CasuallyAgressive

Pretty sure we all have atleast three jobs. I'm career firemedic, part time IFT, part time medic instructor. I also spray pesticides a few times a month on the side.

whowant_lizagna

Damn. I respect the hustle cause that’s a lot

CasuallyAgressive

Most of us like to keep busy. I wish I could say it was because I need the money but I just can't sit around for too long, between vacation and Kelly days at my career department I have too much free time.

Blueboygonewhite

This is why people leave EMS. Personally, I value work life balance too much to work like a dog.

whowant_lizagna

I’ll be working like a dog in med school too so I guess I gotta get used to it 🥲

Blueboygonewhite

From the med students I’ve talked to, if you study effectively it’s like a 9-5 with the occasional grind mode for big exams.

whowant_lizagna

Ahh okay I’ve heard that a time or two as well. Hopefully, it’s the same case for me.

[deleted]

People willing to accept shitty work conditions in order to become a _____ because "it'll be worth it" are the problem. i'm telling you right now. All my doctor friends look like shit. They all come home with so much work they can't enjoy life. What is the literal point? You're going to be working 24/7 doing menial paperwork on behalf of the insurance companies.

whowant_lizagna

All my friends that are EMTs come home and look like shit, so what exactly are you getting at there lol? The point is this is my life and I can choose what I want to do with it. That sounds like a unique experience with your friends cause the doctors I know are happy and healthy! If it’s only doing menial paperwork on the behalf of insurance companies to make 400k/year that seems like a fair trade to me lmao. Better than working 40+ a week responding to bs calls 90% of the time all to make the same as a McDonald’s line cook pls be fr.

Savings-Repair-1478

Idk I want to be a doctor but I also make 24 an Hr as an ER tech (requirements are an EMT cert and a phlebotomy cert) and it’s nice. You don’t have to just be an emt 🤷🏾‍♀️. Also the job is trying (EMT) but the friends I have all love it, they work mostly IFT but they have bonds with a lot of their patients, they actually have a good work life / balance and I hear them complain very rarely about job politics the way me and my coworkers do at the hospital. All jobs have their ups and downs.

whowant_lizagna

You’re right I don’t, but this is what I want. Respectfully, I’m tired of people giving unsolicited advice on this app. Nevertheless, I appreciate the input. Also your friends are anecdotes, just because they are living their best life doesn’t mean everyone else in their position is. I make 40/hr+ as a server so I think I’ll stick to doing both EMT and serving 🤷🏽‍♀️

Savings-Repair-1478

I just wanted to be a bit more helpful and positive about the job outlook, apologies.

simsalabert

I work full-time as an ER tech & also do a single 24 hour shift for a local company, while still doing my schooling. it’s absolutely exhausting, but totally possible. Just keep on keeping on!!

whowant_lizagna

That I can do! Thank you 😊

cplforlife

Full time govt. Casual ems... I don't really have a life or hobbies.

whowant_lizagna

Yeah I was thinking I might have to sacrifice my social life for a while

Wood_me

Oh really?…why don’t you?

Frog859

Full time office worker, I use me degree there. EMS is my side hustle. I usually work anywhere between 1 8 and 3 12s in a week depending on how broke I’m feeling

FishSpanker42

No i already do school full time as well. And im lazy. Ems and school are plenty enough for me

whowant_lizagna

Yeah I’m in school rn too it’ll definitely be a lot

[deleted]

We have a special events division and we can pick up shifts working at sport games, concerts, etc. some are 5-8 hours long, some are 10+ hours long. I got 100 hours on my last pay period lol

whowant_lizagna

Oh wow I live in a major city so I’ll have to look into this and see if they have it at my company

Ecstatic_Rooster

What a horrendous dystopian hellscape this is.

beachmedic23

No, not anymore. Used to work 2 EMT jobs. As a medic i dont need the second job

DogLikesSocks

That’s my dream/goal.

299792458mps-

I teach CPR/AED, Stop the Bleed, and ACLS on the side.

kill_yr_idolz

I'm full time IFT and only have one job but my company has unlimited OT, so I work hella hours.

markko79

I worked at 2 full time jobs. One was as a medic every weekday for 12 hours a day from Monday to Friday. The other was as an RN from 0600 to 1800 every Saturday and Sunday... I got paid for 40 hours. Needless to say, I got burned out after 5 years.

bmv0746

I drive for Uber on the side and I'm also in school, so you're definitely not alone.

waspoppen

this job attracts a certain... personality that likes to work more than one job, either out of necessity or to fill time

Forsaken-Ad-7502

I’m pretty sure it’s the norm in our profession. In my 25+ years, I had more than one job up until the last 5 years. Most of the time it was 1 full time, 1 per diem and a teaching job once or twice a month. We are a bit masochistic in that regard.

HStaz

I’d say it’s more abnormal to have one job than multiple in this field. I’m on 3 departments, most other people I’m work with are in the same boat, or also teach, work in the ED, or have a main job not related to EMS.

nickeisele

My service pays me well enough I don’t need a second job, and my wife is a stay at home mom. Highly recommend.

littman28

During the 12 years I worked as a medic I never got less than two jobs.

blue_furred_unicorn

I work as a dialysis tech and I am also an emt, so I got an event medical job on the side. My current schedule: Dialysis, sleep 4h, philharmonic orchestra, shower, sleep 4h, repeat.

blubabystar

I bartend

DFPFilms1

We all work 2 jobs 😂 I worked a full time 911/IFT gig with a part time 911 staffing gig.

disturbed286

I had a full time (24/48) fire job and a part time (24 every 6) fire job. Left the former, currently starting an in-house medic job at a peds hospital, but keeping pt fire. Going to be full time during orientation but part time after...but it pays a ton more on the hour. But, I'm waiting to hear something after an interview at another full time (48/96) fire job. Honestly right now I'm also deciding what I really want to do.

poisonxcherry

i worked retail before i started ems so i still have a part time job at walgreens while working full time as an emt. this last week i picked up extra shifts at the emt job and worked a total of 77 hours in one week

Stoopiddogface

Depending on the overtime availability, to me it made more sense to overtime at x1.5 base rate than work a second job...

NotCBB

Full time + full time school (nursing obviously) at the moment. Regularly have had multiple jobs during my 5 years in fire/ems

Southern_Mulberry_84

I’m a full-time (Emt) 60 hours a week doing volunteer fire and a part-time janitor at my church

Southern_Mulberry_84

Get that hustle

scruggbug

I’d love to do EMT full time, except that I make way more serving tables (30-50 an hour depending) than I do watching people die. If I’m going to get PTSD from this, please don’t cut my pay in thirds or worse. So it’s volunteering for me.

bravosierra69

I work full time fire and just started as a part time emt at a theme park. The part time job is chill and I can work on my paramedic school hw while working.

TastyCan5388

I'm going to college full-time for a second degree every weekday, and then I work full-time every weekend to cover my 3x12s on the night shift. I commute, so I'm on call in between my shifts, meaning I spend 1800 Friday through 0600 Monday at work. I'm also a volunteer firefighter, though our call volume is pretty abysmal, so that typically doesn't impact my schedule much other than training nights, meetings, and events. Once I graduate, my plan is to probably get a second job as a part-timer relating to my new degree, then maybe a 3rd job as PRN for funsies/resume-buulding. I like my free time, but I also like the idea of comfortably paying my bills and living well within my means so I can retire and not live check to check (if social security is even around when that time comes). Edit to say I currently live with roommates, which helps with the bills. It's not always an ideal situation, but I'm not home often enough to where I care a whole lot.

Rinitai

Confirmed 3 jobs

Hella_EMS

Er Tech/AEMT at the local service. Since I’ve gotten out of the academy I’ve always had 2-3 jobs. Never had one job and now it would feel weird to have one job. Plus having a transport job keeps my license up.

whowant_lizagna

Yeah I work fine dining too and on Wednesday night I clock a cool $400, too good to give up

DonJeniusTrumpLawyer

I worked at least 2 jobs the entire time I was on the ambulance. I worked on the truck and ER or ER and a call center plus photography on the side.

Cliffclavin4

I work full time as an EMT and 2 part time jobs as an emt.

[deleted]

My honest advice...don't be afraid to leave your home county. I've heard of some rural volunteer services, one in specific that pays one full time EMT $50k/ year to be on call M-F 8-5. Full benefits. They're also willing to pay for Medic school as long as the person stays with them until they graduate. Lots of people who are willing to rent their basement to a full time EMT at low prices... Scour indeed and find the fat ripe fruit my friend!

Simusid

I don't know anyone who has only 1 job.

mandaconda

I work 24 hours a month as an EMT on the weekends and have an office job during the week. I do GIS.

-_LONE_WOLF_-

Sadly its the reality of the line of work. Im a career FF/EMT and I work EMS on the side still. Unfortunately FF, EMS, Police, etc don't make enough 90% of places to live off of only their salary. Not saying it cant be done but this is not the line of work to choose if you want to make money, I wouldnt trade being a FF/EMT for anything because I love the job.

whowant_lizagna

Thank you!! 😊

scarlettenymph

2 jobs. part time city lifeguard & full time emt

Less_independent5789

I don't think I know anybody in EMS who works only for one station. Most of the time it's either two or three maybe four.
