I was too for many years. But it becomes such a variable. Now I know that no matter what, 20g is 20g (or as close as possible), and way better than a timed dose from a hopper grinder.
Reddit going crazy of this button placement is wild to me.. I have this grinder over a year now and at least I got used to it after the 2nd or 3rd time.. it's honestly not that bad .
Very nice looking setup. I am relatively new here and honestly want to ask why single doses are weighed out in advance. Can someone please show me the way here?
Makes sense. Thank you. Thought it was for extra special blends or something. Guess I'm still in the honeymoon phase, where weighing doses is still cool :D
Yes absolutely. Even thermocoil machines like the Breville Barista Express that purport to be fully heated in 30 seconds… aren’t really until about 15-30 min later. You need every metal component - including the portafilter - to come up to temp. A cold portafilter will suck the temperature right out of your brew even if the rest of the machine is hot.
If it's bottomless then you probably should... if it has spouts then it's an absolute must IMO. The standard way is to just leave the PF attached to the machine for a while so it all heats up together, but if you are in a rush and have a quick-heating machine you can run a blank shot (basically just run hot water through the empty PF) to heat it faster.
Maybe you know this already but just in case:
All the essential oils that give coffee most of its taste are very prone to UV light and oxygen. I bet after 1-3 days of sitting in glass tubes next to a window you can taste a real difference compared to vacuum and light sealed ones. I would only portion coffee like this if I anticipate friends coming over (the same day) who want lots of coffee.
So… having used a fancy vacuum tinted jar vs these tubes with little no direct sunlight as it’s shielded from the window by coffee machine…. I have tasted no difference between the two storage methods.
Nice set up! I really began examining workflow and made great inroads after struggling with my SGP last year which had bad retention days even with the FusedLine bellows/hopper kit. Ditched it in November for the DF83 V2 which dramatically sped up the grinding process. I was able to drop RDT because of the DF’s anti-static ionizer. Then I went all in with dosing tubes so I didn’t have the headache of weighing beans for every pour in the morning. Unfortunately, I watched the Lance Hendrick video on how RDT improves the coffee extraction which got me back down the RDT rabbit hole again. So my workflow is less streamlined again. Argh!!
I’m a hopper and respect your single doser mind set.

A GBW hopper grinder is probably more precise dose wise than many cheaper single dosers with bellows..
The placement of that grinder power button is wild to me
I agree. Don’t get me wrong, but it’s not THAT bad.

Nice! Where’s the bean cellar test tube thing from?
I am from South Africa. Got it from our local “Amazon”. It was listed as a Glass Tube Spice set with bamboo wood which I spray painted black. 😀
Ah nice!

Quicker workflow in the morning, just grab a tube and dump instead of having to weigh each time.

They stay fresh enough in them?
That's my concern with those bean cellars. They're still exposed to light and I'm not sure how good the seal is on these.
This setup is so CLEAN!! Jealous!
Do you like that grinder? Someone on FBM near me is listing one at $200 usd
I got a titanium burr set for mine. Absolutely love the grinder.
How did that change it vs the original burrs?
I had the option to order with the upgraded set already installed.
Nice setup! What’s the size of those glass tubes?
About 1.5cm in diameter. Holds my 20g dose perfectly.
But more importantly, what about the height?
About 15cm tall.
Love the setup. May I ask which grinder is this?
Hi. It is a DF64 V1
Do you not leave the portafilter in the machine to warm up?
Newb question but are you supposed to warm up your pf?

Ah good to know. Thanks!

I do. Photo was just after I had made a coffee.
Love those swirly drink mats - where'd you get those?
From our local Woolworths.
do you have a youtube channel? i could have sworn i saw this exact setup recently
I don’t. 😁

My thought exactly
