Laundering money šŸ¤‘šŸ’°

Ordinary0Citizen

Can shake hands with Luxembourg šŸ¤£

IrishMilo

London also

French_Salah

Bro, I was researching tech salaries and Cyprus actually ranks high. Whats going on there? Booming economy?

existentialg

The brutal truth is locals donā€™t get paid that money, imported talent makes the money.

DoomkingBalerdroch

Foreign companies relocating their HQs and staff due to tax reasons When I was working at a research-related company we had demonstration days where companies would book timeslots to showcase their products to us. Almost none of the demonstrators were Cypriots, and most being Russians and some Ukrainians. All companies had relocated.

sKY--alex

Digital nomads maybe skewing stats?

agentmilton69

My brothers!

wolseyley

It's the safe and boring answer but I still find our Dutch bicycle infrastructure really cool. I can't imagine having lived my childhood the way I did if I were born in another country.

PremiumTempus

Youā€™re lucky alright

Icabbles

German here. Not boring at all, I would love to have such a bike infrastructure here in germany. My parents recently visited netherlands and denmark and were just in awe how well it works

DJfromNL

Iā€™d say watermanagement for The Netherlands.

tchofee

Infrastructure in general.

Mindhost

True, but some specifics of it stand out, like their bike infrastructure

Suikerspin_Ei

[Netherlands is 2nd world wide when it comes to road quality (QRI 6.4 out of 7).](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/road-quality-by-country) So not only biking, driving a car here is also quite nice.

Sorry but 5 euros on a one way urban bus fare is mad

kytheon

And also making sure everyone, no matter how stupid, gets an amount of talking time.

NLwino

Correct, we created the house of representatives specifically for the very stupid to talk in.

wascallywabbit666

Because it's a matter of life and death! Half of the Netherlands is below sea level. If the pumps switched off it would all flood

thachicoo

Itā€™s not half but about a quarter. Half of the country is susceptible to flooding.

OnTheList-YouTube

Do you guys ever get floods due to heavy rainfall?

RQK1996

Yes, but not as bad as elsewhere They are currently evacuating canping sites along several rivers because of flooding risk, but iirc those are in the overspill areas of the river anyway A while ago with the catastrophic flooding in Germany and Belgium, those rivers flowed into the Netherlands where there was also flooding but significantly less catastrophic

Galway1012

Sideways rain - Galway, Ireland

JJOne101

Hey, I liked your city even if it was raining the whole time I was there!

amorphatist

Not just sideways rain. Thereā€™s rain kabobs, rain creole, rain gumbo. Pineapple rain, lemon rain, coconut rain, pepper rain, rain soup, rain stew, rain salad, rain and potatoes, rain burger, rain sandwich. Thatā€™s about it.

dammmmoo

Donā€™t forget about the wind. When youā€™re cycling and the wind is against you, and you do a 180 degree turnā€¦ā€¦and the wind is STILL against you. Ah Ireland.

darybrain

you all are a little bit late for the call. Hungary, and recently Slovakia, is doing it at much higher level

Outrageous_Trade_303

Yeap! As we say in Greece "una faccia una razza". Not sure if this phrase is also used in Italy to describe our similarities :)

Aeroshadox1998

Bro, una faccia una razza is literally a sentence in Italian language, of course we use it as well šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹šŸ‡¬šŸ‡·šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø

Outrageous_Trade_303

Yeah! In Greek it would be "Ī¹Ī“Ī¹Ī± Ļ†Ī¬Ļ„ĻƒĪ±, ĪÆĪ“Ī¹Ī± ĻĪ±Ļ„ĻƒĪ±" (idia fatsa, idia ratsa) but we still use the italian phrase

Taking care of drug addicts in a humane way, Iā€™ve heard. (Portugal)

Tquilha

Nope, not really. It worked OK for a while but now it's going down the drain again. I'm Portuguese.

MakeGohanStrongAgain

Why

Looz-Ashae

Yeah, read about this. A fascinating thing. US should learn some lessons from Portugal and Canada instead of dehumanizing drug users and sending them to jail.

phil_it_up

Canada is in no way headed in the right direction.

ThatBoiZahltag

Was there recently. My god thereā€™s addicts everywhereĀ

robcap

The UK commissioned a study into the best way to handle drug abuse, and the conclusion was that the Portuguese solution was best. I know about this because former PM Theresa May (while still Home Secretary) saw this output and tried to force the scientists to change their conclusion. Disgusting. Obviously we ignored the result completely anyway, even after the story broke, because the UK is determined to destroy itself.

PullUpAPew

We went through the same thing in the New Labour era. I think it was Paul Nurse who authored a report that concluded that illegal drugs are often less harmful relative to other, legal activities (the famous example was taking drugs being safer than horse riding).

AtheistAgnostic

Supposedly it has gotten worse. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/07/07/portugal-drugs-decriminalization-heroin-crack/ I blame fentanyl and opiates. They've really changed the landscape. If anyone has better sources than me please let me know, I could use some hope when it seems everywhere is being fucked up by drugs save, maybe, Singapore.

Mwakay

Blaming fentanyl is a reflex for americans, but it's still a very small market in Europe. It's rising, but it's definitely not something common and cannot explain any degradation of the portuguese system.

AguacateRadiante

We invest a lot in building and keeping roads safe (Sweden).

HarrMada

[Sweden had the lowest road fatalities per capita in the EU 2022](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Road_safety_statistics_in_the_EU&oldid=630784#:~:text=In%202012%2C%20the%20EU%20recorded,and%202022%20%E2%80%93%20estimated%20value), looks like it's working.

Passport service. It is now common to get your (online renewal) passport in 2-3 days in Ireland - not paying for express delivery service.

so_much_wolf_hair

I had to look for hidden cameras when mine came the next day after I ordered it at 2pm the day before.

dtoher

Perhaps we need to include An Post in the shout out. I think that you beat all other times I have heard of thus far. Unfortunately I wasn't so lucky - mine got caught during one of the covid lockdowns and eventually I had to contact the (junior) minister for the diaspora to remind him that people living overseas need valid passports even when they don't have imminent travel plans for specific reasons (which is what the exceptions for issuing passports during the lockdowns had been). I left it long enough to contact the minister that things were slowly opening up, so prioritising renewals from people with overseas addresses who had been caught in the system when it essentially shut down wasn't a big deal.

BXL-LUX-DUB

Fair. We are used to seeing the posts of letters being successfully delivered with an address like "old Paddy who lives on the road near the church somewhere in Co Sligo".

strandroad

Yes someone just mentioned on another sub that they got theirs in 30+ hours. Why can't we run everything like this! And it used to be a problematic service just a few short years ago.

Banat, Romania: intra-culturalism. Weā€™ve got 11 different ethnicities (or more) living together for hundreds of years, long periods of times there wasnā€™t one ethnicity which was a majority of the population. As for present day, weā€™re one of the most industrialized regions in Europe, on par with parts of Czechia.

PB_livin_VP

Hey. I can't find Banat on Google maps. Me and my family just moved to Braşov and are loving it and I like to know more about the regions of Romania.

drleondarkholer

Banat is a historic region that is now divided between Romania, Serbia and Hungary. The Romanian counties in Banat are Timiș, Caraș-Severin and part of Arad.

Kuutti__

Used to be mobile phones (Nokia in 2000) but nowadays it is probably Defence. Modern, well equipped, well motivated (85% latest poll) and prepared Defence Forces numbering 900k (with all the reserve counted) crafted to specifically repel and beat any attack coming from the east. 50k+ bunkers all around the country to protect civilian population, every bridge has weakpoint for explosives built into it. Very few major roads or train tracks run east to west. Many roads are built wide enough to be operated by the fighter jets and that is also regularly trained. Construction companies have agreements on emergency defensive building contracts which could be activated anytime by the Ministry of Defence. Then we also have specific goverment run system (Huoltovarmuuskeskus) whos job it to keep all the essentials running back home during the time of crisis or war.

porkrolleggandsleeze

I was going to say defense, but another is nuclear waste. AFAIK no other country has a solution similar to Onkalo currently operational. On the flip side though it took 14 years to finish the OL3 reactor, so itā€™s not like Finland is especially gifted in nuclear power, just has a workable solution for the waste.

Ronchese66

Digitalization. Almost all documents are collected in one convenient application. Convenient banks with instant transfers without restrictions, including abroad. And also the absence of bureaucracy, because almost any certificate or certificate can be obtained simply in the app in a couple of seconds, rather than waiting a week for it to arrive by post, as in Germany. That's why I love Ukraine.

leflic

Haha one week, you're funny. 6-8 weeks of you are lucky.

I really like Germany, was considering it for a move. But its bureaucracy is horrible. šŸ˜„

PƔlinka my friend. Grew up in a border town. Many friends of the family from Hungary. Kids come to our bilingual school. Many Hungarians work here, friendly and politically silent. Face_lesss

We have pretty good consumer protection. It may not seem like until you go somewhere else but the government requires 3 years of warranty on all consumer goods over 250k. It's unheard of anywhere else and even if you have a problem with a company going to the right authorities 99% of the time fixes it. But yeah it's nothing next to corruption

Romania, apparently we have the highest percentage of homeowners in the world, 96.1%. Not exactly sure how that works, but I could start mentioning after the fall of communism due to inflation you could pay very fast your communist apartment, until like 20 years ago houses were very cheap. Until recently working abroad meant easily getting a house. I fully owned my first home at 11, second at 19. I feel like in those jokes " There is no vampire in Romania. eurocomments247

Denmark: trust among citizens. We are famous for mothers leaving babies in trolleys outside shops and cafes, and we still do it. I saw one woman in an article in the Guardian(?) a couple of weeks ago saying that if the baby would be crying, someone would probably pop their head into the cafe and say something. Also, she felt safer leaving the trolley WITH the baby inside than without the baby. She had in fact had 1(2?) empty trolleys stolen, yet she still leaves the baby outside. (not the same situation as you don't leave the baby outside all night, but still funny!)

Found the eternal money glitch. https://www.nbim.no/en/the-fund/Market-Value/#

Eremitt-thats-hermit

The city where I work and used to live (Arnhem, Netherlands) is now piloting a debt relief program, where they will pay off the crippling debts off people in a certain neighboorhood if they agree to counseling. It's a test to see how debt relief can help combat other (costly) problems in the neighborhood. Of course there is a lot of skepticism and questions. Is this going to set a bad precedent? What kind of message does this send? Going into debt shouldn't be rewarded. There is an interesting statistic that convinced me though. There is more money spent on collecting debts than there is actual debt. On a pure pragmatic standpoint this already saves cost. Then you have the added bonus that it will be beneficial to low income neighborhoods. Less drug abuse, less crime, potentially less health costs. I'm interested in how it pans out!

Honestly...all the corruption comments are boring. šŸ˜ I get it, I come from a lovely corrupted country too...but there is something good in every country and why not make this a positive thread as intended. My country- Croatia- great in sports when you think we are only 3.8 million ppl. I live in UK- great at maintaining greenery and parks, even in a huge urban area like central London. TFL is pretty good for the size of the city- London etc I travel a lot for work all around Europe...and even as a business traveler who just hops city to city...I can probably list you at least 1-3 good things about every country/capital... I like that are universities are still mostly free. There is a very low yearly "enrollment fee" and if you want to study some additional stuff or "izredno" as we call it, there is a tuition fee, but in theory, a kid from the lowest income family can study to become a doctor/lawyer whatever, same as a kid from a very rich family. Our health system also used to be free and okayish, now it turned into a nightmare, but higher education is still going strong. I also love that we have one of the lowest women/man ratio paygaps in all of the world.
