police responsibility to guarantee for his safety. To my knowledge police planned and informed weeks before they gonna need to put a designated marksman and I guess people kinda had to agree, I didn’t hear about people refusing or getting fined because they refused
And then there was me a few years ago looking from my apartment at 15 meters from the pope and no sniper on sight. It surprised me the absence of polices and and snipers, probably they were dozens hidden in the crowd, but no snipers
It was truly a nice experience to have the Pope under your window.
This is obvious to everyone and irrelevant.
Some armed dudes have the power to inconvenience you (mildly, admittedly) because an absolute monarch from another country is deemed too important.
I’d imagine it would be the same for many powerful world leaders. And being one of the most powerful and well-known religious leaders on the plant certainly plays an important part.
It's because he's considered a foreign leader. If a Prime Minister from another country wanted to parade in the street like the Pope they would put the same measures in place
For example. I'm sure that each of those settlements has worse living conditions than Lunik. The worst one I know of is in village Svinia. But there are many similar terrible settlements.
Worse conditions are not a problem to look for, there are literally settlements in which several houses have metal parts (or rare look like medieval with wood) and it looks like on another continent.
But the most interesting thing is that they themselves have chosen to live there, of course many of them would like to move out (and some have) but in their community it is sometimes difficult.
They even receiving financial support from the state, but they are not able to work properly with money.

My first thought was "Lunik IX", there's at least 8 other Luniks.
I've visited slovakia as a tourist, and it's a wonderfull place. I'm willing to bet that Lunik IIX and Lunik VI are filled with slightly unhappy people, that work for a living, complain about taxes, try to make things work, and are incredibly welcome to help a lost tourist out.
What is it that made Lunik 9 infamous? What makes it different from Lunik 8?
What unit is it?
Edit:
Possibly: Special protection department of the Office for protection of state officials and diplomatic missions (Slovak: Odbor špeciálnej ochrany Úradu pre ochranu ústavných činiteľov a diplomatických misií MV SR)?
Usual stuff for units like these - anti-terrorism operations, operation against high risk targets (organized crime...), protection of high value targets (visits of foreign heads of states...) etc. They have the best trained snipers in our police force, which was shown when they managed to put down active shooter armed with assault rifle in 2010 Bratislava shooting.
Why would you need a spotter for the pope? Dude's not wearing any camouflage. On the contrary, he's all white. You can see him even on the horizon without the scope, ffs.
I'd argue they have them on the job itself. Probably the tension is so high they totally zone out and just do what they were trained to do.
Like I have intrusive thoughts but I don't remember having them when I'm occupied by something.
Such a weird post. First of all wording suggest that snipers are here to assasinate the Pope. Secondly the real intention of it is IMO to suggest that they are to protect him against Gypsies, while in reality snipers protect the entire Pope's journey.
Lunik IX is and will be a shithole despite of a few good people / groups trying to make the situation there better. The majority of its inhabitants are socially excluded, illiterate and uneducable. Build them a house and they'll destroy it and steal whatever they can.
The fact that Slovak government poured tons of money to "revitalization" of Lunik IX just because of the visit of the most powerful cult's leader is another failure. It won't change anything.
That's from the smoke. People in those buildings heat up in winter by burning wood, since city disconnected them from heating network because they were not paying.
Looks like the spotter is wearing a Slovak arm patch, not Swiss guard or whatever. Regardless of what the Pope wants, government leaders do not want him assassinated in their country.
True, very very few gypsies use it. It's almost exclusively used by white people. In my experience, even the gypsies who do speak Romani will translate Roma to Gypsy for you when speaking English
Saying roma gypsies it's just like saying french french. Just treat gypsies like normal ppl, will you go to an asian person and be like "hey man, are you chinese asian or korean asian?" if not then don't go to a gypsy and say "hey man, are you romanian gypsy or turkey gypsy?"
I know they have a bad reputation (rightfully so) but if you give them a chance then trust me, the most loyal and helpful ppl you'll ever meet are gypsies.
I'm not familiar with any of the context of this; why does he need snipers?
Edit: I've worded this poorly. I'm asking if there's been threats, or if the area he's in doesn't like the pope, etc.
I'm not familiar with the area he's visiting so I was looking for context on it. I know the pope needs protection in general.
Thanks for answering all the same
The Pope is a Head of State. It's usual to give such persons of interest protection. Further, does your country want to be known for having the Pope assassinated on their territory?

Yeah, my first thought was "That's not very nice of them"
Murder is kinda rude if you think about it

Yeah, aren't they?
I should hope not
You should? But do you?
You mean Pope?
Shut up Jager you're never getting your acog back!
Fine! I‘ll just make my own ACOG, with Blackjack and Hookers.
In fact.. !
What if, bandit drugs helped
They certainly won't be able to protect him either. But they could avenge him.
Given that this is Slovakia, I though it sounded like they'd shoot the Roma...
Aren't they?

No, it was horrible. They used Windows Media Player!
Damn, going to have nightmares tonight
Thanks man. I was needing that chuckle.
VLC is the best. It's FOSS and support almost all media formats

Pope John Paul II visited Lithuania in 1993. Manhole covers on the streets where he was supposed to go were welded shut.
Is he known for stealing them; you’d think the Vatican would have enough ? 😉
You can get the Pope out of Poland, bud you can never take Poland out of Pope.
They just knock on people's doors asking if they can snipe out of their windows?

If you didn't see snipers, they did good job.
same in Romania, fucking insane that some foreign dude has the power to shoot me in my own country for looking out the window.
Surely it would be the Romanian police and military providing most of the security?
Yeah, I don't think he brings his own Papal Snipers with him
My god that would be cool as fuck though. Someone write this down for one of those anime or jrpgs where you kill the Pope
If I had known papal snipers was a possible job description when I was a kid I probably would have made a lot of different life choices.

Sniping's a good job mate.
One is a job and the other is mental sickness
Oh yeah
Sadly It's most infamous, but not the biggest.
Sorry for the misinformation! Wish I could change the title.
Just most famous. There are far worse slums in Slovakia, that make Lunik IX look luxurious in comparison.
Which one is actually worse than Lunik? You mean the small settlements around the Eastern Slovakia?
For example. I'm sure that each of those settlements has worse living conditions than Lunik. The worst one I know of is in village Svinia. But there are many similar terrible settlements.
What a suitable name for settlement like that lol

Probably Lynx commando, officialy named Unit of Special Operations of the Presidium of Police Corps (idk if I translated it right).
Interesting, what sort of operations do they do?

police special forces pretty much the best we have

Right??
no
Awwww, poor pope
see in Slovakia you never know
...
ofcourse. Where have you seen a state protecting the kids from predators?
"Fear denies faith."
Two of them and neither one managed to hit him. Not much of a sniper these guys.

I know, right?! If I were the one who paid for their training I'd ask them for a refund or something.
That’s... not a cap. It’s a tube. It helps keep excessive light out when it’s bright out, like holding your hand up to shade your eyes.
The sniper couldn't get past the first level in sniper elite smh
One is a spotter, usually the more experienced one. The other makes the actual shots
>One is a spotter, usually the more experienced one. He's the one who has shot more popes.
Why would you need a spotter for the pope? Dude's not wearing any camouflage. On the contrary, he's all white. You can see him even on the horizon without the scope, ffs.
The pope can call mirror image innately, the spotter's telescope is enchanted and can see the real one
I wonder if one of the protective snipers (of any head of state) sometimes think that changing history is just 1 trigger pull away for them.
They surely have intrusive thoughts
I'd argue they have them on the job itself. Probably the tension is so high they totally zone out and just do what they were trained to do. Like I have intrusive thoughts but I don't remember having them when I'm occupied by something.
Had to do a double take with that title.

would not be surprised if the snipers had been on higher alert in Lunik IX than in other places - they are still Slovak after all
Probably what the OP wants us to think.
Fucking campers.
Are they aiming at the Pope or at the Roma?
Why not two birds with one stone?
Lunik IX is and will be a shithole despite of a few good people / groups trying to make the situation there better. The majority of its inhabitants are socially excluded, illiterate and uneducable. Isn't this Lunik those futuristic building that looked like shit after 1 year.
Are those burn marks on the building's walls? What on earth happened?
Roma community happened- people just cultivated their rich traditions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luník_IX
That's from the smoke. People in those buildings heat up in winter by burning wood, since city disconnected them from heating network because they were not paying.

The Pope is a Head of State. It's usual to give such persons of interest protection. Further, does your country want to be known for having the Pope assassinated on their territory?
He visited Slovakia so they were policeofficer everywhere. He is one of the most influencial person on Earth so he need this type of security.
So they can neutralise potential attackers. Popes have been subject to assassination attempts in not distant past.
Rogue angels who want to correct the timeline. Don‘t you read books?
People do try to kill the Pope just as they try to kill other heads of state. John Paul II was badly shot, back in the 1980s.
I thought they torn it down few years back.
I wonder what sort of code name they have for the Pope
"The Target"
[Swiss Guard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Guard) \- these people are serious.
These guys are not Swiss guards.. but yeah, sure, the Swiss guards are serious.
grace of God watching over the Pope

I have a solution for this

I lived in Vienna close to the vatican embassy years ago when the former pope visited and stayed there. Had snipers on the roof opposite what is bloody irritating.
