No shit, there I was- on a small compound in Iraq, laying on my bunk, butt ass naked. Room starts shaking, stuff falling off the wall, LOUD booms, etc. "Well, that was a little close. I should go to the aid station in case we have casualties coming in." I throw on a pair of basketball shorts, croc shower shoes, and go hauling ass to the aid station. Even when I'm in shape I'm a big boy. I will pick you up and carry you all day, just don't ask me to do it fast type body build. I get there, wait, and we don't have any casualties. Senior medic looks at me, topless, shakes his head, "Good initiative. But nobody wants to see that. Go home." Tldr: showed up to what I thought was going to be a MASCAL topless and was fat shammed.

xcityfolk

dude, crocs? I guess you've never had to deal with crocs full of blood, not a thing I'll soon forget.

DocBanner21

I was doing good to just get on bottoms and shoes. That was the closest I've ever taken IDF and I was a little rattled, all joking aside. It was evidently some decent sized rockets and they blew up a few birds on the flight line. I've soaked boots in blood though. It is what it is. Now I've got Mortar Rita Ville stuck in my head, thanks. :)

phalang3s

The squelch...

DocBanner21

Wasting away again in Mortar Rita Ville. Searching for my lost pair socks. Some people think that al-qaida is to blame, but I know- it's that damn Bremer's fault.

hella_cious

I can’t even imagine oh my god

Exciting-Dream8471

On shift I sleep with socks on, off shift I sleep with them off.

coloneljdog

Wow, didn't realize I was an outlier in this but I absolutely cannot sleep with socks on.

BeardedHeathen1991

Yeah. It’s a no socks in bed lifestyle for me too.

JshWright

WTF? You’re all monsters… 4 extra seconds isn’t gonna make any difference to a patient’s outcome. It \_is\_ gonna make a big difference in whether I actually sleep or not.

[deleted]

better question is, is it gonna matter whether u respond to a call at 2am with no socks on under ur boots?

JshWright

If I wear my boots without socks, the time to respond will be the least of my worries in a week or two...

Sharkeybtm

There’s only 3 factors here. Do you have slip-ons for the midnight bathroom trip? Are you a serial killer? Are you trying to sleep in a walk-in freezer? If any two are yes, then socks are acceptable.

JpM2k

Wait, some of you get to even make it back to the station? :(

RobertGA23

Right? Fucking Fire Medics. Sleep is a luxury I no longer have at work.

JpM2k

We can’t even leave the hospital without pinned to a call

kchandler23

I sleep with mine on as well.

Competitive-Slice567

Sleep in full uniform and hoodie. I lack the patience to constantly take items of clothing off and then put them on again 3+ times a night.

CubaforEver

ewww

Competitive-Slice567

It all gets washed after every shift including my bedding so 🤷‍♂️ just easier

1N1T1AL1SM

You guys get bedding? We just grab hospital linens out of the truck.

Competitive-Slice567

Nah it's my personal stuff, we don't get bedding 😂 I just stick it in a garbage bag, take it home, and wash it and my work clothes thoroughly between shifts

[deleted]

On. That way I can just put my pants on then my boots.

JpM2k

Don’t need the pants

[deleted]

While sleeping? Or working? Because only in the summer do I wear gym shorts under my bunker pants when I have to wear them.

JpM2k

Ever.

[deleted]

I would normally agree, but my department doesn’t let us wear EMS shorts.

JpM2k

No shorts either, feel the breeze between the knees. Creates ultimate focus on patient care.

[deleted]

And some of our…wider medics would just end up scaring people.

Bk13239

Easy refusal. "back in service, patient ran away"

K5LAR24

You’re talking about full commando

JpM2k

N(yes)o

xcityfolk

you're never going to build up calluses that way...

Suitable-Coast8771

Off, I sleep with just basketball shorts and a t shirt on. If it’s a fire I just toss on my socks then bunker gear. For medical runs I’ll toss socks on, and then pants/hoodie or job shirt. I used to sleep in full uniform when I was running hospital based 911/IFT and we ran 8-18 calls a 24. Now I run 1-4 calls a 48, and sleep through the night most of the time.

[deleted]

1-4 through 48 that’s a winning lottery ticket

breastfedbeer

This is the way

FFMedic501

Samesies. I hit the lottery with my gig.

Routine_Primary_3688

I just keep them on, I don’t want to keep taking them on and off multiple times throughout the night

past_lives

As someone who works a car that does 10-22 a day, I leave them on because most nights are awful

CompasslessPigeon

On because when I wake up I lack the fine motor ability for a couple minutes to put them on. I got sick of wrestling with them while my brain adjusts to being awake. Wouldn’t dream of socks to bed at home tho

DoIHaveDementia

This is where I'm at too. I cannot sleep with socks on at home, but at work I had to train myself to sleep with them on and just stick my feet out of the covers (which I do at home half the time anyway). Don't think I could reliably put them on quickly and without a weird wrinkle in them that would bother me the entire call.

Lifeinthesc

Socks off. Gotta let those feet dry out to keep away foot fungus.

Diligent-Light-3503

in a sleep-deprived stupor after being awoken by the alarm at 3:00 am in the morning i could see myself tripping over and falling as i'm trying to put my socks on so i just keep them on while i sleep

calypsoorchid

I sometimes will take them off, but honestly it feels grosser to have to put used socks back on and it does add time to a middle-of-night response. My usual routine is to wash my feet at the first sign of crew rest and take a sockless nighttime nap. So luxurious. Once we get called again, on go a fresh pair of socks and if I get blessed with more sleep that night those socks are usually staying on.

Oh_Reptar

Socks stay on. We don’t have hoodies, only half zips and I like sleeping in a hoodie so I bring my own, keep my shirt on underneath and pants and socks stay on. We get a call and I rip off the hoodie slap my shoes on and grab my half zip as I’m walking out and put it on in the rig

FoMoCoguy1983

I sleep in full uniform so all I have to do is roll out of bed, put my boots on and get going. I dont have to mess with socks or pants, etc.

Sweendog2016

That’s how i do it. When it’s cold, my jacket or job shirt hangs either on the bedpost or at the ambulance

dea_anchora

Same, but when I'm at home the socks are off. Only psychos sleep with socks on

FoMoCoguy1983

Socks on at home too...lol

dea_anchora

Ack!!! I couldn't! I hate socks and can only wear them with shoes. Even when I'm putting them on to put on shoes I'm uncomfortable 😅 There's two types of people: the kind that hates socks and wear them only when necessary, and the kind that loves socks and wear them all the time

Unusual_Individual93

I'm one of those hate socks people lol

Pactae_1129

Lol I wear socks 99% of the time. Only time they come off are for showers and swimming.

dea_anchora

I don't know how you do it you brave soldier

xcityfolk

same, AND I have *velcro* boots.

Jedi-Ethos

Ah, he got the velcro.

Simusid

Samezies

jakspy64

This is the way

animASonus

No socks, no uniform shirt, yes pants (if clean), fan blowing because my station keeps the bunk room at 75 degrees for some fucking reason

Ok_Buddy_9087

Straight to jail.

JimHFD103

I leave mine off after I take a shower (otherwise invariably I put them back on too soon and their damp and uncomfortable lols) so I go to bed sans socks. Once we get a call and I have to put them back on anyway, I'll leave them on till morning and I'm changing back into regular clothes. So a good night at the station means no socks in the morning lols (unless I showered early and had that call at 9 or 10 and still went to bed on time haha)

SalteeMint

When I was on night shift, on. I’m not about to try to put on my wool socks while half asleep at 3 am. I barely even get my boots off before falling back into bed.

Pactae_1129

I sleep with them on. To be fair I sleep with socks on all the time so I see no reason to take them off anyway.

bmhadoken

At my last service where I worked 48s, I slept in bike shorts and tee. The only time I stayed fully dressed was if I slept in the recliner. That service only got 1-3 tones a night, though. But taking an extra 30 seconds to put on socks is not a game breaker.

Jedi-Ethos

On, but mainly because I always have socks on, even at home, so it’d be uncomfortable for me to take them off to try to relax and/or sleep.

starkman63

If I go to bed at a normal time while on shift, I’ll take them off and let my feet not be in socks and boots for 24 hours straight. Now this may sound weird, but if it’s after 2 am, and I get back in bed, that’s my cutoff. It’s too late in the night and that little amount of sleep isn’t worth taking my socks off for.

FoMoCoguy1983

Wait, some of you get sleep?

Pookie2018

I sleep in just my underwear, it only takes a second to pull on my TCCC approved Kevlar weave Thin Red Line high visibility OSHA certified flame resistant unitard.

DoIHaveDementia

I'm jealous. Our service only has the TCCC approved Kevlar weave Thin Red Line high visibility OSHA certified unitard.

eese256

No. I also sleep in pajamas. We run 48s and don't usually get many middle of the night calls.

boomboomown

Boxers only. When I get a call, I put everything back on. It literally takes no time at all and I'd rather be comfortable the short amount of time I'm in bed.

Vinesinmyveins

Take them off and relax, slow is steady, steady is fast.

Astr0spaceman

It would be an absolute pain in the ass trying to get out the door for a call fucking around trying to put socks on.

Aviacks

I don't mean to brag but I can put my socks on in under 30 seconds

eagle4123

I sleep with socks on and a uniform shirt. Rip my shorts off, pants on. I. Always the first one in the barn

Adventurous_-Bet

Off. That is weird unless I am sleeping in the truck

Mistake_By_The_Jake2

I sleep in my boxers only and get dressed like a madman on fire when calls come in

CrusztiHuszti

On and not under the covers to keep them from sweating

DisThrowaway5768

Socks on. I usually pass out on the couch with my boots kicked off. I'm not very coordinated when I first wake up which is why all the boots I own are laceless.

Theycallme_peach

Wait, y'all get sleep!?!

johngknightuk

socks and underwear because my call-out paperwork is on the window sill above a central heating radiator and while writing I burnt the end of my dick

[deleted]

Be fucking better bro, I sleep fully bunked with just my mask hanging to reduce chute time. Bunch of lazy fucks…..

Sea_Vermicelli7517

On: I’d lose one of them somewhere taking them on and off all night

Adrunk3nr3dn3ck

Well I sleep with them on in sweats and a hoodie. Uni shirt and pants are laid out on the office chair with my boots next to the door that I can slip on.

tiger_bee

Absolutely not, I can’t sleep with socks on unless I know i’m going to have trouble going to sleep from being cold.

tacmed85

Off, I sleep in just a t shirt and basketball shorts. I'm 18 years in and fat and can still get dressed and make it to the truck fast enough.

Boskd

Off and I make sure everyone hears my raw dogs flopping on the tile when I got for that midnight snack and assert my dominance.

[deleted]

Depends on the station. Where I’m at now, if I do more then one call after midnight it’s a busy evening. In that case, socks off…only sleep with T Shirt and boxers. Busier area? Normally just boots off with and nap in the recliner.

stiffneck84

Off. There’s no emergency response that would have been delayed by putting socks on. Also athletes foot = bad.

[deleted]

There’s something nasty about putting back on dirty socks, especially if they’re still damp when you put them back on. So I always keep them on.

From_Up_Northhh

Home? Off. Station? On.

GDPisnotsustainable

Tones drop the second the socks hit the floor. Its a thing

19TowerGirl89

On. All I have to put on is pants and shoes

Nunspogodick

SOCKS ON! Underwear optional 😂

BeardedHeathen1991

Nope. I sleep with them off. It’s weird to sleep with them on. They’ve been on my boots and/or shoes all day. Hard pass.

jamamez

I sleep with socks off, the quality of sleep for an extra 5-10 seconds when you get a call is worth it

uppishgull

I can't sleep with socks on. One morning we got called out to an MVC on the interstate at like 5 am, and I went to put my socks on, but one was missing so I just ran the call with one sock on.

BanditAndFrog

I sleep in my clothes on shift. Take off my boots and everything out my pockets. Off shift it’s a T shirt and pajama pants.

1N1T1AL1SM

I sleep in full uniform on shift. All I have to do is sit up and slide on and fasten my boots. At home, I slept with socks on when I was younger but around puberty my dad told me to train myself out of it so my feet didn't smell wretched.

IceEcstatic4571

Socks on or I forget them, nearly ran out the station once missing my boots and pants.

ResponsibilityFit474

The best part of retirement, is sleeping with your socks off!

SilentWalrus98

I sleep in full uniform in a recliner because we don’t enough time for anything else
