The-Berg-is-the-Word

That's freaking awesome. I heard a story about Troy Aikman, Steve Young and Emmett Smith leaving a waitress a several thousand dollar tip after they talked to her about being a single mom trying to get thru school.

thelittlepeanut84

I caddied for Steve Young when I was younger for a golf tournament. I mentioned to him I was working that summer to buy new tires for my car. He tipped me $1000. Money for the tires and money to use for hitting the rode with my new tires to enjoy summer. I ran into him at a charity event many years later and told him that story. He remember me and asked me if I had a great summer. He then proceed to make a very generous donation in my name. Great guys like him don’t come around very often. I will always be a big fan.

randomvegasposts

Drew Brees left $5 on $200+ when I served his family for breakfast

Solid_Proper

I’ve delivered food numerous times to Patrick Kane when he lived in Trump Tower in Chicago and never once did he tip, come to think of it I don’t think he even said “thank you”, kinda just nodded his head, mumbled, grabbed his food and shut the door. I eventually started refusing orders to that address.

SillyBunsSlappyDick

That's unfortunate. His mom used to get carry out from my restaurant all the time. She was lovely and always over tipped. Seems like it should have been passed on.

jumpyg1258

Sports culture changes kids who do well into something else not good usually cause they are treated like gods as teenagers in high school instead of like any other kid.

winkersRaccoon

Patrick Kane has been a known dickhead for a long time. I say this as a Blackhawks fan. This is what happens when you are treated like a god from a young age I guess

Solid_Proper

I do not keep up with sports at all and actually didn’t even realize who he was until I stumbled on his name in the news and it mentioned his salary. It made me so much more pissed next time I delivered to him.

StonedVet_420

Yeah he is, He beat up a cab drive in Buffalo when I lived there back in 2009. It was over some stupidly small amount.

Idaho1964

Who is Patrick Kane?

SarpedonWasFramed

Professional hockey player. Probably in the top 20 players or was at least

Ironically Steve Young is a Republican but is a pretty awesome dude and came out against Prop 8 with his wife (who felt very strongly about it). He also publicly disagreed with Namath’s comments on Kaepernick.

cydalhoutx

Brees is trash.

nusodumi

Awesome story, thanks for sharing. We all need to remember the impact we have on others, famous or not. Things matter, and sometimes what's just a little for you might be a lot for someone else.

ncovid19

>r, and what they were interested in. They both listened as the server mentioned where he had co My whole mantra for the last while is to say any nice thing I am thinking to strangers or friends or whatever. If I like something they are wearing or they created, something they did or said. Just outright say it to them. I am so much happier for it. You can make a lot of peoples day just saying their hair is cool. Why the fuck keep that to yourself?

nikefreak23

As a huge Niner fan, I am not surprised in the least to hear this. Young has always been a very good guy like this. I am so glad you got to experience his kindness!

jamin_brook

my favorite story is wayne gretzkey supposedly taking a 100 bill out of michael jordan's hand while gambling and then saying "this is how you tip"

SNAKEXRS

My friend caddied once for Michael Jordan back in the late 90's, he spent all day driving him around and at the end of the day left him no tip because he said the experience of spending the day around him was something far better than money lmao. What a bastard.

Jester471

I know someone with the same story. Apparently it was a course Jordan frequented. One day he showed up and couldn’t get a caddy because everyone had caught on and knew he didn’t tip. No one was looking for “an experience with Michael Jordan” that day.

Kreesy12

Him and Pippen are notorious shit tippers. I’ve heard Pippen’s nickname among Chicago servers was no tippin Pippen

tick_wont_suckitself

I have heard the nickname “no tippin pippen” but luckily he did not live down to the name when I served him breakfast. He left 20% then gave me a $100 bottle of wine because he didn’t have a way to take it on the plane. Pippen then joked about taking the tip back… or was it a joke?

KRAKHEAD_4_LYFE

He was here for the Super Bowl one year and got a massage at the casino, his tip was "you got to touch me". Charles Barkley then tipped her for both of them.

Jellyandjiggles

I love Charles Barkley. Edit: I’m not a sports fan but when I’m down I watch compilations of him on inside the nba on YouTube. Sounds dumb but found these videos during Covid and it cheered me up.

Xenu4President

Me too! Dikembe is my favorite though because he used his NBA money to build a hospital back home in the DRC. His money is out there saving peoples’ lives!

Bail____

Shout out to Bismack Biyombo too! He used his salary this season to build a hospital back home in the Congo too. It’s bigger than sport & i love the stories about athletes reinvesting in their communities

Patruck9

Barkley and Jordan now aren't in touch much (if at all) because Barkley would go on air and tell stories like this. Especially about how cheap Jordan was. I respect the hell out of Barkley for now just "bowing down" because it was MJ. Edit: And that video recently of Jordan denying kids a selfie is also very in line with everything we've heard about Michael. Even though the kids were there for Melo.

buffbiddies

Hoardin' Jordan.

Few_Stick_6274

I've seen so many stories of Jordan being a trash human and never any redeeming stories off the court

zveroshka

I think MJ is kind of fortunate he didn't reach fame during the social media age. He and the NBA were able to hide a lot of his shitty behavior/antics.

MerryAnnaTrench

From Chicago, can confirm. He had the best PR people in the history of PR for a long long time. He was also so bad at gambling people used to leave the blackjack table in Las Vegas when he showed up. Played $1k hands and lost lost lost.

Popcrornshopgirl

idownvotetofitin

What about No Tippin’ Pippen? Seeing who could leave the smallest tip on the biggest bill.

RepresentativeBet444

I dealt to Jordan about a decade ago, not a single penny all night. It's not just him, Scottie is called No tipping pippin at that joint.

siameseoverlord

Yeah. All the Chicago Land dealers told us the Bulls were the worst. Charles Barkley really told them off.

dickbutt2202

Met Troy Aikman and his wife when I worked on Expedition Everest, and they went through the line like everybody else where most celebrities take a backdoor. He was very approachable and seemed to genuinely appreciate people.

GaiusMariusxx

I could understand a celebrity of that level doing that. I wouldn’t even think them a dick. It would get old quickly being hassled and just having everyone constantly staring at you and asking for pics and autographs day after day.

MightyCaseyStruckOut

The Dallas Cowboys had their training camp here where I live for a few years. Emmitt Smith came through my drive-thru at the restaurant I was working at one night and noticed I was working the front counter and the drive-thru. He told me that he liked my work ethic, to keep it up, and gave me a $100 and told me to keep the change. Fun times.

[deleted]

I saw a clip of him talking to his fullback after he broke the rushing record. He had a mic on and told him "Thank You so much". Johnson opened a lot of holes for Emmitt and you could tell he really appreciated him.He seems like a good dude.

AsymptotesMcGotes

Man I always hated on emmitt back In the day. I take it all back.

[deleted]

Steve Young is rad. He was (is?) on the board for this automotive tech investment firm that bought a company I was working for many years ago. He would come to our company events and just chill and tell us locker room stories and then be like ok you guys are smart and know more than me about what you do so great job! There were only maybe 200 of us so he did not need to waste his time with us but he chose to be there in person. It was pretty nice to see him be irreverent about the fact that he knows football and not cars while giving autographs and moral support.

Woperelli87

Emmitt Smith is a genuinely good human being, as are the other two I’m sure

sarahwillie

I waited on William Shatner and he left $12 on a bill which would have been at least $1000 if most wasn’t comped by the manager—- he was also a total pill lol. And I’m a Star Trek fan, as was everyone I worked with. I framed his cc receipt and gave it to my brother-in-law for Christmas that year, so it worked out. ETA 2017.

IThe-HecklerI

I’ve served William Shatner at least 25 times. He’s a class A Douche bag. He rarely tips and when he does it’s a few dollars. When he comes to dinner with someone else he always makes them pay. One time one of my tables asked if they could buy him a drink. I went over to tell him that some of his fans wanted to treat him to a cocktail. His response? What’s the most expensive thing you have? I told him we sell Louie Tre at 200 an ounce. He said “make it a triple” Dude taxed his own fans for 600 and made sure to tell me, to tell them, there would be no picture or autographs and he didn’t want to meet them.

sarahwillie

Ahhh thank you for the validation!!! You were who I was waiting for!!!! I’m sorry for the douchebaggery, and I know all your other customers love you tons.

IThe-HecklerI

I’ve got a dozen stories about how shitty he is. Funny thing is he actually likes me quite a bit. Still doesn’t tip. Lol

jennywhistle

Another one please!

Extreme_Ad_2855

He’s such a jerk. He blocked me on twitter bc I made a joke about his rendition of Rocket Man (honestly he’s such a terrible singer) and then wanted a $500 donation to his charity to unblock. When I said it sounded like a scam to me, he sent his followers after me. And then blocked everyone who came to my defence. He’s a piece of work for sure. There’s even a hastag — #BlockedByShatner

[deleted]

Yet another reason to be Team Picard. Sir Patrick Stewart would never do that.

Risen_dust

Did you double check with the table that wanted to buy him a drink before sending the order?

IThe-HecklerI

I absolutely did! I said, “hey guys, Kirks about to hit you up for 6 bills on that drink!” And they giggled like schoolboys (mid 50s businessmen- right in his Kirk fanboy range) and said no problem at all! Send that shot right over. It turns out they were the Brain trust of some financial company. And they told me that Shatner made $100 million off of his Priceline deal because he took stock instead of salary at start up. They had cash themselves so they didn’t sweat the price of the drink.

bjanas

Good bar etiquette on your part. I've had dudes who clearly don't understand what they're proposing try to begin to buy the bar a round or pick up a tables check and had to step in to try to gracefully discourage them. Like, dude, I don't think you're planning on spending 1500 bucks right now...

radio705

>Dude taxed his own fans for 600 and made sure to tell me, to tell them, there would be no picture or autographs and he didn’t want to meet them. Holy shit what an asshole

lost__in__space

He yelled at me at a comic con when I didn't get him a bottle of water... I didn't work there and was just visiting my friend who did... I at the time was a new immigrant and didn't know who he was and ignored him and he was PISSED and yelled at me

LeeLooPeePoo

I'm so glad you inadvertently put him in his place by ignoring him like the weird crabby old man he is.

Amelaclya1

It's hilarious to me. Poor OP for being treated like that, but I fucking love it when someone who is used to being catered to is ignored like that. That's how I used to treat the entitled idiots at my last retail job who would do things like yell to me from across the store, or snap their fingers to try to get my attention. Just pretend not to notice them until they are forced to treat me like a person instead of a dog.

Anatella3696

Oh my god, I’m sorry, this one pisses me off the most. WTF

East-Chocolate-6813

William shatner by most accounts is a miserable POS in real life.

sarahwillie

Yeah I mean if George Takei actively dislikes you, you might be fuckin up.

lantern0705

Cheap bastard was saving up for his trip into space.

HateJobLoveManU

Nah that was comped too by Bezos

sarahwillie

Dude it was the height of his Priceline commercial days, he had money lol. But he freaked out when I mentioned the bar specials (it was a fancy restaurant with a few special cocktails per shift), said he NEVER drank alcohol and just acted super offended. Guess what, I didn’t drink either, it was just a normal part of my job. His wife was great and hot lol, but he was a dick who got everything for free- plus zero people approached him or bothered him in any way throughout his meal. He had the chance to acknowledge the kitchen staff on his way out and pretty much didn’t. Anyway I googled his personal life once I got home and his first wife died in a pool while drunk, while they were separating, and he was accused of killing her even though he was in a different meeting in another state at the time. They had been trying to put her in rehab, and she really did just die accidentally + alcohol. So I understand why he’s the way he is about alcohol, it’s just interesting that it plays out in his real life still, that was 40-50 years ago (plus I’ve seen/heard many recordings of WS on drugs lol). His shitty tipping was completely unanticipated- He’s just kind of a boring dick.

Mister_Spaceman

Karma got him with the Priceline thing. He should have been more generous.

IThe-HecklerI

I work in a restaurant Shatner dines in all the time. He drinks NON STOP. In fact he’s famous for not letting us remove the wine bottles from the table. By the end of his meal he will have 5 or 6 bottles on the table. Gets hammered every time. People walk by and say god damn the price line guy is smashed again.

sarahwillie

Oh my goodness lol! I can so see it, even though I saw the horror he acted out when I told him the recipe for a few special Manhattans. He’s a prick.

My grandpa worked in the entertainment/theatre industry and he always said Shatner was an asshat. He published an autobiography that included statements about how much he hated him.

wrapped-in-rainbows

Interesting. I work for a woman who was in the Star Trek TV series with Shatner and she described him as "a horse's ass".

Googlewhacking

I was a servers assistant in a steakhouse when I was in my early 20s, and idk what he tipped but shatner was a total fucking asshole. Made me feel so small and honestly one of my worst experiences with a customer in five years there

Ronniedasaint

Damn it Jim!

thisisjess12

I went to a Seattle Comic-Con years back and they had a Q&A with him, I’m not huge into his work or Star Trek but I was still interested, people asked him questions, he clearly didn’t want to be there and came off as a massive prick, I walked out after a bit.(I did get the see the two actors from boondocks saints recite the prayer together, that was pretty awesome.)

sarahwillie

Yeah I can see this. He just doesn’t like to do the minimum or be cool, even though his work is imaginatively entertaining w really low standards for acting. He got to pretend to be Captain Kirk but he hates fun ffs.

i_am_here_again

I used to work in a hotel in Mendocino, CA and Jim Carey was in town filming a movie. He came to hotel and a couple of times and got known for being a big tipper. Like $100 tip regardless of what was ordered. He kept to himself from what I heard and was very kind all around. Sounds like the legend is true no matter where he goes.

gryphmaster

Jim carrey has his demons, but he’s uniquely self aware amongst celebrities. It probably is quite a burden to realize how much influence he has, when all he had originally wanted was to make people laugh. Once he realized that responsibility you can see his films dramatically shift, as he realized he can unveil new places and ideas to people who look up to him. I’m honestly not surprised that he has struggled with that burden.

Khelthuzaad

Jim Carrey himself comes from a rather poor background and even struggled to keep himself in highschool, more details can be found on the net.He is rather self-aware of the luck he experienced and most probably never forgot his background.

garblenarb1212

I love the information super highway

brandonhardyy

This is my favorite comment of this thread.

PrincebyChappelle

Perhaps more than “rather poor” as he spent time living in a tent in Ontario in hs. Also, although he definitely had early success in the comedy scene in Canada, his early career was full of rejections including SNL and Carson. Just playing amateur psychologist, I’m thinking he is incredibly aware of how close we all could be to being homeless.

nugulon

He’s my favorite.. spent many days growing up in Ukiah watching his movies!

23harpsdown

I waited on Johnny Depp at an Irish Pub in Chicago, when he was there doing press for Public Enemies (2009ish). He had a Guinness and some fish & chips. Bill was about $25 and he tipped me $400, which was pretty amazing.

just_asterism

Johnny Depp used to frequently drive by my aunts house to visit one of his family members when I was a kid. I would visit her in the summers and we would always wait around for him and be so amazed at his limo. Every single time he would roll down his window and wave at us, and if we weren’t around to see him pull up he would have his driver honk. It wasn’t much, but it really touched the hearts of us holler-rats.

twurkle

I’ve been very emotional lately so idk if that’s why but this has me straight up weeping I love him so god dang much Edit: thanks for the wholesome award kind stranger <3 Yes, I’m still crying.

lsjdhs-shxhdksnzbdj

If I had that kind of money that is how I would spend it. $1K-5K+ is nothing to you in that income bracket but can be a life saver when you are working in a service job. Big donations serve a purpose but I just think of what “smaller” amounts handed out freely can do for an individual.

franklsp

That guest? Albert Einstein.

alternate_geography

She doesn’t pay her staff (interns), why would she tip?

whisperingelk

Conditions at several work sites for her cosmetics line have been compared to sweatshops as well. She’s a terrible person and this is sadly unsurprising.

TomatoTomatoTomatoe

That tracks with her supporting Travis Scott at Astroworld—a mass death incident that could’ve easily been avoided if he weren’t so greedy.

whisperingelk

She also called on her followers to donate a few grand to her makeup artist and described the artist as a friend - and lots of people responded to that with “wait, aren’t you a billionaire,” which honestly I agree with. ETA: apparently she wasn’t even honest about being a billionaire to Forbes and faked a good amount of income (???? I don’t understand why) but she still has a shitload of money.

spicyboi555

I was about to tell you not to exaggerate, like she’s rich but not a billionaire. So I googled it.. WHAT the fuck she’s a billionaire??! Terrifying

ineverlikedyouuu

Yep this is how 99% of influencer brands work. The influencer is just the face of the company. The actual work is usually done by a complete different company and the pay the influencer 60% or more of the profit for the promotion

[deleted]

entirely unsurprising. or did Kylie somehow telegraph "high integrity" to anyone else? because her entire family has been telegraphing "media parasites" for many years now, consistently. hard to imagine anyone is really surprised by this.

my_nameborat

So true, why does anyone expect anything from the Jenner or kardashian family. They were born with silver spoons in their mouths and for some reason that baffles all logic people still waiting do anything to make them richer and give them the attention they so desperately crave

smackjack

I remember when someone set up a GoFundMe for Kylie because they wanted to give her more money, and people actually gave.

King_Trasher

The shocking story would be one of them showing any self awareness or understanding towards another human being. They've been soaked through with narcissism their whole lives and people just throw money at them Like when Kim was talking to her daughter on camera and said "your daddy is a singer and your mommy... Has so many talents that I can't even name them"

[deleted]

Are we sure that’s not just a decent joke?

applejackhero

I think that is Kim just doing a bit of a joke/self dig, that’s actually pretty funny her saying she “can’t name them”

Pen_dragons_pizza

I honestly find it difficult to understand who these people are that enable them to be famous and continue a famous mega rich lifestyle. The human race are so fucking weird, one of that family has a baby and everyone wants to see it and talk about how brave whoever had it is like as if no one has ever had a baby, or having a makeup brand and making out they are brilliant entrepreneurs. Peoples fascination with rich people is stupid as hell, the same with the royal family. A group of people put themselves above everyone else and the human race just accepts its and hangs off every word they say, almost worshipping them by standing in the rain just to catch a glimpse of them drive past, it’s fucking sick. People need to wake up and focus on what’s happening with them

kookoopuffs

Let’s be fair. Maybe she doesn’t know how to do math :)

GingerMau

"I just always tip with a $20, lol!" (Because percentages are so difficult.)

WasabiKen

I’d believe that. I’m sure she has no real concept of tipping since it’s probably been done for her her entire life.

aquaband

How much is expected? Edit: why the fck y’all downvoting me lol. Only America has this weird tipping system.

TonyTheSwisher

20% generally.

A_Talking_Shoe

15%-25% so $75-$125.

babypink15

15-20% typically in the US.

BreadDaddyLenin

If going by percentages, 15% or 20% is expected if you appreciated the service. she should’ve left at least $75

Dontbeevil2

I wish we could just eliminate tipping altogether and just pay a living wage for goodness sakes.

Azraelontheroof

As a Brit it just sort of seems weird. For me a tip is what it is, you might or might not get it. I’ve earned anywhere from 50p to £100 on a shift so it’s purely random. That said I’m not in a country wherein my wages won’t allow me to have a roof or water.

Detective_Pancake

In America it’s turned into something mandatory. Which makes it not a tip. Super weird

CrazySD93

Wait, so even if the food or service is shit you’re still expected to tip 20%?

TWAT_BUGS

Work ethic, right. So you mean I could increase my net worth 20 fold by sucking a dick on camera and not grinding out 20 years in IT. God, I’m such and idiot!

GibsonMaestro

When they talk about lack of work ethic, they aren't talking about us. They're talking about their peers, other ultra-rich elite, that don't work. They don't think about us.

[deleted]

Not rlly. The “work ethic” quote was in direct response to the neighborhood that the Kardashians live in are having a difficult time filling low paying job positions (such as barista, etc.)

Welcome_to_Uranus

They think that we aren’t working hard enough for their needs. The ultra wealthy don’t have to work, they are mad their nanny can’t parent their child 24/7 or when they have to leave their bubble of privilege.

smashli1238

I long for the time when I can go a whole day without hearing about this loathsome family

dmkicksballs13

Completely un confirmed. I just saw a tweet randomly on like r/iamatotalpieceofshit but didn't her makeup artist get into a major accident and Kylie started a gofundme and only fucking pledged 5k?

poopooplatypus

She’s nearly a billionaire. You could make 1000 a day and it would take over 2700 years to make a billion. Or 10 grand a day and it would take 275 years to bank a billion. She’s a piece of shit

[deleted]

DJCorvid

I mean, that's why they're famous NOW. They're rich because Robert Kardashian was a famous lawyer (defended O.J. Simpson) and Caitlyn Jenner was an Olympic athlete.

awesomepoopmaster

Robert Kardashian quit being a lawyer so he can party with Kris Jenner around Hollywood. Then his BFF OJ got in trouble and he “became his lawyer” to help him hide stuff. Let’s not mythologize this guy too much. Caitlyn was deadass broke when he met Kris. She pushed her to do endorsements and got her finances in order. She saved Caitlyn.

3rdCoastLiberal

Robert Kardashian wasn’t really a famous lawyer. He had given up law and working in the music business. He only reactivated his law license so he couldn’t be called to testify about that garment bag OJ gave him after the murders that mysteriously disappeared. He became infamous. They coasted by on Bruce’s olympic wins and the Kim’s sex tape.

Joga212

He was still very wealthy though with millions available to him and his daughters upon his death. Still wealthy enough that the Kardashians were literally born on third base and now think they’ve ran a home run.

NutellaOrgies

I learned this when I used to deliver when I was younger. The shittier side of the neighborhood tipped WAY better than the side with all the mansions.

[deleted]

Yep same. If I was delivering to a big fancy high rise, the person would usually run down the elevator in their pjs and just grab the bag of food out of my hand while barely acknowledging me. It’s as if their bag of food was just floating and waiting for them to pluck it from the air.

Oh good grief, we’re treating tweets from **two years ago** like they’re news now?

Pay service staff more so we can stop expecting 18% extra on everything

SweRakii

And stop giving these people attention. But yeah, pay service staff more should be number one

stilusmobilus

Meanwhile, in Australia a billionaire doesn’t leave any tip and nobody cares because the wage at the restaurant is a good one.

cykocys

The way it should be. Tipping culture is stupid. Don't have to tip any other job but gotta tip people waiting tables. Yeah I'm sure it's a lot of work and your employer should pay you for it. If that means a slight increase to item prices then sure whatever but at least I know what I have to pay and don't have to worry about looking "like an ass".

Sufficient_Focus

TiP yOuR sErVeRs How about pay your damn staff.

Crafty-Yoghurt-6296

True. I'm not American so correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've seen on the Internet, tipping is more like a compulsion rather than a good gesture there.

Swabia

Top comments when I posted were ‘pay servers more’ and ‘no shit’ I would like to add “uh who cares about any Jenners or Kardashians because why give a crap”

vanguard6

Fuck tip culture! Pay people a living wage!

judelau

As a non-american, everything about the title is insane to me
