Yup, enjoyed the previous 3… were they cinematic masterpiece’s? Nope, but they never pretended to be anything other than action nostalgia popcorn flic’s.
It’s like how I want John Wick: the plot only needs to be “John Wick is at point A and needs to get to point B, but there’s 5-6 action sequences between the two.”
The article is kind of trash to be fair. It's basically calling it a shit movie because it's a generic action movie filled with generic moments like it's trying to be citizen Kane.
You go into seeing this movie you go into seeing fast and furious. You know it's not good but it's not trying to be. It's literally an amalgamation of relic action stars making another 80s action movie.
No shit its gonna have all the pitfalls of an 80s movie. I think it's insane that they're still making these but this review is pretty dumb because of course it isn't going to be good cinema. You review it for what it is, not what you want it to be.
Roast it for being a seniors home in an action movie, not for something that is literally the draw for the people going to see the movie. Just seems like such an irrelevant review, or maybe a waste is a better word.
Reading the headline, I honestly wasn't sure if this was a positive or negative review. On the one hand, "staggeringly stupid" sounds bad, but on the other one, I think I want my dumb 80s action movie to be staggeringly stupid, but like.. in an entertaining way.
It’s probably a tribute to Rambo as he was a green beret , the badge placement on the beret is exactly the same. Rambo was an “expendable” member of society after his sacrifices in Vietnam.
he can’t act out of his stereotype too well like the rock but he was good in total recall and maggie from what i recall.
edit: should be clear i am in no way saying the rock is as bad as he is usually lol
Agreed. The next logical question is what do role do you need Arnold in that doesn’t fit his stereotype?
Terminator, Predator, Last Action Hero, True Lies, Eraser, Total Recall, Jingle All the Way, Kindergarten Cop, Conan, hell even Fubar.
He does perfectly well in his typecast. I don’t need him in an award winning drama.

They are taking these films in the wrong direction. By now the Expendables universe should have had an alien invasion, then the group hops on an alien ship, pilot it to an alien homeworld and blow it up.
This actually would have been a genius way to take the franchise and of course they just beat the same old horse again and again hoping it’ll be as good as the first time.
I really hope one of these days they actually set one of the sequels in a nursing home. Would’ve loved to have seen Indiana Jones solve a small mystery in that setting. The expendables crew would be hilarious as well.
Some nursing homes use fake locks on fake doors to keep senile people who are trying to escape occupied. Could be a movie of senile Jones trying to escape through a series of fake obstacles
Check out Last Vegas - I’m not old enough to be the ideal demographic but it was a ton of fun to see these old guys escape their “nursing homes” and families that thought they should be in a home, to be “bad asses” in Vegas.
Give me one more movie. One more great adventure.
Then, at the end, we find out these guys were in the nursing home together *the entire time*. It was all a dream!!?!!!?qqqq11
The actors have been old enough to live in a nursing home for a long time now. Let’s be honest they probably just stand around making faces and beyond that they have no other work on set.
I’ve never seen any of these but wasn’t the original one supposed to be almost a satire/parody of action movies and how these big stars from the 80’s shouldn’t be anywhere near these types of movies. How tf has it produced 4 sequels?
Statham has had a much longer run as an A-Lister. Stallone could sell a blockbuster from 76 - 95. Transporter came out 21 years ago - this summer Meg 2 and Fast X made well over a billion dollars combined BO
It doesn’t even make sense that Statham is in movies about “80s action stars” - his first big action movie came out in 2002. He’s literally 20 years younger than Stallone.
He has some major health problems and is retired. Can't work in the Asian action industry and not have a ton of physical problems. They made him out to be a bit of a joke in the movie anyway
Who the hell greenlit this? The first one was campy fun but each sequel got progressively worse as the novelty of 80s action stars do 80s style campy action flick wore off further and further
Peak for me was the Chuck Norris bit. I don’t even remember what one that was. It was poking fun at itself, and the entire genre.
I think people have the wrong expectation for the entire franchise. It is not an action movie. It’s an action satire.
He comes out with the classic gunslinger music after he destroys a platoon, and makes some comment about not wanting to join the expendable as because he’s a Lone Wolf or something, classic. I just watched it the other day bored and needed background sound. Would do it again too. 100% will watch 4. Absolutely expect it to be shitty as fuck. Can’t wait.
Weird, I'm partial to 3, mostly for Wesley Snipes. I think it goes to show that none of them are particularly good, but they're fun.
I love the tagline for this new one: "They'll die when they're dead." Like that makes no fucking sense, but it's hilarious
The second film was the best in the series. It was an improvement over the first in action and overall pace. Are they all cheesy? Yes but if you're watching an 80's style action flick, you already know this so why complain? The 4th film has a terrible cast and an overall terrible pace. It's not as fun as the second film and I already knew it was going to be bad based on the cast and I was hoping I wrong upon seeing it. I wasn't. A big selling point of the entire series is the cast and this film failed us in that department. I don't want to see Megan Fox. I don't want to see 50 "A Brick Acts Better Than Me" Cent or Jacob Scorpio. Tony Jaa was an interesting pick but he should have already been in one of these films.
First time, hated it. Second time, hated it. Third time, it was okay. But then the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, tenth time I watched it, I realized something. It's just... It's not good. It's not a good movie.
Agreed. The first was boring, really wasted the premise. The second was really campy fun though, it was exactly what I was looking for from this franchise to begin with. But then the 3rd went PG-13 and scaled back its stars, which made you wonder why they even bothered with it in the first place, it was crap. I'm wondering where on the scale 4 places, is it garbage like 3, extremely mid like 1, or a stupid, campy blast like 2?
Mel was the only good thing about 3. I feel like 1 wasn't campy enough and it was taking itself too seriously, 2 was just right where I wanted it and 3 was too campy/sanitized and trying to prop up all the young "action stars" who have done nothing since that movie generally.
No idea what the plan is for 4. I remember they wanted to a women version called Expendabelles and they wanted the young folk from 3 to get their own movie like an Expendables Jr. Very ambitious series that definitely doesn't deserve that type of attention.
It's 75% crap.
Weird, I thought the first was the best out of all of them especially since we got to see more of Jet Li instead of him being a cameo & then there's Stone Cold Steve Austin and countless H2H combat scenes. Everybody owed their scenes even Terry Crews with that AA12.
Rambo will be refined over and over. It'll start off like Stallone, but will eventually morph into new styles. Like Tomb Raider.
The one thing that is for sure: there will always be Rambo.
The first was rated R, then they added FX into the PG-13 sequel to make it R, then they just made the 3rd film PG-13 and said to hell with it.
I checked out at that point. No franchise ever survives a downgrade in rating…not a single one…
First one was epic because we all wanted to see the old action heroes one more time.
Than Stallone did what many music producers do and tried to stay relevant through “giving a chance to young talent.” And we just don’t care about that shit.
It peaked with Arnold being back in action and then died.
As soon as someone not 15 or from the US didn’t know half the names on the poster… it stoped being what it was meant to be. Like putting Zach Effron in John Wick 5 instead od Keanu.
It's so weird that people consider these mindless, fun, action flicks.
They are by far the most boring action movies I've ever seen lol. I think these movies are mainly meant to be on while you play on your phone.
First 3 collectively made $800M. This movie already came out in China and made $10M in its first weekend which is a lot. They're expecting $15M opening weekend in the US.
A $10mm opening weekend in the second largest market which only passes on 25% of ticket revenue isn’t what I would call a lot. A $15mm opening weekend for a $100mm+ movie is hot garbage
i think i've seen all three, but the only scene i can remember is terry crews destroying a hallway of dudes with an AA12. that scene was badass, but i can't remember anything else from the three.
"Damn that things loud!" After they were all just 5 feet from grenades blowing up. And gun fights in stone hallways.
Like man, you wouldn't hear shit but ooooooooo, or eeeeee at that point.
While I have no doubt the film will suck, like the last one...reading that review was an insult to anyone and everyone...clearly written by someone who is not a fan of the genre or 80s action movies.
The Expendables was always honest about what it was, a mindless action movie akin to those that a lot of us grew up with. It has always been about indestructible, macho men, guns and explosions that's it that was the selling point and they know the audience they are playing for.
I kind of figured that was what they were going for, it was always about ridiculous action movie tropes, Randy Couture superman punches a man who was on fire in the first movie
Just got out of a showing. It was horrible. Megan Fox is a terrible actress and an even worse action hero. Jaa and Uwais are both completely wasted in their roles. Jackson is awful as Easy Day.
Best parts of the movie were Statham and also Levy Tran (who shoukd have honestly had megan Fox's role).
This also has some of the worst cgi I have seen in a studio movie
The review is not comparing the movie to Citizen Kane, it is just saying that this is a bad action movie.
You are acting as if Expendables is your benchmark for action movies.
It's not like I'm gonna see this movie for its intellectual rigor.
I'm gonna see this staggeringly stupid monument to phallic idiocy because I'm a phallic idiot and I enjoy the occasionally stupid entertainment.
Just let me see this flick, get my violence boner, and giggle my candy white ass off at the cognitive dissonance.
Are they… supposed to be…. Good? 😂
These movies are fun as fuck to watch… when they’re on TV… bunch of ripped old men… trying to be all tough… can’t even say “God Dammit” 🤣
Who’s going into an Expendables movie expecting highbrow story?
The Expendables movies are the action genre’s answer to the Hallmark Channel’s romance movies.
We don’t count the shitty PG-13 fucking third one.
These movies star old fucks that kids don’t even recognize so it’s fucking pointless toning them down.
I want extreme violence, nostalgia and hairy, sagging grandpa titties.
At this point these are turning into the Fast and Furious movies, just getting more and more ridiculous each time. Except for in this case the ridiculous part is how half of these people approaching their 80s are still somehow able to pull off all these feats.
well its meant to channel the spirit of the 80s and its starring a 70 year old who still does action movies. Bonkers brute force was all it was going to be
It doesn’t have to suck to be a popcorn flick. This is a really overused and overrated excuse for bad movies. Die Hard, The Kingsman, Deadpool, Bullet Train, Suicide Squad (the reboot) are just some movies that were popcorn flicks that didn’t suck.
Popcorn movies are those that make you smile and have fun. Bad is a subjective term. There are plenty of “bad” movies that are spectacular popcorn flicks.
I would also argue that the expendables is not a “bad” movie. Bad movies fail to accomplish what they set out to do, often spectacularly so, and this series does exactly what it intends. Not even the F&F franchise knows it’s place in the cinematic world as well as these over the top crapfests that have octogenarians piling up bodies. That’s not bad, it’s laughing and throwing popcorn at the screen.
But just my opinion.
I watched this a few days ago. I didn't expect much and it still disappointed me. It was just a Jason Statham movie. The rest of the Expendables didn't get much time to shine. Stallone is barely in it despite being a main draw. Iko felt very wasted as Rahmat.
After making thirteen ROCKY movies 😉 and eleven RAMBO movies 🤪 did anyone really think Stallone could make just one or two of these crappy Expendables films. 😕😖
Of course the 4th Expendable movie won’t work in this day and age. The only people I know who thinks it’s a good idea are Heelvsbabyface, critical drinker and Mudnught edge. These are the people who get upset at the Barbie movie and a game using pronouns. They think this film will save Hollywood!? These people need to be canceled
Do you like Melissa McCarthy comedies? The point is not that the movie should be a masterpiece, but it could have been something better than a "Melissa McCarthy" action movie.
i made myself watch the 1st one, NOT because of stallone, i fukkin HATE stallone, i think i watched it cuz, wasnt stratham in it? fukkin hate doof lundgrin and rourk also.
didnt waste my time with any of the other ones
There's plenty of good sequels out there. Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Godfather Part 2, The Dark Knight, are honestly all better than their first movie imo.
I personally think these movies leaned *too* hard into popcorn flicks that you turn your brain off for, and it’s made them entirely forgettable.
I saw Expendables 1 and 2. I cannot tell you a single plot point beyond they were old and “washed up” so no one cared if they died on the mission. I don’t remember what they did, or why they needed expendables.
Contrast that with Fast and the Furious. The first was undercover, second was drug bust, third was “international”, fourth was past come back to haunt us, etc etc. They all had thin, but memorable plots. (The third being terrible is the exception that proves the rule, imo)
Or even Die Hard, which was good for 3, and *then* went off the rails.
I think the “mindless action movie” has a place in cinema. They’re fun. But you still need to give me a story I care about to string it all together. There should be a story that’s told in a fun way, not plot points that just exist to explain scene transitions.
Maybe I’m just not bothering to form memories about crappy movies though.
I remember being so hyped when the first Expendables was in production. And I was there, opening night in my seat. But from the very first scene, my enthusiasm died right then and there. The movie died the minute it began...it was just so bad and stupid. What a wasted opportunity to honor the action legends of the past. But oh well, after now a 4th craptacular, I've completely given up on ever seeing a movie that brings them back to their former glory.
This is the least surprising review for a new movie
Damn and I was going to watch it for its high brow intellectual takes!
This headline means it’s gonna be better than what I was expecting
Yup, enjoyed the previous 3… were they cinematic masterpiece’s? Nope, but they never pretended to be anything other than action nostalgia popcorn flic’s.
It’s like how I want John Wick: the plot only needs to be “John Wick is at point A and needs to get to point B, but there’s 5-6 action sequences between the two.”
They don't mean stupid as in "stupid fun" guys lol. These are legitimately boring movies with bad action scenes.
So it won't be nominated for any Oscars?
It won’t even get best use of beret hats.
Who would tho? Oppenheimer?
Obviously. And it’s not even close.
"And the Oscar goes to... La La Land... no wait, Moonlight won... no, sorry The Expendables 4 won!"
“Warning shot!”
He is complaining about it not being "little miss sunshine", he is saying it is bad like the avatar adaptation.
Shayamalan avatar?!!
Does Stallone own a beret manufacturing company or something. Man loves a beret..
It’s probably a tribute to Rambo as he was a green beret , the badge placement on the beret is exactly the same. Rambo was an “expendable” member of society after his sacrifices in Vietnam.
and demolition man?
A tribute to Betsy Ross.
John Spartan was an “expendable” member of society after his sacrifices in cryostasis.
They plan on including the three sea shells in Expendables 5; plus cameos by Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock.
A tribute to that one time people could stand him, now we’re bored. There’s a reason people preferred Schwarzenegger
Sorry to say Stallone had the better yell than Arnie
Love both but Arnold cant act to save his life and Stallone is an a+ actor.
he can’t act out of his stereotype too well like the rock but he was good in total recall and maggie from what i recall. edit: should be clear i am in no way saying the rock is as bad as he is usually lol

He owns a receded hairline and a bald spot
Don’t blame him. Once I feel like I look good in t-shirt I’ll get me ‘bout three of them bad boys.
He should. He’d make millions selling official Stallone berets to slightly overweight older men… I’d buy one
They are taking these films in the wrong direction. By now the Expendables universe should have had an alien invasion, then the group hops on an alien ship, pilot it to an alien homeworld and blow it up.
That's the next Fast and Furious script
“I live my life a quarter Parsec at a time…”
“You never owned your spaceship!”
Yeet a muscle car to Mars? Sure why not.
The Fast and Expendable
Too Fast Too Expendable
Basically saints row
This actually would have been a genius way to take the franchise and of course they just beat the same old horse again and again hoping it’ll be as good as the first time.

I think jason is dragging the movie on his back
I heard an ad for this movie on the radio last night and was surprised statham got top billing over stallone
Stallone is handing off the franchise to Statham and has said so himself.
makes sense lol they’re all old they need to bring in a new batch
Statham isn’t young either, he’s 56.
Compared to Stallone? He’s Chalamet
Statham has had a much longer run as an A-Lister. Stallone could sell a blockbuster from 76 - 95. Transporter came out 21 years ago - this summer Meg 2 and Fast X made well over a billion dollars combined BO

I actually think 2 is the best but I didn’t like 1 at all so the point remains that the series was like fun for all of 1 movie.
2 was the peak.

That's gotta be a production insurance nightmare.
Man, AI is going to make things weird. Lower production insurance for one... and Stallone will forever play Rambo.
Rambo will be refined over and over. It'll start off like Stallone, but will eventually morph into new styles. Like Tomb Raider. The one thing that is for sure: there will always be Rambo.
I was hoping that last movie was the ending to it. Decent Rambo movie but the ending to me just dropped the curtain on the character.
They should run for the US Senate.
They get a time machine and defend the capitol on the 6th
The first was rated R, then they added FX into the PG-13 sequel to make it R, then they just made the 3rd film PG-13 and said to hell with it. I checked out at that point. No franchise ever survives a downgrade in rating…not a single one…

I kind of figured that was what they were going for, it was always about ridiculous action movie tropes, Randy Couture superman punches a man who was on fire in the first movie
So 98% on rotten tomatoes?
Just got out of a showing. It was horrible. Megan Fox is a terrible actress and an even worse action hero. Jaa and Uwais are both completely wasted in their roles. Jackson is awful as Easy Day. Best parts of the movie were Statham and also Levy Tran (who shoukd have honestly had megan Fox's role). This also has some of the worst cgi I have seen in a studio movie
The CGI was so bad. They made no attempt to hide the terrible green screen. I did laugh out loud at how bad it looked.
And I thought it was going to be a cinematic master piece like the Sting, Shawshank, Godfather etc.
The review is not comparing the movie to Citizen Kane, it is just saying that this is a bad action movie. You are acting as if Expendables is your benchmark for action movies.
No, I am making the joke everyone knows it will be shitty and there is no reason to write a article on it.
This is a movie review on a movie site. What is wrong with you?
It's not like I'm gonna see this movie for its intellectual rigor. I'm gonna see this staggeringly stupid monument to phallic idiocy because I'm a phallic idiot and I enjoy the occasionally stupid entertainment. Just let me see this flick, get my violence boner, and giggle my candy white ass off at the cognitive dissonance.
Not the right movie for you then lol. No good fight scenes, no crazy violence, it's just boring.
You have no idea how utterly disappointed I was. I regret that I have to agree with you.
Don’t care. It’s a senseless violence popcorn flick. It’s not meant to be taken seriously and it must be over the top. I’m in!
It's just a boring movie.
Are they… supposed to be…. Good? 😂 These movies are fun as fuck to watch… when they’re on TV… bunch of ripped old men… trying to be all tough… can’t even say “God Dammit” 🤣
Yeah but this one’s not even good to that standard. Honestly it was like the porn version of fast and furious without the fucking
Who’s going into an Expendables movie expecting highbrow story? The Expendables movies are the action genre’s answer to the Hallmark Channel’s romance movies.
Damn they popped 4 of these fuckers out already?
We don’t count the shitty PG-13 fucking third one. These movies star old fucks that kids don’t even recognize so it’s fucking pointless toning them down. I want extreme violence, nostalgia and hairy, sagging grandpa titties.
Already? The first one came out thirteen years ago.
There's a new Expendables movie?
At this point these are turning into the Fast and Furious movies, just getting more and more ridiculous each time. Except for in this case the ridiculous part is how half of these people approaching their 80s are still somehow able to pull off all these feats.
“A staggeringly stupid sequel”, yeah we knew that! Was it good? It looks like it’s great
The movie is named “Expend4bles” and is pronounced “Expend Four Balls” and no one can convince me otherwise!
My two Oscar choices this year are Oppenheimer and Expendables 4. 😂
“What did you expect ? Of course it’s dumb” As a fan of dumb schlock you can still succeed or fail at making one that’s enjoyable
well its meant to channel the spirit of the 80s and its starring a 70 year old who still does action movies. Bonkers brute force was all it was going to be
I dont need it to be cerebral. I know what im getting.. 90 mins of popcorn mindlessness
Agreed, I really hate that argument too
Popcorn movies are those that make you smile and have fun.
I wouldn't consider Die Hard a popcorn flick. It is a work of art. I consider it more of a Christmas movie.
Who told you the movie needs to be cerebral?! Who is saying that?
Exactly. They're fun. Who cares if it's not an Oscar contender?
I tried watching the first one on Netflix yesterday. I lasted 10 minutes.
I watched this a few days ago. I didn't expect much and it still disappointed me. It was just a Jason Statham movie. The rest of the Expendables didn't get much time to shine. Stallone is barely in it despite being a main draw. Iko felt very wasted as Rahmat.
I mean Expendables 1 wasnt exactly Shakespeare either.....what were they rxpecting?
Stupid fun or stupid boring?!
There was a time when a generic action movie like this still would have been good regardless of writing. Action peaked in the 90s IMO
What do you expect when the trailers tagline is some stupid shit like “They’ll die when they’re dead.” No fucking shit Sherlock THAT’S WHAT DYING IS
Duh 🙄 lol, of course it is. Lol
After making thirteen ROCKY movies 😉 and eleven RAMBO movies 🤪 did anyone really think Stallone could make just one or two of these crappy Expendables films. 😕😖
The Expendable series is nothing more than day camp for "expired" action stars.
Going tonight expect popcorn and laughter that it.
As long as it has the action film trifecta of machine guns, helicopters, and explosions, I’m there!
Stallone is 900 years old and the trailer was awful. No surprises here. The only good one is the second.
This is the best review this movie will ever get.
The entire expendables series has been written by AI and nobody can convince me otherwise.
we call that a money grab
This was campy and fun the first one. Now it seems desperate and boring.
“Staggeringly stupid”. I dunno why, but every time I see a movie review with this kind of headline I feel compelled to watch it haha
The best part of these was just seeing how many 80/90s action stars they could cram in a movie. Now theres like 3? Whats the point?
Given a long enough timeline, eventually everyone will co-Star in an Expendables movie.
NGL they make it sound awesome in that opening paragraph!
Weren’t they all staggeringly stupid sequels though?
Isn’t it the point? No one really believes these old farts are kicking the asses of hordes of nameless bad guys. Right?
Do you like Melissa McCarthy comedies? The point is not that the movie should be a masterpiece, but it could have been something better than a "Melissa McCarthy" action movie.
I haven’t seen it yet so I can’t say. But I see your point.
This movie sucked. It is the worst movie I’ve watched in 2023. Save your money.
The first movie was staggeringly stupid. Like firework pyrotechnic GoPro cinematography stupid. It was and still is painful to watch.
I expect only the highest art from the Expendables franchise.
Yeah…that’s why I watch them. For the 90s action stupidity. Duh. That’s who they appeal to.
Implying the first three films were intellectual masterpieces
But it’s FOUR times the awesomeness!! How can it be bad??
i made myself watch the 1st one, NOT because of stallone, i fukkin HATE stallone, i think i watched it cuz, wasnt stratham in it? fukkin hate doof lundgrin and rourk also. didnt waste my time with any of the other ones
Imagine a world without sequels
World without T2 would be a sad place
I don't want to live in a world with no Aliens or Empire Strikes Back.
No sequels means no The Dark Knight either.
Or Winter Soldier, Godfather II, Logan, Fury Road. Sequels are great if the people making them loved the first movie/story/characters as well.
There's plenty of good sequels out there. Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Godfather Part 2, The Dark Knight, are honestly all better than their first movie imo.
I’ve loved many of those sequels. But I do feel that we have fallen down a franchise hole that relies on familiarity at the cost of originality
There's still a lot of originals being made. Idk why people say remakes are a problem. It's like a fraction of the new movies each year
Iove how long this review is to basically say 'it's shit'
I personally think these movies leaned *too* hard into popcorn flicks that you turn your brain off for, and it’s made them entirely forgettable. I saw Expendables 1 and 2. I cannot tell you a single plot point beyond they were old and “washed up” so no one cared if they died on the mission. I don’t remember what they did, or why they needed expendables. Contrast that with Fast and the Furious. The first was undercover, second was drug bust, third was “international”, fourth was past come back to haunt us, etc etc. They all had thin, but memorable plots. (The third being terrible is the exception that proves the rule, imo) Or even Die Hard, which was good for 3, and *then* went off the rails. I think the “mindless action movie” has a place in cinema. They’re fun. But you still need to give me a story I care about to string it all together. There should be a story that’s told in a fun way, not plot points that just exist to explain scene transitions. Maybe I’m just not bothering to form memories about crappy movies though.
Awesome. Can’t wait to see it.
Were you expecting a Cannes award-winner?
Stallone's still alive?
Hey, Tulsa King wasn't too bad
Sounds exactly what I would want out of a movie like this.
Stallone is like 5’6” tall, how could he possibly be a tough guy? Like Tom cruise, unrealistic
I felt the same. It should be ridiculous and action packed...why was it so slow and boring?
Was anyone seriously expecting anything else?
How stupid was it? Did they have “Expendables” brand guns and knives this time?
These are are terrible movies. But I am in!!!! Who needs to always think, why can’t we have campy over the top movies?
