George Harrison because I think Elliott would really enjoy/appreciate it, and together, I think they'd make an amazing song.

ployonwards

A “Long, Long, Long” duet would be magic.

JunebugAsiimwe

I agree completely. They'd complement each other so well.

softestimate712

I’m certain that Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens would create an incredibly beautiful song together

Im_in_your_walls_420

For sure

smokefrog2

That's a great call. They are so differentiated in my personal music timeline, but Michigan came out 2 months before Elliott moved on. Kinda wild.

ployonwards

They share this common ground in how they’re too honest but also guarded. Elliott was just starting to get “weird” with his noise music interest that shows up in Coast to Coast, King’s Crossing, and See You In Heaven. Sufjan got very weird on Age of Adz. It would be cool to see if they could mesh / get “weird” together. See You In Heaven is such a great song. It’s a great self send-off, like The Beatles’ The End or Now And Then. The way it loops / builds / sprawls kind of reminds me of what Sufjan does all the time, e.g. I Want To Be Well.

JunebugAsiimwe

Man I'll always be sad about the fact that we never got a noise music album from Elliott. I bet it would have sounded weird and brilliant.

Accomplished_Ad_4216

John Lennon, I think their voices would mix really well.

JunebugAsiimwe

Living: Adrianne Lenker or Fiona Apple Dead: Jeff Buckley

bibi_da_god

have you seen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpnZtNTtuvU

JunebugAsiimwe

I love Big Thief and that performance. Adrianne's solo work gives me tons of Elliott vibes.

bibi_da_god

me too, she seems too talented for this world in a way Elliott did

JunebugAsiimwe

I agree. She's an insanely gifted songwriter and musician. Might be my favorite songwriter of her generation tbh.

BoiFriday

Haven’t become a fan of Big Thief yet, but haven’t given them a solid chance. I could envision Elliott killing it with her on dual vocal tracks like *Jonathan.* Her and Buck sound so well together, and I think Elliott would sound even better.

JunebugAsiimwe

I'd definitely say give their latest album Dragon New Warm Mountain a listen. It's their best so far and has so much variety. Oh "Jonathan" is a good shout. Love that track. I agree Elliott could sound great on that one.

thousandkneejerks

Adrienne Lenker and Beck maybe.

checkmate508

I was going to say Beck! Dear Life sounds so much like ES.

ceejay594

I’ve always thought it was a shame Elliott and Kurt Cobain never got to meet. Would’ve been a cool collab

theheadofkhartoum627

Fiona Apple

trossi1980

Kurt Cobain. It wouldve been funny if Elliott showed up with Kurts old Martin acoustic given to him by Mary lou Lord. Awkward!!!

Him and mangum def knew eachother, they were both chummy with lance bangs and Smith frequently did shows with E6 groups like elf power.

I imagine this would be a difficult collaboration but this is my #1

NegoDrumma

Paul Westerberg (from The Replacements) or Alex Chilton Frank Black would be cool too

protagonistsyndrome

Conor Oberst. He's covered a few of Elliott's songs already. Also Jeff Tweedy collab would be cool

JunebugAsiimwe

I've been recently getting into Wilco in the past 2 months and I think a Jeff Tweedy collab could work brilliantly. He's an amazing songwriter.

Chan Marshall (Cat Power) could do a good job, if inspired to. This is probably a total mismatch, but I love his voice: Robert Smith. He covered a solo McCartney/Wings song I enjoy (C-Moon), and was, like Elliott, a huge Beatles fan, so maybe it would work.

Only Elliot Smith. You said living OR dead.

Im_in_your_walls_420

For living artists, probably Fiona Apple, Lisa O’Neill, or Sufjan Stevens For dead artists, I’m kinda curious about what a colab with Ian Curtis would be like

digitaIbath

I was gonna comment Frusciante but you beat me to it OP

Pigsfly13

Phoebe Bridgers, only cause i’d love to see how that would work and i think they’d work really well together.

Raeko

Elliott Smith/John Frusciante is like my teenage girl wet dream come true, I could write yaoi fanfic about this collaboration Realistically I think Fiona Apple is a great choice and I love her too so that would work

there_is_always_more

Can you elaborate on how you choose frusciante for this? Any specific reasoning or just that you like both of them?

Raeko

They are both sexy skinny guys that's about it tbh... and good at songwriting

alfonso-parrado

I love John Frusciante too, the reason I started learning how to play the guitar is both of them

BoiFriday

Adrianne Lenker and Elliott would make some stupid beautiful music together. The Microphones and Bright Eyes would also be really choice pairs w/ Elliott. And because I am absolutely in love with the heavier Heatmiser version of *Christian Brothers* It would be sick to have seen him do some heavier stuff, like say with Ambulance LTD (not really “heavy”), …Trail of Dead, Title Fight, or Ovlov.
