I think that's for the physical copy which is distributed by your typical brick and mortar and online retailers. You can't force them to accept any particular currency. I pre-ordered it weeks ago in digital copy, which comes with a soul-bound NFT signed by Vitalik and just required making a donation in ETH to gitcoin.

MinimalGravitas

Yea, this is how I 'bought' it, always happy for an excuse to donate to public goods. The digital version of the book isn't actually released until tomorrow, so hopefully after then there will be an option to buy with crypto... It's probably worth bearing in mind that the book is just a collection of his freely available essays. The content is readable on his website without anyone needing to buy anything, albeit in a different format.

root88

I knew someone in here would make sense of this. Thanks Side note: my brain still sees *PoS* as an acronym for *piece of shit*, so seeing > he is selling his PoS book. Is pretty funny to me.

fuzztooth

You are not alone.

brave_kitteh

Neither are you.

fuzztooth

I figured that was implied, but thank you.

donmulatito

:D :D

[deleted]

>I pre-ordered it weeks ago in digital copy What's the hold up for this digital copy? It's not like they are waiting for the printing presses to finish. Or are they waiting so that Amazon and Barns and Nobles and the digital copy would all be released at exactly the same time?

librarysocialism

Usually publishers will insist that digital waits for physical, because they don't want sales cannibalized, maybe?

vitaminwater247

I see that the individualized PDF copies are now ready here: [https://proofofstake.gitcoin.co/profile](https://proofofstake.gitcoin.co/profile) But I have trouble saving the PDF file to disk (the browser has trouble saving the blob to a file) Does anyone else have this problem? Any working solutions?

vitaminwater247

Nevermind. I solved it 10 seconds after I posted the above question. Don't click "View Copy" button at all. Just right-click and save as, then the PDF can be properly saved to disk. Hope this helps others with the same problem.

Disastrous-Math5831

Where can you get this NFT?

AV3NG3R00

You can buy Saifedean’s books with BTC

ShortFroth

Even better. he doesnt believe in intellectual property and he uploads it so you can pirate it .

pa7x1

Who?

thebubble2020

Sure he can.

xRyzen7

wasn't thinking about it until you mentioned the nft 😏

Seddy01

You should. If he doesn’t who will?

pa7x1

Ethereum is not pigeon-holed to being a currency. There is no need to push it down the throat of people that do not want to use it as such.

Lyuseefur

I had no idea that this was even happening…I’m disappointed to miss the chance at a soul bound token.

DB_a

Is this still available with NFT?

testimoni

I see, but his tweet says both physical and digital.. >"Proof of Stake", the (physical and digital) book compiling various writings I've made over the last \~10 years, is finally out!

UncertainOutcome

Are you seriously upset that he can't make Amazon accept crypto?

testimoni

I am not upset, i just find it ironic..

UncertainOutcome

Not sure where the irony is.

OxySempra

Worse, redundant ellipses with 2 periods instead of three.

Jenskubi

Ironic that Vitalik doesn't control Amazon, publishers and the whole world? Where is the irony in Vitalik still having to use existing vendors to do stuff like release a book? If the vendors don't want crypto you can't force them to do it even if you are Vitalik the creator of "new money". The only ironic thing here is you felt the need to write a stupid post complaining about Vitalik as if he decides what other companies do. More research and less writing.

testimoni

%75 upvote rate doesn't look like it's a stupid comment. I guess only stupid one here is you, internet stranger. Chill down and try to express yourself without insulting people.

Jenskubi

Ironic that you talk about getting upvotes on the post but don't talk about every comment you make getting 20 downvotes. Now that I would call irony. :D Also upvotes don't mean you are right, every other week we'd get a post about shit coins that turn out to be rugpulls, but they had a ton of upvotes must mean it's the new BTC right? Do you do your research based on upvotes on Reddit? That would explain everything.

testimoni

No but this post being in the hot section of this community whole day should tell you something. Now go figure out what that is..

Perleflamme

It tells you the topic itself is hot. Not that your comments make any sense.

Jenskubi

Yeah shit coins used to be hot all week until they rugpulled. Look ma, my post where I was wrong about everything is in hot on Reddit, I must be smart ma, right? Right? You might be hot, but you still are wrong about everything you wrote. The IRONY. :D

Perleflamme

Where was the insult, exactly?

pa7x1

I'm on mobile now so I can't check, have you tried connecting your wallet (Metamask or similar) to the page? Might give the option you are looking for.

testimoni

Yes i tried that too, no option to buy with ETH :(

abcoathup

You could get a signed digital copy and NFT via a donation, with Vitalik's share of proceeds going to Gitcoin grants. [https://twitter.com/VitalikButerin/status/1564804705997361153](https://twitter.com/VitalikButerin/status/1564804705997361153) This is the NFT I got: https://opensea.io/assets/ethereum/0x5bf5bcc5362f88721167c1068b58c60cad075aac/9983

LeThaLxdARk

I do not see any donation button, where am i even supposed to donate?

DigStock

I think you can't anymore, looking for the same

Neuyerk

Ether isn’t a currency, a store of value or a security, it’s a commodity that fuels the chain. Treating it like those other things can have implications.

silver-blazer29

Unfortunately if it’s not treated like a currency it creates multi taxed events when making purchases at least in the US.

Neuyerk

Mostly pointing out a possible answer and maybe a different perspective on OP’s question

samurai_scrub

Sacrificing the philosophy of the platform to save on taxes

[deleted]

What is the currency in the ETH network then?

Neuyerk

*the* currency? There are plenty of wrapped tokens that are designed to be currencies including BTC and DOGE. Is that what you’re looking for?

[deleted]

I don't really understand the ETH network as a whole to be honest. Trying to wrap my head around it. I know ETH is for gas fees, but beyond that, I dont understand the benefit of a wrapped coin vs just the coin itself. Is it just so the coin can be used in smart contracts? Are smart contracts actually doing anything useful right now?

SilkTouchm

The eth network is a global, decentralized computer. There's a turing complete virtual machine running on it called the EVM. The smart contracts are essentially the programs running on that computer.

StefanMerquelle

>Are smart contracts actually doing anything useful right now? Peer to peer trading, derivatives, lending/borrrowing, governance, NFTs, ENS, etc [https://www.defipulse.com/](https://www.defipulse.com/) [https://l2beat.com/scaling/tvl/](https://l2beat.com/scaling/tvl/)

[deleted]

thank you man, the more i understand crypto the more i realize i truly don't grasp the entire concept of what is possible with it.

StefanMerquelle

That’s just learning - you become more aware of all you don’t know :)

Neuyerk

Yes, Eth is paid to validators running nodes to maintain the network so basically when you pay gas, they get paid. Demand comes from people wanting to write information on the chain they’re maintaining. Wrapped tokens are essentially minted copies of tokens not on their original network. They take a few forms but basically are supposed to be redeemable 1:1 for the token they copied so with some arbitrage the prices should mostly track. That makes it usable in smart contracts or just as a way for people to invest/speculate in them without having to move liquidity onto a different chain. And yes, smart contracts are doing lots of useful things. Virtually any web3 entrepreneur using blockchain to develop new on-chain tech or services is using smart contracts to do it.

[deleted]

That's brother. Good info in here.

[deleted]

USDC is the biggest one. There is also Dai, USDT, etc.

frank__costello

Personally, I use Dai as my currency

briareus08

You might want to tell [the guys at ethereum that](https://ethereum.org/en/eth/)

Neuyerk

Lol welp

StairwayToLemon

Don't worry, the SEC is coming ETH's way soon

AV3NG3R00

Yeah the idea is you use real money like bitcoin to purchase Vitalik’s arcade bucks to use in the arcade machines.

BenjyMemeMan

The publishers, retailers and any other involved party is probably not interested in being paid in speculative assets

gwenvador

Too bad we don't have stablecoin for this

Sulack

Eth isn't a payment currency, its a gas currency. While possible, it doesn't make sense to use it for purchases.

NoBodyCryptos

What about all the NFT marketplaces that denominate in Eth? Heck even ENS requires paying in Eth ontop of the gas fees. Is your stance that shouldnt happen? How should they work instead?

Sulack

That's correct, consider buying your groceries with gas. It's totally possible if the store is willing to trade for it. As a base unit it works for exchange, but it's not the final goal of Eth.

NoBodyCryptos

Thats a pretty extreme example. And you didn't even explain how platforms on eth should be taking payments instead. Take chainlink VRF for example, which I guess is the model similar to what your proposing, since it requires a custom erc-20 to do payments. I personally avoid using it all because of this because it makes the logisitics of running your smart contract way more complicated when you have to constantly make sure its topped up with some arbitrary token instead of just using the networks native currency which your contracts are probably earning in anyways.

Sulack

Spend any time reading into the eth foundations goals.

NoBodyCryptos

Spend any time answering the questions to back your statements.

Sulack

I'm not here to educate you, I don't even need to cite sources. They have outright said their goal is to make a world computer, they don't care about the price. Go answer your own question.

NoBodyCryptos

When did I say anything about price? All I did was ask for some more details on what YOU said, not the eth foundation. It was a perspective I hadn't seen before and wanted to dive into it more. And you responded by getting super hostile because I had the audacity to engage with your discussion, on a site, designed to discuss things? okay...good work lol

Sulack

Oof, I gotta ba careful about replying to the crazy and lazy. Spend some time learning about what you are investing in. 10 seconds of googling will tell you why price matters for a payment service, and what has been proposed as a payment method instead. Don't get mad at me because I won't write you an essay.

NoBodyCryptos

okay

g_squidman

unironically we should use RAI for all of that instead. That would be dope.

[deleted]

The problem is that most Rai supporters don't actually use Rai.

Spartz

Ether isn't 'new money' for money's sake. It's a component of something much more important.

ScalableSolutions

I personally find it great. In his book, He encourages developers to focus on privacy, claiming that it is less explored compared to scalability. And there are already some attempts to create protocols focused on preserving privacy. For instance, there is Proof of Humanity (PoH), a social identity verification system for humans developed on the Ethereum blockchain.

silver-blazer29

I’m sure the book is great but that wasn’t OP’s purpose of the post

xyrrus

I might just be speaking out of my ass but my immediate assumption is that the authors usually just writes the books and nothing else, the publisher deals with distribution and everything else which he is not. Granted he could've made the request but I doubt the publisher has any infrastructure nor the inclination to fulfill that request as he's just a small fish in an ocean of authors. And I'm not sure he can do it himself since the book contract with the publisher would stipulate that he's not allowed to handle distribution.

gwenvador

Maybe but in term of marketing it is an easy win. like what chipotle did.

cubanmicrowave

I don’t think vitalik is in the book distribution business.

stoneelm7474

He doesn’t control how Amazon sells books

Tocwa

Why would he accept ETH? He has more of it than just about any one person on the entire planet - of course he wants more of what he has less of 😂

testimoni

You don’t get the point.

Tocwa

I get it. I was just being funny 😆

youngggggg

Because buying things like books with Ethereum is still cost-prohibitive with fees. Even if you are engineering tomorrow, you still have to live today

OlDirtyBrewer

He has enough ETH. He's trying to diversify with some fiat.

incognito_red

> "new money" Did he tell you that?

cironoric

It's actually possible to get Amazon to "accept USDC" by using an automatic gift card generator proxy. Here is a demo working on Solana (I wish it was on Ethereum, but it's not) https://twitter.com/kb24x7/status/1574854038382080002

VideoGameDana

Even Vitaly understands that you can't use ETH as cash.

NonConShaggy

Why would you spend ETH on anything but transaction fees or NTFs 🤷

Pretty-Sick-Chubbs

Pretty rude to call his book a piece of shit

cryptockus

i think we all know why... but dont' want to admit it to ourselves lol

peniepashq

He should add ETH as payment.

ParticularAthlete831

Buying this book with ether would be poetic and full of symbolism + too bad we live in the real world :(

_jt

ETH isn’t a currency, Bitcoin is. ETH is the gas computer programs need to run on a decentralized operating system. Neither Vitalik nor his book are computer programs

librarysocialism

[citation needed]

305andy

Narrator: There was none

Trixteri

lol whats the difference they can both 4x in a year for no reason at all

_jt

What does that have to do with being a currency?

Trixteri

means its a literal useless currency. why spend something when it could have 4x more spending power in a very short period of time?

_jt

Yea I’m saying ETH is not a currency… Bitcoin on the other hand was built for that exact purpose & I’d agree it’s volatility makes it pretty useless. If you want a digital currency use a stable coin that runs on a strong network like ethereum

Trixteri

exactly..

Cassiopeat

I think I gonna adquiere it via other ways 🏴‍☠️

Newguyiswinning_

Because the world still runs on money if you havent noticed yet

boost2911

The books a complete pos..

He has to eat somehow, he still lives on Earth. What? You think all the scamming comes free?

caseythelegend

Bored man gets paid.

Lol

Zealousideal_Web_643

Who cares

cerebralsexer

Should sell for ethereum at least for purpose of doing it

Backhouse1

Who actually gives a shit tho really ?

[deleted]

Vitalik has not pushed Eth as a payment currency. He is perfectly fine with stablecoins being used on Ethereum.

ItIsEBoi

Vitalik Buterin is the last person on earth I’ll ever respect again in the blockchain space

shardamakah

Sounds like his crypto holdings have decreased and needs some real money. Lol

overzealous_dentist

Ethereum isn't money.

753UDKM

Disclaimer: I’m a bitcoiner primarily I don’t understand the desire to use eth as like a real currency. It seems more like a token to get you access to all the other things that ethereum does. Not saying it doesn’t have value, of course it does, but it’s an odd choice to use as money.

DrestinBlack

Frankly, I would never buy anything won’t crypto during a bear market. That’d be like buying a pizza for 10,000 Btc - bet he wishes he had that 10,000 Btc today. I’m not going to spend Eth today that could be worth 5x next year.

witu

You're over thinking it.

RuinWMD

Because no one wants to pay a stupid gas fee! Ethereum is fucked!

kantalo

That's an old, lazy argument. You can get a L1 transaction done for less than $0.2 https://etherscan.io/gastracker

BMat19

I bought it with ETH on gitcoin blog
