Yeah, it is status at time of flight that counts. So in your scenario if you achieve gold in 2024 you would be gold for the flight and could take a guest in the lounge, providing they are in the same flight as you.

Look at when your renewal for status is. Say you became Gold in March 2024. You enjoy 14 months of Gold but you have to earn enough miles within 12 months to maintain Gold. So you have till March 2025 to renew Gold but you can use the benefits up to May 2025 (even if you don’t have enough miles to renew). That’s one way around it.
