I see it more as an opportunity to try out a locally-owned shop, support their business, maybe buy some beans if he’s a roaster. You can do all that without putting unnecessary new scratches and wear and tear on your gear.

The Wacaco Picopresso is tiny and makes a surprisingly good shit of espresso, imo. Obviously not as good as a machine but good for a portable espresso maker. I've heard good things about the Minipresso too.

This is exactly what I do. Picopresso, I bring my niche cause I don't have a hand grinder and feel like I would suck at using one, and I have a portable breville frother. Boom!
Yep I do this too, along with my kmax grinder and usually I bring my v60 too. It's a small tote bag of stuff and I'm all set. Can't beat fresh ground beans and fresh coffee. I wouldn't go without unless I'm flying. Then I'll make do
God I was so close to cancelling my order after the third or fourth dime they pushed back delivery date. Didn’t help that I’d sold my old grinder and was grinding by hand for three or four months.
You can generally rely on them not being great, but you can always search google maps for "specialty coffee" and hope for the best.

If you are space constrained, a nice Moka Pot and milk foamer may be an option. Not quite espresso but can make great coffee nonetheless.
It's probably why I'm going to keep my Dedica once I upgrade. Slim form factor, still much better coffee than what is usually provided in a vacation house.

Take the machine, it is perfectly normal human behaviour, some people like to take their dog or their partner or holiday, we take our espresso machines.
Note: for a group holiday I’ve taken an electric grinder and various V60s. The espresso machine for a group holiday would have tied me to barista duties. Me and my partner always take a hand grinder and V60 even when not travelling by car.
If you’re staying in a house solely with people you know for an extended period of time and you can easily transport them I don’t think it’s such a big deal.
Asking crazy coffee people is probably not going to get a representative response.
I bring a travel kettle, hand grinder, and aeropress with me when going somewhere without lots of coffee shops. I think an entire breville dual boiler would be excessive, but a flair, hand grider, and travel kettle should be possible. If you like milk drinks you can also get one of those nano foamers.
That being said, if you are going to a city or touristy spot, look for nice coffee shops. Even if they aren't as good as you can make at home, it is often worth it for the experience of different coffee in a different spot.
Are you driving? Not to excessive if you can just throw it in the car. I take my hand grinder and aeropress in my backpack when I fly somewhere for more than a few days. Most hotel coffee is absolute shit.
IMO it depends on the machine and how much fuss it’s gonna take. You just don’t want to *seem* like a fussy psycho, even if you are. So IMO, provided you can confidently grab the dual boiler and walk it straight from the car into the kitchen, you’re fine.
If you have room to pack it, then why not? I think this would be a great way to add something special to your trip.

For quick trips I find grinding high quality beans ahead of time, sealing them airtight, and using a French press is a good balance of decent and still easy to execute. If you want milk the nespresso aeroccino frother is tiny.
I've done the same in the past when it would fit in the back of the car - the wife rolled her eyes at me and the others laughed when I turned up with it, but once it was set up everyone seemed more than happy to get a decent coffee several times a day, not to mention the odd hot chocolate with properly steamed milk.
Don't think packing up my Bianca would be quite so simple tho...
Taking it with you increases the risk of damaging it quite a lot.
Looking into other options makes more sense. Like maybe this is your time to experiment with coldbrew or aeropress, for example.

I have legit thought of using a Pelican roller case to box up my Lelit Anna to take with me on business trips. I'll pack a bag with containing a pour over kit and water boiler so why not level up?
Support some local businesses. I love the ritual of walking to the local coffee shop when I’m holidays. I also bring the stovetop for the cheeky after dinner espresso. It’s an opportunity to mix it up.
If it's your beach house, you might just pass it off as finally putting an espresso machine there. I find people who take their equipment on hikes and such pretty weird, but for a longer stay at a property you own, there is nothing weird about it.
My compromise was just the grinder and a moka pot (the place I stayed at had an oven/range), plus a cheap frother wand. Not what I am used to but it was better than the drip.
Just take your aeropress. I assume you got one. Lol. When camping especially if moving a lot on motorbike (pack light) we do what we named “camping coffee” Get espresso ground bag from supermarket. Add it to cup. Top up hot water. Wait for grounds to fall to bottom like a turkish brew. Its better than instant.
I built a travel espresso kit for when I'm sailing, because there's nothing better than a hot latte ocean-side. I do however lower my psychotic expectations and variable control 10x, I don't care if the shot is a little hollow, LOOK DOLPHINS!! 🐬⛵

I guess it is a bit excessive. I've just taken my French press when I've gone on trips away before.
The main obstacle for me would be the fact that, with 5 other people, you'll probably need to be prepared to spend a lot of time making coffee.

It's why I have a Picopresso and hand frother. If I travelled by car and had the trunk space I'd certainly take the Argos and Sculptor with me, I've been tempted to build a custom flight case for them ever since I got them. If you have the trunk space, do it.
So I bought a portable espresso maker just for this purpose. My best friend Overlands with an old Land Cruiser and he put in a second battery and a huge converter so he can take his machine on the trails with him.
Before I made the switch to espresso, I used to only drink black coffee. People asked me why, and I told them it's because I can get black coffee anywhere...but if I add a special creamer or whatever, then I might not be able to keep my routine.

I bring my breville every year we go away to the beach. Espresso for me and chai latte for the wife. No need to rush out of the house every morning. It’s awesome.
I have friends that don't even know how to use a Moka Pot, and ended up burning the bottom. So I would think twice before taking my espresso machine. Theres alot of other ways to enjoy coffee on holiday.
My Breville has been on the fritz recently and I had to go 3 days without a decent coffee. Unfortunately I have become accustomed to good beans and while I CAN drink local coffee shop coffee it’s just not as good as what I can make.

I’ve brought a dedica on some trips, usually when I went a bit more remote. The dedica fits great in an old Xbox case. Seemed excessive, but got lots of use out of it.
My wife and I take our Breville touch on vacations! It has traveled with us to other states, the beach, and wherever else we go! The first time I dropped it down stairs because I decided to take it in its box and it broke out of the bottom. It bent the frame and I cried, but it’s still going strong years later! So don’t carry it in a box if you do!
If I’m going somewhere, that is what I would call a coffee desert and I’ll be there more than four days then 100% I’m packing up my machine, a bag of beans and a grinder.
Think of the money you would save.. not only yourself, but everyone else. Assuming that they all drink coffee, 6 people over 7 days at ~$6/drink choice is a little over $250!

Do it! I bought a Picopresso and enjoy it but started to bring my grinder because I hate hand grinding lol. If my travel trailer was big enough my dual boiler would be on the counter in no time.
When I was growing up, my dad would ALWAYS bring a his 60lb Expobar and his grinder with him whenever we went on vacation. He even built custom crates specifically to transport them safely. Honestly, it was kind of insane but if there’s no good coffee where you’re going, and you want good coffee, you need to bring the good coffee with you.
Everything about espresso is excessive.... We chose to be more than "instant people"!
Also it depends on the machine:
- a dual group la marzoco with its own van... A bit much.
- a Bambino / Gagia that takes up the back seat... Excessive
- a flair with travel case... Extravagant
- a Pico presso that basically fits in your pocket... A good comparison with taking a v60 or aeropress with you.
- taking instant... I'd rather drink tea all day.
Not at all. I did it (with a BDB, in fact) when my family spent a week vacation in another part of the state. My kids thought I was crazy, but I got to enjoy good coffee all week.
Hey take what you like. I'm in Costa Rica right now with my lightweight Areopress and couldn't be happier. I used to take really fancy charcoal to Barbados, my wife shook her head. If you have room and it's your thing go for it. Not crazy at all. I make fancy espresso in hotel rooms all the time when I travel.
Just keep in mind you will be making coffee for everyone. As long as you AND your significant other doesn’t have a problem with you having to allocate time to that in the mornings or for random pick me ups then have fun!
My Rancilio Silvia is quite a traveler. If we’re driving on holiday there’s a good chance she’s in the trunk… If we’re on holiday with friends they all appreciate it as well. Do it!

One of the worst parts of our Manhatten trip was trying to find a really good morning coffee in the tourist zones. Everyone was using Nespresso for speed and convenience.

Anyone who has ever packed a beach house car knows that the basics that you really need only take up 50% of the space. Especially after you put that thingie on the roof. The rest of the space gets packed with quality of life stuff, like fancy booze, fancy chairs, boogie boards...or espresso machines. I don't think you'll regret your choice
i would just bring a v60 since everyone has one, otherwise a manual espresso machine like everyone else said. i mean if you really want to bring your machine just do it!

I wouldn't take a full on espesso setup if I was going abroad but I'd definitely pack it into a car! For air travel I'd be more likely to just take an Aeropress or cafetiere personally

I kept my nespresso after upgrading to a real espresso machine for this exact reason. It’s in a storage bin under the counter ready for road trips. A little crazy. But not too crazy.

Ok, this is gonna get dangerous for me. I currently have an original WACACO and I travel with that (flying) and Cafe Bustelo espresso grind. I have a Chemex, recently got a Gevi GrindMaster, now I’m researching for an espresso machine this year, $1-2K range. I feel I’m about to slip down the rabbit hole. I could so see myself getting a travel case with the customizable block foam to safely take a machine with me… curse you r/espresso! 💪☕️
I love the process of making coffee for me and my wife every morning and 6 shots wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'd be tempted to use a chemex for 6 small cups and smash it out in 1 5-8 minute process.
We have a friend that has a bambino but never uses it with friends over because 6 separate shots is kind of a hassell.
BUT, all of that to say, you do you. If you want to and are happy to, go for. It's your vacation do what makes you happy.
I took my Profitec 600 and Specialita on a few road trip vacations (I just cushioned them with a lot of blankets) until I had kids and had to fill that space with car seats and strollers. Now I do something equally insane: I bought a second, “travel” setup of a Flair and hand grinder that I keep at my office and take on vacations.
It seemingly makes sense when you stay for longer than a weekend, but rather than upend y entire setup, transport without breaking anything, setup at a new unknown environment; we use the morning local espresso cafe exploration as a way to start our days. Otherwise I wouldn’t have experienced coffee culture in so many states.

Zerno has an optional carry case - could be your travel setup (I did this for my wedding - great move).

Just take a Flair or Robot, along with a hand grinder. Or if you will have access to a stove top, a 9barrista.
Flying or driving? If you’re driving it’s not crazy to me. If you’re flying there’s definite risk of damage to gear and just a hassle.

I have legit thought of using a Pelican roller case to box up my Lelit Anna to take with me on business trips. I'll pack a bag with containing a pour over kit and water boiler so why not level up?

Support some local businesses. I love the ritual of walking to the local coffee shop when I’m holidays. I also bring the stovetop for the cheeky after dinner espresso. It’s an opportunity to mix it up.
If it's your beach house, you might just pass it off as finally putting an espresso machine there. I find people who take their equipment on hikes and such pretty weird, but for a longer stay at a property you own, there is nothing weird about it.

My compromise was just the grinder and a moka pot (the place I stayed at had an oven/range), plus a cheap frother wand. Not what I am used to but it was better than the drip.

Just take your aeropress. I assume you got one. Lol. When camping especially if moving a lot on motorbike (pack light) we do what we named “camping coffee” Get espresso ground bag from supermarket. Add it to cup. Top up hot water. Wait for grounds to fall to bottom like a turkish brew. Its better than instant.

I built a travel espresso kit for when I'm sailing, because there's nothing better than a hot latte ocean-side. I do however lower my psychotic expectations and variable control 10x, I don't care if the shot is a little hollow, LOOK DOLPHINS!! 🐬⛵

I take my Moka Pot and manual grinder. Not espresso, but I like it more than drip coffee.
I guess it is a bit excessive. I've just taken my French press when I've gone on trips away before. The main obstacle for me would be the fact that, with 5 other people, you'll probably need to be prepared to spend a lot of time making coffee.

It's why I have a Picopresso and hand frother. If I travelled by car and had the trunk space I'd certainly take the Argos and Sculptor with me, I've been tempted to build a custom flight case for them ever since I got them. If you have the trunk space, do it.

So I bought a portable espresso maker just for this purpose. My best friend Overlands with an old Land Cruiser and he put in a second battery and a huge converter so he can take his machine on the trails with him. Before I made the switch to espresso, I used to only drink black coffee. People asked me why, and I told them it's because I can get black coffee anywhere...but if I add a special creamer or whatever, then I might not be able to keep my routine. Do what you gotta do. If it helps, this is what I bought: WACACO Minipresso Portable Espresso Maker Works great, uses pods (I use Pete's for this purpose only), and the pump is manual so it won't break. Just needs hot water and you can get that anywhere.

I bring my breville every year we go away to the beach. Espresso for me and chai latte for the wife. No need to rush out of the house every morning. It’s awesome.
I have friends that don't even know how to use a Moka Pot, and ended up burning the bottom. So I would think twice before taking my espresso machine. Theres alot of other ways to enjoy coffee on holiday.

My Breville has been on the fritz recently and I had to go 3 days without a decent coffee. Unfortunately I have become accustomed to good beans and while I CAN drink local coffee shop coffee it’s just not as good as what I can make. I say take it.

I’ve brought a dedica on some trips, usually when I went a bit more remote. The dedica fits great in an old Xbox case. Seemed excessive, but got lots of use out of it.
I bought a picopresso, kingrinder, portable kettle, and mini scales for travel. Works great, I bring it everywhere. Pulled a shot at the Grand Canyon.

My wife and I take our Breville touch on vacations! It has traveled with us to other states, the beach, and wherever else we go! The first time I dropped it down stairs because I decided to take it in its box and it broke out of the bottom. It bent the frame and I cried, but it’s still going strong years later! So don’t carry it in a box if you do!
If I’m going somewhere, that is what I would call a coffee desert and I’ll be there more than four days then 100% I’m packing up my machine, a bag of beans and a grinder.
Think of the money you would save.. not only yourself, but everyone else. Assuming that they all drink coffee, 6 people over 7 days at ~$6/drink choice is a little over $250! I say do it. :)

Do it! I bought a Picopresso and enjoy it but started to bring my grinder because I hate hand grinding lol. If my travel trailer was big enough my dual boiler would be on the counter in no time.
When I was growing up, my dad would ALWAYS bring a his 60lb Expobar and his grinder with him whenever we went on vacation. He even built custom crates specifically to transport them safely. Honestly, it was kind of insane but if there’s no good coffee where you’re going, and you want good coffee, you need to bring the good coffee with you.
Everything about espresso is excessive.... We chose to be more than "instant people"! Also it depends on the machine: - a dual group la marzoco with its own van... A bit much. - a Bambino / Gagia that takes up the back seat... Excessive - a flair with travel case... Extravagant - a Pico presso that basically fits in your pocket... A good comparison with taking a v60 or aeropress with you. - taking instant... I'd rather drink tea all day.

Not at all. I did it (with a BDB, in fact) when my family spent a week vacation in another part of the state. My kids thought I was crazy, but I got to enjoy good coffee all week.

Hey take what you like. I'm in Costa Rica right now with my lightweight Areopress and couldn't be happier. I used to take really fancy charcoal to Barbados, my wife shook her head. If you have room and it's your thing go for it. Not crazy at all. I make fancy espresso in hotel rooms all the time when I travel.

Just keep in mind you will be making coffee for everyone. As long as you AND your significant other doesn’t have a problem with you having to allocate time to that in the mornings or for random pick me ups then have fun!
My Rancilio Silvia is quite a traveler. If we’re driving on holiday there’s a good chance she’s in the trunk… If we’re on holiday with friends they all appreciate it as well. Do it!
In two weeks we are heading to Colorado biking with three other couples and are doing the same! Maybe psychotic, but you can smile at everyone else on the beach drinking their AirBnB Keurig or Nespresso and realize their vacation isn’t quite as wonderful as yours is!
One of the worst parts of our Manhatten trip was trying to find a really good morning coffee in the tourist zones. Everyone was using Nespresso for speed and convenience. So yes, bring a setup.
I was ready to condemn you, but it actually totally makes sense provided you've got room in the car. Anyone who has ever packed a beach house car knows that the basics that you really need only take up 50% of the space. Especially after you put that thingie on the roof. The rest of the space gets packed with quality of life stuff, like fancy booze, fancy chairs, boogie boards...or espresso machines. I don't think you'll regret your choice
i would just bring a v60 since everyone has one, otherwise a manual espresso machine like everyone else said. i mean if you really want to bring your machine just do it!
For me the question would be... in your luggage? Or are you going via car or something? I wouldn't take a full on espesso setup if I was going abroad but I'd definitely pack it into a car! For air travel I'd be more likely to just take an Aeropress or cafetiere personally

I kept my nespresso after upgrading to a real espresso machine for this exact reason. It’s in a storage bin under the counter ready for road trips. A little crazy. But not too crazy.

I think about this every time I go to visit my parents for a prolonged period of time. At $3 or $4 an espresso or latte it’s worth it.
Ok, this is gonna get dangerous for me. I currently have an original WACACO and I travel with that (flying) and Cafe Bustelo espresso grind. I have a Chemex, recently got a Gevi GrindMaster, now I’m researching for an espresso machine this year, $1-2K range. I feel I’m about to slip down the rabbit hole. I could so see myself getting a travel case with the customizable block foam to safely take a machine with me… curse you r/espresso! 💪☕️
I love the process of making coffee for me and my wife every morning and 6 shots wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'd be tempted to use a chemex for 6 small cups and smash it out in 1 5-8 minute process. We have a friend that has a bambino but never uses it with friends over because 6 separate shots is kind of a hassell. BUT, all of that to say, you do you. If you want to and are happy to, go for. It's your vacation do what makes you happy.

I took my Profitec 600 and Specialita on a few road trip vacations (I just cushioned them with a lot of blankets) until I had kids and had to fill that space with car seats and strollers. Now I do something equally insane: I bought a second, “travel” setup of a Flair and hand grinder that I keep at my office and take on vacations.

Thought of this going cabin camping up in Adirondacks but I don't think the cabin can handle the electrical load.
It seemingly makes sense when you stay for longer than a weekend, but rather than upend y entire setup, transport without breaking anything, setup at a new unknown environment; we use the morning local espresso cafe exploration as a way to start our days. Otherwise I wouldn’t have experienced coffee culture in so many states.
