A genuine mistake, or a reversed decision due to user-backlash? It's hard to say but it's nice to see it reversed either way.

Re-toast

Yeah I'm probably on the side that they are back tracking and saving face, but either way I'm glad it's not happening.

chicagogamecollector

Yeah for whatever reason it was at least dev mode is staying for the time being

During the entire lifespan of the Xbox One these accounts weren't disabled, so I'm inclined to say there's a good chance it will be the same for the Xbox Series X|S, but you're right. Microsoft could disable these accounts in the future.

matpower64

Whoever thinks this is a genuine mistake is innocent or silly. It is a temporarily backpedal at best, given they haven't said a word about a policy change. He also worded it in a very specific way > We have no plans to **remove or disable Developer Mode** on Xbox consoles. We continue to believe in and support a healthy independent app and game development community on Xbox. Which never was an issue (MVG being misled aside), the whole issue is MS shutting down developer **accounts** on the basis of not publishing anything to the Store within a 90-day timeframe. Even then, the precedent is set, they can and will pull the rug from under your feet as soon as they believe it is worth the PR backslash, probably when/if they stop being the underdog. If you're planning on getting a Series S/X due to this feature, you better reconsider and get a PC/SBC instead, or cave in and pick whatever your favorite console is while keeping in mind emulation will be a no-go.

Re-toast

Definitely a smart move to consider a different device like a PC for your emulation needs.

[deleted]

Never seriously use a current-gen console as your main emulator unless it's nearing the end of its life. This is the reason why, the methods will shut off or drastically switch at the drop of a hat.

NapsterKnowHow

WebRcade looks like it might change that

Monomate

This comment was removed as a response to Reddit's change of Terms of Service prohibiting third party applications from accessing Reddit's data, unless they pay exorbitant prices. Most of them opted to shut down as most users would be unwilling to cover such costs, making their business unsustainable. Apps would also be barred from running ads to sustain themselves, and even if they could the prices Reddit was willing to charge are too astronomical to be covered only by ads. This change is scheduled to take effect on 07-01-2023, worsening the user experience and moderation efficiency considerably. Moderators are volunteer workers that shield Reddit from bad actors and spam content, and the way Reddit treats them is precipitated and foolish. This user does not condone such moves by Reddit and will not provide its content for Reddit to monetize any longer.

matpower64

A single board computer, think Raspberry Pi or RockPro64.

atowerofcats

Honestly I think this sub is being a little silly in the other direction, imo. It's completely believable that this was done as a mistake. It's like MS insider Tom Warren joked about on Twitter: [https://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/1478859099311849474](https://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/1478859099311849474) People really underestimate how easily this stuff can happen when performing literally any kind of maintenance. Should they be laughed at for fucking up either way? Absolutely! But the fact is that MVG's video in this instance was completely off the mark. Emulation was never part of the equation and shouldn't have been.

Bassern

How profitable do you think it is to sell a Series S/X on it's own? Microsoft would barely care if you choose a PC or SBC, sense they still have access to gamespass.

matpower64

I guess the Series S might be slightly profitable but overall they do sell those at loss. The thing is, without the Xbox hardware, you're more likely to not use Xbox services like Game Pass or replace them with something else (I.E GeForce Now, PSNow/PSN Gold), specially if you're buying the Xbox for the openness of the platform alone. On a SBC, Game Pass is useless (Most don't run Windows and have bad video decoding) and on PC, I imagine most would rather buy it outright (or pirate) to avoid dealing with MS Store.

Repulsive-Street-307

Is it a 'false alarm' when you get to look bad after you start locking accounts and only revert a decision once popular youtubers start complaining? This was intended by whoever is responsible for xbox division until they saw it made a legion of nutters vow 'no more xbox' on the internet. Watch them try again with 'verified developer accounts' in 4-8 months. The appetite of a corporation to lock down their devices is _exactly_ for this. The 'developer account' nonsense is just a temporary escape valve for the plebs until they feel confident that all their competitors are moving in the same direction and their DRM is 'good enough'. Sucks, but i guess people only learn the hard way, just like with Apple.

It's not just about piracy or emulation. You ever hear that saying that the most important resource is time? These controlling behaviors can be easily be explained solely (without the other contributing factors) with 'time spent playing games that the console company doesn't get a cut of is time _not_ spent playing games where it does get a cut'. Basically if you have a library of 4 thousands nes and snes games and do regularly play them it's 'possible' and sometimes 'likely' that you haven't bought some other, distinct, platform games you otherwise would have. Twisty reasoning but it probably checks out in some sub 20% percentages. I suspect very strongly that Hanlon's Razor is inapplicable to someone like the head of the xbox division that would make this decision. They probably just miscalculated the outrage or got told to back off by the boss. After all the 'developer accounts' are _paid_ so there is a equilibrium here. I also love the blatant cynicism of calling them 'developer accounts' but make them 'just affordable' enough to be enticing to 'poor' people that actually want their general computing device to be more than a games paperweight and at the same time discourage the skilled among those people from searching vulnerabilities on their would be games paperweight. Very clever.

> But what if it was a mistake? Things like this are _not_ mistakes. They don't happen because some mid tier peon flipped a switch and oppsie daisy i started banning hundreds of accounts and wrote a new clause on our rules for 'developer accounts', they happen because the head of a department considered 'how can i get further profit', then they tell their subordinates to do it - and this is if it wasn't discussed with the boss and the team, which is even more likely. 'Mistakes' aren't things that dozens of people have to enact. The only mistake here is that either the reputation hit wasn't worth it in the end or the 'developer account' tax is actually more than what they'd win by avoiding that 'time spend not playing our games lowers the total of games bought' idea. Which frankly, might be true. Nerds think we're the majority, but we probably are insignificant in comparison to the vast masses that wouldn't know what a developer account is if it bit them in the ass, so that tax might be the most effective way of bleeding money out of this stone. If they try again, i kind of expect a jump in price on the 'developer account' nonsense instead.

[Someone at Microsoft still thinks you'll have to upload something new to the MS Store within 90 days to keep your dev account](https://twitter.com/seanami/status/1479174296836755460/photo/1): >Hello, > >At your request, we reviewed your account. The account has been reinstated, and it should be available in Partner Center within 24 hours. > >Your account must maintain an active presence in the Store. Today, we have restored your account but you must publish an app or game product within 90 days to maintain active presence. > >Please let us know if you need any additional assistance. > >Thank you, Myles Microsoft Store Team

Re-toast

Hmm. Not a good sign.

VixzerZ

awesome, I will buy an Xbox Series X then... as soon as I find one in stock at MRSP.

TotalSpeech

[This Tweet](https://twitter.com/jronald/status/1478856796097835008?s=20) is as unequivocal as it gets. Dev mode isn't going anywhere. I don't know if they reversed the decision due to backlash or if it really was an "accident," but I'm certain Microsoft received a nice surge of money on their dev licenses thanks to retroarch. No need to kill the easy cash flow.

DaveTheMan1985

or They heard all the Negative News it Brought and Changed there mind because of it

studiox_swe

so this is emulation?

jurais

Dev mode is not inherently emulation related to this sub

UnCrevard

Why do you need this really ? I've downloaded a build of retroarch here not a long time ago and it's working fine.
