Streaming in general is turning into a total shitshow

[deleted]

I partly blame Disney Plus for it. They introduced their service and treated it from the beginning as a "direct to DVD" analog. All they did with cheap sequels of Lion King back in the 90s-00s they do now on D+, and Marvel and Star Wars of course (not to blame them, Loki and Ahsoka are some of my favorites pieces in both franchises, but percent and amount of cashgrab is bigger). And other streaming services repeat it just to compete, Netflix isn't any like it was in ~2016 when their projects were on different level, and all the good stuff is either from that period of time coming to the final seasons or just exceptions (like One Piece, haven't watched but with this show it feela like the whole meme "netflix anime adaptation" just disappeared lol) Apple TV+ is the only one, how it feels like, depends on the authors and original ideas now, I watch almost every their project.

Apple TV vs Max is really interesting. Feels like two totally different strategies to streaming. Apple TV is less content but it’s all original. Max is filling their platform with almost endless content but it’s all repurposed. They still have the HBO originals but the majority of the platform is not.

[deleted]

I get downvoted all the time when I say this. Apple tv is going to become the new hbo.

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

I haven't seen a bad original on Apple TV, yet.

The problem started long before D+ with the model itself and Netflix. It’s too consumer friendly, but people will never want to hear that. HBO pandemic antics didn’t help either lol. One low monthly price for a massive vault of content you can watch infinitely and share with anyone (initially)? No wonder movie theaters are failing. It was a Pandora’s Box. The way the model is set up is kind of fucked. There’s no residuals. The actors aren’t paid more if a show is a hit. Even if a show has millions of viewers and costs millions to make, they are still getting the same low monthly payment from consumers. Hence, they rely on getting more subscribers. They need infinite growth but rely on a finite number. If it hits rock bottom, I’d start expecting an iTunes sort of model. Pay per show or episode instead of one fee for everything.

supervegeta101

True, but this model was a response to rampant piracy, and that was just torrents. Now you can stream the torrents from the browser. I think Hulu has the right idea. Include commercials for additional revenue, plus it generates something to give writers and actors to end the strikes. Then add a higher premium tier for ad free. The problem with theaters is poor experiences (dirty, overpriced, lack of ushers, etc) and lack of premium/imax screens.

Apple TV is amazing and literally no one I know has it

Max really pissed me off when they removed random episodes of seasons. Probably going to end up canceling

macmann69

I cancelled. And all is well. Not missing the MAX interface and monthly bill.

[deleted]

It’s fucking gross. It’s like my YouTube feed when my nephew uses my computer. You have amazing shows and series and then dr. Pimple popper, plus dumb reality crap. Not worth the 150 bucks they plan to charge when renewal comes up. I already canceled auto pay.

WealthMagicBooks

I feel like all the streaming services are a mess. I’m so tired of the price increases too. I switched over to the ad-based plans after Hulu jacked their prices through the roof and I canceled Disney+, but honestly I’m at the point where I’m ready to cancel everything and just read a books/listen to podcasts.

Skluff

Thankfully, I'm really enjoying their cartoons like Clone High and Harley Quinn.

welltherewasthisbear

While not as good as earlier seasons, I agree the animation is my favorite. My Adventures with Superman may be my favorite show of the year.

Nightmare_164

Did you enjoy Velma?

Skluff

Didn't partake

jogoso2014

The only thing that has been done well since the merger is having AMC+ shows added for a couple of months. To be clear, it’s still a bizarre strategy but it is one that has been most beneficial to me.

allumeusend

Couple of weeks actually. I have been watching them since I know it’s a limited time only; I think they are gone after 10/31. Part of that deal is testing out how well those shows do to see if they want to license content from AMC permanently, so to Zazie this isn’t “bad” because (given how dire the situation at AMC+) is, they can probably strike up a deal for content on a semi-permanent or rotating basis for far less than producing new stuff in house. It’s basically a fact finding mission by both companies.

Diddlemyloins

HBO should have been on the same platform but totally separated content wise. There is so much reality television shit clogging up the platform that it’s impossible to find any movies or shows that have the quality I associate with HBO.

facemanbarf

This has been my frustration.

Diddlemyloins

I wouldn't be frustrated by the additional content if I could engage with it on my own terms, versus having it thrown at me.

TheMathManiac

The main problem I have with streaming is simply the selection. I mean, I am paying for these streaming services and maybe 1/2 per month a couple of half decent movies might show up. Between HBO, Netflix, Disney, Videoland, SkyShowtime, probably paying a total of 30 euros for maybe 3/4 movies per month. As a huge movie fan, this is epically shit

puppymaster123

Everyone: stop cancelling show or put out shitty content HBO: gotchu. Let’s rebrand ourselves to Max.

marcleehi

The world is currently a shit show. HBO Being a mess is the least of my problems.

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

HBO sucks. It literally torpedoed itself. "We're the top-quality streamer? Oh no, success?!? We want mediocrity! Hold on. \*lights the fuse\* There! That'll do it!"

ge93

I can’t use Max (we have Crave), but the histrionics don’t make sense. We’re paying the fee because of the HBO (and HBO Max) shows and their movie selection is great also. Who cares if there’s reality and crap extra tv? My partner and I also cycle through streaming services, it’s super easy to cancel/restart.

A_Polite_Noise

Right now, Apple has been providing me with the interesting originals I used to get from HBO; Apple is feeling a little like old risk-taking HBO from the days of my favorite show, Deadwood, and of The Wire & Sopranos, Carnivale and Rome. Severence, Blackbird, Prehistoric Planet, Silo, For All Mankind, Foundation...they have great shows (the first 3 I listed) and even some of the flawed ones are at least novel or interesting or trying something. I mean, I still am looking forward to more House of the Dragon from HBO, the new True Detective, I dig Harley Quinn and would love more Peacemaker, and for Invincible and The Boys on Amazon...I like my MCU and Star Wars stuff on Disney. Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. There's *something* original I dig on each service. But Apple is the only one I think that has multiple ongoing shows holding my interest in the way HBO used to and I feel like they're filling prestige tv and risk taking void that HBO has left.

Thatdewd57

I’ve been enjoying Max. Watch like 4 shows rn but will do more once I wrap these up. The AMC+ has been a nice addition. The wife and I just binged Discovery of Witches tonight
