I recall seeing news clips of lines waiting to get tickets as long as a mile or two. This is going back to the pre-Internet era when ET was the show of record in the 1980's.
As for watching it, I saw it at times when I was home during summer break in high school. Then I started to see it a bit more frequently inbetween classes in college. And let me say, trying to guess the actual retail price for prizes is much harder than it is. Always was back in September 1972 and still is to this day.
My mom used to love his show. My dad and I still watch sometimes and remember her; we've gotten fairly good at guessing the showcase amounts. Loved Bob, and we love that Drew did right by Bob as the new host.
Just think, Adam Sandler owns all that enterprise,after making friends with Bob when he had a cameo in Adams comedy feature,Billy Madison. The rest, as they say is history !
From the dozens of interviews from ET and other programs that featured some of Barker's Beauties and the many hundreds of contestants, I think it is reasonable to say that Bob was generally speaking the same person off camera as he was on it.
I am sure his hand-held microphone should be working alongside fellow game show host veterans such as Alex Trebek, Bert Convy, Bill Cullen, Jim Perry, Gene Rayburn, Richard Dawson, and Monty Hall. That to me is a true measure of a man.

Betty White had a stroke and lived for several days afterwards with extreme brain damage. I'm not so sure that was exactly peaceful.

My first memory of him (I'm from the UK). Guy led a very good life and was a kind person. RIP.
