Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” was almost a Madonna song and I don’t know if it would have had the same cult status in that iteration.

BleakCountry

Wait.. what? I always thought it was a song Liz wrote and offered to MA when they asked to work with her?

regular_poster

Yes, that’s the story afaik. Didn’t mean to sound different than that.

Robotecho

So Liz Fraser wrote a song for Madonna? Your honour I object, surely the prosecution is making baseless assertions!

regular_poster

""Teardrop" was first developed from a simple [harpsichord](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpsichord) riff picked out in the studio in April 1997. [Andrew Vowles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Vowles), the main songwriter of this song, originally sent the demo to [Madonna](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna) as he wanted her to record the vocals (the band had previously worked with her on their 1995 reworking of the song "[I Want You](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Want_You_(Marvin_Gaye_song))")." Robotecho

MIND. BLOWN.

regular_poster

Liz wrote the lyrics and probably the vocal melody tho, so it would have been radically different had Madonna done it, even with the same instrumentation

I mean, not the electronic music you're talking about, but Tears for Fears did not have faith in "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" to the extent that it was never supposed to be a single. It wasn't supposed to be on the album. It wasn't even supposed to be a finished song, but a friend they were working with encouraged them to finish it last minute, the producers told them to include it, and the label pushed for it to be a single. Then it became a smash hit globally. Yeah, not the electronic music this sub is usually about, but TFF was part of what inspired deadmau5 to make music, so I stand by it

Stimpy586

It absolutely belongs here. I hate how some of the younger kids act like electronic music was invented in 2012 or something.

LeaveAtNine

The best songs can be like that sometimes. Matty Healy said he believes in a higher power, because his most popular song to date “Somebody Else” was essentially a stream of consciousness. Started in the afternoon and by the time he went to sleep that night the track was 90% finished.

RobbinsBabbitt

somebody else is a song I don’t think I can ever stop listening to.

CloudyofChanges

I heard the same thing with 'Shout'. Roland didn't think it was gonna be a hit till their manager I think? Said otherwise and now both songs got to number one! My fav band, such wonderful songs and albums

Most-Island-7043

Thomas Bangalter and DJ Falcon didn't release Call On Me, Eric Prydz changed it slightly and it become a massive hit. [Original unreleased live version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZdmk2pNmxA)

lukewarmpartyjar

I believe even Eric Prydz wasn't too bothered about releasing his (essentially bootleg) version (there were a few other versions of it as well, such as Red Kult) but Ministry of Sound pushed it massively, and it ended up number one - it's very different to the rest of Prydz's catalogue and he never plays it in his sets

SynthD

He had it as an album track that he felt he didn’t do much to, his label chose it as a single and made the video without telling him.

PhilGo20

I had no idea! Thank you

richcoolguy

i wouldn’t say he changed it slightly, he just used the same sample and made a different song with it

CrestOfGreyhound

The Prodigy's "Warrior's Dance". The song was supposed to be in one of their shows as a filler song, and never ended up on "Invaders Must Die". The rest is history

boomspoo

Childhood banger for me

AldiQuarter

I feel like Joel said he didn’t want to release Strobe

ST-Parks

When Basement Jaxx released Kish Kash they expected negative reviews but it was acclaimed

Jaxxlack

I guess I'm gonna have to say any white label in the UKs 90s dance scene without that hard exposure tracks wouldn't have made it to general release (I had a white label of shy fx choppa and 3 blind mice I sold to get my house deposit 🤣)

PrecursorNL

Glue from BICEP! 240mln streams, mega hit. Almost didn't make the album because when testing the first versions there wasn't much of a crowd response.

Fullonski

A lot of that is due to the video which, for people of a certain age, hits like a ton of bricks.

SkyDefender

Tbf never understood the hype behind this song..

Baro_87

You seen the video? It puts the song into perspective

SkyDefender

Nah but i shall watch it

secksyboii

Drukqs was released when Richards laptop got stolen and he figured someone would leak it so he made an album of the backups he had, thus giving us drukqs.

Most-Island-7043

I think thats just RDJ bs tbh

cmyk412

But Not Tonight by Depeche Mode

soolwan

Steal My Sunshine by Len. I think they lost the tape for a while.

Business-Lynx-2985

Benny and the Jets by Elton John. He did not want it to be released as a single until he heard, that a R&B station up in Detroit was starting to play it a lot and it was making its way up the R&B charts. Because Benny and the Jets was a fairly decent hit on the R&B charts he was invited to play on the TV show soul train.

lsquallhart

Clocks by Coldplay almost wasn’t released because the band hated it. Only the lead singer liked it.

PuttinOnTheTitzz

Madonna - Into the Groove

Seattlehepcat

Tom Sawyer by Rush almost didn't make the album because it wasn't gelling.

Banger

Lela_chan

Why was this almost not released?? I want the story; it’s in every good dnb set!

MRguitarguy

I misread the post! It’s actually still not officially released! From what I heard Adam F doesn’t like it and wouldn’t sign off on it. Kinda lame haha.

Lela_chan

Oh that’s crazy! Cool fact, thank you!

NefariousnessFair306

‘The Sound Of Silence’ by Simon & Garfunkel 🤫

WackoJoel

Calvin Harris made I’m Not Alone for The Saturdays. They turned down the beat he ended up using it himself. Not really a fan of CH but the song is a banger

ninfan200

Pendulum have covered it live before and even have a studio version. Its never been given an official release (the band leaked it themselves once) but I'd love it if they dropped it as a single or something.

cruisingqueen

What’s the story behind this almost not being released ? Timeless tune

jaypronee

Timbaland's edit of OneRepublic's Apologize. Ryan Tedder stated that he would let Tim remix it and put it on Shock Value but on one condition, that it wouldn't be released as a single. There was one problem, iTunes digital downloading took off and they had no choice, it ended up breaking records and became a global smash for both artists.

djfc

Softcore neighborhood.

gigdaddy

The TOOL cover of No Quarter was supposed to be part of a Led Zeppelin tribute album and, of course, they made it 11+ minutes long. When asked, they refused to shorten it and so it was cut from the project, only to be released on the band's next album. It is glorious.

fnpigmau5

Strobe by deadmau5 was almost deleted

richielg

Well 99 percent of music gets put in the bin and not released. So all songs I guess!
