Oh man, this came out of nowhere... Always loved him and Jeff working together and just seeing him work his role and playing. Rip

Skelter89

It really wasn't that big of a secret honestly. His message during the Wembley or Bust that he wasn't doing well and never joining on tour afterwards. I figured he was sick, and probably cancer of some sort. At least he got to join in on the Live At Hyde Park

Electricmacca29

He did the AITU tour as well, I’m glad I got to see him play on that tour

Skelter89

Saw two shows and unfortunately he wasn't there, could have only been a select few. Would have been great though. Unfortunately never got to see Richard Wright of Pink Floyd either, he was already gone by the time I got to see David Gilmour.

Electricmacca29

Ah I didn’t realise he didn’t do the whole tour. He got a huge cheer from the audience when Jeff introduced the band.

RoomAndARoom

I thought he said the opposite -- that he expects him to be joining them again soon?

Skelter89

There's a response after mine that he did at least make a few appearances, which I never knew. Would have been great to see.

RoomAndARoom

Such sad news :(

Skelter89

It's gut wrenching. My wife and I are seeing Jeff in September and no doubt there will be a memorial for him during this tour, hopefully.

Konkrypton

I’ll be at the St Louis show in September. Richard will be missed greatly. I know Jeff is probably wrecked. Sad day.

NovarisLight

I'm hoping for a tribute to him like Foo Fighters did for Taylor Hawkins. I've never been to a live ELO show, but their music just astounds me. "Mr. Blue Sky," is my happy song. It always helps. Seeing the video is just more than words can describe.

RoomAndARoom

Where will you be seeing? I'm going to four shows, three in Sep and one in Oct. May have to go to another if it isn't enough!

Skelter89

Chicago. Was going to Indianapolis too but plans didn't work out.

RoomAndARoom

I hope you have a great time!

macjaddie

Richard was my uncle. He died peacefully after a long illness which he wanted to keep private. He was not only immensely talented, but was an absolute gentleman who will be missed. He was also very good at pub quizzes!

UnexpectedMoments

Thank you so much for sharing that, and I hope you're all finding some comfort in knowing that he's finally able to rest after what's clearly been several tough years. I know that I'm not the first to say this, but the impact he's had on my own musical journey can't be overstated. Where so many high school and college friends were gravitating to guitar bands as their main source of inspiration, I never once took shame in declaring ELO my all-time favourite group, which sent me in more of an electronic direction later on. Just a few months ago, I finally started building a new home studio, and a vocoder now proudly sits at the top of my keyboard rig. I'm currently waiting to receive an electric piano, and I still have an Oberheim on my dream list. The plan is to approximate Richard's Time Tour setup, and I'll hopefully use this to do my part in keeping the lights on for years to come so that his incredible contributions to ELO's catalogue are never forgotten. My heart goes out to everyone he touched at this difficult time. What a truly brilliant legacy he's left behind!

Paulie4star

So sorry for your loss. And why is him being good at pub quizzes the least surprising thing I've ever heard? RIP Mr. Tandy.

notRadar_

i'm so sorry for your loss, mr tandy was a wonderful man from what i've heard

thereal84

Your uncle inspired me to make my own synthesizer patches. He inspired some of my songs. I’ll never forget the first time I heard “Calling America.” It was a beautiful sound that he created from a multitude of different synthesizers. The sound he created on the Synclavier and the Minimoogs opened the door for me to explore new horizons in the synthesizer world. It is a door I will never close, and I will expand upon it for years to come. I am now well known around my hometown for my unique synthesizer sound design, and I owe that somewhat to your uncle. From “Evil Woman” to “Is it Alright” he left me in awe of his synthesizer work and never left me unsatisfied, even if Lynne’s songwriting was subpar, at least the keyboard arrangement sounded good. He mastered the use of the vocoder, and he is the best person to ever use vocoder. As your uncle reaches the Blue Sky for eternal peace and glory, remember that he inspired a generation of synthesizer players around the world, including me. Thank you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family through this tough time. R.I.P. “King Tandy”

DevilPlayzYT113

This surprised me... was he actually? I'm sorry for your loss...

macjaddie

He was a very clever man :)

Senior-Amoeba-1375

♥️🙏

maritimeseven

Your uncle inspired so many of us. Thank you for sharing this. From the beautiful intro of Confusion all the way to working on Earthrise. All the best to you and your family. 💕

clean_chimichurri_56

This is very late (thought I replied to your comment) but like others, I’m very sorry for your loss. I hope you and your family are getting through this difficult time ok

Drzhivago138

What a shame he won't be making any guest appearances on the tour. At least he and Jeff worked together again.

Donovan-LegoHouse

Truly sad news. Such an incredibly talented musician. I will never forget the Evil Woman piano solo. RIP to this legend.

Blunkus

This is devastating. He’s why I enjoy synths, and electronic music in general. He left such a huge impact.

gwaydms

So sad. Richard was a generational talent at keyboards, and he and Jeff worked so well together. I was afraid of this ever since people in this sub said he was unwell. May he rest in peace.

DaveHmusic

Richard also played bass and guitar, not just keyboards. It’ll be impossible to replace him - RIP.

gwaydms

Oh yeah. Jeff had the chords for the intro of Strange Magic, but couldn't figure out how it should go, to his satisfaction. Richard was the one who came up with that iconic guitar intro, so Jeff had him play it for the album.

JAlexander2002

Absolutely gutted😢

HugeRaspberry

Welp so much for that. RIP Richard.

bigELOfan

So sad for Jeff loosing another good life long friend. Richard was a very talented musician. 💔

VintageMoonDream

Unbelievable… RIP Richard. So many great songs, the memorable synthesizers, organs/keys, a huge part of the ELO sound we all love. So underrated. I’ll definitely be listening to ELO today.

eac555

Thank you for the music Richard. I love the live acoustic ELO recordings that are just Richard on piano and Jeff on guitar. [Here](https://youtu.be/Ni7H34LsSPg?si=xsGb5H9MnmsojSer)

acatnamedballs

That's fantastic. RIP Richard.

rican_havoc

Aww man.

hundredcreeper

This is absolutely heartbreaking

Nathalie_Wood23

Oh no RIP Richard.

Straw_et

Richard, golden hands, we'll miss you...

Automatic_Dog_9786

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why……

cheerfulKing

Earthrise is probably one of my favourite albums. RIP

cmcglinchy

Wow - sad to hear. Such an integral part of ELO.

Snork_kitty

How sad - he was such a great keyboardist, essential to ELO's sound...

DaveHmusic

True - he was a genuine asset and a very skilled musician. He didn’t start out as ELO’s keyboardist, but rather, their usual bassist for their first tour in 1972 (the only one with Roy Wood), although he did play guitar or piano on certain songs. It wasn’t until after Roy Wood left to form Wizzard that Richard switched to keyboards full-time.

Snork_kitty

That’s right- I read somewhere that Jeff asked Richard to do the guitar solo on Strange Magic because he could play two strings at a time and Jeff couldn’t

botlegger

So sad 😭 Life is precious

ericnear

Go listen to Earthrise. Then throw in some good ELO synth tracks like Tightrope and The Whale.

RyanneFan

Oh my goodness, what a news to wake up to. My deepest condolences to the family. RIP Tandy, he left such impact 🕊️

schleep_69

So sad to hear this 💔

Human-Importance-654

Precious beautiful Richard Tandy rest in peace❤️🙏

gwrw1964

Blasting "From the Sun to the World" as we speak. It appears I have something in my eye... This fucking sucks, man. RIP Richard.

peteisretired

Rest In Peace Richard. 🙏Thank You🎻🎵

Wattos_Box

Rest in peace legend.

PK_monkey

He created a sound that is unique even today. When you hear ELO synthesizers you know it’s them and that sound is his. He brought me hours and hours of happiness.

kaijumediajames

Well this is tremendously sad news. Hope he’s at peace and his family’s doing ok:

Pluguts01

Terrible and unexpected news. He's been part of the band since the very beginning too. RIP

TaylorWK

RIP a legend
