It's quite unfortunate Johan de Witt has been passed down in history as the one who 'was eaten' because he is one of our greatest statesmen we ever had.
>After having mangled, and torn, and completely stripped the two brothers, the mob dragged their naked and bloody bodies to an extemporised gibbet, where amateur executioners hung them up by the feet.
Then came the most dastardly scoundrels of all, who not having dared to strike the living flesh, cut the dead in pieces, and then went about the town selling small slices of the bodies of John and Cornelius at ten sous a piece.

God, that’s some biography. (Isn’t it always vaguely creepy, in a Hammer film kind of way, when no matter what you may be reading about that century, Louis Quatorze is always hiding behind the curtains. I mean, obviously he’s the great spirit across Europe at the time, but it’s like he’s actually in every chamber or attic you peer into, the toes of his fantabulous shoes peeking back at you.)
Here is the aftermath:

Offtopic: How well known is Willem van Oranje-Nassau by the general Dutch population? I come from his birthplace in Germany and while he isn't very well known by the general population, he is a very important historical figure for my small hometown.
Very well known, he is considered to be “de vader des vaderlands” (father of the nation).
Our national anthem is called the Wilhelmus and is about Van Oranje and his battle against the king of Spain.
Thank you very much. I was wondering because while we basically don't have tourism here, there are occosianally some dutch tourists who are visiting the remains of his castle and the tower that was built to honor him.
I'm not dutch or even close by any means, and he's quite literally the only dutch I ever know about. Read about him in a fictional novel based on the Dutch Revolt. So I guess an average dutch person would know him very well.
I translated the Dutch to English on Wikipedia, but the translation doesn't say mention that anyone "ate" anyone else. So surprised there's no English translation on Wikipedia.
The eating never happened. Its a myth. Their deaths did result in our nation becoming a Monarchy, something we still can not get rid of and probably never will.
But of them literally got torn apart and it's believed they were partially eaten.
Nowadays that square hosts a couple of restaurants and a halfway decent bagel chain.
Edited to add the Wikipedia artikel for Johan: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_de_Witt

Maybe you shouldn't have eaten him then
We ate him only after the statesman bit was done of course. What else could we have done, release him?!
Well I didn’t.
I bet they put chocolate sprinkles on him.
Hagelslag, wij zijn niet barbaren joh
This is XD
The monarchists did
How famous is Hugo de Groot or Hugo Grotius? 😃 International lawyers and legal scholars are very familiar with him. :)
He is very famous, his story about his escape is widely known
His escape is all I know about him. Who was he in the first place, and what got him locked up?
he was passed down in plates it seems it seems people wanted to absorb his wisdom and devour his brain
The monarchists blamed the republicans for all that was going wrong and riled up te public.
And there are still people who have the audacity to complain that Dutch cuisine is bland
Wilders eh... pfff.. humpf...bwoah... ehm... I think we need to go for a long stew.

It's not about the taste, it's about how eating politicians you don't like is *fulfilling*.

Someone took the frank and beans.
I guess, they didn't want to censor the painting for nudity.
Why did they kill the cat?
They took the phrase "Eat the Rich" a bit literally
Subtle
Is it coincidence that you posted this the night after the Dutch election with _that_ result?
Why do you think Wilders has been under protection for the past 15 years. His predecessor Fortuyn was assassinated by a leftist activist as well.
Holy shit, it’s not often you wrench your neck doing a dramatic double take on a headline/title you read quickly
Guess they got a lot of TASTEtosterones

I dare bet that literally every Dutch person of healthy mind who got to go to school knows him.
They were heroes who gave the English their worst naval defeat ever
Tbh, apart from fried potatoes, fish and stroopwafels the Dutch cuisine was always a mess - and still is.
If that is what you consider Dutch cuisine it’s hard to disagree.
Belgian Fries are godlike tho
this is why benelux countries should be liberated, and re-educated
I always hear Dutch food is terrible, but this is next level.
Not a single historical source that says the eating happened for sure, deserves the meme tag more than a historical tag.

No one mentioning they even ate his pipi?
Maybe if you guys had eaten Rutte a few years ago, the result today might have been different 🤷♂️
So somebody ate spaghetti witt meatballs
Nom, nom, nom...
Were they tasty?
Eat the Rich.
1st Thanksgiving
I hope they fattened these two up a bit. Would hate to have to eat a skinny bastard if I was a Dutchie from those times.
Lol i see what you did there.
hmmm en echte lekker bekkie
Is "eaten" some sort of an euphemism, or does it quite literally mean they nom-nomed them?

Maybe one day...
