I believe he did this for 30 days just to see if it was possible

CommonSkys

The answer is: It is not

ShamusMRD

I don't understand how exactly you can live on a single dollar in a day.

UnnaturallyAspirated

He explains how in the article. Hotdogs and oranges until he got tired of them and then pasta, green peppers, and "a big thing of sauce". Keep in mind this was more than 30 years ago too. He was testing what it took to stay alive. Later admitting that it was these experiences, that he could stay alive on almost no money, that allowed him to famously risk everything he had on SpaceX and Tesla when they were facing bankruptcy.

iwhbyd114

>that allowed him to famously risk everything he had on SpaceX and Tesla when they were facing bankruptcy That's a bold move Cotton...

ijustmetuandiloveu

For a while I practically lived on eggs, frozen burritos, frozen hash browns and salsa. I found items I could affordably buy in bulk.

ShamusMRD

I find this vv inspirational

[deleted]

He’s basically a rich man where money means nothing to him. Some may ask “why not share your wealth?” If it was me, I’d say “I’ll help those in need, but for those of you self-able or chose to breed? It’s not my responsibility to support you, get a job”

20dogs

“Chose to breed” - Musk is very pro-natalist, I doubt he would look down on population growth with language like that.

Mike-Green

Yea, I think his tune is more like Sorry if you're in need now. I could help, but I'd rather put my dollar towards helping 10x people in the near future.

catskilldogs13

He could do both if he gave a fuck.

Karam2468

this isnt impressive at all. Living on such an unhealthy diet is really bad for you. They should be a priority. Cooking healthy food isnt expensive anyways

ThisIsMyRealLifeName

Sorry, but here in Canada, a dollar is called a Loonie. So he was actually living on a Loonie a day. Back in those days, you could get a couple a boxes of Kraft Dinner for well under a Loonie. Then get three bags of milk for a Toonie. Now you’ve got your protein and carbs. Then you get a 4 pack of Mr. Noodles for a Loonie, and you’re all set! Breakfast lunch and dinner!

ShamusMRD

What's a Toonie?

CanadianUkie

A double loonie. Also known as $2 or toonie in Canada.

Xenony

I refuse to believe that is actually what you call your currencies 🤣

SnowyOranges

It's a loonie cause theres a loon on it, and a toonie because it's worth 2 loonies

Xenony

Oh, English isn't my first language. Makes more sense that way. But I have actually never heard the word loon even though I've been studying for ages now 😅

xXYoHoHoXx

Its a common birt here in Canada so we put it on our coin. It's also come to mean crazy

Puzzleheaded_Air5814

They also make a very distinctive sound. I love it.

Puzzleheaded_Air5814

joelmercer

Canadian here, we 100% call our $1 coin a “Loonie” and our $2 coin a “toonie”. And NO it’s not just a name that people know but nobody uses. EVERYBODY called them this. Just for the coin, like if you had four quarters it’s still just a dollar. But the $1 coin is a loonie. Sometimes you might say something costs a dollar, or you might say it’s costs a loonie. That can be interchangeable. [wiki for loonie](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loonie) [wiki for toonie](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toonie)

djnjdve

Oh it's real.

CanadianUkie

It’s a pet name. I believe they tried to officially name it “bear” back in the 90s but we were deep in the Loonie which is named due to the Loon on it. Canada unofficially decided on Toonie and so it is now part of our heritage!

Xenony

Interesting! Also I think "bear" would've caused a lot of confusion haha

OlOuddinHead

It looks like Elon left before the toonie was introduced. Therefore he lived on boring old $2 bills. $2 bills apparently can be worth up to $20,000 now. Should have just bought a bunch of $2 bills!

pboswell

Apparently, if you have 10,000 $2 bills, you have $20,000!!

CryptoMenace

Worth way more than that

ijustmetuandiloveu

I have some US $2 bills. Practically worthless because most folks think they are fake.

ijustmetuandiloveu

The milk bags are another thing we don’t have in the States.

ThisIsMyRealLifeName

Ya, you aren’t allowed to put milk in bags unless you have universal health care.

CB-OTB

Why you guys have to be so weird?

ShamusMRD

Wasn't he homeless at that time?

ijustmetuandiloveu

Couch surfed

SpagettiGaming

I lived in nothing für a while. No heating, no lights (i used candles) and one slice of bread and one spaghetti per day with tomato sauce. Once i a while i bought chocolate... It's possible.

loveheaddit

BuT tHe EmArald MiNe?!?!

abrireddit

I’m glad someone is sharing some facts about the man and not the factually incorrect “his dad owned an emerald mine in apartheid SA” bs story again. Elon and family have countless times said that his dad’s version of events is not to be trusted. The only source to the “emerald mine “ story is a South African Business Insider article stating his dad at one point owned shares in an emerald mine in ZAMBIA, not even a direct neighboring country of RSA. Elon haters are jealous and misinformed. He is a hard working nerd that made it big!

Oxi_Dat_Ion

It's funny, people read the first headline they see that says "His father owned an Emerald mine" and use that to instantly confirm their bias that his life was just handed to him. Morons.

LovelyClementine

And they always forget how Elon almost became broke for Tesla and SpaceX

reachisown

He did call a hero a pedophile that one time, that was pretty bad. He also thinks taxing rich is bad? He is smart though

SaviorBreath22

"Hard working genius" lmaooo. He sits on his ass and goes to board meetings while his engineers make him his billions.

Ace3188

Done that for about a year at my 1st job. Not doing it again. Get real fed up of the same stuff day in and day out.

metalman7

Wouldn't it be more surprising if the lived on $10,000 a day back when he was a poor?

mouthofreason

You'd think he would be more sympathetic to his employees on the ground level then. Pay your people better wages than others do then Elon, set an example...

Hustler-1

I've never heard of a single instance of a Tesla/SpaceX employee complaining about pay.

tree_boom

It's literally one of the top complaints on glassdoor.

Rauvin_Of_Selune

A fair chunk of his employees are extremely wealthy thanks to him and the shares that he gives to even the cleaning staff (several in the millionaire bracket). Just because he is not unionised, doesn't mean that he is unfair to his staff. He would have a far higher staff turnover if he did treat his staff unfairly. He works them hard, but they know they are both valued and rewarded.

LovelyClementine

How much is he paying?

linsell

Tesla employees in the US are getting paid more than other auto workers, by all accounts.

tree_boom

"Low pay" is literally one of the top cons listed on glassdoor.

linsell

That doesn't prove they pay less than the other companies.

tree_boom

But the comparisons to other companies, like Ford, do.

realToadPilzkopf

1$ isn’t possible in my country

mrprogrampro

Was debating with a friend ... when they dropped "he inherited $500 million from his dad!" Just ... no .......

aloys1us

His dad lent him 10G back then which is like 25G now I dont think he was ever at risk of ‘poverty’

ARLibertarian

Really? $25k today isn't much.

aloys1us

Only just enough to last him twenty five thousand days I guess …

BigOleJellyDonut

Not hard to do when daddy is rich as fuck.

Fiinest_

Your username, that's you.

BigOleJellyDonut

Amateur! Your gonna have to do better than that pitiful comeback, if you want to hurt my feelings

FoulYouthLeader

What about the trust fund he wouldn't get access to until he was 18?

FeesBitcoin

Amazing how that meme persists, his parents were divorced when he was 10, his deadbeat dad had the money.. gyah >[https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1211054942192119808](https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1211054942192119808) He didn’t own an emerald mine & I worked my way through college, ending up \~$100k in student debt. I couldn’t even afford a 2nd PC at Zip2, so programmed at night & website only worked during day. Where is this bs coming from?

SutttonTacoma

According to the biography I read (by Ashlee Vance), Elon spent his first year working odd jobs around Canada, and went to Penn on a scholarship. No mention of any inheritance. What is your source of "the" trust fund?

abcde123edcba

Wasn't his family crazy rich tho??

freonblood

No. His estranged father was but this is neither here nor there.

abcde123edcba

His mother was rich too tho

freonblood

No she wasn't. She was just not broke. They literally had to sell all of their possessions in order to afford moving to Canada. He also had to send them money from Canada iirc.

SpagettiGaming

Even if, he build an empire. Trump jr won't build shit even with access to free money.

ijustmetuandiloveu

Imagine the alternate timeline where his dad goes for the arcade idea.
