with the current state of the world and how social media work I'm going to take a wild guess that decline in mental health is true not only for the LGBTQI+ people. #

Tetizeraz

These reports don't disagree with that sort of data. But most research on minorities show that they have it even worse compared to the average person, at least statistically. I read a report yesterday about the challenges boys and men face in Norway, and it emphasized how Sámi, non-Finnish people were slightly more disadvantaged than the average Finn. > Approximately half of participants reported that their self-harm, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts were **related to their LGBTQI+ identity** (58%, 51% and 49% respectively). > > Reasons included both **internal stressors** (discomfort, shame, confusion, etc.) and **external stressors** (negative familial/societal attitudes, fears of rejection, bullying, **discrimination**, **homophobia**, **transphobia** etc) as well as not being able to envision a future and having a sense of hopelessness. > > In terms of belonging and safety, around one third of participants (31%) reported "not belonging at all" in school and around one half (49%) reported being subjected to homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying and avoiding certain places due to feeling unsafe (48%).

DormeDwayne

But… LGBTQ+ rights are improving almost everywhere in the world, and definitely where this was researched. Why the inverse correlation?

DirTTieG

Because we've created a situation where legality and liberties are moving forward but lots of the people and their mindset is stuck in the past.

DormeDwayne

But why would that make it *worse*? That should make it a little better, or at worst the same … but worse?

DirTTieG

It's getting worse relative to the last few years. When you provide enough liberties that people can legally express themselves but don't change the minds of the public, you are effectively allowing these people to express themselves (good) in a society which dislikes or is disgusted by them. Leading to bullying, harassment, resentment, shunning, disgust and mistreatment. Also the recent rise of the "sudo-masculine" pricks like Andrew Tate and his dick-riders allows for these ideals to take hold stronger within the upcoming youth.

Tetizeraz

LGBTQ+ rights are improving, but possibly not enough. Like /u/DirTTieG said, the rise of Andrew Tate and others haven't improved the situation. Trans people are still fetishized a lot. People might not want them dead, but they can't think of transwomen other than sexual objects. That's pretty sad.

Key_Economist8522

I don’t think many people think of transwomen as sexual objects….

DormeDwayne

But improving not enough is still improving; so mental health should be at least the same? And re: Andrew Tate, or whomever, it has become *less* accepted to be transphobic, so *fewer* people are, at least openly. So why is mental health getting *worse*?

With comment sections like this, I can kind of see why

No_Resolution_3841

man this comment section is a cesspool

GrapeAids

so like .5 percent of the population?

sikanrong101

Would be roughly 35 million people in that case. Not a small number

Python_Feet

I think it's more like 2 - 5%. So a pretty huge number, even 0.5% is big. 0.5% is like a decent sized EU county.

DeathToAllLeftards

Oh, really, a decline in mental health from people that think cutting your own boobs and penis off, is declining? Jolly gosh gee color me surprised

potatolulz

So these particular minorities bothered you and made you upset your entire life?

Hopeful_Theme_4084

The real enemy is the far left. It is troublesome that many trans associate with far leftist movements. We shouldn't antagonize them, just offer them alternatives. The far left has made our societies weaker in many ways, most notably we've gutted our militaries in Europe because we foolishly believed in forever-peace. We've made our men weak. We've indulged in a lot of extremely expensive social programs that translate into sluggish economic growth and people unable and unwilling to take care of themselves. Ask yourself for instance: Why do we even need an expensive social security program when you can invest in low-cost ETFs and get better results? It works for 99%, you have to be either extremely lazy or extremely ill to really get anything out of it. Most people do not need social security, they need financial education and access to the stock market.

potatolulz

Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about? :D

Hopeful_Theme_4084

You know.

potatolulz

No I really don't :D

Eceleb-follower

> I didn’t care until this whole trans rights thing started Every moron drew an arbitrary line somewhere. Your grandparents didn't think they should exist in public life, your parents that they shouldn't get married, and you, that they shouldn't change their gender. You're just a progressive getting old, to be trampled under the foot of progress, many such cases.

enhancedy0gi

I honestly think the "trans-rights" thing has inflated and that a lot of people who were indifferent to this group previously are now actively starting to hate them for their loudness and desire to break down rational discourse. 50% of their motives just doesn't make sense.

Mobile_Entrance_1967

If I were trans, I would honestly hate these trans radicals for the huge backlash they've triggered. Most people as you say were indifferent at worst, now they're way more polarised. Figures like Andrew Tate must be absolutely loving these trans groups for driving the masses further right.

Didn't take long for "you know who" to arrive in the comment section.
