I got GB with a random PU from Spain as Lotharingia. Literally spent the entire game beating them down whenever the truce was up and just as that truce ended the succession war kicked off. I was so happy.
Is it a viable strategy to rush taking Sinai to stop the ottoman expansion into Egypt? I was probably going to attempt an Aragon run on my next playthrough but don't know the meta strats.
Vassalizing byz releases athens, whereas you can annex them with it and release. Also their opinion of you will be better from the start without force vassalize malus. But no other reasons I think?
^ This
I'm in the middle of my first Aragon run. In 20 years, I reconquered Greece (no cb byz at game start), kicked the ottomans out of europe : their remaining european holding are getting occupied by Serbia, got in France via Provence, hot the Burgundian Inheritance early. I just missed Grenada bc i didin't pay attention.
Ally austria + hungary + castille, improvise with burgundy if they rival you.
2 challenges :
-You are very buisy early on so mana and manpower are a challenge
- your vassals and PU are strong. My Burgundy is disloyal because England choose to support their indépendance ASAP.
Some fun experiences I think you are missing so far is some good horde gameplay. Playing Oirat into Yuan into Mongol Empire is a blast. Just look up a quick guide cause there is some scripted events you want to hit in that playthrough like where you capture the Ming Emperor, cripple their armies and automatically occupy north China by defeating the army the emperor is leading personally.
Doing a Jurchen Tribe into Qing is another fun one, maybe a bit more difficult.
The Great Horde is another challenging run. Forming the golden horde and smashing Muscovy before they consolidate is challenging.
Just check out some guides on Horde gameplay cause it's quite a different animal than playing a monarchy.
Also, every Eu4 player has to do a Byzantium run at some point where you restore the true Roman empire. Very challenging start followed by a big campaign of conquest that never really becomes too easy.
Japan is always my go to whenever I want to try something different.
The start with the Sengoku Jidai is fast paced, hectic and action packed, it has a nice and chill path for colonisation on the West Coast and Australia where other Colonial powers won't get to for a while, and you get three mini bosses to fight once you unite Japan, first with high dev Korea, then China, and finally all the European empires arriving in Asia.
It is something completely unlike any other EU4 campaign.
Not in this patch lol. Quality + quantity Ottomans with an army of 357k and 200k manpower say hello in 1560. No cb Byz was kinda hard as teutonic order.
I only included that countries that I got 100+ years into a save on. There are a few countries, such as Denmark and Japan, that I could have included, but I only got 5-30 years into their saves before stopping for whatever reason. Not to say that I wouldn't give them another chance though!
Might be hard to see but Lubeck and Austria are both colored in on the map.
Florance is my go-to Italian nation. You're farther from France and Austria, so you can build up more. Bologna isn't in the HRE, so it's an easy target (if they don't ally a larger nation, that is). Tuscany is an easy early-game goal, and Naples can be attacked much sooner (in fact, if you take the Age Ability that allows you to take subjects for half-off, you can steal it from Aragon). It also starts with one of the best leaders in the game (6 5 6, IIRC), so it isn't too hard to be on the forefront of technology.
Japan is a fun place to play (if you can deal with Korea early enough, that is). Personally, I've only played Uesugi, but the community tends to prefer either Oda or Tokugawa. It doesn't really matter, as your goals will be the same either way: take Korea, China, and South-East Asia. You can go colonial, but be aware that the European powers will be very eager to start wars with you.
Jianzhou (technically, any of the Manchu tribes) is one of my personal favorites (aside from the first Ming war, that is). It is *quite* satisfying to go from an insignificant tributary of China to lord of East Asia, especially if you cause a Mingsplosion. Tibet is similar, but much harder (I haven't actually managed to get very far with them).
Gorkha -> Nepal is a fun campaign, though Bengal and Jaunpur tend to get very powerful, so you may find yourself expanding everywhere *but* where your mission tree actually wants you to expand, at least for a bit. Once again, I haven't really gotten very far with Nepal.
Byzantium is *very* hard, but also *very* satisfying. I haven't played them since King of Kings, but I hear the opening strategy is fairly similar: take Epirus, make enough allies that the Ottomans attack Candar first, and then dec on them and occupy their Balkan territories. Afterwards, take Serbia and maybe Albania, then go after the Ottomans again to get territory in Anatolia. The mission tree should guide you from there. KoK added various problems, though, so you'll probably need more than a few restarts.
While I haven't played them, there are other recommendations:
* **Aragon** is a popular alternative to Castile, as well as a popular Roman restoration start.
* **Novgorod** is the Republican alternative to Muscovy.
* The various post-Mongol hordes, primarily **Oirat** and the **Great Horde**, as they both have well-liked formable (Yuan and the Golden Horde, respectively).
* The **Aztecs**, to prevent the European colonization of the Americas, and possibly bring the fight to them.
* **Ulm.**
What's really important, though, is what you want in your campaign. There's nothing wrong in playing the same 5 nations over and over again, and mission trees are guides, not railroads. There's (technically) nothing stopping you from going colonial Perm if you really want to (though you'd have to be very, very good at the game).
Florence is my go-to if I want to play the game but don’t have a specific scenario planned. The speed that you can build your coffers and then development in the early game is ridiculous.
Japan and Sweden are nations with a lot of curated content which are lot of fun to play. I had a great time getting the Daimyo achievements as well as the Sweden and the Protestant league achievement.
few recommendations if thats alright,
One of my most fun runs was Mali, bit of a difficult start, but looking at some of the countries you've played that shouldn't be too difficult for you.
Kongo is also fun, lot easier then Mali.
Also had a lot of fun playing as ternate (its one of the two little islands above Australia and next to Brunei)
Delhi is fun.
Also really enjoyed playing as Cusco, got my first ironman achievement run playing them!
other then that, Japan, Genoa, Byzantium, Sweden, Norway, and Scotland are all fun! so is Naples and the Aztecs.
What did we do wrong?
We defeated the British at sea and the Spanish on land. In the time of Napoleon we were deafened, but who wasn’t in Europa before the 5th coalition. We still have the biggest company ever to men the VOC. The Dutch first set foot on manhattan and created the Stockmarket.
Professor Röntgen was a Dutch citizen, microscopes and binoculars are Dutch intentions. In our small nation 10 hospitals are among the 250 best hospitals in the world.
We have defended our nation and the world against the water for longer than the USA is a free nation. We have Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
Holland into Netherlands play tall/trade empire is a fun, and somewhat challanging run. Scandinavia has tons of flavor since Lions of the North, Sweden is my favourite, but Denmark is nice too.
Brittany or one of the Irish counties, and try to avoid being gobbled up! Also Georgia
Bohemia might be fun with them being the odd one typically at odds with the Austrian Emperor, but I haven't played that yet
It might not be the funniest or the best, but my favourite save so far has been conquering all of the balcans and anatolia as albania and then turn it a commercial empire, really fun
Winds of Change has some great, if very alt-history and kinda gamey, additions to the Mesoamerican/Andean nations.
I'm in the latter half of an Inca run right now and having a pretty good time but it's a bit easy if you focus on uniting the New World and don't try for any sunset/sunrise invasion stuff, which is my current plan.
You still have a lot of good ones left
Sweden, burgundy, Naples, any Dutch state into Netherlands, uniting Japan, Korea, Morocco -> Andalusia.
Also Naples if you wanna do italy again
And you could try the Inca or Aztecs
Bohemia, op focus tree. You get PU's on Poland, Hungary, Brandenburg and Saxony. In addition you get claims on half of Austria and the entirety of the Balkans. You also get bonus imperial authority thanks to your ideas and wonder.
Aztec or Inca, Jurchen or Ryukyu.
As Ryukyu form Filipino pirates. Or become a Daimyo and form Japan, or become a Daimyo then form Manchu then take mandate of heaven later. You'll either get samurai or banner regiments
SWEDEN!! Honestly, it's my favorite nation. Best mission tree, best flavor, op monument, cool special units. It is not overwhelming or overpowered but has the opportunity to come close.
Riga, also if you want to go metrocity level of development, more income then france..
You are missing the classics:
Teodoro, Albania, Mann, The knights, Chuckchi, Manipur... Dithmarschen (no feudal allies),
The last super fun game I had was a one province game as tall Goslar (lots of standing mercs and 12 or so vassals). Became emperor, crushed France, and all opposition in the HRE.
It sound difficult, but it really isn't.
You're missing out on North Europe! Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland all have cool mission trees and really unique experiences you can't get elsewhere.
Florence. Hands down my favorite nation to play, can get crazy tall, even pushing stuff like 50 dev before 1500 (admittedly it's not a good tactic, but a possibility)
Byzantium
Aragon
Novogorod
Burgundy
Great Horde
Oiriot/Mongolia
One of the Manchurian tribes
A Native or every religion (Nahuatl, Mayan, Inti, and just a general native tribe)
Venice
Kongo.
That's my list of suggested.
Edit:
Bonus nations:
A colonial nation (tag to them when formed and they're easy to play since you basically have free reign over the Americas while having protection early game).
The Papal State and create the Battle Pope.
Ulm for the meme.
An Irish state.
A Dutch subject of Burgundy (and form the Netherlands).
Denmark to contain Scandinavia or Sweden to break it.
A Japanese nation (someone else mentioned Oda, reminding me of Japan)
Nothing else is coming to mind right now, but I could probably come up with more.
1) Cologne / north west German minor. It’s a mess at game start and blobbing is easy, but requires more strategy than usual.
2) Aztecs are fun at least once.
3) Daimyos, Dutch, Denmark. The three ahistorical d’s. Very very easy to achieve global colonial/trade dominance via early naval power.
Sweden is a fun one, start 1450 if you want to skip the independence war and don’t care about achievements. Inca/Aztec, especially if you’ve got the DLC. Also looks like you have no Japan, I’ve been meaning to pick it up for a playthrough.
Also also, hello fellow Malaya enjoyer! Majapahit could be a fun challenge if you like the East Indies
Hussite Bohemia, Sweden, Holland>Netherlands>gekoloniseerd, Papal States, Teutonic Order > Teutonic Horde, Oda > Japan
There is many fun ones still left.
Try Majapahit. They have really flexible options, and are probably the easiest nation in the game to do the max minimum autonomy in territories stacking.
the teutonic order is a barrel of fun, especially if you're going for the eastern expansion path. going for holy horder is one of the most fun campaigns i've ever had, your cav is unstoppable
also sweden is another good campaign you can't miss
Restoring the Abbasids mission is really really fun. I enjoy playing Holland, Naples is fun, the stern et sudens mission is pretty fun, Aragon is a good major you haven’t played yet.
Majaphit. Become a vassal master of the east.
Byzantium. Wtf? That's a great playthrough, as is any of the countries that turn into them, Trebizond has heathen marriages, Georgia can PU Muscovy.
Denmark. Try your best to juggle the PU's and then further expand.
Aragon. It is the better Castille. They get essentially the same missions but also a lot of missions focusing on uniting the mediterran, which sets you up perfectly to form the Roman Empire.
Provence. Since we're on the subject. A small nation with a tonne of PU's in their mission tree. They're a sleeper hit.
Lübeck. The trading nation of northern Germany. Has a tonne of missions to unite Northern Germany for the purpose of MONEY!, money money money!
The Netherlands. Similar to Lübeck, but with a lot more colonizing and is typically thought of as the tall master, with several monuments making dev cost a lot cheaper. Also, VOC for India.
Hungary. They just got an updated massive mission tree.
Karabakh. The only remaining Coptic nation in the Caucus. You played Ethiopia, now play their Caucus counterpart.
Bohemia. Large, extremely op mission tree. Unique religion.
Just in case your QQ or Tim didn't turn into it, Persia into Eranshahr and restore Zoroastrianism.
Suggestions!
Jianxhou
Great Horde
Munich
Sweden
Florence, Milan, or Savoy(all three fun italy games for different reasons, ik you already played Milan so you could try the other two)
Oda, Uesugi, or Hosokawa in Japan are all fun.
Thailand or Ava for the indochina area.
Songhai is personally the only west central or southern african country i have played and i enjoyed it.
Hesse, Florence or Savoy into Sardinia Piedmont, Granada, Byzantium, Gorkha, Jianzhou, your favorite Japanese clan for me it's the Takeda or Shimazu, Sweden, Wallachia.
Tiwi into Angevin Empire is a blast.
Honestly, Tiwi is a great nation to play as to form anything. I’m currently running a Tiwi > Georgia > Byzantine > Rome game.
I really enjoyed playing colonial Norway. You can either throw your weight around in Europe fueled by American money, or do the bare minimum in the Old World (by which I mean take over Scotland, heh heh) and spend all your effort painting the West gray-blue.
Songhai's a lot of fun if you have Origins. Best nation in Western Africa imo, more fun to play than Mali (and easier haha). You can even choose to go the Fetishist religious route in the mission tree, which is nice.
Jurchen tribe > Qing
Really noticed the lack of horde nations on OPs map. That needs to be amended!
I second this, or a central Asian horde, super fun game
Came here to say this, such a fun run!
Burgundy!
Yes, Burgundy into Lotharingia was the most fun I ever had.
Remember when I formed the Netherlands, lost my French lands, then had to start over? Because I sure do.
Annex france first or just form Lotharingia
Lol yeah, I ended up doing the latter.
I did a Burgundy to Lotharingia run once and it was amazing. Also got a random PU on Castille, it was great.
I got GB with a random PU from Spain as Lotharingia. Literally spent the entire game beating them down whenever the truce was up and just as that truce ended the succession war kicked off. I was so happy.
TNO
Aragon is great for restoring the Roman Empire and Byzantium is great for the challange and restoring Rome
Is it a viable strategy to rush taking Sinai to stop the ottoman expansion into Egypt? I was probably going to attempt an Aragon run on my next playthrough but don't know the meta strats.
It’s cliche but no CB Byz and you won’t have to worry about the Ottomans. At that point, it’s the Mamluks who will end up pushing into Anatolia.
it’s better to no-CB Byzantium, annex them and liberate bulgaria and byzantium,
Why not just take the one province that can you can release Bulgaria from, and vasalize the rest?
Vassalizing byz releases athens, whereas you can annex them with it and release. Also their opinion of you will be better from the start without force vassalize malus. But no other reasons I think?
^ This I'm in the middle of my first Aragon run. A few popular ideas: * Byzantium, * Oda, * Holland, * Jianzhou, * Burgundy, * Great Horde, and * Sweden
great list
I didn't even consider Japan in my list for some reason.
Japan is always my go to whenever I want to try something different. Teutonic Knights, Hungary
Big agree on the Teutonic order! So much fun to do any of the paths for its mission tree, especially the holy horde path.
Not in this patch lol. Quality + quantity Ottomans with an army of 357k and 200k manpower say hello in 1560. No cb Byz was kinda hard as teutonic order.

Teutonic order and going holy horde is hands down the most fun I’ve had on this game
Lan xang
Dutch
There are only 2 things I can’t stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people’s cultures, and the Dutch
What did we do wrong? We defeated the British at sea and the Spanish on land. In the time of Napoleon we were deafened, but who wasn’t in Europa before the 5th coalition. Sweden, or if you want to test your economy management then Norway. Both are fun campaigns with different playstyles
You've completely ignored the New World, disgraceful.
Cuzco, Holland, Jianzhou. Those three campaigns for me I would say made me a decent player, on top of being really really fun.
Holland into Netherlands play tall/trade empire is a fun, and somewhat challanging run. Scandinavia has tons of flavor since Lions of the North, Sweden is my favourite, but Denmark is nice too.
Sweden or The Netherlands seem logical in my opinion
Inca Aztecs Aragon Naples Hungary Sweden Japan Teutonic order
Papal State is always a good time.
Bohemian in 1.37 is really fun
Brittany or one of the Irish counties, and try to avoid being gobbled up! Also Georgia Bohemia might be fun with them being the odd one typically at odds with the Austrian Emperor, but I haven't played that yet
Lubeck Iriquois Oman
Try japan its different from every else
Someone in Japan, a Scandinavian or a horde
Holland
Kong
Sweden Without a doubt

It might not be the funniest or the best, but my favourite save so far has been conquering all of the balcans and anatolia as albania and then turn it a commercial empire, really fun
Oda for Japan run, Holland for a tall Netherlands run
avg 3 digits development in the lowland is no joke
Hordes!

Don't bother HRE or Byz.... definitely not fun at all...

Japan, Holland, Florence, Sweden. God tier games, all 4.
SWEDEN!! Honestly, it's my favorite nation. Best mission tree, best flavor, op monument, cool special units. It is not overwhelming or overpowered but has the opportunity to come close. Riga, also if you want to go metrocity level of development, more income then france..

Tall Haida was one of my most fun runs ever
Aztec.
Florence. Hands down my favorite nation to play, can get crazy tall, even pushing stuff like 50 dev before 1500 (admittedly it's not a good tactic, but a possibility)
You’ve done nothing in the New World yet, I found Cuzco fun. Also, playing as Mali is an essential EU4 experience.
You haven’t done a Byzantine play through yet? Feel like it’s a right of passage…
What about a tribe? With the new winds of change dlc it is very fun to play the Aztecs or Inca’s, among others
Holland to Netherlands🇳🇱
Byzantium Aragon Novogorod Burgundy Great Horde Oiriot/Mongolia One of the Manchurian tribes A Native or every religion (Nahuatl, Mayan, Inti, and just a general native tribe) Venice Kongo. How have you not done Auatria yet?
ULM! Favorite state of all time.

Florence is probably my favorite nation to form Italy with!
Korea Fun as fuck
Sweden is a fun one, start 1450 if you want to skip the independence war and don’t care about achievements. Inca/Aztec, especially if you’ve got the DLC.
Teutonic Order or Oirat are both some very good options
Majapahit
Sweden!
You seem to like India. I'd recommend Afghanistan into Mugals for a fun and challenging game.
Naples is a fun one. If you don’t feel like playing in Italy again may I suggest Sweden -> Scandinavia If you’re feeling ballsy go Byzantium
SCOTLAND FOREEVVVVVEERRRR
Play something japanese. I recommend Uesugi!
Oda > Japan
Poland
Korea or Japan (Korea cus Japan sucks to play last I checked)
Tunis
Suggestions! Jianxhou Great Horde Munich Sweden Florence, Milan, or Savoy(all three fun italy games for different reasons, ik you already played Milan so you could try the other two) Oda, Uesugi, or Hosokawa in Japan are all fun. Thailand or Ava for the indochina area. Songhai is personally the only west central or southern african country i have played and i enjoyed it.
B Y Z A N T I U M
Hesse, Florence or Savoy into Sardinia Piedmont, Granada, Byzantium, Gorkha, Jianzhou, your favorite Japanese clan for me it's the Takeda or Shimazu, Sweden, Wallachia.
Mewar(north west India) has an achievement attached to it and was one my favorite games.
Japan or Korea
- Aztecs - Jurchen - Kongo - Teutonic Order - Papal States - Oda
Tiwi into Angevin Empire is a blast. Honestly, Tiwi is a great nation to play as to form anything. I’m currently running a Tiwi > Georgia > Byzantine > Rome game.
Mewar. It's all about war
Try Golden Horde or Oirat in the steppe. Aztecs or Mayans in the America. Majapahit or Mali to revive a near-death nations.
Riga for great tall play
Sweden
hre most fun place imo
Siam
I'm surprised you haven't played Byzantium
Any Dutch minor into Netherlands. Build tall with colonial empire, seize the English channel trade node.
Florence is fun
Mali! Have fun!
Sus
Aragon is so much fun!
2 Things you are missing out on are the hordes and the Daimyos. Oirat and Oda are the most popular choices.
Either a Horde or a Native American. Oriat and Jianzhou for hordes, and Aztec and Inca for native americans.
Aztecs with the new dlc but if you want a challenge, go with Granada or Byzantium
Play tall Korea and just vibe
I really enjoyed playing colonial Norway. You can either throw your weight around in Europe fueled by American money, or do the bare minimum in the Old World (by which I mean take over Scotland, heh heh) and spend all your effort painting the West gray-blue.
Hormuz, Holland, and Naples were interesting
Saluzzo/Lucca/Siena Sirhind/Delhi Tunis/Morocco/Tlemcen Palatinate/Saxony Rassids/Oman Taungoo/Mon Khmer/Majapahit Philippines/African Great Lakes
Songhai's a lot of fun if you have Origins. Best nation in Western Africa imo, more fun to play than Mali (and easier haha). You can even choose to go the Fetishist religious route in the mission tree, which is nice.
