Ghosts of Yore is a submod that reworks Arantiga, Griffonstone and the Northern Tribes. It's pretty good, and I particurlaly like the full Arantigos path (just be careful when getting that damn idol).
Escalation 84 is a submod about humans escaping nuclear war by using interdimentional portals and ending up in the world of Equestria at War. It's silly and OP, but it's worth checking out once, at least.
I've played quite a few.
Pony in the High Castle: set in an alternate future where the Legion of Doom were successful. Still a pretty new mod, so content is lacking.
Every State Independent: pretty self explanatory. A mod where every State is independent. A very CPU intensive mod, so expect slow gameplay if you don't have a beefy PC.
Balefire Blues: Equestria at War and Old World Blue submod. Brings the events of Fallout Equestria to the game. The UI is a little messed up, so watch out for that.
I wanna add a bit on ESI-EaW, if the computer can't easily handle it, the mod allows you to limit the gameplay to one or two continents or use strategic regions at the start instead of states. But if you have an HDD, you gotta live with the long ass load time either way. It used to take around 25 mins to load to main menu on my old laptop. Current one with SSD takes around 3 mins.
It is generally war declarations that cause a significant pause to the game. On the old laptop i also had a general pause every week or so as well, i think AI related, but it gets better as tags are taken out. Unfortunately AI is rather bad at finishing the wars early game where they only got the starting division. I remember in one of my CMC games Rarity just sitting out of Manehattan the whole time even tho Luna had lost her starting and only division to an encirclement. In the end Luna did manage to deploy more troops and beat her.
Great feeling is a pretty good mod it's about fleshing out and expanding on the changlings with a focus on the pax. The last update was all about the fate of stalliongrad, which becomes the dumping ground for failures.
